Learn to tie a Marabou Leech for Stillwater Trout - Ep 112 PF

- I like fishing leeches in the spring just after ice comes off the lakes and ponds. I like to use this as a casting pattern or a trolling fly, but it also works well when dead drifted under a strike indicator on a windy day.

One of my favorite flies
Nice Darren and thanks for the flies!
Thanks Michael! Tight lines
Dandy, fishable fly, excellent use of materials, and clearly explained. Thanks!
Stephen Cifka, thanks! Much appreciated. Cheers
Thanks for sharing--going to give this a try on our local lake, will let you know!
how’d it do??
Nice looking leech pattern. Yet another great tie
Thanks Gary, much appreciated
Thanks for sharing. Very nice looking pattern. Wil definitely be adding a few of these to my fly box.
Hey Steve, I hope you do get a chance. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Cheers
👍 excellent pattern.
HI, I fish a lot of stillwaters and hilltop lochs all over Scotland, and this pattern will work great, thanks for all your hard work, keep the videos rolling. Geo
Thanks for the comment Geo. I'd love to be able to fish these in the lochs, I know they would work well over there. Cheers
Nice looking fly. Looks just like a leech when wet. Thanks for sharing, All the best, Sean
Thanks, Sean, I totally agree on that. Cheers
Just went out using this pattern and snapped off a massive rainbow, works well👍
Awesome leech the best pattern I've seen. Can't wait to tie and fish this one thanks for sharing.
Looks absolutely disgusting when wet which is a real compliment, since that is exactly how I view these critters when wet wading in shorts. The ostrich is a neat idea, since it will avoid the usual marabou wrap around the hook problem on leeches. I’ll bet you could also use peacock herls on the body to give a bit of a sheen.
Thanks a million, FlyTyer1948. I agree, peacock herl would look great with the marabou. Cheers
I had my doubts about the quality of this video until I saw that it was By this channel.
Aaron, thanks, I hope that means that you liked the video. Cheers and all the best in 2019.
Great explanation and video. going to tie some of these for the winter lake stocks near me!
They are like candy for stockers. Good luck
Seems a good pattern!I'll give shot!
nice leech pattern will work out great in my local waters
Let me know if you try it out.
I’ve been looking for this kind of leech, will try to tie some. Thanks.
Nice tie, I'll tie a couple up for the San Juan now!!!
Thanks Jesse. I hope these do well for you on the SJ.
Nice fly Darren, that would work great for large mouth bass in the lakes and rivers near me.
Thanks Larry. I hadn't considered using for Bass, but hey, I'm gonna now.
Nice Leach 👍
Nice one Pal and was wondering if that pattern would work in Scotland on or still waters, lovely fly trying skills and great video all the best Peter.
Hi Peter thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it. I'm sure this will work over in Scotland. I fish this leech mostly on stillwaters from a pontoon boat or a float tube. cheers
Nice! I'm thinking of a specific pond to use this in. Thanks
Thanks for stopping in, Ed, I hope that works out for you. Cheers and Keep a hook in your vise!
Thanks a lot I streamer fish alot stripping a change up might be good
Excellent. Par too the folly bugger family. :-) Ilm making some for a stream that is pertly suited for them. :-)
Thanks TERRYBIGGENDEN
, the trout can really hit these hard. Best of luck out on the water.
Chimo Darren, past 1400 subs, coolness! Nice leech, I like the ostrich body. Too bad about Lefty Kreh passing. Glad that interview was filmed last year at the Tie One On. Thanks and cheers...
Chimo Joe. Thanks, I really liked it as well. Then I got it wet and loved it. Yes, sad news about Lefty. There are a few great interviews here on UA-cam with him. Check out Back Bay ua-cam.com/video/Pdg8aqz-Lnw/v-deo.html I think you'll enjoy. It's nice to have these little gems to reflect on.
Piscator Flies thanks for the link👌. I saw an Orvis video on those 🐉 dragon tails "add on" material. Very sinuous, would make a nice leech but they're pretty long. Pike /bass size. You up on that material? The 2018 Tie One On is this Saturday. I'm planning on going. Clouser, Cohen, will be there. Cheers...
I've been seeing them make the rounds, but I haven't had a chance to see them in person. They are nice and big, I'd probably give them a try for pike and bass. Perhaps even the gar in Lake Ontario would give them a look.
Piscator Flies LOL! Throwing a fly into Back Bay in the 50's was like rolling a wine bottle into a jail cell, you knew something was going to grab it! I love that guy! I have a red revolving spool reel and a rod like they showed in that clip. Thanks man, I'm subscribed to Flymen too but I must have missed that. Amazing how the times have changed. Thanks again!
Rather than ostrich, you can chunk up some scrap marabou or hackle fluff and put it in a dubbing loop to get a similar buggy look and action. Or use mohair yarn and brush it out.
Looks great
Is there a lead free version? Thank you for the tips and ideas
Yes, you can use the lead-free weighted wire in place of the lead wire. You could also use 3-4 black brass beads, one at each stage should work fine. Cheers
Great fly!!! Just go to try and tie it. I hope l do it justice.
Nice! Wouldn't take much to turn it into a neat little minnow pattern, either
Thanks for the comment. Yes, a little bit of grey dun white and red might be a good color.
Great job loved
Thanks Darren, I believe I missed the draw....lol...It is not the draw I wanted it is the technique.
Very nice
Rocky O, much appreciated! Cheers
I have a question. Why put on the ostrich herl? OK, but almost anything works. I just use any kind of black-ish chenille or heavy thread. Flash ok, but not necessary. A few feathers of red maribou does the same thing--calls attention to a 'flaming personality type of leech"--but not necessary. Mainly, just make a good base of thread and start adding black maribou and it will look like a leech. I caught over a dozen trout on one of these just this morning. The fish were eating some sort of diving beetle, a dragonfly nymphs, lots and lots of scuds, a few leeches, and some chrionomids. Not very particular. They wanted the leech moving slowly in three inch twitches.
Money. Well done.
Thank you John Wihl, much appreciated, Cheers, see you in the next one.
Very buggy, good swimmer I bet!!
Thanks Ryan. It's got a lot of nice flow in the water.
I never understand why people show a wet fly in the air. It's just not how the fly will look in the water.
They work here dead drifting them
Thank you Everything Action, much appreciated. Dead drifting has been great with this leech. Cheers, see you in the next video.
