Catching GIANT Fish in a FLOODED Creek
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 жов 2024
- With the river blown out, I fished Chickamauga Creek with my buddy Phil. I was able to cast net about two dozen threadfin shad, which we used as bait. Our hunch was to catch catfish, but the freshwater drum would not keep off our baits. They were fun to catch, especially the big ones. Don't ever underestimate the potential of a creek...you just never know what could be at the end of your line.
When: March 9, 2018
Where: Chickamauga Creek (Chattanooga, TN)
Time: 10:30am - 12:30pm
Conditions: Breezy, moderate current
Bait: Threadfin shad
Tackle: Gander Mountain "Competitor" medium action spinning rod spooled with 10 lb monofiliament line and a Shakespeare 7'0 medium heavy Wild Cat rod with a Daiwa spinning reel spooled with 20 lb monofilament line carolina rigged with a 20 lb monofilament leader line
Method: Fishing from a dock

Now I know why they are called drums, because whenever they flop on docks they sound like a drum
Lol!
Byyfhfyi
Lol, it's actually because they make a thumping noise internally
Person People 326 I was thinking the exact same thing.
Person People 326 a drum has a white stone behind each eyeball socket it's called lucky stones that's how they make their sound therefore calling them drum fish.
Smartest bass ever. He knew you would pull those parasites off and you practice catch and release, so he hooked himself. HAHA
BJEAKE lol
Yes they are smart.
Friend: _"IS HE ALIVE STILL?????"_
Fish: *"Maybe if I play dead, they won't do anything to me..."*
Joe: * grabs by the gills *
Fish: UGH!
I wish I had brought my bigger net with me.
Chatt Cats Fishing I live by and have fished the Missouri River for 40 years and have caught drum up to 20 pounds almost every spring. Also the best way to insure catching big fish is to bring the minnow net like yours lol.
you’re fishing the boat landing in sauk city wisconsin?
LMAO
Lol fish logic
So proud to see these young men get their pics and video, then return it back to the water. They are just awesome fishermen.
Thanks, James!
You are a good man for taking of those lampreys the fish would’ve died without you!
Man!!! I was crying when you let that giant go! But much respect for letting it go. Hero's do exist!
Thanks for watching!
Ur crazy touching them leech things. Glad u got them off the bass but u r more brave than me. Did u see it's teeth looked like it was from the alien movie. Lol
Haha. Lampreys are vicious little things. Glad the bass swam away happy.
Good vido
That not a teeth they use those to grab their victim then they use their 2 like piranha teeth
U would think they hurt but not that bad i had one on my foot after fishing I went 3 ft. And one was on my foot
Kyle Wellman Those were leeches man, they have anesthetic in their spit. I cant imagine how painful a lamprey bite would be. Poor bass
9:42 when it started flopping had me dying
😭😭😭😂😂😂😂😂
came here just for this comment , i was laughing with these guys 😂😂😂😂
had it dying too
>>> 2:25
Thanks 👍
Dude nice catches those drum are getting ready to spawn and you threw back the big ones that continue the cycle. Mad respect
Thanks for watching!
Looks like they were having fun, which is what's important. Personally, I don't throw drum back. You'll never get rid of them but at least throwing them up on the bank gives the raccoons and other critters a few meals. They're eating tons of the bass/crappy fingerlings that you'd rather have grow.
@@ChattCats hey I'm fairly new to fishing in fact just watched my first fishing video yesterday never caught a fish but I'm addicted already. Just a curious question for your average noob but why do you say the tiny fish will die when you put them in the bucket. Sorry if this is a dumb question that I should know like fishing 101 I was just curious
@@justsomeguywitharedeyes3472 not sure but it's most likely lack of oxygen. Hence the reason people buy minnow buckets with the box that pumps air into the water
@@justsomeguywitharedeyes3472 fish need time to acclimate to new environments. Water temperature and type of water are big factors. Taking them out and throwing them to a diff environment can be stressful to them. Also lack of oxygen.
OMG I love how you saved that fish from the things sucking on him
After removing the leaches you should have used them as bait! Payback for the fishes.
I play clash of clans
Why u guys racist against leeches?
They’re lampreys
True
They just gonna get the leaches again smh
You have gained a subscriber
What a man! Just casually catching his bait as he strolls up lmao
Thanks man!
Man those lampreys make the skin crawl lol. Ive caught a few bass and crappie with one of those things attached. Never seen 2 on one fish before. Good job removing them that poor spot wouldn't have made it for long with 2 of those blood suckers on it.
Lampreys are vicious little things.
The bass swam away happy!
I hope you killed those lampreys
Hopefully you reported the lampreys to your DNR
We in germany also have lanpreys and we call it 9 eyes because of the gill holes
mr. farrtze what’s DNR?
It's so fun to see young people appreciating every fish they catch. As an old timer, most of my buddies will kill every drum they catch for no good reason other than "wasting" time they could be catching walleye. I've always found drum to be fun to catch, especially one GIANT I caught on a fly rod, and if the water is relatively clear and less than about 60 degrees they are actually good to eat.
Cheers!
I heard drum are good eating. I personally have not tried it.
I got tricked into trying it the first time by a buddy who told me they were white bass. We soak the fillets in milk with a pinch of salt for about an hour and then deep fry them and they are better than white bass if not quite up to the standards of walleye or perch.
Fillet that drum and put it on the grill ,with lemon and butter and a lift garlic ,very tasty
Bake in the oven with foil.
Why would anyone eat a Freshwater Drum?
@@jacobstarr9010 Because they taste good
My grandpa caught a 70 lb flathead out of a Creek in Kansas. by Creek I mean you can jump over it at some spots. He caught it in a hole that was about the size of a standard backyard in ground pool. Apparently that Creek and its many hidden pockets produced a lot of 40+ lb cats.
Wow, that's awesome!
What part of kansas?
Mike Collins, just outside of larned Kansas and also around Pawnee rock Kansas. There are deep sand pits that are filled with water and the creeks connect to the sand pits it’s cool, very unique fishing terrain.
jacob carolan thanks man, might fish there
Those spots are vert cool indeed
Awesome! Yeah those drums hit like a Freight train, take off like a speed boat and fight like an SOB!
Yep, they fight like the devil!
Chatt Cats Fishing yes they do!
Jeff Jackson can you eat drums?
Jeff Jackson No they don't. Lol. Drum give up after about 10 seconds of fighting. Drum are garbage. I can't believe I wasted my time watching this dude catch drum... Psh
+WhiteBoiGotti I can't believe you asked that I'm only 14 and I even know you can
Wow hit a very sweet spot some people go fishing all day and don't catch a fish and he's catching all kinds of fish back to back I love it
Fishing in the creeks gets good when it's high and muddy
Good job helping out that bass.
I gotta say man, I'm loving the camo crocs
2:35 thank me later 😉
Bless u

I don’t need to thank you
Thx
8:45 Thank ME later ;)
Phil, your gonna have to help me up.
Hey Phil this one big brother your gonna have to help me up. Lol good video bro!
Haha.
Thanks for watching!
I love to see bigger fish returned to the water. They are breed stock, the future of the water.
Thanks for watching!
Wow. Pure awesomness. Drum is actually not a bad eat. I tried some 2 pounders one and there was not a thing wrong with them, lighter meat than catfish. There is not a single drum like this in all of Illinois!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed! I've never eaten freshwater drum. I need to try it.
Fishing flooded creeks are awesome!!!!!
I agree! Very fun to fish in!
Some of my best channel cat days have been on our local river fishing in 1 to 3 feet of water on a secluded flooded flat.
Those are some huge fish! Good job! Also couldn't help but notice the spinning reel on that casting rod.
Thanks man! Haha, yeah, I accidentally bought the wrong rod...haha. I meant to get the spinning rod but got the baitcaster rod. Not that big of a deal, though. Thanks for watching!
Good Vid,I'm jealous, any day of fishing is still better than work.
Thanks for watching!
That is definitely something someone stoned would say, talking to the fish-- "you're gonna get a concussion maan" made me lol. Good vid
LOL.
I live near chatt myself. I like fishing around Soddy Daisy area. lots of good fishn holes all around chattanooga area though. keep on fishn !
Thanks for watching! We are blessed for sure with all the great fish we have.
No dought bro,I'm from Tuscaloosa Al,me and some close friends done alot of work around that creek down from the battlefield and yes very big drum there ...pretty country....thanks
Thanks for watching!
Up north in Lake Erie the drum are called Sheep Head in Texas they are Gasper goo many call them white drum. Always kill the lampreys.
YES, always KILL the lampreys.
Always got to love those drum, they fight so hard!
Yep!
Freshwater drum seem to be less aggressive than saltwater cause down here in Texas they pull drag like red drum. Great vid
Thanks for watching!
It appears that it’s cold out so the water temp is probably cold. Drum are not going to put up much of a fight if the temp is cool/cold. But if the water is warm they will run hard.
The bossthree
Oh my god that drum is large. I’ve learned something today, never knew they had freshwater drums. Lived in Sarasota Florida for a while and never caught them that large. Good job!
Channels like yours is why i killed my tv and started watching UA-cam!
Thanks for the amazing video.
EDIT: I have the same Crocks! Love 'em.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it!
Here in Ohio you would get a Ohio fish award for drum of that size, great vid and tight lines
Cool. I've got a few trophy freshwater drum awards here in Tennessee.
Yeah and that's just a creek
Truly enjoyed seeing some drum caught, any bite is s good bite ...
This makes me wanna go fishing now..

Your videos are very entertaining and I think your underrated
I appreciate that!
Those may just be the biggest Drums I've seen in my life
I really enjoyed this vid man it brought back memories!
Thanks for watching!
drum is good to eat.season salt lemon on the grill smoke yes.
Yes I bet! I’ve never tried it but sounds yummy!
Great video. I’ve been catching some eater sized fish. 2 to 6 pounds in shallow water but can’t catch shad in less than 15 or so feet? Where are the shad? Are they with the blue catfish and I’m just not catching them?
Shad can be VERY hard to find at times. In flood conditions they tend to congregate in slack water. I do best getting shad below the dam in the early morning before sunrise.
"Your gonna get a concussion man!"🤣🤣🤣
Lol.
Aye! Tennessee fisherman, I like it. Representing it well man! Keep it up
Thanks for watching!
Circle hooks can not be beat!!! I've never caught a Drum, but they look like they fight amazingly!! I'm going to have to come up your way one day and catch a few!!!
They are fun to catch.
Where I go fishing, the fish don't get that big, unfortunately for me, I'm still grateful im able to go fishing though👍👍
Fishing is therapy! I enjoy catching all fish. Getting the big one is always a bonus!
Thanks for watching!
"Ur gonna get a concussion man!!" Lol, this channel is great...

The Best part for me, when your friend, said,, stop heating your head you gone get a contusion😅😅😅
Lol.
I had someone ask me how to attach a castnet to the fishing rod they thought that you actually cast it with your fishing rod lol I almost laughed in his face but I didn’t I just showed him how to use it😂🤣
Haha. Glad you showed him how to use it. Good man!
c'est la vie sounds like it would just be useless info for you, Tex.
i didnt even know drum could live in freshwater til now lol
nice catch!
There is a difference between the saltwater and freshwater drum. The freshwater drum are also known as sheephead or gaspergoo

Fishes! I love fish 😊 and fishing is really interesting to me, I've only ever fished with a handline. I'ma peep more videos of yours.
Thanks for stopping by. I've never handline fished before. That would be cool to do some time.
How do you forget your net? It could cost you when you get that once in a life time fish hooked and then you lose it right by shore...
Brian James been there done that lol

Catch and release, love it!

Awesome video and holy cow!! Those were big drums!!!
Thanks man!
"You gon get a concussion man."
😂😂😂
Lol.
Aaron Shattuck hahahah so funny u want a cookie
What a fish! Great job wrangling that beast in
Those are leaches, put some salt on them to make them let go, then kill them, they are killing that fish.
Ruben Galvan That's a lamprey not a leech.
Sorry, I thought Lampreys were only Salt water, I have never seen one, only leaches.
Pull them off and put on the hook. Leeches and small lamprey are great bait
I was thinking that but what do I know? I'm a steel header out here in Washington state. Hey, are the drum worth eating? I have no idea so don't laugh too hard. You said "trophy" in the vid. What, about 12 pounds? maybe 14? Hard to tell from the vid but it looked awesome.
david beckenbaugh if you like oily fish drum is for you! If your like more lean fish stay away
Me * watches video *
Also me * " fine!! Im going fishing in the morning "
Awesome catches !!

Thanks for watching!
Dude just take the lid off ur bait bucket n dump them inside u don't need to pick them up plus they might live longer
Good point!
Chatt Cats Fishing rock salt added to you the water stops their scales from coming off... it will keep them alive... found that out from an older gentleman who uses it here in Kansas to keep them alive while transport from one part of the river to another to catch flathead & blues... hope it helps... don't use a lot..
I was thinking the same like why did u pick em up single handed lol
Oh yeah creeks can be great. We caught some 30's and 40's in the creek last fall/winter...Blue cat that is...Those are some great big old drum...Wow..
Thanks, Mike! Creek fishing has it's time and place for sure.
Dump your bait into the bucket you won’t have to touch them they will stay alive along time.
Thanks for the tip, Nathan!
I thought you forgot the net i seen one towards the end of video when u said ima get this stuff out the way.lol great video man
My buddy went back to the house to get a net after the first fish we got. He came back with it, and I was like, yeah that's too small of a net. Haha. Thanks for watching!
Planning on taking my son kayak fishing on the south chick creek Sat hopefully we will have that kind of luck. I think he would have a complete fit if he caught a fish that big.
Hope you guys have a great time. Good luck!
Calm down your gonna get a concussion man lol
That was a funny moment, haha.
That was awesome! Love getting into them like that! Fun fish to catch! Great video!👍
Thanks for watching!
Where I come from we call them sheephead
Which state are you in? I'm from south dakota and that's what we call them up here.
Loved the video. I've caught a couple of drums and even the smaller ones fight good.
Thanks for watching!
Yep, they fight good, especially on light tackle.
We call that a sheaphead in michigan
Ken Mackay Down south we call em gaspergoos
Im in south alabama redfish saltwater black drum fresh.. same kind of fish just dif subspecies
The sheephead i know of are saltwater silver and black stripes fun fish to catch
i’m from pa we call em sheephead too
Lol I said sheepshead
Well done guys! Congrats! I really enjoyed watching this shirt video... 👍👍👍👏

Damn He Should Have Not Released it.
He Should Have Ate It
Black drums generally have worn inside of them so about 98% of the time you'll bite into a group of worms
Noah Gilman bruh
Is this guy Spiderman? lovely voice and nice vids dude
Haha.

Great vid man
Thanks for watching!
Glad you caught some shad on that first throw. Normally I throw in some bread to attract them to get a good amount of them. That is a great fish. Congrats.
Thanks, Seth!
No problem. I just got to my lake house today. Started using topwater frog lures. I got one strike, but no cigar. Lol. Hopefully I'll have better luck tomorrow even though it might rain all day, but hey rain makes fishing better.
Cool
Woohoo been waiting in the new videos man. Those drums looked fun
It was a blast!
I was homeless for a year once..catching a drum when starving is like Tom starting a fire in castaway. What a victory!
I heard drum were good eating.

Nice video bro! Really enjoyed it. Nice trophy size drum and bonus bass!
Thanks! It was a good day!
Very nice freshwater drum! Fun to catch and also a very good channel cat bait. Well the smaller ones anyways. Big ones like those get released every time.
Thanks for watching! I've heard other people say that drum make good catfish bait too. I'll have to give that a try some time.
Chatt Cats Fishing I've had good success with em. They are tough to filet but with it.
We catch salt water drum down here on the coast of Texas. They are called that because when you catch them they make a drumming noise from the inside. Sheephead are completely different breed with short flat rows of teeth to eat crustaceans etc and has dark black stripes
Interesting.
Thanks for watching! Tight lines!
That’s cool that you saved the fish man and got those leech looking things off.
They are Lampern they can grow to 16 inches long, they are fresh water of the same family as Lampreys, they look the same, only thing different between them is Lampreys are salt water and don't live in fresh water they enter the edge of fresh water right where its brackish to fresh and will spawn only, Lamperns will die in salt water
Most of the great lakes have massive drums. Lake Michigan in particular, they run in massive schools, super fun to catch on spoons off the pier heads in New Buffalo. Never ate them though!
Andrew Hankins their not worth the trouble to clean. their a fun catch though
Such nice big fish. Why are you letting them go?
I typically release all fish I catch. It's more of a hobby for me.
Great fish man and awesome what you did for that bass so he can live longer and get bigger

Small drum are good eats but large ones like those are typically full of worms down here in the south. They are hella fun to catch.
They fight like the devil at first. They are more fun to catch on light tackle!
