    Jim's Smelt is a vibrant little bucktail that calls for 6 colors of hair plus some herl and flash to round out the wing. This captures the color spectrum of the smelt well and has contributed to the effectiveness of this baitfish fly pattern. The added gills or throat really make the fly pop. The pattern comes from Jim Bernstein of Cape Neddick, Maine.
    There are a couple versions of the bucktail floating around including some which mix al the colors of bucktail to be tied in a single application. I should add that I omitted painting the underside of the head white. It's a nice touch on smelt patterns. If you are in Cape Neddick, ME, stop by Eldridge Brother's Fly Shop (eldredgeflyshop...) and you may be able to get one of these gems from Jim himself.
    For eyes, you can paint them on as I did, or buy some flat stick-on eyes to be coated with head cement or UV. Small eyes work well for this application. You can also add a bit of UV resin to the gills to prevent the exposed threads from fraying.

    A beautiful streamer that would make a good addition to the arsenal of an increasing number of fly anglers targeting northern Pike

    Very nice smelt. Time to hit vice and practice. I usually get to big of a head on my bucktail streamers. Thanks for sharing , Cheers!

      Thanks Steve. Yes, it can be tricky to keep the heads small. Light thread sure helps and lots of practice. Good thing is you don't need the heads too small. ;) Cheers

    Nice smelt Darren! Haven't tied a smelt pattern since I used to fish Lac Memphrémagog for ouananiche (landlocked salmon) trolling big streamers - still have some of those 3 inch long "6x" hooks. Being an old foggie I still prefer to tie those bodies with metal tinsel LOL!

    • @PiscatorFlies
      @PiscatorFlies  4 роки тому

      Hey Hank. Kudos to you for tying with the metal tinsel. I'm much too heavy handed with it and always seem to break it. This one would be perfect for Lac Memphrémagog so long as as it doesn't attract Memphrey. These are fun to tie, but I kinda hate the smell of some bucktails. Cheers

      @@PiscatorFlies When I started tying, metal tinsel was all that there was, I like the mylar but find it easier to get a flat body with the metal (start at the head, wrap to the bend over the bare hook and then back to the head, coat with lacquer or Bone-Dry). Know what you mean about bucktails. the problem is that they are not always prepared "fresh" and that the oils are not removed from the hide well enough; this is true of other organic products as well. Washing in warm water with dish soap (I like Palmolive OXY because it is not too harsh... it is gentle on my hands LOL!), rinsing well, drying thoroughly and generously dusting the whole tail with Mule Team Borax helps. I vacuum off the Borax powder before using. I tend to wash and dust all my hides and capes - amazing how dingy the wash water gets LOL! Really spruces up the feathers too.

      Thanks for the tips on the bucktail. I get most of mine from Superfly and they are processed really well and no smell, supple hides. Some of the Wapsi ones I have could use the treatment. ;) Cheers!

    Chimo Darren. This was an awesome production! That's really a kaleidoscope of a bucktail, I love it. When I mentioned you should tie a streamer I thought you'd tie the one from from your IG that you posed on the Orvis Index book. That was an awesome tie too. Yes I now agree, sparse is better. One thing I noticed is you never took the black thread back farther than where you started it as you tied in the bucktail sections. It looks clean, mine always have thread showing beneath each section, mine usually looks "wonky" :o( This tutorial was a 10, thanks. Someday I'll get me a rotary vise. Cheers

      Chimo Joe. Oh ya, the Supervisor Thos are a little trickier to tie on camera. I think I actually have a couple extra sets of wings I prepared when I tied that. Hardy had send the book just when we were chatting about it. :)
      Good point with the thread. If you take it back farther, you'll get an egg shaped head. The finer thread also helps keep things from piling too high and collapsing. Thanks for the comment, always appreciated. I'll add the Supervisor to the list of flies I need to tie. Cheers
