Here is more or less the real science behind having a putting routine, superstitious or otherwise. The main component of any successful routine is that it should be a unique movement, or other memetic device such a phrase you repeat, which is only ever used/said before a putt. The brain works by running subroutines that execute familiar actions. Think of reaching for a handshake, you don't pay close conscious attention to every movement of your hand you just look someone in the eye and your hand automatically reaches out and makes the connection. The same is true of a putt, it is a familiar action and the brain WILL attempt to create an effective subroutine that automatically executes a perfect putt without having to think about it every single time. Now it so happens that a putt is VERY similar to many other subroutines that your brain runs every day: reaching out to open the refrigerator door, opening your car door, etc. The mechanism behind the curtain of having a routine is that it tells your body you are about to putt and that you are not doing any of the other millions of things that you have subroutines in your brain for. You signal to your brain "Hey, make the motion for a putt, not the motion for opening the fridge." It is a literal hack for the mind/body. When you see Paige pierce, for instance, pick her disc far above her head in a flippy motion it has absolutely nothing to do with her aiming. She is doing a set of motions that forces her mind and body to recall that putt subroutine and execute it.

Damn thank you for the great response! I agree with a lot of this. Do you have any links/articles you could share in the comments here so people could learn more or see examples of what you're describing?
