Someone actually designed something like this as case for the Bambu Lab 3d Printer P1P. Just Google Part 1 - Borg Cube P1P Mod You could probably adapt it for a PC cases
2:14:48 -NAS "drive not detected" error tips I have seen (in my limited experience) that used enterprise drives can be sold by inexperienced resellers without being wiped and decrypted and it can cause all kinds of issues. I think it was Seagate constellation drives with SED (Self encrypting drive) tech the last time I saw it happen. There was a tool you could use to decrpyt them and then be able to format them properly. That may be why a simple format doesnt get it working but using a tool to completely strip the drive would work. Hopefully that helps!
How did I miss this stream? As a Trekie, I would have loved to seen this live. If I had the money, i would buy that Borg case immediately but, in its original Black and Green colors. Maybe program a Rasberry Pi, to play sounds of the Borg....
A short piece of heat shrink tubing works really well to hold RGB cables together (the size of the connectors, of course, not the wires) and it looks much better than tape.
Regarding the talk at around 17:30, my case is close to 20 years old and my GPU fits in it quite nicely (it's a 5700 XT). Also, my power supply is 13-ish years old, so not quite 15, but close, it's modular, it has PCIe connectors, an efficiency certificate (although it's just 80+ Bronze)...
Cool, I'll do just that. I am happy for Patrick Stewart that it doesn't seem to end in fiasco. (Meanwhile hoping that Starfleet Academy won't be a clueless teen drama 😬).
2:07:45 I wish the front panel things were all standardized into a single plug. Well especially the power sw+led, reset sw, hdd led, pc beeper (if available).
When I saw the video's title I immediately thought of the Borg from Star Trek. You can't imagine my joy when I realized it actually was about the Borg from Star Trek. Edit: To all clowns: The thumbnail was added AFTER the livestream finished!
Ok Guys. I NEVER comment on a UA-cam post. 😂😂😂😂. This has been one of the most incredible UA-cam videos that I’ve seen in probably five years plus. You guys did incredible job of covering the topic which is interesting. I think the case is incredible. (In concept). However, it’s when the R2-D2 paint moment when you both are seemingly beaten and the paint step hits. I haven’t laughed so hard, felt so much like I was in a shop with some old friends doing what I love and just been actually entertained while learning a ton; well since I can remember at least. Incredible old school UA-cam ACTUALLY REAL deal feature here guys. Thank you!👌🏻
I was born the year next generation aired. As a fan of Star Trek since I was basically a baby? It's a little bit blossomous to see a Borg cube in white. But this is quite possible one of my favorite LTT videos ever lol
There are a lot of things that didn't work in one vidio lol but I think the video was brilliant. The best pc building video iv seen to date when things don't have problems, then it's boring, and seeing something that can happen a lot more than anyone really admits cool video. Thank you.
1:57:25 hey Linus, if an artist shows you how to draw something, ask them if you should change how you’re holding the pencil. Usually a person’s writing grip is stiff. You can always practice by drawing with your kids.
There used to be a company called Everex that made a grey Borg Cube looking 386 PC. Huge # of add in cards, huge memory boards for the time, and tons of hard disk slots. It even had a nice sliding door to hide the floppy drives.
Don't remember the Borg case they made, but I remember buying a used Everex Step 386 pc in the mid nineties for my now wife as her first computer. I actually still have the original IDE 40 MB hard drive from that old computer with Windows 3.1 on it packed up, lol.
Well as a Graphic Designer who went through nine semesters of design school to get a degree and has been drawing since she was five I can tell you it does not come easy. Like every skill it takes a lot of practice and experience, that is what makes it look simple and easy. My mind is blown when I see Linus just pops in a CPU. Every time I ever built a system I sweated bullets over not damaging any pins. So there is that. ;)
2:21:15 One of my aunts actually have this as "mood light" installed in their bathroom ceiling. They obviously have regular lights in there as well, but that's gotta be cool for when you're just soaking in the tub!
Your black wash is most likely to thin. Sometimes you just have to add a little more paint and try it on a test piece and then add a little bit more until you have a result you want. Also black washing that much surface area is going to take longer than you might want for video to get right. Some time you also have to do 3 or 4 layers to look good.
it also doesnt work very well on super smooth stuff unless you get it just right (like professional skill). As for the size of the work area, you can put it in a spray bottle and just keep spritzing it letting it build up in all the crevice then wipe it down. But a good rule of thumb I think would be the smoother the surface the thicker your wash needs to be and the rougher/more porous the surface the thinner it can be depending on what kind of effect you want. Also if you need to use it really thick its fine because you can literally wet it down then wipe :) Weathering is a pretty cool process, I learned a lot of it watching adam savage
*PRO TIP* Well Adam Savage doesn't know that a few light coats of adhesion promoter 3 minutes apart and within 10 minutes u can easily apply to even the smoothest of surfaces ..
@@DavidDiaz-zp4hu I think he uses some kind of clear coat to make it sticky if I remember right. But he also likes using that hair higher stuff which honestly probably would work well here because how someone mentioned the lights.
@@jareds8729 If I where to do this project. I would not just spay the whole thing in bulk. I would do small sections at a time with a brush being mindful of the location of the fiber optics. You can't anyway with the paint the right consistency the paint would dry before your finished. This is how real prop makers do it. Though I would have an advantage, I wouldn't have a deadline and a director breathing down my neck :).
That's a good fact about the shirt (I was the one with that merch message). Eventually the internet called it The Picard Maneuver even though there was an in-show space ship move called the same. And Riker putting his leg over the chair to sit down is The Riker Maneuver.
Regarding the 7.1 audio out, I'm actually currently using 5.1 analog out to my ancient Logitech Z-5500 surround system that I use as PC speakers. They're "good enough" still, and the metal volume knob is something else.
Redshirt Linus. 17:20 BTW, Linus is wrong about when PCIe power connectors became a thing. 6-pin connectors were introduced in 2005, which is more than 15 years ago. ATX 2.1. Also, there's an actual benefit to Toslink as opposed to SPDIF. You can eliminate ground level weirdness if you don't have grounded outlets.
HA! Awesome! As a Trekkie, this speaks to me! Love the uniform! Best gen Star Trek ever, not a fan of the white case, shoulda been black with green, now THAT would be a Borg cube.
amd stock fan mounting for am2 came out in 2006 so if you got an amd cpu cooler factory/ aftermarket with the 2 point clip it will work all the way to the current am5 motherboards thats 17 years

@@EssxEnergy the shirt pulling down technique is referred to as a Picard maneuver. A Riker maneuver would be the stepping over a chair to avoid bending over, which is something Jonathan Frakes started doing because he was also having back problems in the early seasons.
yeah ANDOR has reinvented star wars.... its nostalgic yet... its like star wars finally grew up with us and learned how to really ground itself and tell an amazing story in an amazing world that constantly gives you its own feeling and vibe when you watch, and it feels good. greatest star wars piece of media ever if we gonna be honest and it finally expands on a world that has so much depth to explore
Watching the cable management and all I can think is that some of the tricks and methods from the early-mid 00s could actually fit a Borg cube theme. For example, the corrugated plastic split wire loom would actually fit. Heck, I saw computers back then with those plasma lights and a green one is actually in a Borg cube. Cases are so much better now, but a part of me does miss the creativity required in those early gaming builds.
1:06:00 - Fun additional fact about the Metric system in the states. We DO use the metric system, just in a backdoor kind of way. Back in the 60s-ish we adopted the international yard which defines 1 inch as exactly 25.4mm. Since then our inches and everything else is built upon the metric system. Just in about the stupidest way we could go about doing it though.
Regarding rack cases for gaming, I put a MSI MEG z690 ACE, i9-12900k, Noctua NH-C14S and GTX 1080 Hybrid in a Silverstone RM42-502. No regerts! Could probably boost a little higher with an AIO, but temps are definitely under control @ ~40C idle.
1:37:50. Caps lock on keyboards is latched by the keyboard PC board. If caps lock or num lock works it just means the keyboard has power, has nothing to do with the PC.
I love how despite not being a Star Trek fan, he puts on the shirt and instantly does the "Picard Maneuver", pulling down on the bottom of his shirt. I bought CherryTree's other Star Trek Case, a more standard case that has tempered glass front and side panels, and an interchangeable acrylic LED-Lit Star Trek graphic on the front. I highly recommend it for any Star Trek fan that doesn't have the money for the Cube. The only complaint I have with them is that I bought their "House Branded" case fans, (really just cheap UpHere RGB fans with CherryTree sitckers on them). The Red and Black CherryTree logo clashes with the look of the system, and the fans themselves are very loud. If you do order a case from them, spring for the better fan options, or supply your own.
@@jeff119990 it might be a decent case but it's a ripoff cause they're pretending it's a Borg Cube and marketing it as one when it's 180 degrees diametrically the exact opposite of a Borg Cube
@@jeff119990 Yeah, I can see that being a problem too. Though the middle support bar for hard drive mounting can be removed, that should make getting the power supply in easier.
Siding with Linus on this one..... Video Evidence: 34:20 - Linus: What else do I need for power? Do I need SATA power? Alex: Yes. There is a corsair hub here [in this bag], right? Alex: Yep! 38:30 - 1:20:54 - Alex: Uh, where did those go?

I miss cube PCs. I have a Thermaltake Core V21, used it for a long time and I love this case. The option to position the mainboard vertically would make even more sense in a modern PC with super heavy GPUs. I mean... most servers and mining rigs go for vertical mainboards for a good reason. And all the cooling area protected by actually good magnetic dust mesh. Sadly I need something that fits at least a full ATX, because I'm going for dual GPU on my next deeplearning workstation. Would love to go for a (bigger) cube or vertical cube-ish case again. But there aren't any with modern tooling that fit a modern system and offer good modularity or convenience. I can't even find any modern case with easy to remove external dust mesh which was one of the most convenient features introduced in the last 10 years...
1:14:00 Argh, the 2x8pin MB power should have gone underneath the gfx card on the left, and the 24 pin and PCIe should have gone through the very obvious cable cut out at the back of the acrylic sheet
You know, this thing is pretty cool looking (if it was the dark grey/black with green lights) and would be something i would consider getting as a huge Trek fan, ... but the pricing just KILLS it sadly!
Thats the way I feel about it. Since it has no front audio, no USB at all, and as Linus pointed out: looks like 3d printed surface wielded together, the price for it just simply is not a justifiable expense. But then, I'm a huge Trek fan and would get this just cause anyways.
For the HDD in question, you need SGformat, I am betting the sector size is not 512 but insted 518 or some other weird value used by some systems for in sector error correction data

i have to agree that the Noctua coolers are pretty big, but worth it. you would be fairly hard pressed to find a cooler that has the same performance, same quietness, and same price as the DH-15. its not impossible, but hard enough that you may as well go with the name brand anyway which in this case is Noctua
1:05:00 i got a jacket with the zipper pull on the "wrong" side and it took me a long time to get used to the variety. It's just been so consistently on the one side my whole life until that jacket lol
I just completed my first build and you were with me every step of the way haha. I watched youtube the whooole time for help. RTX 4070ti with a Ryzen 7 7800x3D. Thing is a beast!
1:04 I don't know know if this like this today, but historically, women of royalty and nobility had servants who would dress them. Because people the overwhelming majority of people are right handed, zippers and buttons were placed on the left side of women's garments so they were on the right side to the servants dressing the woman. Men, regardless of status have traditionally always dressed themselves, so buttons and zippers are on the right. 1:06 The US and UK were both using the imperial system when America gained independence. During the early years, America wanted to establish its own way of doing things and largely ignored what Europe was doing. It was during this time that Europe adopted the metric system. America kept using the already established imperial system, but there have been a few attempts to convert later. Americans, being Americans, have rejected the change every time. I was surprised to hear that the UK is planning to ditch the metric system and return to the imperial system of measurements. Apparently, since Brexit, the UK wants to do its own thing kind of like what the US did when it was celebrating its independence.
Ive been enjoying watching you all. Ive been in the PC game since 1991. This channel is proof you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. Much appreciated and do any of you know the where abouts of Bob and Doug Mckenzie? They owe me for some beer.
I've watched a bunch of your build streams, and this might just be the funniest. Great work. The steady stream of Trek/Wars trolling was hilarious. Thanks!
I really appreciate you advocating for people to be safe and make appropriate decisions over promoting them to buy your product. IE the jacket for motorcycle riding.
I remember when I first tryed vr two years ago and I was blown away but after a couple months I had so many problems with the headset. This headset is the reason I’m getting back into vr
Here's a case from 2006 that still works, no mods needed: LIAN LI PC-7B plus II I'm *still* rocking it over 15 years later. I actually wish it had one more 5.25 bay, so I could use another HDD enclosure in it.
Hey, I still use my awesome, 20-year-old, Logitech Z series THX 5.1 surround sound system. I need those audio ports. Any board that doesn't have them is a deal breaker. Until a system that sounds better comes along. 5.1 on the back of the board is a must! MSI MAG Z790 Max has them, as well as a bios reset button, bios flash back, CPU-less flashing, MSI light load bios feature, best bang for the buck board for the 14900K I've come across. I've tried nearly anything worth its salt.
1:00:00 in regards to aya neo and co my main gripe with their approach is that it gives me pause to drop so much money on a device that unannouced might be replaced with a new model within just a few months, you have to admit that even linus with all his money would be upset if you spent $1500 on a machine that was obselete within 3 months of purchase
I thought the same thing, I keep seeing new models of these devices releasing, it shows adoption of them is high because they continue to invest into new models but it means that you're going to lose a good chunk of value within a couple of months
Regarding the water bottle, I have Hydroflask bottles which are vacuum sealed and dishwasher safe. At least Hydroflask says they are dishwasher safe. So there must be alternative manufacturing techniques which can handle the temperature fluctuation. Maybe LTT could partner with Hydroflask to sell a dishwasher safe bottle!
I had the exact same problem with mine. Couldn't even test with the onboard because I was using a 14700kf. I ended up returning and getting a dark hero instead and eventually got it to work on hdmi, used the windows key+shift +d reset or whatever it is and finally display port worked from there on the dark hero.
OH MY GOD! THAT LOOKS SWEET! BTW Linus, you look good in a TNG command uniform. Hats off to you for knowing who Captain Picard and Commander Riker are even though you don't know much about Star Trek.
1:03:34 I should just get over the zipper on the left side, but Linus made it a point to change the direction of the ratchet selector on the LTT screwdriver because he's used to it being that way.😉
5.1 analog is a must for my Logitech z690 THX certified 5.1 surround sound. So yeah, folks still use them. Of course it plugged into my DAC instead of the onboard audio, but it rocks so hard!
Wait, has LTT not heard about the machine learning program that designed a super car? They used an additive metal 3d printer and it made some really organic looking suspension components that are like 1/3 the weight of standard design. If you guys did a factory tour there, it would probably be a banger.
For reliable, 25 years ago I bought a 2.1 Logitech speaker system, far from cheap back then but pretty solid speakers in plastic laminated wood. They are still going strong. A pretty beefy base unit on them too.
I have been wanting one of these Cases from Cherry Tree for a while now. I am a BORG NERD!!! Most, if not all of my electronics in my home have a Borg Drone designation. My network is a Unimatrix. My server is a Central Plexus. All of my hard drives are labeled as Data Nodes. I would LOVE to replace the case of my personal rig with one of these ATX cases. I just cant afford $500 USD right now
I've got I bad day. And Linus his happy surprise reaction around 5-7 minutes into the video (fiberoptic rgb) was what I need it at lunchtime 😊😊 glad I started the video.
You should've definitely showcased a Star Trek mod called, "Star Trek: Armada 3" for Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion. It's got a faction you can play as called, "The Borg" and the battle cube capital ships are super cool!

2:14:48 -NAS "drive not detected" error tips
I have seen (in my limited experience) that used enterprise drives can be sold by inexperienced resellers without being wiped and decrypted and it can cause all kinds of issues.
They probably use an Intel CPU because it's very hot (39.1°C air temperature) inside Borg cubes.
teh new AMD cpu arent cool either.
Let me be the first comment to state : I actually got your reference! But I don't remember the specific air composition at the moment.

The only real issue with the case, for those who'd be willing, I think is the flexible and brittle plastic as demonstrated early on. That's not cool.
It seems to be a prototype

*PRO TIP*
Well Adam Savage doesn't know that a few light coats of adhesion promoter 3 minutes apart and within 10 minutes u can easily apply to even the smoothest of surfaces ..

Regarding the 7.1 audio out, I'm actually currently using 5.1 analog out to my ancient Logitech Z-5500 surround system that I use as PC speakers. They're "good enough" still, and the metal volume knob is something else.
I'm using them with EqualizerAPO for separate active speakers and sub (downmixing an 5.1) instead of a splitter cable.
In the last couple of years I've bought two sets of those old 5.1 Logitech speakers to use around the house because they work so well
First time watching. IT since 88. You guys got a real TIM and AL thing going. Good Luck.

I was thinking they could've routed cables OUTSIDE the case in rubber tubing or something. Like the Borg drones have on their suits.

Got to say that the Borg cube is the perfect Trek ship to use, I'd be interested to see them try and fit a computer into the 1701-D.

Especially since this isn't a Borg Cube
The color is literally ass backwards 😂

Why would you ever get a white Borg Cube......
1:14:00 Argh, the 2x8pin MB power should have gone underneath the gfx card on the left, and the 24 pin and PCIe should have gone through the very obvious cable cut out at the back of the acrylic sheet
You know, this thing is pretty cool looking (if it was the dark grey/black with green lights) and would be something i would consider getting as a huge Trek fan,
... but the pricing just KILLS it sadly!
Thats the way I feel about it. Since it has no front audio, no USB at all, and as Linus pointed out: looks like 3d printed surface wielded together, the price for it just simply is not a justifiable expense. But then, I'm a huge Trek fan and would get this just cause anyways.
