- The 33 year history of the International Race of Champions started on October 27, 1973 at Riverside. Driving Porsche 911s, the series attracted 12 of the greatest drivers in the world in 1973. The legends included
Mark Donohue, Peter Revson, David Pearson, Denny Hulme, Bobby Unser, A.J. Foyt, Bobby Allison, Richard Petty, Gordon Johncock, Roger McCluskey, Emerson Fittipaldi, and George Follmer.
Originally, Jackie Stewart was supposed to compete in IROC too. But when he retired from racing after winning the 1973 Formula One championship, A.J. Foyt was a late replacement, he had already turned down the offer originally.
This is sort of a weird broadcast. The audio went out at the start of the race so ABC played music for the first three laps. This version cuts off the finish when Mark Donohue won. So I guess this upload is better than nothing - Спорт
I miss Riverside so much. Got to race there in the 1980s but earlier I saw Parnelli Jones win the Trans-Am championship for Ford in 1970 and Peter Revson clinch the Can-Am championship in 1971.
You have no idea just how fast this track was until you actually watched them race there in person
As a lover of road racing, I would have loved to drive on that track
When I was 15 I had a 57 Ford Country Sedan loaded with beer and friends. We would back up to the chain link fence on the S's watching the race from the parking lot..1980 !@@deansapp4635
I was lucky enough to have gone a few times, and was at this event at 8 years old. Got Petty's autograph before the race. Riverside was ELECTRIC! No way to describe how awesome it was.
I was a Cal Club SCCA corner worker from '79 - '82. Started going there as a kid.
Used to go there every January to watch the 1st NASCAR race of the year.
The jackie emerson interview is gold lol
It was an extremely racist decision from the fascist Americans!
They thought about a way to put an American on the first place and that’s what they came up with.
No driver should’ve started!
Unfortunately all the Americans were as racist back then..
@@rolux4853Emo gets woke never would have guessed
Wide World of Sports, watched every Saturday.
Thank you so much!
I wished the Porsche was used in more than one season...
Emmo is known for being extremely casual when it comes to punctuality ..
Amazing to see this. I’ve read about this series so many times. Thanks 👍🏻
drivin those ass-happy porsche's on a slippy/dusty track was awesome to watch.
This is so cool 😊
Solid Gold
Awesome! Thank you for posting!❤🏁
jeez, we didn't need a music video with wingy wangy sounds.
It was the seventies
7:19 this is the first time when Jackie Stewart interview an upset brazilian racing legend.
He was red assed for sure..lol.
and after 50 years since this took place, what would happen right now if you take 12 of the greatest drivers right now, who would you think would win.
It would depend in the cars used.
But I’d give Max Verstappen the advantage.
He does a lot of sim racing in various cars; F1, GT3, WEC, Miatas, etc.
Super! Thanks!
✌️🤠💥🌟🌀👍
The first ever IROC race.
4.39 Richard Petty looks so stoked!
I love the content
Man, I would love to have been there. When those drivers showed up Two inspect those tiny little porsches
My man!
What band did the cool mission impossible style jam?
Thank you

Why the quotes around the race distance? Daytona "500", Indy "500", it's so weird!
Why weird ? It told you what city/state it was held in and how many miles.
Now tracks are corporate named and if you're not up to speed, you don't know where they are racing.
@@tsmcbride06 He's asking why the miles are in quotes, which is weird. Nothing to do with the city, state or any of the other junk you were blathering on about.
Some tracks have multiple events and the races are different lengths, hence, 300, 400, 500 miles
@@stillious You could have answered the mans question, but decided to blather on my comment.
I think it's because "500" was a bit of a nickname at first. It was originally called the 500 Mile International Sweepstakes
IROC started out as a true International race of champions. Unfortunately by the mid to late 90s, it had become basically just another NASCAR series. And I'm afraid the SRX series is quickly following suit.
Honestly this is like saying Indy car and F1 are basically same cars, since they are both open wheels. the only thing common with IROC, NASCAR and SRX cars are rollcages and fenders.
@@drewwrobel564(and they all wound up becoming oval-only)
No Mario Andretti?? And, ya, Hulme and Fittapaldi were the only international guys. Still, the effort was made. But at leaat they they had Porsches and ran on a road course. It hadn't been NASCARed yet
1973*
Back when men were real men and women were real women.
Yo can you upload those classic MRN radio broadcasts that apparently aren't on the site anymore cause you seem to be in possession of them
