Great story with a fortunate ending. Also fortunate that you didn't crank it with the thing still in there. Your friend is lucky to have a friend like you 👏👏👏

I've only just come across this video, well done for your perseverance. It seems that your friend was trying to save a couple of hundred $ by not paying a mechanic and ended up willing to spend thousands on a new bike. Tell him to ride more and wrench less.

Yeah. He is a cheapo and figured he can do it. He did one already so he figured it will be fine. And it would have been had he not dropped the shim or had he covered the hole. But he doesnt know little tips and tricks so he learned the hard way. But it all worked out in the end.

Great job. I bow to you sir. Yamaha would have cost john a fortune and months of waiting around . You saved the bike and johns wallet. Not to mention his wife from killing him talking about the bike . Nice job.

Motorcycle wrenching is a patient man’s game.

It sure is. And very frustrating sometimes.

Glad you got it fixed; saw something similar yrs ago when a "mechanic" dropped a valve cover locating pin down the head on a Suzuki Bandit....Good times!
He's no longer working on bikes 😉

Hi, I know it’s a long time since this all happened but I think you had a lucky escape back there, that shim was sitting on the front engine balancer. A cam shaped iron club that spins with the crankshaft, it would probably have punched the shim though the front of the engine casing or thrown it under or into the crankshaft area where there is little or no clearance 🥴. It’s Friday 1 October 2021 really enjoyed the videos wish I’d seen them at the time it happened 👍🏼.

@@rsv4pilot114 I ride a 2004 FJR1300 with a 2014 engine and gearbox unit in it, it’s not complicated just think of the engine as a pump all the 2004 ancillaries fit only had to change the crankshaft timing rotor for the early one and have an engineering firm bore out the earlier cam sensor hole in the cam cover (it’s left blank on later engine covers). There is a hole for the later sensor at the opposite end of the cover, I left the later sensor in to blank the hole. I changed the voltage regulator for a 2014 one higher output.
That’s about it really. Runs like a dream 2014 engine only covered 1,000 miles when fitted 3.000 miles now and really quick.
As far as I can tell after searching everywhere it’s never been done before,
Oh your Speedo will be miles out, different number of teeth and pulses from sender on gearbox. You need to recalibrate, I can’t remember the Make but the one I used was from the US I think it was called Midnight, it was a tiny chip with a couple of wires with programming buttons on it, worked perfectly and has done so for 5 years now.

No, how do you learn. How do bike mechanics learn. Life is short just go for it...
