  • This rare Jaguar XJR-S has been sitting for 18 years. It seems to have been parked since it lost spark. A new sensor has now been tracked down. Will this forgotten Jaguar run again with a new sensor?

    I know you've got older style XJS, but I love the look of the facelifted XJS, I hope you get this car going again.

      I’m not a huge facelift fan actually. I much prefer the older ones. However this is a special beast

      @@LivingWithAClassic It is, and it needs to be on the road. I can't remember the last time I saw an XJS on the road in the UK. That TWR is pretty much a Supercar, I know you'll do it right Adam.

    Great video! My XJ40 is now back on the road with a replacement transmission control module from the junkyard.

    I have a pre-facelift version of this car and the thought of faults on the Zytek system gives me nightmares. The good news for me and also your friend is that in the 13 years I've owned the car it has been absolutely reliable, suggesting it is a very dependable system, but I would hate to have to deal with ignition/management faults on I this far down the line from when they were made. Glad you found the part you needed, good to know there are still components out there!

    Dont crank it too much you will grind the rings and cylinder walls into metal particles, lose compression and destroy the motor! These V12s are susceptible to that after long storage! The oil pump cannot build pressure enough to get oil on the cylinder walls. Squirt oil on the cylinder walls (all round) before cranking anymore. Get the fuel system running and primed and forget about the starter fluid for now.

    Just for your information that connector to the distributor is a very common Delphi "Weatherpack" connector. Commonly found on GM cars. You can very easily obtain the pins/connector bodies/seals for these connectors online. You will need to buy the proper tool to crimp the wires however.
    Note the first crimp will be on the wire itself and the second is made on the insulation AND the individual wire seal (normally a green grommet). With the connector body released, these pins can be crimped and then slid into the back of the connector body.
    Hope this helps! Watching from Australia, always love to see your content!

      @@LivingWithAClassic You're most welcome! I find them cheaper than deutsch connectors and can take some decent amperage and wire size that is ideal to replace old broken connectors.

    Adam you are in possesion of my most wanted Jaguar! i would love find one over here. I recently interviewed a guy on my channel at the Jaguar Drivers Club of AU annual display day with a beautiful example. That XJR-S will come up a treat!. Love those speedline wheels! Looking forward to hearing it start, all the best Brett from AU

    You're definately making progress. Keep at it... she'll start soon enough. Can't wait to see it when it finally fires up. My gut feel is that it was only the sensor that caused it to be off of the road (this is what caused my XJR-S to be off the road for 11 months). Once that sensor fails, it's pretty much game over unless you get a new one - which you now have. The previous owner must have realised this and thats why it was left. Just hoping that the replacement sensor you have is good. Maybe you could test it - hand turn the wheel in the sensor and see if you get an electrical signal from it. Good luck.

    I see your wearing your knit hat to keep warm. My wife and I took a little ride today (around 200 miles) here in Texas with the top down in our 1995 XJS convertible with a 4.0. Just trying to make you jealous! Of course, we have to worry about our air conditioning working right most of the time, but today it was perfect weather for top-down driving.
    I once had an old Triumph motorcycle that needed a new ignition system, some guy in Dallas was smart enough to make ignition systems that actually worked. I wonder if there is someone out there that can copy/make the replacement ignition part for your XJS. It might be really simple to do for someone who knows what they are doing with electronics. Just a thought you might consider. One other thing, I sure wish I had your patience!

    It does have a bit of gallop cranking hiting to some cylinders being down on compression like others have mentioned and with the way these enegine crank slowly I don't think starter fluid will get it to fire maybe worth fogging the cylinder before the next attempt. But I'm sure with your skill you'll get her back up and running in no time keep up the good work Adam!

    I remember when they raced the XJS in Australian touring car races. Tom Walkinshaw.
    It was always fun to see them race against the Volvo 240Turbo and the BMW 635CSi. The XJS was heavy but also very powerful so they often had tire troubles as the race progressed. (Bathurst1000 race)
    Maybe check the ignition sequence? And if maybe the distributer is 180 degr. off?
    If it gets fuel and spark it should run. But only if both fuel and spark are delivered at the right moment.
    Oh well, you will figure it out.

    Adam, I have started or fired up many cars on starting (ether) fluid. I always pull the plugs and dump a lot in each cylinder. I get it, it’s a pain in the arse, but it’s the only way. XJS starters don’t turn over with high speed, it’s a miracle any start. I appreciate all the video’s. Oh yea, vacuum that engine compartment and use fender(wing) protectors, your on TV. Lol

    • @LivingWithAClassic
      @LivingWithAClassic  Рік тому

      The wings (fenders) are covered in moss. I’ll use covers once they have been clean off.
      Next step will be a fuel pump I think and get it to fire up for real

      I didn’t hear any funny-business while turning over the engine. Do you change the oil first, before starting? Who knows how old it is or if gas got into it from a leaky fuel injector, pull the dip stick and check/smell it.

    Hi Adam, well you got the stay with it ness. Now tell me this, I have an XJS V12, 1988 model, and we have had heavy rain from the hurricane Fiona that hit Nova Scotia and the wind and rain was severe, I found that the cabin of the car on the right side of the passenger cabin got wet, the floor area only. It appears as if it came along the bottom of the dash area. So, I don't think the front window leaked, but a friend who has a similar Jag side there is a drain from the ventilation area that takes water thru, I am wondering if that might be clogged and the overflow comes into the cabin? Thoughts ? Actually, I have since learned that it may be the front window, I have a friend who has a similar model and he has a problem with water getting in, is this common with the XJS models?

      They all crank that slowly I’m afraid. It’s a lot of engine to turn over

    • @workshop_deluxe2493
      @workshop_deluxe2493 Рік тому +1

      Yep, as Adam stated, it is a big engine to be started, they all crank that slow. Though, while cranking, it sounds like the compression is lower on one, two of the cylinders. It is not continously cranking. Just my feeling.

    • @LivingWithAClassic
      @LivingWithAClassic  Рік тому

      Yes it does sound like compression is down on a few. Makes sense when it’s been sitting so long

      @@LivingWithAClassic It amazes me how they gradually wake from their slumbers with a bit of use. Mine was in storage for a number of years and it ran like a pig when it came back out. Gentle driving with a delicate touch got it back to a smoother state of running and feeling it settle down as the miles passed was great. Once it had got a hundred miles or so under the wheels I started to open the taps some more, and it just got sweeter and sweeter. They love to be driven, and hate sitting around. Hopefully this one will be the same. It's a big lump of an engine, it is bound to be a little grouchy when you first wake it up!
