One of the reasons I gave up on LASO. Even the beat under 3 hours one can be frustrating "THIS NEVER HAPPENED IN THE SIMULATIONS AHHHH"
@@silentphotographer117 i kept trying getting the skip at the end of the room to work too and my fov was wayy higher so his depiction didnt work the same way, for whatever reason if you fail it it gives you a checkpoint with 2 seconds to adjust and get it right.. i swear the game is so inefficiently coded that it helps you break it..

The prison skip took me two hours worth of attempts to even get the brute to fall with me. When he eventually fell in I got it on my first try, though.

ATTENTION COOP LASO FAM!!! The despawns in the first room, the prison skip, and the mausoleum skip, all work in coop. BUT DOES ONE OR BOTH OF US NEED TO DO THEM!? First Despawns - 1 player, Prison Skip - 1 player, Mausoleum Skip - both players.

FOr the prison skip, do both people have to go down the lift or can one wait at the top?
MattheManiac2 only one needs to do it, the other player will teleport once you hit the loading zone in the lift
One waits and will get warped down then up.
I don't understand what's happening in the prison elevator, when I do it I seem to float there and then the brute just dies from the melee damage and I continue downwards

Ok why the FUCK are the h2 loading screens so absurdly long on mcc pc? Every other game loads within seconds and h2 takes at minimum like 2 minutes on all levels

After hours of trying for the prison skip, I finally got it. The Halo 2 LASO dream is still alive thanks to your videos, Silver. Still helping us Halo fans in 2024!
First room, middle door segment. To progress easily plus get a double overshield: Someone mentioned this already but it's soo helpful I'll repeat it to double your chances of coming across it. When doing the middle door skip, you can easily lure the brutes to the closed door (it won't open for them) by standing on the left of the corridor. Be near where it would open if you went further forward (op said to crouch repeatedly but this wasn't necessary for me, just be on the left). You will see their guns poke through. Now, touch the right side wall so they turn around and leave - just quickly walk out and back smack one, retreat, repeat. Then with 2/3 brutes dead resume the guide as normal for the carbines. Could possibly continue the door use but didn't try - don't want to meet the beserker in the corridor.

This worked perfectly and makes the first room super easy once you get past the initial spawn. One thing to note as well is that if you fail the despawn next to the TV after taking out the carbine brutes you can go into that same doorway and take out the brutes with the same method (one time I managed to despawn the remaining waves inside the doorway). The first time in the door you can also back smack and needler those first two grunts then do what you said with all 3 brutes which makes jumping up top a little easier with only two remaining grunts.
Yeah the skip doesn't really work, but this far better. To add onto your point:-
You can afk against the left hand side and it WILL eventually force the enemy to the door. Even the ones with Carbines on the High-Ground. Literally kill every enemy in this room from this door. EVERY. ONE. When the Brutes Enrage, they're a little tricky to backstab, because there's a little lip on the door entrance, so you wanna jump just as it opens to guarantee the connection. Same with Grunts really, who also walk near the door a lot. Its just about getting the timing right between them turning around, the door opening, and the jump backsmack. But with some practice, this is definitely the best way to do this entire room imo.
@wasdwasd609 I can confirm the skip works, once you do it you get a checkpoint and after that you can start doing what you said right here. Definitely a safer strat and you get over shield 100%. The easiest way to kill the Rage Brutes is to stick them with nades once you make them go to the door. Except for that, this strat saved my sanity for this whole room, thank you!

I'm watching a LASO guide for my legendary playthrough, your strategies help out a lot, but I had some trouble getting past the first room, never got the spots I needed right, but you sure helped me for the rest, good job on what you do, hopefully one day you reach 1 Million.
Yeah the skulls affect AI behaviors/movement so there's a good chance they'd behave different on regular Legendary. Most of the tricks work out though.
I struggled the most with that bloody prison skip haha but i finally got past it, not much further to go and this is the last laso campaign i need so almost there! These guides are amazing thank you.
Amazing guide as always silver, I started my attempt for H2 LASO last weekend and some way somehow i made it through Cairo station. Today I finally completed gravemind (SOLO). These guides are heaven-sent. I started with Halo CE LASO about two years ago and finished that and all the rest (all SOLO), but always dreaded H2. CE LASO was actually pretty fun in my opinion while it is also my favorite Halo game. Made me actually try for the rest. Beating Cairo gave me the confidence to continue and perhaps finish my run. With GraveMind finished, the end is in sight.

I did end up getting the skip to work. Like 6 enemies would jump in with me and when that happens you have to do the button combo much faster to keep the momentum
@@AshweeMeakins I tried seeing if capping my frames to 60 made it work better and when I reset the checkpoint it restarted the entire mission... I was sad lol. Fuuuuck this level.
Your recent guides for this and regret make H2 laso so much easier, i dare say its no longer the hardest on the mcc. Gravemind was toughest misson for me at least of all the lasos and legendary speedruns
is it possible or has anyone completed LASO by playing the game the normal way? without using special tactics like in this video
@@Blox117 Yeah, my best time right now is about 70 minutes for this mission not skipping the prison or any other despawns. Running past a couple parts, but no actual despawns. I'm gonna try it with these strats soon and see how low I can get the time. I feel like 35 minutes is for sure possible based on what I'm seeing in this. The second room can be improved by at least 2 minutes and if you take a more aggressive approach by actually fighting in the final room could save 7-10 minutes instead of the safe waiting method. Clearly Mr. Completionist could have gone several minutes faster if he wasn't doing certain actions for the purposes of teaching and he still finished around 45 min. MAYBE less than 30 min is possible. Idk. We'll see. As far as the whole game... idk. Having done it without any skips I can tell you for sure Regret was the hardest for me. After that I'd think either Outskirts or QZ would probably be the hardest if you did the whole level without any skips whatsoever. But with those two I drove past most sections in my runs so idk. QZ is the easiest LASO mission for H2 if you don't play it traditionally.
Blox117 nothing is impossible, just need to find a strategy that works. Its just human nature to take shortcuts. Most of the older tricks were known before the mcc
@@GamblingDolphin Yeah I can pretty consistently get to the start of the mausoleum skip after a little over a half hour with the strats in this video, so I end up actually finishing at around 45 minutes. It can definitely be done faster if you're more aggressive.
@@HaloCompletionist Dude, I'm trying to practice the prison skip without iron on (so I can keep reverting) and I haven't managed to do it once yet in like 35 minutes. I can get underneath the brute maybe 1/8 of the time which is acceptable to me right now since it's like 10 seconds or less each try. But every time I try to do the button combo to go back up, I always end up assassinating/beating down the brute. I tried it with both the same button setting you used in the video and with recon which is what I normally use. Idk what I'm doing wrong.
Dunno if it's been said before, but after you kill the hallway grunts in the first despawn/skip, you can back into the hallway for safety. From there, you can actually game the AI.
If you hug the left wall and stand just behind where the door would open, the brutes at least will come and just keep walking at the door. Once they're up against it, you can shift to the right wall, and they turn around to walk back to that one spot behind the ramp. If you time it right, you can back smack the closest brute and back into the hallway again before they turn around to attack.
I just beat it and realized that the butterfly prison skip is 1000% easier with a controller rather than my mouse and keyboard. One thing he doesn't mention is that you wanna make sure you have as many grenades as possible before you get to the 2nd/3rd checkpoints in the first room, just in case you miss cruicial grenades sticks. Regardless, I couldn't have done it without you silver! You are an absolute legend! Your guides have made me enjoy the game way more!
Just a hot tip for when you're doing co-op. The beginning skips can be done in Coop if you have one person stand where Silver does the first skip, and the other person stand where Silver stands at 7:00

thank you sooo much silver. been doing your guides since the reach laso. I found reach easy enough to do without your help but your tricks were a lifesaver on the pillar of autumn and long night of solace. Just finished gravemind and i have you to thank. I hope you realize how much we appreciate your guides, i really do.
I was just doing this on legendary with only the sputnik skull on, and in the final room the fuel rod elite was already locked onto me when I entered the room after the 10 minute wait. I tried about 10 times to run past everyone but I kept dying to him within 2 seconds.
I ended up blocking the doorway with crates and I had to take out every enemy in there with the noob combo and fuel rod. It eventually worked, but it took a while. Great guide even in 2024.

If helpeful for anyone stuck, like me, at the lift section:
- I play unversal bumper jumper (LB for jump, RB for melee, Y Switch weapon, B reload)
- The way I found it easier to button mash (for me) was to press RB Melee, Y (switch weapon) and LB Jump all at the same time (no pause between JUMP&MELEE and Reload as Silver did).
- to get used to it, I went into Metropolis and right at the start there are 2 marines on which I tested the RB&Y button mash (melee/cancel) . From there, I focused on pressing LB & RB at the same time, while with my thumb I pressed Y.
- all to do then was to be lucky enough to jump in the elevator with the Brute not below me, or not too high above me that I couldn't reach, and follow Silver's instructions (start the botton mash once you hear Cortana talk). You'd only need to botton mash for 5 seconds or so. :)
Anyway, once I got it, I was really happy. :D Maybe this helps someone.

Found a new strat for the very first encounter for those interested. You need to back up, jump and immediately start strafing whilst constantly shooting the brute on the left. This throws off their shots and 9/10 (at least for me) you’ll survive. I’ve found it to be a very consistent strat. The Brute on the left will sometimes strafe as well, and if he makes it to the otherside with his buddy, just save and quit. Once they get there they go from defensive to offensive, and they'll just circle around any cover you take. As hard as it is to believe, they're at their most vulnerable and easiest to take out during the start when they're shooting you. I've heard some people suggest the TV as cover but I would discourage that because you need to be taking out the Brute on the left straight away or otherwise that TV will just be a death trap when they inevitably push up.
EDIT: In regards to the prison skip, I kept trying for an hour and could never get a consistent result with this method. One of three things would happen: the above door would either be closed causing the brute to fall back down, slide off my head and land on the ground as I jumped in; the Brute would decide he wants to kill me (if he throws a second grenade, then he's decided to engage you instead); or, in an extremely unlucky circumstance, I miss the headshot on the Jackal, and while I'm waiting for the Brutes to show up, the Jackal melts me from behind. Far too much RNG involved.
However, I've found the old method is actually more reliable and kinda still works on LASO. Basically, do the same thing Silver suggests here by waiting for them, and as soon as they show up, go down, then head right and hide behind a corner, then go back in. The Brute will not go up the lift if you're lucky, and instead get stuck in an animation of moving back and forth (because he's stuck in the animation of trying to enter the lift to go up but can't because Cortana's reversed it). If you don't get this state or he does something else, save and quit and try again. If he does, move up to him quickly, get between him and the lift, and he will eventually try to melee you. Either as he's doing this or before he does, step back into the lift, and with a little luck, his momentum will carry him into the lift with you. While there's still some RNG involved, it's far less, and I got it first try on my second reset using this method.
Nothing against Silver, man's a legend and his guides are unmatched, this is just for people struggling with the skip like I was. And remember, whilst practicing the skip on lower difficulties, keep in mind that the skulls do change certain AI behaviors. I actually found the skip harder to do on vanilla Easy difficulty because without catch, they wouldn't stop to throw a grenade and would just head through the lift. It can also be harder on LASO due to Sputnik, because the Brutes' melee will often hit you so hard it'll send you flying over the lift, rather than into it, so you have to be more stringent with your timing. The Brute aggro method is the old method and I personally think, while more risky, it's more reliable. Unfortunately, the enemies on the level below you as you're going down the lift are pure RNG and there's nothing you can really do to pre-empt them, so you just have to hope they don't shoot you or, if they do, they don't land that many hits. You can get any shields you lost back on the way up by killing the brute above you like Silver said, and from one of the marines.
Dude, you are a saint. I followed your old guide when I was getting "Back for More", and that was a nightmare. This time I'm going through the Legendary Master Chief Saga playlist and this guide saved me so much more heart break of having to restart a run because of the prisons.
Here's a tip that I can actually give you though. When a brute is berserking, get into a clean open area. You want to get him to charge at you and right before he gets to you he makes a large pounce to hit you. If you side step to the left as he does he will usually miss you and land behind you. You have a quick window after he pounces to back smak him. You want to be in an open area where he can pounce uninterrupted and where you have enough room to get behind and whack him.
+1 free shield charge off one of the more difficult enemies in the game.

I just wanna say my thanks for providing these guides Silver! If you hadn't made these, I probably would not have been able to do the H2 LASO playlist. Every mission up to Gravemind actually wasn't too bad but Gravemind really tested me and especially the prison skip. I managed to get it after probably a week on and off of trying to get it. My advice to any struggling with the prison skip or specifically, you've got a brute in the elevator above you but you keep assassinating him, hit those button combos quicker. I had to mash the jump+melee / reload combo probably at double the speed (if not even faster) than what Silver demonstrated in the video, even with only one brute above me. I found doing that, I was able to hit melee cancel pretty easy. I only found this out by doing some testing on easy with the LASO skulls enabled (minus iron for checkpoint revert). I was trying with controller and started pressing it quicker and it seemed like it was starting to work so I set a custom keybind on my num-pad on my keyboard so I could just MASH those keys and it worked first try when I went through in LASO.
I can't really offer any advice for the RNG in that room for things like the Jackals and the Brutes and even getting one into the lift in the correct position because maybe it was just my lack of luck, but it seemed to change just about every time I'd save and quit to retry. I would suggest though, sticking as close as you can to Silver's guide, especially after the first room and I would also suggest practicing the prison skip on easy with the LASO skulls enabled (again, minus iron) because then you might be able to get the timing down for the melee cancel.
Good luck to anyone still attempting this or going to attempt this and thanks again Silver for providing these fairly in-depth guides to tackle this challenge!

Some tips for the prison skip. Me and my coop partner practiced in a custom game on coagulation. Just have to be on enemy teams. You can practice on flat ground. Just beat down and cancel the beat down by reloading. The timing is the same, just have to add the jump button to it. Also I play on Bumper jumper. So i press RB and LB together at the same time, then B for reload. Makes it so much easier with this configuration. Also, you have to use the carbine with atleast one bullet missing from the chamber. My coop partner didn't realize this, and was practicing with different weapons or a full clip. A plasma weapon can't reload so it wouldn't work.
Didnt even think about potential problems with the non reloading weapons. I've always had the carbine out.
I've done it with a beam rifle in my hands before... so I'm not sure this is entirely accurate. The button layout is definitely easier in bumper jumper, but you dont need to have to reload. Just spamming the reload button and the melee button at the same time will always cancel the melee animation. So for default controls, ABX is what you do, for bumper jumper, its RB LB B, but just always make sure to press the melee and reload button at the same time, but the weapon in hand does not matter, and you dont need a reloadable weapon
Have to hit the buttons at the same time regardless of weapon. Halo 3 you need a least one round fired to do it
Man the cancel is no where near hard enough to require practice. All you'd really need to do is stand there and hit the combination if you wanted to practice. Literally all it takes. So long as you're hitting the jump and melee at the right times, you should only worry about if you're canceling all your hits. ABX was plenty easy. The only hard part was the brute timing, and it really depends on how things are when you first walk in. For example, where silver was standing often got me killed or weak regardless of whether i killed the jackal or not.

Spent 6 hours to get to the prison lift, failed to butterfly, got a checkpoint inside the lift going down. I want to throw everything out of the window.

@@mattfortney4734 Halo 2 has a machanic that invalidates your last checkpoint if you die in short enough time and it will set you to the checkpoint before the invalidated one.
@@marcbelsch3887 What ever that means? The entire LASO is luck based, after 4 days of trying the prison skip I finally got it. Found out you can’t fight the prison.
@@mattfortney4734 You can do the prison, solo or co-op. There is, however, a chance (based on game RNG seed) that you may be insta-killed before being able to move once you hit the bottom of the lift, if that happens, either kill yourself 5 times within five seconds of reloading to last checkpoint or (if solo) restart the mission.
You obviously can't reset your checkpoint on LASO solo

Just got this done after 7-9ish hours of nonstop nightmarish hell I like the call the “Gravegrind”, and man the end section of just waiting there for that door to open with breaking Benjamin playing in the background was some feeling I tell yuu, But I am moving on and never looking back at this nightmare lol!
For anybody having trouble butterflying to skip the jail you could use whatever button it is to switch weapons instead of the reload button which I find easier.
So funny thing happened to me that made the Prison Glitch extremely difficult.....a jackal decided to join the Brute and I. So the button mashing ended up taking longer (I had to pause and rest twice) due to the extra "weight". It still worked but it felt like a button mashing mini game in Mario Party. (I had a checkpoint in the elevator so I couldn't redo it without restarting the level again)
Excellent walkthrough. One of the best you’ve done. Great communication throughout and showing multiple scenario variants.
BTW, while doing the prison skip, make sure you save and quit before you hit the load zone if the brute doesn't follow, the brute is too far etc. If you save and quit after you hit the loadzone, the checkpoint you hit earlier isn't loaded, so when you resume the game, you will have to restart the whole level. This has happened to me 3 times so far
HUGE TIP:
If you ever restart the level instead of pressing "Save & Quit" you can close the MCC in task manager and you will get your last checkpoint back.
This saved me big time as I accidentally restartet the level at the prison skip -_-
as a tip for everyone trying to get past the part in the first room after the 3 light skip before the carbine brutes spawn: melee and kill the first two grunts like in the video then fall back into the hall so the door closes. then, melee the wall just before the door would open(around the line on the wall closest to the door) after a few seconds one or more brutes will start smashing their faces in the door trying to get to you. you can then walk up to the door and open it to melee them to death. if you are lucky you can get all 3 and(assuming you didnt kill any additional grunts) stroll up to the balconies where the carbine brutes spawn for ez kills. I found this much easier than what was in the vid.

These guides are a godsend. It took me several hours to get the prison skip, and I kept flubbing the button combo. I wound up temporarily binding melee to C (I’m on PC and use space to jump) and once I had a brute go down right, the combo worked first try with that new mapping.
Finally done this mission after 3 lag outs (after the prison glitch - I know, painful). Thank you, this wasn't possible without your guides. Just 3 relatively easy missions left, then I've done all Halo MCC games on LASO :)

@Halo Completionist I just discovered a trick that maybe could help to someone who read this comment. For those that have problem with the first room you have to follow the Silver's guide until you have to kill the brutes. Once you be in the tunnel and stuck some grunts (I recommend that you leave one alive) you don't need to get out and stay behind the pilar; get closer to the door but don't open it, stay a few seconds to and eventually all the brutes will stay behind the door like they will chasing you. Don't worry the door is close and then you can walk away from the door and the brutes will too, quickly come closer to the door and stuck many as you can, I recommend one, they'll don't realize of you and you can easily kill them, I guess they will scripted for stay in the place that describes Silver. You need one brute berserking and one grunt for take out the carbine brutes nd pass this room. I hope this was useful and I can, for now, get the recognition for this tip.

HOLY SHIT THANK YOU, to add to this if it might help someone in the future; you can stick brutes through the wall if they carry a Plasma Rifle, aim above their hand and let the plasma nade drop onto their hand and they will berserk and die :)

As brutal as Gravemind is, it's my favorite level in Halo 2. The 3-way battles and the gorgeous environments and vistas make the whole thing so immersive.

My advice if you catch yourself in a situation that silver isnt positioned in i recommend watching GB austin as well and mixing up both of their methods to beating this mission as sometimes i found myself in a situation that required another method to silvers but generally this is the best guide by far so thank you again silver.

Honestly, I think Regret was worse. I found the starting room despawns pretty easy here, and Prison Skip took me an hour or two because I was stupid and save/quit reloaded a couple times when I actually had a good setup.
I was able to beat the laso playlist for halo 2 about a month ago. Thanks for the guide bro, this mission took me about 9 hours to beat. But man did it feel great beating it.

For anyone who keeps killing the brute by accident on the lift skip. I think you need to have bullets missing in your carbine clip. I kept failing because after I killed the jackal I would reload, only worked after I didnt reload the carbine

I messed up getting the checkpoint early for elevator skip so went back for shields each time, but the enemies were moving while I was away. Restarted the mission and watched you do the elevator skip a dozen times before I tried, got it on the fifth go. Thank you!!!
I spent COUNTLESS tries just getting out of the first room. So many tries, I took two months off and returned to it. All to get a checkpoint in the prison skip while in the lift, and now it’s insta-death whenever I load the checkpoint. Guess I have to start over. Why am I doing this to myself?
That prison room is busted, broken af. I was always intimidated to do the skip, but it's totally worth it. If you restart, it'll be easy to leave the first room than it was before. It gets easier the more times you do it.
I managed to get through the prison, but I got really lucky with sticking one of the brutes at the bottom and the other would jump infront of me as I landed to shield me from the needles and to get extra shield from him
@@AndyGoesRawrTV Awesome, yeah the needlers are the worst bc they track and are often impossible to avoid. That's awesome though, from there it gets way easier. If you skip most the sections by running thru or going on the roof platforms, then the only thing left is the big final room. Which is a grind, but since they're fighting its not too bad. Especially when you're that near the finish line, at that point you know victory is near and morale remains high.
Wow... the first room is soo hard! Took me probably 6 hours over 3 different days to finally get past the first room. After that the rest of the level was a breeze thanks to your guides! I even nailed the prison skip on the 2nd try!! Thanks for all your help along this Great Journey!
Me and my buddy just did this and god damn it was AWFUL. Our first attempt ended at the Prison section, which was 1.48.33 and then we went again the same day and got it 3.22.48, thank you for your guides man, these would be impossible without you.
all i can say is thank god for the halo 2 carbine, soooo much better than the halo 3 one, gotten me out of a lot of situations i thought were certain death :)
1st attempt took 5 hours and we gave up because of the elevator skip.
2nd attempt took 2 hours and I found it easier if you let the brute hit you in the elevator. Thank you so much for these guides!

Spent pretty much 6 hours or my whole morning on this nightmare of a mission, spent mostly in the first room despawning enemies, trying to stick only two brutes on the ground floor and the two w/carbines that always seemed to spawn either one on each side or both on my side of the three doors above.
As for the prison skip, I only managed to do it flawlessly after practicing a few times on Easy w/Anger, Assassins, Ghost, Blind, Catch, Sputnik, Mythic, Bandana, That’s Just…Wrong and Thunderstorm skulls, so you get the similar experience to that point. Really recommend practicing so you don't get annoyed with save/quitting constantly, you really have to time it well so the second brute throwing a grenade enters the small lift and you immediately go to the center of bottom door when it opens so he's above you. Also it's way easier to spam with controller on default settings than KB+M. Those were pretty much the only time-consuming areas for me along with this annoying elite with the carbine around 26:15 which I only had a few shield at the time. Lol.
Definitely lived up to it's reputation of difficulty. After this ordeal, I just have to wonder why couldn't they give us the Envy skull, glad it's over now though. Never again! :D
HOT TAKE: Cairo Station is the hardest LASO level in H2 not Gravemind. And certainly not Regret (the early temple set up strat renders that fight comically easy).
Sure that initial room might be the hardest section/checkpoint in the entire campaign but you have the two despawns to make it immensely easier and checkpoints in between fights/waves right before performing them, same with prison skip the timing and combo are hard to get down but you also get a checkpoint seconds before it with a perfect set up so you can just try over and over to your heart’s content until you get it with very little downtime between tries so all in all very manageable.
In Cairo there are no real skips, you have to kill pretty much everything and checkpoints only come after clearing hard sections. Taking 25 min. or so to clear those hangers methodically just to mis a jump or not getting behind cover in time just to get mowed down by plasma in the blink of an eye and waste all that time by resetting back can be pretty disheartening. Also having to babysit and shove Johnson’s uncooperative ass all over Cairo can be a major pain as well, more time consuming, taxing and stressful since it demands longer times of constantly being focused and on your toes by keeping an eye on him and another on the swarm of enemies that plague the station. Still fun and rewarding to finish it tho.
So yeah, if you can tackle H2 LASO’s biggest hurdle right of the bat, be confident that you can finish the rest of it since you won’t face another obstacle like it again.
Finishing this playlist was so challenging and fun and honestly could not have done it without Silver’s guides so for that he forever has my utmost gratitude.
I got the best possible RNG on the beggining of this level, I left 1 berskering brute and a grunt on the first level, 2 brutes apperead on the opposite level, I needled one and the other went berserk thanks for your guide! Also, I've found it more or less reliable to just side step brute lunges to the left and insta kill them

This guide is a godsend. Took only 2 tries to do the prison skip (first time I got killed by the enemies below while dropping down with the brute cuz I had no shields) and the despawn at the end was great.
2:10 My partner was behind me when I was doing the despawn and I think it failed because the grunt didn't spawn behind me (or him). I ended up doing every wave ;-;
27:15 This room was the hardest to get by because I had no shields so I couldn't do the nade jump, instead I took the path underneath. It was extremely RNG-based 'cause sometimes the enemies spawn/see you, other times they don't.

After practicing the prison skip on Easy, I found out that the button combo is safer for the brute (prevents a back smack) if you press reload IMMEDIATELY after the jump + melee. The reload is interrupting your melee and therefore prevents the game from giving you the easy back smack. The speed you perform the button combo isn't too important, so long as it's fast enough to get you and the brute (+jackal if you're unlucky) back up the lift. I can't stress how important it is to press reload IMMEDIATELY after but NOT at the same time as the jump + melee. The 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 rhythm Silver mentions never worked for me because the melee would always slip up at some point and screw up the run. It's also possible to do with a jackal (assuming one jumped down the lift and didn't scoot by either of you) if you accidentally kill the brute.
Anyway, this cancerous level is FINALLY done after 2 weeks of wading through bullshit RNG!!!
Two tips for the 1st room, first do the trick others have mentioned wheee u hug the left wall near the door where you do the first despawn. If u hug left wall close to the door without opening you can lure the brutes one by one and backsmack them after you walk to the right wall and then out the front. Secondly I suggest only trying the first despawn because the next one I wasn’t able to get and got a checkpoint in the middle of the room as more enemies spawned in and was screwed. If u stay in the little tunnel thing with the door u do the first despawn the entire room is much easier and you will ensure safe checkpoints
For the prison skip I found silvers method to work best and I tried everything even the new strat jervalin used on the moistcritical challenge. The thing is the brute timing from run to run will vary slightly but within multiple attempts on the same run they will go into the lift roughly the same time every time (for me it was 4 seconds). So I would drop down and count 4
Seconds and hopefully walk into the bottom right as one gets lifted up and before Cortana reverses the lift
The second brute should start lifting up giving you time to walk underneath right as Cortana reverses it. Also I found that if I thought I was too far to reach with a melee it was better to just reset than to risk a bad checkpoint and having to restart. Godspeed spartan
The halo completionist and The naked eli helped me do the laso levels, without them i would have given up a long time ago
So I failed the 2nd despawn in the first room, ended up having to kill all the enemies to progress. It took a while but a good trick is to run into the corridors when the enemies come out, once inside these corridors if you crouch repeatedly it attracts the enemies to the door and you can just stick/melee them. I find this trick tends to work best in the corridor which you perform the first despawn.

THANK YOU! This was a life saver and really works for the whole first room. I would add some detail. I found that this as you say only works in first corridor when you perform the first skip. My approach was to repeatedly punch the wall right behind the line you have to pass to open the door, after a while the brutes will appear in front of the door and try to walk through it so you can see their faces. Then I would step back and wait around 1-2 second for the brutes to lose the interest (you will see them turning around). At that point I would rush forward and through the door to find the brutes walking slowly away ready to be back smacked. Rinse and repeat until only the angry brute is left. At this point go up on either side and kill the grunts from distance. This helped me get through with some ease all the waves after the first despawn trick. This even worked after missing the second despawn trick so I did not have to restart again. Hope it helps cause I did not find any good reliable strategy for the waves after the first despawn.

How exactly do you stick or melee those dudes when they're at the door? There's no cover once you open said door. If you melee and there's multiple, you'll get lit up. If you stick them, they'll light you up before they blow up. How exactly does your strategy work?

Finally completed Gravemind LASO today. Here’s how long each of the three most grueling missions took me to finish:
1. Cairo Station: 3 weeks (6/23 to 7/14, kept Johnson up to except the last room, which took multiple days to complete and multiple guides).
2. Regret: 3 days (7/24, 7/31, 8/1)
3. Gravemind: 1 week, 1 day (8/6 to today (8/14)) First room: 6 days (8/6 to 8/12), Prison Skip: about 8-9 hours (8/13 9:00 pm EDT to about 12:45 am EDT to 8/14 from 6:40 am EDT to about 1:00 pm EDT. Rest of level: 9 hours (2:00 pm EDT to about 11:10 pm EDT) - kept getting stuck in a lot of the outside sections. So glad to have finished.
LASO completions:
Halo CE: About 4 weeks (TaR was hardest level and took over a week to beat).
Halo 3: 2 weeks
Halo 4: 2 weeks
Halo 3: ODST: 1 week
Halo 2: (still working) 6/23 to present (almost 2 months).
Make sure you put the controller layout to default on the prison skip. I normally use zoom and shoot and using that makes it significantly harder. Default is a breeze.
