No you are NOT a Protestant. The question of Purgatory lies in its being a replacement for the Way to God the Father - that's why Christ never taught it.

@@CeeOlleab388uh oh, here goes a Protestant telling not only Catholic brothers they aren’t Christian or saved but even going as far as telling another Protestant the same. @CeeOlleab388 Um, no, the Catholic Church does NOT teach that purgatory is another way or a replacement of the way to God the Father and has NEVER taught that. Did you not listen to the video?

@@CeeOlleab388 If you're gonna tell someone what Purgatory is, you should probably know what Purgatory is. It is most certainly NOT a replacement way to God. It's absurd to approach a Catholic, tell them you know their theology better than they do, tell them their theology is wrong ("because, trust me"), and then expect that Catholic to change their mind because you told them to.
If you want to convince a Catholic that Purgatory is wrong, you should learn what Catholics actually believe about it first. I'm certainly open to having a discussion with someone if they 1) understand my faith or 2) maybe don't understand it but take the time to ask me about it so I can share what I truly believe. Then, we can talk about what we actually differ on. You can't talk about what you differ on, if you don't know what it is you differ with.

God bless and glory to Jesus Christ.

This is a doctrine that I have struggled to see clearly. However, one thing that helped me to understand it better, is that it is a state where we see and understand (and thus properly grieve for) the depth and consequences of the sins we have committed but still haven't perfectly repented for.

Thanks for putting on great interviews and content, Matt! Karlo has a lot of great insight. One such seed rooted in Scripture I notice is among the many parallels between the Cross and our personal faith journeys to heaven, and the Exodus:
-All of us begin in bondage to sin (Egypt)
    - Jesus' sacrifice (the Passover lamb) loosed our chains keeping us in sin
    - our Baptism purifies us of our prior sins (crossing the Red Sea)
    - our faith walk is filled with temptations and stumbling back into sin (40 yrs wilderness)
-enduring and finishing our race by reading Heaven (entering into the Promised Land)
Just as the Israelites journey in the wilderness was preceeded by the washing away of the Egyptians in the Red Sea, their entrance into the Promised Land at the end of their exodus was preceeded by the crossing of the Jordan River, with the Ark of the Covenant in the midst of it.
These are two types of purifications: the washing away of sins at our baptism, and the final cleansing of looming sins before entering in Heaven, only made possible by Jesus Christ. Purgatory is our crossing the Jordan to enter the Promised Land.

I don't work off cut and paste quotes.
Karlo has done remarkable work here. In Charity, there is no room for ignorance on this one.
Those who die in God's grace and friendship imperfectly purified, although they are assured of their eternal salvation, undergo a purification after death, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of God.
Without Purgatory, Confession goes out the window, without Confession, Preisthood goes out the window, without Preisthood the Papacy goes out the window, without the Papacy, indefectabilty, infallible doctrines and dogmas truths fallen from Heaven protected by the Holy Ghost and the Chair of St Peter goes out the window, the Holy and apostolic Unversal Church as we know it goes out the window. One of us is correct here. God speed, my friend.

As a Protestant looking at Catholicism (and Orthodoxy) with fresh eyes, this was a helpful talk about a subject I have been very wary of looking into. I just thought it was a late accretion and (sorry) -- "wrong"! Currently reading Aquinas on Purgatory from the Summa too. As an aside, it doesn't seem that the Orthodox and Catholic views on this are that far apart in reality...

The best demonstration of Purgatory in the Bible is Luke 12:41-48 see Dr Brant Pitre video for excellent explanation.

Hebrews 9:27 " And it is appointed unto men once to die,but after this judgement"
Purgatory doesn't exist. We need to get right with the Lord in this life, no second chances after death.

I am a “very protestant” person. I don’t like titles at all I simply follow Christ and try in my fallibility to follow his teachings. I appreciate this because I used to worry about the salvation if Catholics for a long time until I say down about a year ago with a catholic with the intent of open dialogue. The teaching of purgatory and Mary were always my big worries. However I may not be Catholic but I primarily listen to Catholics now. I appreciate this teaching and helped further clarify what I thought Catholics taught. God bless

It's good to know what they believe, they are fellow Christians. I don't agree w/ doctrines like this one, at all. This whole set of extraneous doctrines that go together, purgatory, indulgences, treasury of merit are the ones that disturb me the most about Catholicism. I don't think it affects their salvation to believe it, but it sure would disturb my peace if I did believe it. These aren't peace inducing doctrines at all. This life is tough enough, but then more crap, likely worse when I die. Uggghh.

It seems a lot of people think their sins are only between self and God. But if we sin against the body or the world, the ripples are quite severe.

also, their version of purgatory since they believe we ought to pray for the dead is that those souls are temporarily in hell, and that not all souls in hell are there permanently until the day of last judgement

No friend, purgatory is NOT hell. They are any believers that need to be purified before seeing God. Heb 10:26. When we willfully sin after receiving the gospel, that is very very serious for us all. Most all of us have attachments to sin. That why Jesus said Go and sin no more. If we die with attachments to a sin or sins, we must repent and stop doing that sin. If we don’t, we will be purged and need it bc He is FAR more HOLY than our human minds can imagine. Christ gave His LIfe to save us. We are abusing His death when we willfully sin. This is what Paul was explaining… God forbid we think we can continue to sin as believers. That is abusing and taking advantage of His Grace. That will NOT be allowed. Blessings to you! 🙏🏻

12:34 *You can still have sin on your soul by turning away from God as your final end*
Once you die you are entitled to rebirth but the time for prayer is over, those who are to be reborn are spared the thought of sin, if they didn't they would become overwhelmed by its consequences, they are simply waiting to return, this requires grace.
You can't second guess what happens after death you either know it or you don't, and if you do it is because God has let you know.
You don't get to see the *Beatific Vision* until well after your judgement, (except if your judgement happened in your present life) because we cannot come to the Father but by God the Son who is the Divine Word, and when you see God the Father you see him in Jesus Christ.

The concept of Purgatory is that the sufficiency of Christs death was not enough.

can one do penance for past forgiven sins in addition to the required penance after confession so as to reduce one`s suffering in purgatory?

    • @saintejeannedarc9460
      @saintejeannedarc9460 Рік тому +1

Those are apparently indulgences and they can buy you time out of purgatory. What you said there kind of shows why so many do not believe in it. It's doing yet more penance "for past forgiven sins", so your sins aren't really forgiven.
