I was very fortunate to watch this race in '82,'83,'84,'85,'86, and the last race in '87!!! Good old days!
This is true
WOW!
That Mustang is awesome. I have a model of the #06 GTP Mustang that i built about 20 years ago.
Bill Whittington passed away recently in a plane crash. Needless to say he lived everyday to the fullest. RIP Bill
He was many things. Rascal, Provocateur, Cheater, Criminal and he made racing exciting.
R.I.P. Riverside
Driving on the 60fwy aside the old track I always think of great racing
Randy Lanier sure did pay a high price for his fast life, and I'm glad he's out of prison. Even though IMSA in the 1980's stood for International Marijuana Smuggler's Association, it was still a very exciting time and venue for motor racing.
Takes me back.. OK, YES! I'M OLD.
no pit speed
gas here and there
Kudos to the Holberts
I hardly remember these days
THanks for the memories
We sure miss RIR...great track and great racing times. anonymousgramom
I'm a Chevy guy but that Mustang Prototype car looks like a beast.
thanks for uploading this, gets me back to those days and it feels good
thanks Mr bones you rock.your channel is a dream come true.
I was there 🎉
There was a project to build a new Riverside, but it went bankrupt.
This track is AWESOME.
You can see the beginning of the demise of the track when they show camera views looking to the north at the start of the back straight @ 9:32...there are brand news homes under construction less than a quarter mile away from the track. It wasn't long after that before the entire area was filled with housing developments.
I really wish I was able to see these races in person
You can even see a big change from this race to the last race in 1987 (the Cup race).
I Wish Diamond P did more IMSA coverage.
why hasn't someone made a game about these cars and tracks yet?
+Dylan Hale (Snipeme77) look into iRacing. Also there are several mods created for older PC racing games to add tracks and cars.
Seriously they need to. BTW. Bruce Jenner raced back then, Wow.
+Camm GTR there were two race drivers named Bruce Jenner back then. One from the US and the other from New Zealand. The New Zealander was the one in this race. The US one raced in GT.
NASCAR Racing 3 and 2003 Season have a GTP mod, as does INDYCAR RACING II for PC.
GTR2 has IMSA GTP mods
0:50:47 I love Derek Bell ❤️
Amazing how they've developed that land in just 30 years... used to be the "high desert" now its suburban hell.
High Desert is considered to be above the San Bernardino/San Gabriel mountains. Victorville, hesperia and adelanto along with Lancaster and Palmdale.
@@NickL951 to a guy from Northern Maine, Riverside could have been Mars. I didn't know about the high desert specificalities to be honest. Woops.
high-desert is above Cajon Pass , Mo Val is at about 1200 ft above sea level , Riverside is at about 800 ft or so.
@@NickL951 exactly.
@@NickL951 Riverside is said to be on the edge of the Mojave Desert.
Great Race ,!!
Makes me hungry for a SUNNYMEAD BURGER!
I love it, thanks!
Ed Bruce's voice
god what this place would be like today.
The winners Lanier and Whittington were drug smugglers and gentlemen drivers with no sponsor in a Chevy beating Derick Bell in a sponsored Porsche! lol Crazy times
Amazing how none of the announcers were suspicious of the Lanier/Whittington team.
Yeaaaa, a Chevy engine in a purpose built prototype March 83G....and mid season they changed the engine to a Porsche drivetrain......
that Chevy engine was wayyy over displacement, thats why they would win. when the car would be inspected by the imsa official, an envelope with money in it would change hands. interesting times.
@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo both of these Whittington chassis were never porsche powered. Today they are beautifully restored
Crazy to think that four years after this, Lanier went to prison for LIFE for selling WEED! He just got out on October 16th, 2014 after more than 26 years behind bars.
It's not for selling, he was part of a smuggling operation.
+vagabondroller i know crazy. did his first race today. still a brilliant wheelman. stupid sentence. hopefully weed is legalised fully soon.
The Whittingtons were big into drug smuggling and financed their racing and purchase of Road Atlanta with the money. IMSA worked VERY HARD to distance themselves from the Whittingtons and John Paul Sr. after they were busted.
Who’s here after watching Bad Sport?
I was at Riverside for the last race, at Daytona for the first race of the year and saw the Andrettis destroy the tranny of the first 962
Its a shame Ford pulled the plug on the front engined Mustang GTP. That cars full potential was never fully realized.
Kyle Morrill Well they did come back in 1986 with the Probe GTP. It was the last factory prototype entry for the Ford Motor Company.
The Internatinal Marijuana Smuggling Association
just cut the fcking air hose off , unreal !
18:36 bruce jenner
Did he/she race in the women's div??? ;)
Buckle Up Buckaroos!!!
what a ball-less kook he turned out to be.
@@billenright2788 It raced in the "IT" division.
I used to watch the IMSA races here frequently. This was real raw racing then. None of this paddle shifting no clutch stuff. Nowadays any computer games teen can race. But this is the real deal where heel-toe and transmission match shifting required actual driving talent.
Did I just hear "Bruce Jenner" or should I say, the former man now woman known as....hmmm
Yes, that was him.
Haha bruce Jenner
He was an ok driver.
