    For anyone curious, this is a poem from the Icelandic Saga of Egil Skallagrimsson. It appears in Chapter 40. There's also another poem from the same saga that is quite beautiful called - Sonatorrek (The Irreparable Loss of Sons).

    This is actually the first time I heard "My Mother Told Me" in something other than English. Even though I don't speak this language, I feel the english translation reduces it to an extent. This was simply beautiful.

      Old Norse is a lovely language. It's highly compact, with a lot of information being put into the endings of words. Noun endings change according to the part of speech they take in the same way that verbs change according to the tense. This allows the speaker to drop a lot of words that would otherwise be needed in English, making just a few words equivalent to a whole English sentence. It's a lovely language, and worth looking at more deeply!

    • @miniblasan5717
      @miniblasan5717 2 роки тому +12

      It's Icelandic, a Nordic language that is usually called "the modern Viking language"
      As a Swede, I only understand a few words.
      For example, "I'm going to make a sandwich because I'm hungry, should you have one too?" Is very easy to understand.
      But imagine that you can only understand "I * * * Sandwich * * * * Hungry * You * * Too?" so you can perhaps understand how difficult it is for a Swede to try to understand Icelandic.

      @@miniblasan5717 That's kind of how the translation into english feels. Like it's incomplete somehow. You get the idea but there's something missing.

      at mér skyldi kaupa "for me should they(the family) buy". Egill's kin are pissed because he has killed another boy and forced them into an unnecessary a blood feud, His mum however says the family stands to make a profit if they outfit her murderous son as a viking.

      "they ought to buy me" anyway his mother is saying "they" should buy Egil a ship, nothing about Egill himself buying a ship as you wrote and as it says in the viking tv show song.

    “Rise. It’s time. This moment has been a long time coming. You know that you’ve been chosen. You know you can’t keep running. Stop spinning in circles and start believing in the magic, of who you are meant to be. Spread your wings, and don’t forget to take flight. You’ve been growing them stronger since the start of your life. You only get one chance at this; so honey, let’s get it right. You have the power inside you to soar. Don’t ever give up the fight. Dig down deep and find it inside; all of this power you’ve taught yourself how to hide. Call it to the surface. It’s right there, in your mind. Only you can fulfill your destiny and purpose. Brave girl, it is time to fly.“

    Two times I heard the banshee scream. The first time in front of my window, but I was to afraid to look outside though at this time I didn´t knew what in Odins name this was. And the second time at the edge of a forest seven days later. Some years later learned about the banshee I found out that two family members died during this time. Since this experience I know for sure that some things our ancestors believed in actually exist. And I like that. Makes this world much more interesting!!

    I'm amazed at how many of the words are still recognisable for a modern scandinavian. Sure, it's words that have been used for millenia, but still.

      All songs from Skald are good, but this Skald version of 'My mother told me' in Old Norse is more lyric, did you hear the Peyton Parrish version?

    To me it sounds like a mother telling old tales to her child of glory and pain, ending with gentle humming because the child fell asleep. Idk I think too much when I listen to music.
