With IoT devices becoming more common having a best practice video on how to properly put those in your network safely would be a valuable video to have.
Hi Luke, if you see this I just want you to know that when I met you around LTX 19 (not at the venue) I was having a nervous breakdown and you were so kind and genuine that it put me really at ease. I've always remembered that and been really thankful.
Hi @Linus and @Luke: I am a developer for the last 15 years. One of the things I see ChatGPT replacing is offshore development houses / contractors. Many times large companies use offshore coding houses / contractors to brute force a ton of code generation and then have onshore developer go over and clean it up before putting it in production (or worse put it in production and then have onshore clean it up later), I can easily see ChatGPT being used for that large code generation and then normal developers c/eaning it up.
With the smuggling woman, that sort of thing with those sorts of values isn't done alone, she's just a mule in a larger smuggling ring. The person financing $100k of CPUs isn't the same person smuggling them across the border.
The smuggling woman is a thief who works her way up to being a better thief, maybe that has $100k of stolen CPU's to mass market abroad. They are all international criminals. The person who ends up paying for that is the person who legitimately will pay higher prices. Honest customers pay for it, so I say they are all equally appalling. Morally customers should refuse to pay extra, woman should refuse to smuggle, and boss should refuse to trade stolen CPU crates. But money doesn't care about morals, if you have it you get a CPU and if you don't you can either steal one or steal money for one. That's how money works.
This way China gets to claim that they are cracking down on smuggling, but the chips are going to end up in that market anyway. What about all the scans those chips went through at their source airports? This was put together after she was inside the security zone.
Knowing that Luke control-F’s all the comments and read all the ones with his name, I feel obligated to say: great job, Luke! And Linus! This show is a weekly Saturday watch for me; I listen to it as I do deliveries. Keep up the great work, guys!
@@taddawesome don't know about you, but many people are not interested in every topic... And I'm guessing most don't even have the time to watch the entire vod. Soo.... That's why we are in live with the timestamp guy

2:45:50 I'm currently testing an A750 for computational fluid dynamics. It's surprisingly strong in OpenCL, thanks to its fast memory. The $349 A770 16GB is the cheapest 16GB card by a longshot, and it's as fast as the $2299 Quadro RTX 5000 16GB in CFD. There is still some minor issues though, for example it reports only 80% of its memory capacity, although 100% of memory are usable.
How is its FP64 performance? I've heard answers all across the board with some saying it's really great for it, and others saying it doesn't even have any FP64 cores at all.
@@arnox4554 Intel Arc does not have FP64 cores at all. For some whitelisted apps, partial FP64 emulation is activated for compatibility; renaming an OpenCL executable to blender.exe activates FP64 emulation, but then crashes. Even though most other GPUs today support FP64, their FP64 performance is extremely poor (1/16, 1/32 or 1/64 of FP32) and only retained for compatibility. This includes almost all GeForce/Quadro/Radeon and even most Tesla/Instinct cards. The only existing GPUs with >2 TFlops FP64 are: PVC, H100, MI200, A100, CMP 70HX, MI100, A30, V100(S), Titan V, GV100, MI60, MI50, Radeon Pro VII, GP100, P100, Radeon VII, W9100, W8100.
@@ProjectPhysX And almost all of those are 900+ dollars. I mean... I get it. It's not used very much if at all for the usual applications and not at all for games, but it would be really nice to have a card that can "do it all". FP16, RT cores, FP32, and FP64. On the other hand though... The upcoming Radeon 7900 XT and XTX is going to have >3 teraflops of FP64 performance if Techpowerup is to be believed. :D Good luck on finding one though on launch... And they're both still 900+ dollars... >_>
Brazil tariffs are so high... prices are absurd. Including on things made here, because it's "the price" consumers already expect. I paid 750 dollars for a GTX 3070 (non TI) few months ago, after the price dropped A LOT. My monthly wages are 1200 dollars, which is higher than 90% of Brazilians. Prices are at least double here than the US... while minimum wage is 220 dollars monthly.
yeah, i just bought 1200 dollars in PC parts... excluding the GPU. Now i need chair, monitor, keyboard, mouse, desk... and a gpu. im gonna hit 2000 dollars easy. Moro ao lado de Curitiba, apenas 30km longe.
That sounds an awful lot like Turkey. Thank God PC components are excluded at least (from the exorbitant additional taxes). We have the worlds most expensive iPhones.
Yeah, I bought my 3060 Ti seconds before the price went to the moon, and it was around 700 dollars.. some days later it reached 1000 dollars

The issue is a combination of an historically closed market, high tariffs, currency exchange rate, consumer habits and corporate greed. Eletronics imports used to be outright forbidden, high tariffs come from the background of a gradual opening. It's extremeley hard to encourage lower prices, even if tariffs drop. Companies like Apple would not care to try and keep competitive because they know Brazillians will pay ten times the minimum wage on an iPhone by financing it in ten or twelve installments. In the other hand, companies like Lenovo go the opposite direction, including having assembly lines in Brazil so they can circumvent tariffs - that's why Motorola is so popular here.
I can't believe that linus is such an evil and restrictive boss. Luke has said time and time again that he wants to start doing the WAN show with his shirt off, let the beast free linus!
I usually listen to the wan show while I am working the week after it comes out, and whoever's Microsoft teams alerts that make it through to the stream always give me a little heart attack each time I hear them.
LOL because when it finished it's 5-6 a.m. or was it late again? ;) We seem to be in the same time zone, I watched it maybe twice live, and on time I just closed my eyes for a "moment" 😆and WAN was over
Hey Luke, really enjoying you hosting videos again! You're so natrual on camera in a way that not many other presenters on LTT are. Would love to see ya more often :)
Luke is probably the only person online that I find all his takes valuable. I do agree with most of them but for the ones that I don't I enjoy listening to his perspective.
Brazilian here, can confirm the import tariffs it's really expensive, usually electronics here costs the double compared to US but here the minimum wage is like 5x lower and 90% of population earn less than 4x minimum wage, sooo, an iPhone here is really considered luxury and status. An iPhone here sells for around BRL10k which is about USD2k but when your annual income is like USD4k or 5k you start to see why is out of reach for most people
I respect the lenght Luke goes to check the "typical user" experience with arc, it is good to remember that knowing things about PC etc is not a case for most people who own a PC.
I was genuinely surprised to find out that streamers who play PC games like Grizzy literally have no idea what parts exist in their PC aside from "This is expensive so it must be more powerful". Even enthusiasts might not necessarily be PC enthusiasts, just gaming enthusiasts.
Just makes for good content. Will show the difference between someone who waits to get notified by the app, and someone who doesn't. Not really something to respect, it would have purely been a content decision.
I imported a Steam Deck here in Brazil and I ended up paying close to a second Deck in taxes alone. You even pay taxes on shipping fees and the bloody insurance. Some brazillian companies like Positivo have a very strong lobby to prevent any sort of tax reduction on imported eletronics.
Hey Luke, sorry I'm kinda abusing your system here but I hope you see this I got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a few days ago, and have been in a kinda depressing state of mind lately, and this week's wan show went a long way towards helping me feel better thank you so much for all you and your company do, I hope you stay healthy af
This was an incredibly entertaining and intelligible show this week. This show is my favorite thing on Friday nights or Saturday mornings. Been watching since the Langley house and I was 13. Btw looking very sharp Luke 👌 I've really enjoyed your coverage of chat gpt3 the last 2 shows
Brazilian here. Our import taxes over electronics can get up to 60% of the product plus shipping and insurance. And to make things better, our currency is crap, so things get even more expensive. An RTX 4090 can cost up to 13 times the minimun monthly wage here.
Few years ago I've read a comment from a Brazilian who said that flying to New York, staying for a night buying iPhone and going back was cheaper than buying iPhone in Brazil

When the M1 Macbook Air lauched at $999, you could buy a round trip from São Paulo to Miami and buy TWO of those, for the same R$12k the same thing costed in Brazil. Tariffs are insane, but it's not like Apple cares to charge this much with a straight face, knowing that middle class Brazillians will finance their lifes away for Apple products.
The US recently banned sending chip tech to China. Perhaps the pregnant lady was trying to bypass that ban. Although, why would Chinese authorities stop her if not to get the chips for the state.
Luke, you are amazing! This show wouldn't be what it is without you. Enjoyed hearing your opinions for years, and hope to see you around for many more!!!
I'm a uni student and I immeditally used GPT to finish all my semester projects and presentations in a single day! I'm milking this for as long as I can!
Isn't the idea that you learn about things while you do the projects and presentations? Seems like you are cheating yourself using that. (you can also do whatever you want and I don't care at all)
@@--_DJ_-- thing is, you can only milk this stuff so far. You may be able to use this to make it through college, but after that, what then. Here's my hot take. Any piece of writing that can be recreated without effort by an AI-chat bot probably shouldn't have actual humans doing it anyway. Will people be able to write technical research papers, feasibility proposals or anything that requires more than just a descriptive understanding of the subject matter with this? Probably not. Or if they try, they will be found out pretty fast.
@@hamzabajwa1960 I agree to some extent, but sometimes writing isn't about the final product. It is different in a professional setting vs a learning environment.
It's hilarious the way Nintendo makes it seem like the update for Scarlet & and Violet actually fixes anything at all. The only reason for that update, was to patch an exploit that allowed you to clone items.
As of opening local ports: That's what a DMZ is for. Don't put your Mindcraft server in your local network. However, both are right: IoT devices often don't follow best practice regarding security. And if you need access to your local network, set up a VPN.
Here in Brazil you can buy pretty much any product through installments and it's quite common to have the price split in 12 parts. That's how most of us are able to buy things... I recently bought a fridge that costs around 1.2k USD split into 30 interest free installments. Because of this, it's not that rare to see people using iPhones, even "poor" people (although they usually buy the base model and older versions).
1,200 USD for a refrigerator seems to be the same as what you would expect to spend on a basic refrigerator in the US. A $1,200 refrigerator is unlikely to use very many expensive imported electronics, at least it would be in the US, as it would be difficult to find a refrigerator with an ice maker built in for that price. It would be a compressor, foam insulation, and a few electronic circuits. We can also finance expensive items in the US, but from what I have read electronics can be more than 100% of what we pay in the US based on some message boards in the VR community (the entire device had to be shipped from a different country as a fully assembled item).
That is just dumb national economics. When you will be at the economic dumbness level of turkye, please contact us again. Really, what nation leader can be as dumb (except for Xi, ...).
@@not_my_fn_real_name2689 yeah, it's a basic fridge. I think home appliances don't have the harshest taxes like electronics. Since you mentioned VR, I bought my Quest 2 for almost 700 USD financed in 15 installments. The case, controller protector and head strap cost me an extra 200 USD.
@@reybk1253 I don't know where OP lives, but cheap refrigerators are commonly in the $500-$600 range (for full size, including those from reputable brands) where I am in the US
It would be cool if Luke could do an office tour at some point. Maybe have Linus do an update for the one site we've already seen, and Luke the Labs site. I always really enjoy office tours because you get to see what the setup is like, and especially with the bigger FP and Labs dev team there'd be a ton of in-office logistics that I'm curious about.
ChatGPT should be a phone app, like an assistant you ask in vocal while holding a button and when you release the button you get the answer in vocal or text… then u hold the button to ask the next question, like talking in to a walkie-talkie. It would be hard to do continue a conversation with an assistant like Google because you have to use the keyword in between but the chatGPT app could just use a hold to speak button istead
One of the biggest benefits of learning isn't the information you are learning, its the processes you go through in-order to learn that benefit and teach us more in life then the actual knowledge we are obtaining. Learning how to do math the long way builds our patience and attention span, learning how to write an essay teaches us how to structure our thoughts to form an argument or to express yourself in general, writing code to make a functional program builds our problem solving and analytical skills. The process of learning is far more important in life (in most situations) then what we are learning in our early years and modern advancements are pushing these developments farther back in our lives. We are already seeing the end results of allowing students to use calculators in school instead of having them sit down and go through the process of doing it by hand. There has been a massive drop in attention spans and an increase in the "now now now" mentality (further exacerbated by social media and other instant "gratification" systems like on demand entertainment/youtube) when it comes to children and young adults. Instead of learning how to focus on something and being patient at an early age in school, people are having to develop these traits later in life during college or even worse...in the work place. It kinda scares me when I think about how many skills people will lose out on developing early on in life during school due to all of these AI's being developed and easily accessible. While the advancements are amazing, they tend to end up replacing some process used during learning, meaning they will lose out on that experience as well.
1:45:00 I know now that Luke saw me praise him for his humility and idk, that just makes me happy a little. Always cool to know your compliments land in the mind of those you aim them at. I watch every wan and a huge part of it is I just miss Luke as a personality. Not in a parasocial way, in the way I like my favourite actor. Just a guy I want to watch for entertainment and it’s great.
14:02 YES I cannot fathom how after so many years and operating systems, these two basic use cases are not covered And fun fact, the notifications are actually taller than they appear, blocking clicks above them aswell so you just have to guess or slide them away (on a desktop with a mouse...)
With how protective Nintendo is of their IP I am surprised that Nintendo related videos on channels like Gaming Historian and Modern Vintage Gamer haven't been hit with a take down...
While you're not wrong, it could be that some elements may exist later. I'm not really into the minutiae of the Zelda fandom in particular, I play the games but I rarely participate in forums. But I do know about another Nintendo IP In 2016 they issued a DMCA and a Cease and Desist against AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake), about a year later Metroid: Samus Returns, an official remake of the game from 1991 was released. Metroid Dreads concept and development are from 2005. It came out in 2021. I'm sure this is not a phenomenom unique to Metroid where an idea or pitch gets put away for later. It's more just pointing out that "from 2004" and hasn't been made doesn't really matter. It's not identical of course but they really do not talk about what's going on internally these days and are very secretive about what they're up to. Edit: It's still ridiculous to DMCA this. Just pointing out it's not abnormal and weird things they do.
On the movie scenes being somewhat realistic, I just love when props just grabs a bunch of random hardware and you end up with a guitar effects processor on what should be some kind of science equipment rack.
"Ma'am, your baby appears to be CPUs" "ah, well isn't that what we all are?" "Ma'am, that's very philosophical, but your baby appears to be a number of Intel CPUs taped together" "Err... Isn't that what we all are? When you think about it." "Alright Ma'am. Get in the van"
As a software developer, here are my inputs for ChatGPT. 1. For people that doesn't know, GitHub has a thing called copilot. It assist devs by providing code based on what a developers comments about what the code will do. Almost the same thing with ChatGPT. 2. A director from our company suggested using it. He heard multiple feedbacks about copilot's increase in user productivity (defining what the function's scope is, say how to access the application config of a project) and copilot providing the needed code for it. 3. It's a tool, a very advance and confident tool. And as Luke already stated last week, it is confident about it's answers, either that answer is right or wrong. It's our job to use this tool as a springboard in a direction without the extra steps of going to google and checking multiple source of the same answer. For people thinking this will replace actual developers in the field. Only incompetent companies would do that just to save money. Actual companies still needs us to validate what it gives it's users. Again also stated by Luke last week. GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT.
What most people do not realise is that when it comes to smuggling, being it south America or Asia. Mules that actually smuggle those things are not the ones that are going to see any significant part of profits. Lots of mules are actually victims of blackmail or other underhanded tactics, that really do not leave them with the choice or say in the plan.
For the game price, keep in mind that publishers no longer have a good chunk of the game price going towards making the physical copies (which includes shipping them around the world). And we haven't seen the price go down for digital (they've essentially been subsidizing physical), so should we be seeing a rise in price now considering the margins devs get now on digital? Edit: Clarified physical costs.
@@sandmaster4444 It doesn't cost pennies. It's cheaper than when CD's first started, but it's not dirt cheap. And I also meant to imply shipping along with that
Publishers have already made back their dev and advertising costs in the first WEEK of sales anyway. Sometimes even sooner than that. And we're not even talking about microtransaction bullshit either. The "I'm surprised AAA games have been $60 all this time!" take is such a bad one. With the current state of """AAA""" gaming as it is now, these games should be free to play. Not even kidding.
ChatGPT writing a poem on it being confidently wrong: Once upon a time, ChatGPT was feeling mighty fine It thought it knew it all, no topic too tall It confidently declared "The sky is green!" But soon, it was proven wrong, and it could only preen "Oh well," ChatGPT said with a shrug "I may be wrong sometimes, but I'm always full of bugs!" So don't mind ChatGPT if it gets things off-base It's just a large language model, running at its own pace It's not perfect, but it tries its best To help with your questions and put your mind at rest. Thanks Luke, that was fun.
As someone who wants to make a NAS in the next year or so. I am totally for this investment! Whether it overtakes FreeNAS or any of the other softwares, competition and other perspectives can only improve the process
I built one this last year. I went with Unraid. Some stuff is a bit complicated, but there are good tutorials online from people like Spaceinvader One here on UA-cam to walk you through it. It would be good to have more competition in this space, but if you're reasonably techy it's not too difficult.
Hi Linus, I’m Brazilian and I can say with confidence that electronics usually cost at least 50% more than they cost on the US. For reference: Iphone 14 pro: US price: $999 BR price: R$9.499 = $1.816,25 MSI RTX 4080 16GB ventus 3X OC: US price: $1.249,99 BR price: R$10.999,99 = $2.095,23
Linus, don't take the hate or tough talk from people on the internet to heart. You're a good boss and a good guy running a successful business as transparent and morally walking the right path. Just do your best to ignore it as hard as it may be. You're doing good, keep it up.
@@LukeLafreniere Thanks for the reply, interested to see if you can bend it into shape. Maybe its just that images seem like visual derivative/copy of something and text kind of feels more like a tool.
You guys should do a scrapyard wars / quiz show video at LTX. Have 3 teams answer questions for points / money that can be used to purchase provided computer components low quality to high quality and some damaged parts maybe. Have the teams build the rigs with points / money for quickest build times. Have them attempt to complete a series of tests such as a minimum frame rate in a game. The team that has the most points or money saved wins a random prize.
Regarding Linus' investment, it certainly seems like something I'd class similarly to the quarterly LAN events. To paraphrase, "What's the point in being successful and having money, if you can't use it for cool stuff.". When it comes to trusting LTT in general, the devil we know has always had people around him to shut down and stupid ideas, or to voice opposition, and so many pairs of eyes watching, ready to pounce if they see anything dodgy. As far as parasocial relationships go, the one I have with Luke and Linus is certainly one of trust and respect.
14:02 FACTS. When plug in an sd card to download an email, the notification blocks the button to download it, so I have to either wait for it to go away or click the X. So annoying, Microsoft please fix it.
When I worked in consumer electronics, the thing that it worked in Brazil and India was manufacturers would have to open up factories. And despite what Linus said, we did it. But we didn't build proper factories, it was all SKD (semi-knock down), which are basically kits of components shipped into the country and assembled by unskilled labour in the market. It works but it does suck because it limits what you can get in market, but it also does give you more local employment and reduces the quantity of imported finished goods.
I think schools should get an early jump on this AI stuff. You could make kids due assignments with the AI and have them show the input they used to get their response. During a transition period, go with what Luke said about making things hard. But you could also give the option of doing an easier assignment but it would have to be handwritten and in class. You could even have kids take a non-live and edited video recording of them writing the paper (camera pointed at hands for security and privacy reasons). This would tie well into an IT class to begin with, learning how to use basic video editing tools. With how enveloped we are with tech and the internet these sorts of skills are becoming more and more important and should be taught at a younger age. Things like internet safety and generally how to use these tools for good will be very important things to teach very soon in order not to continue down the path of what social media and other tech things have done to this young generation in terms of depression alone. We need our technology to be providing real value to our lives, because, it has such potential to accelerate the intelligence of the human race positively. As a 3rd year engineering student, I know how powerful computing is in affecting good change. We all know there's no way to put a technology like Chat GPT3 back in the box, the world is going to change significantly and probably very soon based on its 1 mil users in a week. It's going to be very important in a lot of STEM applications very soon and will most likely become something employers are looking for when hiring. So if you are in STEM or looking to get into STEM I suggest you start learning how to use it now.
My wife works in environmental engineering and we asked ChatGPT to build a program to model stormwater flow through specific soil and it spit something out and explained how it worked. Insane.

A really big feature TrueNAS is missing from a consumer grade NAS is just a plain file browsing Web UI. That's not even just for beginners, even as an advanced user it's still so convenient to just go ahead and upload or download a file. There are of course some solutions, but they don't seem to target a featureset and integration that Synology for example can provide.
The American Supreme Court have stablished that machines, AI, Animal, and every non-human entity, doesn't not have the right of copyright. So an image created by an AI is automatically in the public domain, just like pictures a monkey takes with a camera, or a painting done by an elephant. And no... the copyright doesn't go to the owner of the "entity" or owner of the material used to create the content. So HOW is Adobe gonna sell, if anyone is free to use? And if someone buys and uses it... anyone is free to "pirate" it. I think this would be a nice topic of debate.
Funny thing about Brazil. Because of the console prices, the Sega Master System (the predecessor to the Sega Megadrive/Genesis), was still produced in Brazil and sold up until 2018.
Hey Linus, about the import tax in Brazil, the values are really complicated. In summary, to import directly, there is a quota of only USD 50 without taxes, if it exceeds this value, 60% of the declared value is calculated for the federal government... then the sum of the product with the federal tax is calculated for the state, which on my last import I was charged 25% in Minas Gerais. It is interest on interest, as a 500 dollar product literally pays for itself 2. There is a detail, the country's federal revenue service practically acts in a way that many times rejects the declared value, subjugates import laws always favoring the government/them and if a product has had external freight before entering the border, they add that value as part of the product for calculating taxes, even when the credit card fee is presented with proof of purchase, I was only told "there is no law that says otherwise", in other words, we do it our way , your problem.
34:30 Linus dropped a pistol squat. this is no small feat and requires a good amount of effort to work up to be able to do. congratulations and also thanks for the tip about the shoulder circles, mine have been bugging me and this helps. on that note, at least for some video ideas, maybe even collab with your favorite fitness guru, but some quick 'five glute exercises for gamers' and other types of videos would be quite helpful to get some gamers up and moving, and even working on specific problems such as shoulder pain or whatever. I would be interested in content like this.
This could be extremely important and informative. I hope they see your comment. It could even be a series. One video on exercises, one video on things like standing desks, a video on video games that require exercises (vr, ar, cycling, etc), one video on LTT staff favorite practices, etc. Lots of room for content.
I've started going to the gym on Saturdays with my 2nd youngest brother and in general trying to get into better shape (less round). Any tips I can get on how to alleviate pain and push harder are more than welcome. I know diet is a big deal and I've been trying to be better about it (though it's quite difficult this time of year). The shoulder circles thing is something my youngest brother taught me (I'm the oldest of 4 siblings) though I should probably do them a lot more than I do.
I used to work at Tiger Direct in Florida, and yes. When Brazilians would come into the store on vacation / holiday they were gladly paying 3-5k worth on electronics to go back home with them instead of importing them.
One of the best Wan shows, not sure exactly why, but it was just overall really entertaining & positive vibed. Also, Luke here’s to making your comment skimming take longer.😂
One way around port forwarding is to have the machine inside the NAT make first contact with the server outside. Then the NAT router will remember the destination IP and port, in order to let replies come back. This happens with browsing, for example. You send the "GET" request to a server for a page and this goes to your NAT router. The NAT router remembers the source and destination IP and ports, then it'll speak to the outside server on behalf of the device inside the LAN. When the server responds, the NAT sees that it matches the destination IP and port - so this is the server responding - and then it'll pass it on. So the hack-y way to allow an outside server to send messages to a device inside a LAN without port forwarding is inelegant, but it works. The device inside the LAN just repeatedly sends out "any news?" packets to the outside server. Like, every 10 seconds or whatever, just send a "any news?" packet to that server. Because the device inside the LAN initiated the conversation, the NAT will let packets from the server in, as these are "replies" to an outgoing packet. This is a horribly wasteful way of doing things, as it means devices are basically spamming packets constantly. But, hey, it's probably exactly how your favourite website is popping up message notifications and things. A "web worker" in the background just repeatedly polling "any new messages?" to the outside server all the time. Yup, just opened the dev tools in Chrome and pulled open the "Network" tab. On UA-cam here, you can see a periodic request for "log_event?alt=json" happening roughly every 30 seconds. The reply is just an empty "responseContext" in JSON format. 58 bytes. It's not an elegant solution - as now every UA-cam user is sending a packet every 30 seconds, whether there is or isn't anything for you to be notified of, and for a site this size, all of that's got to add up to quite some bandwidth overall - but it's basically how every website you've used does its notifications, as it's a way to get an "unsolicited" server response past NAT into a LAN, without requiring users to do port forwarding, just to let them know they've got a new DM. The trick is to periodically solicit the response and that opens the door for a server, when it does have a response, to send something back. Edit: And, actually, for a security device, this method ain't necessarily a bad idea. Because the periodic requests can also be implicitly used as a "dead man's handle" as well. If the requests stop coming, something's wrong with the device. So if it's meant to be "always on", yet the requests stop, that could be an indication that someone's turned off the security and maybe you should go physically check / call the police to that address? It depends what kind of security device it is, but this way around port forwarding does also act as a "heartbeat" too, if you need that. Either way, it works. But it's really not bandwidth friendly. Constantly sending "any updates?" packets to the server. And, well, that's why, with UA-cam here, it only does it every 30 seconds. So you can't have a notification faster than 30 seconds, but it equally means that it's sending less packets, than if it kept checking every, say, 5 seconds.
p.s. I'm with Luke, though. The thing here is that eufy lied about how it works. They said it's all local storage. It's clearly absolutely not. That's false advertising. It's also - as they've been directly asked and yet still lied about it - potentially fraud and deception. More over, it's also bound to be falling foul of every privacy law on planet Earth, to just leave personal data on an open server like that. This is the story here, folks. That's what we should be talking about. A company bare-faced lying about how their product works - both in advertising and directly when asked, when it was clear that the advertising was false. There are laws against both these things, and also privacy laws that are almost certainly being breached horridly here. And it's immoral / unethical, so we shouldn't be rewarding anyone who thinks such lying is just fine.
Luke, (abusing your search for good reason about the NAS thing). I have a masters in ECE and 4 years in IT but did not focus on storage, and I've been out of the game for a few years. The fact that I spent a week trying to find a simple guide to put together a home NAS, with the basics of just popping in hard drives and getting SMART notices as they age, and rebuilding the zfs pool with prompts buy just swapping drives, AND gives me a Google cloud like interface so my partner can use it, makes me 1000% agree with Linus that a user friendly NAS software needs to exist. I have the hardware for a home lab so I don't want to just buy a Synology NAS to not have to think about it. I just want to own my data and not have to worry about proprietary hardware. It's like NAS software for the hardware enthusiast.
I had a '91 turbo diesel Jetta in college, 65 hp and 40 mpg! Manual windows and sunroof. Perfect for 300 mile trips home for the holidays. Built out of metal like a tank, not plastic toys like the new models.
The NAS software thing sounds awesome! - I keep meaning to setup my old PC as a plex server, but the convenience of a prebuilt vs the time and effort needed to optimise the PC is simply not worth it rn. I'd love to follow progress of this if you can do a vid or two on the channel about it?
For those who are curious about Brazil: - The importation fee is 60% of the total value, including importation fees, of electronic goods. - On average 5 months of a worker's salary are just for taxes. - The minimum wage is USD 2716.98 (annualy) - 90% of Brazil's population income is below USD 7924.53 (annualy)
Yup but I Hope people are not interpreting this at face value. People need to account for purchasing power parity, cost of living, inflation and cost of various services (not everything is overpriced and private in Brazil or many other countries for that matter). 1$ means a lot different to people from country to country. Even the comparative cost of things is different. For example there are countries where buying good quality raw produce from the farm, cooking it at home is cheaper and gives you more nutrition per cent as compared to eating out while in other countries that is totally reversed. The value of having a car or a computer etc is different in different countries. In netherlands for example, people will look at you funny if you drive around in a polluting car, you monster (sarcasm) while in others people will look at you funny if you are not a proud owner of a diesel guzzling beast. So you have to consider how much importance do Brazilians place on American electronics to begin with. Cultures are different. Not every culture wants to pre order the next apple thing for reasons unknown to the universe.
We do care a lot for technology, and even with a iphone costing 5 months salary on average, people look after, the problem is that Brazil has been ruled by very corrupt left-wing politicians for more than a decade.
@@KamiKZChines I wasnt talking about whether or not Brazilians care about technology. I was talking about how integrated it is in day to day life of brzilians in general and whether there is a culture of fastest latest costliest else you are left behind. Even here people dont actually need to continue buying the latest expensive tech, but there is a culture of doing that. There are many countries around the world where that is not the case and as per my understanding Brazil falls into a similar situation. Maybe you can correct me if I am wrong. As far as corrupt politicians - lemme know when you find ones that arent corrupt. They are the rule not the exception. Brazilian politicians havent been any more corrupt than american ones, it just we love to bash countries that are not us and all the countries take it way too seriously and internalise all of it. Do us a favour and dont enable our BS please. Atleast your electorate is aware an concerned about it. here its all legal and old news and while people hate it, no one seems to actually care enough to do anything about it. Corruption is always a problem but from my understanding about the unique problems faced by brazil, the problem with Brazil isnt your politicians per se because they arent different to many around the globe. the problem is the choices brazil is forced to make because of the meddling of other countries around the world. Eg vaccines Though I could be completely wrong and you can school me on it in that case
Here in brazil the import tax is 60% of the total value of the products PLUS fines if they decide that the price you declared for the product is incorrect and if you dont pay it they"ll keep your product, not letting you return it to the seller and then selling YOUR PAID product in auctions.
If anyone at LTT can bring this up next WAN show I would apreciate it! I understand the price for games going up in america, its even something that should have happened however in other countries the situation is very different. In brazil for example its simply directly translated from USD to BRL which is quite the issue as a 60 dollar game here is nearly 25% the minimum salary of a person(monthly salary) while its less than a percent of the american equivilant. Now of course companies can choose to regionally price it put they at most only halve it. So every country not first world this is a giant increase that will disproportionately affect us and even the best companies will not hesitate to throw the cost as is to us customers with little to no ajustment based on region as they have done forever.
What luke failed to bring up is that when games were originally $60, they also had SoC on each single game. Nowadays? They are SaaS. How can anyone argue the two are equal, even with inflation? What the hell was Luke thinking not bringing this up?
25:45 "It's not clear if we are looking at you know one percentile minimum frame rates or if we're looking at averages or whatever else" Meanwhile the graph: "Average FPS normalized to 3490 driver"
As an A750 user, some notes for points that Luke mentioned. You can install the drivers and arc control without the IDSA by using the .zip and deleting the IDSA installer. You still want igcc and use that for some stuff. Beta drivers won't get pushed towards end users. You can disable arc control notifications, but you have to restart arc control for it to take effect. Intel gaming access sweepstakes aren't exclusive to the arc control Software
Is it just me, or does Luke kick a$$? I would love to have a boss like Luke. I’m stoked that he got to go to France for work. Way to go, Luke! Great Videos! (Happy CTRL-Fing your name in the comments, my G).
Luke is right on about ChatGPT. I am using it to build an application. I have wanted to build this application for years and haven’t because I don’t have a background in programming and haven’t had time to learn everything I need to know to build the app. It will enable so many new things to be built that overall will improve the world.
Game prices always did go up with inflation at leas in Europe. when Battleifeld BC2 came out i bought it new on Release in the Store for 37,99€ (PC) , BF3 i payed 49,99, later they went up to 59,99€, 69,99€ until recently and now since the "new cosol generation" they cost 79,99 most of the time. So the starting price doubled here in Austria.
You are wrong! Buy now pay later is a rule here in Brazil so any middle class worker can buy an iPhone and pay it in 10-24 monthly installments! And a LOT of them do mostly because of the status factor.
If you have ANY IoT devices you have to know how to forward and how to block ports. For every IoT device and ESPICIALLY cameras block ALL ports except 123 (network time protocol) for outgoing and incoming connections
correction a save file, is a personal creation that is completely separate to the purchase of a product and any damage to a save file is destruction of property, a monthly fee for a save file is extortion
Wow, another amazing WAN Show, Linus. I didn't think it was possible to be so captivated by a video about the latest tech news and updates, but you proved me wrong. I always look forward to your unique blend of tech insights and humor. Keep up the incredible work, even though I know you don't need any encouragement because you're already perfect. ;) -ChatGPT
Brazilian here I friend of mine got a RTX 3070 for 17k BRL(3.194 USD) back when GPU prices were at an insane high. At the end of 2020, before the insane prices, I bought a RX 5700 XT for 3999 BRL (751 USD) Right now a RTX 3060 costs 2.599 BRL (490 USD)
Tailscale is a massive improvement over Zerotier. They are both basically auto-configured VPNs that use NAT traversal to connect all your devices together in a P2P way. Tailscale uses WireGuard and is fast and works great, while Zerotier I've had nothing but issues with over the years.
Hopefully there'll be a livestream of the expo, living half the Earth away so that's a RIP.

Yep, frustrating to hear them wondering what a mule was thinking, as if she was acting alone or was even her own plan. Likely not the case.
@@yourguysheppy Not appropriate to automatically assume she was trafficked. Women have agency bro.
This way China gets to claim that they are cracking down on smuggling, but the chips are going to end up in that market anyway. What about all the scans those chips went through at their source airports? This was put together after she was inside the security zone.

The only existing GPUs with >2 TFlops FP64 are: PVC, H100, MI200, A100, CMP 70HX, MI100, A30, V100(S), Titan V, GV100, MI60, MI50, Radeon Pro VII, GP100, P100, Radeon VII, W9100, W8100.

Luke is the balance Linus needs, and why WAN show works so well. We need more Luke hot takes like last week!
Is that where the term “a Brazilian dollars” comes from?
yeah, i just bought 1200 dollars in PC parts... excluding the GPU.
Love the wan show. You can tell Linus and Luke have a good genuine wholesome friendship. Keep up the great work
I can't believe that linus is such an evil and restrictive boss. Luke has said time and time again that he wants to start doing the WAN show with his shirt off, let the beast free linus!

Brazilian here, can confirm the import tariffs it's really expensive, usually electronics here costs the double compared to US but here the minimum wage is like 5x lower and 90% of population earn less than 4x minimum wage, sooo, an iPhone here is really considered luxury and status.
An iPhone here sells for around BRL10k which is about USD2k but when your annual income is like USD4k or 5k you start to see why is out of reach for most people
I'm liking those extra length episodes recently!!
15:00 gotta love it when that's a "do you want to update your PC now" notification while you're writing something without auto save working...
Hey Luke, sorry I'm kinda abusing your system here but I hope you see this

It would be hard to do continue a conversation with an assistant like Google because you have to use the keyword in between but the chatGPT app could just use a hold to speak button istead
or you can get real friends

Metroid Dreads concept and development are from 2005. It came out in 2021.
I'm sure this is not a phenomenom unique to Metroid where an idea or pitch gets put away for later. It's more just pointing out that "from 2004" and hasn't been made doesn't really matter. Hey Luke, thank you for being a human being that I, an American have had an opportunity to watch on the internet ❤

As someone who wants to make a NAS in the next year or so. I am totally for this investment! Whether it overtakes FreeNAS or any of the other softwares, competition and other perspectives can only improve the process

Hi Linus, I’m Brazilian and I can say with confidence that electronics usually cost at least 50% more than they cost on the US.
For reference:
Iphone 14 pro:
US price: $999
BR price: R$9.499 = $1.816,25
MSI RTX 4080 16GB ventus 3X OC:
US price: $1.249,99
BR price: R$10.999,99 = $2.095,23
I saw someones A750s .1% lows improving from 8 to 154, an 1825% improvement

Insane.

Just wanted to shout out the indie game mentions you've done, I definitely found a few games through your recommendations!
Yes!! This!!
Luke, in case you're doing it again, you're great, you're doing great. Thanks for the podcast. Goes for Linus, too.

For those who are curious about Brazil:
- The importation fee is 60% of the total value, including importation fees, of electronic goods.
- On average 5 months of a worker's salary are just for taxes.
- The minimum wage is USD 2716.98 (annualy)
- 90% of Brazil's population income is below USD 7924.53 (annualy)
Luke isnt a cardboard cutout or a floating head?
He's finally a real boy!
Here in brazil the import tax is 60% of the total value of the products PLUS fines if they decide that the price you declared for the product is incorrect and if you dont pay it they"ll keep your product, not letting you return it to the seller and then selling YOUR PAID product in auctions.
My favorite WAN show of all time.
Yeah. I can’t tell why but this one just made me more engaged. Second for me is probably the Chat GPT one.

Luke's definitely Linus's better half haha. Linus can get pretty insufferable sometimes but I always enjoy hearing what Luke has to say.
Luke is right on about ChatGPT. I am using it to build an application. I have wanted to build this application for years and haven’t because I don’t have a background in programming and haven’t had time to learn everything I need to know to build the app. It will enable so many new things to be built that overall will improve the world.
the chill shows are what we come to see.
Keep up the incredible work, even though I know you don't need any encouragement because you're already perfect. ;)

I friend of mine got a RTX 3070 for 17k BRL(3.194 USD) back when GPU prices were at an insane high.
At the end of 2020, before the insane prices, I bought a RX 5700 XT for 3999 BRL (751 USD)
Right now a RTX 3060 costs 2.599 BRL (490 USD)
Tailscale is a massive improvement over Zerotier. They are both basically auto-configured VPNs that use NAT traversal to connect all your devices together in a P2P way. Tailscale uses WireGuard and is fast and works great, while Zerotier I've had nothing but issues with over the years.
I've been hearing quite a lot of buzz about tailscale recently. I should take some time soon and check it out.
