This is the How To Install and Feature video on the Tom Wood's Custom Driveshafts that went under the Autoedit Jeep Wrangler Rubicon JKU. ***Don't forget to watch the end of the video for the code words to get a 10% Discount off of your order! Offer good for six months after this video is posted and on JK driveshafts only.
It is a fairly straight forward installation and can be done in your driveway with a few specific tools you will see used in the video.
While they can generally supply a good fitting drive shaft by application information only, the best fitment is usually obtained by providing a reference measurement for the length. This can easily be done with the stock drive shafts in place and should only take less than a minute’s time to do so. It's kind of like buying a suit... One off the rack may fit OK, but if a tailor made suit costs the same, why not get it tailor made? Second to that, every lift kit... let's say 3.5” in this case... does not necessarily net 3.5” of lift. This Jeep saw an actual lift of 4" after the install.
In addition to that, there are stack tolerances as the vehicle goes down the assembly line. For example; if the engine, transmission and transfer case happen to mount ¼” forward of nominal and the rear differential mounts ¼” rearward of nominal, you have the potential of ½" difference in the length of the drive shaft.
The Tom Wood's Custom Driveshafts kits for the JK are shipped complete with everything needed for installation (except effort and time). This includes all the nuts & bolts, thread locking compound and even the tool needed to grease the center pivot point on the CV assembly.
They took the time to get the information needed to get me the right drive shaft for my particular tire diameter, differential gear ratio and intended use, as opposed to the “this one off the shelf will work” approach that many other manufacturers use.
I opted for the polish & clear coat finish, for appearance. This added a $25.00/ per drive shaft but they really look amazing. It's a shame they get hidden after the install!
I also selected the 1350 series U Joints for the added strength. The cost differential between the 1350 & the 1310 series is only $160.00 / per drive shaft and Tom himself mentioned... would I rather not risk breaking down, rather than breaking down with $160.00 in my pocket.
I couldn't believe how fast they made and shipped these things. You order one day, and they ship the next.
Check this out:
They have a Gold Seal warranty.
www.4xshaft.com...
If you ever break the universal joint, they also cover the damage to the drive shaft. Of course too, if you happen to want different universal joints in the drive shaft, they can do that too, as they are an authorized warehouse distributor for both Spicer and Neapco.
Thanks for watching!

Awesome videos. Love the detailed step by step DIY vids. They really are top notch and best Ive seen on youtube! I always go to your channel first to see if you have a video already on the required subject. Keep them coming!!
I'm a simple man; I see a new AutoEdit video, I slap the like button.
And that is why I so enjoy putting these videos up... You Rule! Thanks!
autoedit I am surprised that you don't have an oil pan skid plate.
I'm a simple man. I see a Jk without a wayalife decal, I hit the like button.
LOL! Seriously, I LOL'd for real!
Love the videos bud! Keep em coming.
Best quote ever: "Remember..take care of your stuff.."
Also, your dog is awesome, more footage of the pupper!
As he throws his torque wrenches in the ground.
The JK is turning out awesome! Good thing it's a Jeep and you'll never really run out of stuff to modify! Keep up the awesome videos!
Thanks for posting this it saved me from Advance auto selling me a CV kit for the front drive shaft $189.00 bucks for just one and then most likely replacing the rear CV kit soon.
Thanks for the comment! I believe this is a really solid upgrade that has been great for several years now.
the little bit of fred from dirty every day explains a lot lol. great video as always can't believe I found the first video you posted way back when and now you're huge
LOL! Thanks, I don't think anything about this operation is huge... YET but thanks again!
Hey hey. Just thought I'd say thanks for the video! I've been waffling on this upgrade vs other things, so with the "Pinto" discount it was a no-brainer to go ahead. I called Tom Woods Monday morning and here it is Tuesday afternoon and my driveshaft will be here in time for installation next weekend.
Wow! That's so awesome... thanks for sharing!!! oh, and watching!!!
The jeep has came a long way, badass!
Yeah Buddy!
Your viseos and products you put in the JK just rule man..i have learned tons..keep em coming great work
I'll do my best to keep them coming! Thanks so much for the encouragement!
Just Ordered My Front and Rear Driveshafts from Tom Woods, Thanks for sharing Auto. Discount is not going to be around much longer, so buy asap if anyone is interested!
Just ordered my Tom Wood's drive shafts. Looking forward to the install. Great vid!!
Hope you enjoy it!
@@AutoEdits Regearing at the same time. 4.88's here I come!!
never thought I'd like the look of a drive shaft so much, damn those are gorgeous!
I really was impressed with the look of them as well.
Jason, you shouldn't toss your torque wrenchs down on the ground like that...tisk tisk....haha, really enjoy you videos!
I seriously just cringed when I saw that...
I literally just jaw dropped when he tossed it 🤦🏽♂️
And pinto the dog sent me lol! I just started watching this series and I'm loving everything being done to your jk. I'm new to the jk world, and I can say, the cool-aid tastes pretty good. Can't wait to get my first unlimited and make it my own.
Thanks so much and I hope you enjoy your Jeep as much as I do this one!
i have been binge watching all of this series, you should really have a show on MotorTrend.
Tom Woods apart from offering great products they also have excellent costumer service. "My shaft is a woody." as they graciously printed in the stickers they send with the orders. I wonder how the polished and clear coat finish will hold, mine are all blacks. Thumbs up bro!
Yes, they are a great shop to work with... couldn't believe how fast they sent them and how well built they are.
Bought a lfited jk a few months back. had some adams double cardon derive shafts new in box with it. Took it to the beach a few months back and the front shaft started acting up. Sure enough the boot was almost non existant after a few days cruising the dunes. Luckily the sand was pretty packed so i was able to continue the trip in 2 hi. Just waiting on my metal cloak control arms to turn up and will be installing my drive shafts.
Awesome!
Excellent Video. Your camera angles and explanations are great and I find them very helpful. I had aftermarket drive shafts put on my jeep and they resulted in a lot of vibration. I am going to try again with the Tom Woods products and do it myself this time with the help of your video. thanks again.
That's great to hear... don't forget to mention Pinto the Dog for the discount!!!
You will be happy with them for sure.
Looked like your pneumatic air tool went over the torque setting in the first place. Love the Jeep 🤘
New comment to an old vid. 😁
Looks like I have some vibration in the shafts now! Glad I stumbled back on this video. Gonna have some fun removing and testing out to see which shaft is my vibration culprit!
Thanks!
I would inspect it for damage and lube all the fittings and drive again to see.
Really love your jk build. A lot of jks are the same and boring but yours is a true trail beast
Again an excellence video. I didn't know of Tom woods drive shafts before I purchased the Adams drives shafts out of Vegas for my JK 2 door. Both looks to be very good units. Thanks for posting. I can't wait to see the Moab video.
Tom Woods, Adams and JE Reel are the top three in the industry for sure!
This video talked me into the drive shafts.
Glad to hear it... you'll be happy... I'm still running them... going strong!
Another great video! A few questions if you have some time:
1) what large size sockets are needed for this?
2) What size two jaw puller did you use?
3) it looks like Tom Woods is using a yoke/flange combo these days front and rear....do you have double flanges in the rear end a yoke and flange combo in the front?
Thanks again! Just about to go down this path. Enjoy your WABDR trip! I did five of those last year. Great routes.
Another great video. Yeah great... one more thing I need to do to my jeep. I'm going to need a longer piece of cardboard.
Thanks for the info! Keep the videos coming.
Awesome boots. I wear the same pair for work everyday. Byfar the best boots I've ever worn. Im on my 3rd pair, they seem to last me 1 1/2- 2 years. greats videos also
Cool!
Hey Jason - The Pinto discount expired (2 years after Duh!) Anyway, I've just placed an order for my front 1350 and John at Tom Wood's custom shafts is sending me some goodies to make up for some of the discount. Thanks for the video, I am glad you're still doing this stuff.
seeing so many problems there at hells gate made my nervous when i saw you stop your momentum and that tire got airborne....
Man that is such a gnarly obstacle
I subscribed to you for the mustang and now i watch for the jeep, i have a 2door jk. Awesome videos dude.
Awesome to hear... thank you!
your not a man until you wheel lift your 4WD, love the jeep keep up the great work.
LOL! Thanks so much!
Im now all up to date with the Build Videos.
Thank you, from the cold and wet UK.
Nice video man, I love that you got out and used it now. I also use the same drive shafts in my Hummer. They work great just make sure you keep up with greasing them now.
Thanks for the reminder! I did forget to mention that they recommend that at about every oil change to lube the joints
You had me guessing what upgrade you would do next. Sweet upgrade!
Love the Jeep and the Mustang! Keep the fantastic videos coming, you have given me so many great ideas and fantastic advice for when I build my JK!
Awesome to hear, thanks so much!
Had to go back and watch this video need to get a drive shaft for my ram. Great job on all your videos keep up the great work.
Hey, I'm thinking about updated the ones on my Ram too... let me see what I can work up!
That will be awesome, I was also looking into the hub locker kit for the ram. What do you think about doing hub conversation.
Never even heard of that for the 1500 Ram, I'll check it out... who makes it?
therammaninc.com/products/shop_list/Locking-Hub-Conversion-Kits-479
I tried to add a photo but I couldn't.
Please let me know what you think
That is very cool! I don't think I'm going this way because of my RCV axles but it's cool... thanks for the share.
I hope there is more Moab video coming soon! Nice review on the driveshafts.
I would like to put something together on Easter Jeep Safari but work will have me pretty busy this week so we'll see.
hopefully i can get around to putting this much work into my jeep. amazing and your videos would help a lot with installs. thank you.
If it's lifted at all you will eventually be doing this I guarantee it. Mine is only 3" and the oem cv joint failed.
Hell's gate looks butt clenching! Had that almost happen to me in the mountains of NC in my TJ! Keep at it! Love the Mustang build as well.
Thanks! Yes, it was all new experiences for me but I feel more confident now!
I ordered my Tom Wood's shafts today!!!!
Heck yeah!
Damn that was a lot easier of an install than I thought it would be. Tom Woods are gonna be the new ones, but I won't get them until I go with my Metal Cloak long arm kit first. Great job dude. They look sick! Also I am jealous as hell you went to EJS, I had been planning to for the last 6 months and missed it because I threw out my back. On my bucket list.
Thanks! Sorry to hear about you getting hurt but yes EJS is a must... I hope to go again for sure. Plus I actually learned a ton about wheeling that week with my buddy Fred.
Great video. Been watching your build since you installed the tires. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great videos..... I tried using the Pinto discount when I ordered a new drive shaft today........... sadly, the promotion is only for JK's Grrrrr... I have a TJ Rubicon... oh well I still bought it... LOL... Looking forward to more of your videos.
great vid. needs more frisbee throwing! also tell your dog thanks for discount!
haha, gently persuade the old shafts out! I've had to remove mine a bunch of times, I lol'd pretty hard at that =) Love the vids man, keep it up.
Jeep is coming along real nice
Thanks!
Loving all the Informative Jeep videos. Keep it up Jason! Always looking forward to your work.
As always great video glad to see your rig becoming what it is
Those driveshafts look great!
Thanks, yes...good parts!
autoedit keep up the great videos and if you have the chance check out my channel
I just finished the JKU Project. What an OUTSTANDING build sir. Liked and subbed. That said, I plan on getting a JKU within 6 months and was wondering if a newb, like myself, could tackle some of these projects. I was wondering if in the description you could put a level of ease gauge. Example: Novice - Intermediate and fuhgeddaboudit. Maybe the tools needed for the project. Great videos, keep up the great work you are doing for the Jeep Newb Community. Thank you sir +autoedit
Look great. Why isn’t there a dust boot on the slip joint? Thank you
They found the internal seals on these work very good... no need to have a boot.
Really helpful video. Thanks Jason.
Glad to hear!
Love the vids. Keep giving me ideas on what to do to my jeep. Just installed the same front and rear bumpers and looks awesome.
Once again very cool video and very informative !! Thanks
Well, thank you!
I like the sound of your exhaust, I saw that video install. It appears its rusting bad or is that a bad camera angle. Great choice for drive shafts they are on my upgrade list!!!
None of the new stuff has rusted yet but the stock section has a fair bit of surface rust on it. I do highly recommend the Tom Woods shop!
Great Looking wheels.
Thanks 👍
Nice Jeep! It's came a long way. Love your vids dude keep it up! Also what happen to the dodge truck you picked up a few vids back?
Thanks! The Dodge is still sitting broken in the driveway... it has to wait it's turn in the line of stuff to do around here and work has me running too much lately.
Good stuff looking into these now
Jason I must say your Jeep is looking amazing your work is immaculate and if your ever in Canada my friend come visit with pinto😁🐶
yes a new video! I love these!
Woo hoo!
Engine mods and off road lighting must be next!
Yes, but first I want to get the engine and transmission mounted in my Mustang project.
Great video as usual. When you are talking about the ‘carding joints’….I know that allows obviously more articulation with less stress…..is that what they mean by adjust the ‘caster’ angle?
Awesome vid man! Such a dope jeep!
I love the jeep, man, don't get me wrong, but when are we gonna see more large marge vids?
I'm looking forward to seeing her finished
Soon I hope
Replace that pantystar with a 5.7L hemi ;), or a diesel to get some “real” torque. All those upgrades no stress on factory trans and Xfer case ? The new 3.0L option has a upgraded trans from the 3.6 and 2.0 engine options. It would be great if Jeep, well Fiat, gave us a V8 option, even the small 8 4.7L they had in the Commander, I’m sure they can get mid 3’s in both HP and Torque.
Hell yeah buddy! Nice upgrade
Thanks so much!
you did amazing job BRO.
Thanks dude!
Great video. Love your videos. Got a little tippy on Hell’s Gate!!!
Why yes I did... might have peed my pants a little on that one... LOL
Pretty dope dude keep up the good work
Right on, Thanks!
Hey Jason.
I’m looking to order a front drive shaft from Tom Woods. I’m running MC GC 3.5” on JKUR same as you.
My measurement is 36.5” which they say is almost an inch short of their normal measurement that they would get for that lift.
I know things can vary due to arm lengths.
I’ve measured it 5 times and followed their exact instructions.
I'll get out and look at mine tomorrow and see what mine is.
Ww have the same jeep and the same fenders haha . Crazy awsome videos .
Good taste in Jeeps! Thanks for being here!
Jason, did you ever have to adjust your pinion angle from the default metalcloak 3.5 control arm settings for the Tom Woods front shaft? I’m installing mine soon, will measure for the driveshaft once the suspension is done. Thanks! Great to be able to go back to your older vids for reference!
Yes, I set my pinion angle in the rear to match the output of the transmission and the front angle is set on whatever it took to get my caster to -5.5
JUST INSTALLED THE 1350s IN MY 2010 RUBI / 20"rims ON 37" NITTOs..........SMOOTH AS SILK BEEFY TO THE MAX ........
Glad to hear that!
I'm watching you from Iraq 🇮🇶🥰💋
Howdy!
I'm well. How are you? 💋🥰
Great video been watching for awhile
No lie, as I'm scrolling down through my subscriptions, I totally thought when I glanced at the thumbnail it about light sabers before I looked at the description.
Well, a light saber upgrade to the jeep would be pretty awesome! Should I change the thumbnail?
No not at all, I surprised myself by my own ADD. Awesome channel, can't wait to see what you do with the Mustang.
Should extension on your torque wrench rather than a universal when plausible , reason being you get more of a precise torque reading. Also should recheck after test drive.
Very good points and true! There's a little wiggle room on this because of the loctite and billet steel mounting plates.
You make GREAT videos.
I have a tom woods on my JK, its been awesome! Although mine came painted. Its actually a shame that stock CV angle isnt very good, as its actually much stronger than a u-joint. Although the stock shaft itself is thin junk, and they twist easy.
Yeah, it's a confidence and peace of mind thing for sure... this setup is better all the way around than the stock stuff.
Thanks a lot for the install video! I'm trying to figure out if I need these. 2.5" game changer lift with 37s. The jeep currently runs and drives excellent on and off road. Thoughts?
Nice work!
Be kinda cool to link to the tools you use.
So what sold you on the Tom Woods driveshafts verses another like JE Reel or whatever. I've also looked at the Tom Woods, I'm just curious. Keep the videos coming, love what you are doing with your Jeep
I was surprised that at the slip joint area (blue area) that you didn't have some sort of boot. Maybe you did this just for show but I am thinking that dirt and crud would get on the area making slippage progressively more and more difficult. Also, you didn't order two shaft sets in the event it broke during a competition. Is it that good that you feel a spare is not needed?
I think for the level of off roading I do, a single set will last longer than many other components on the drivetrain. Not sure about a boot for that section, let's see how it holds up.
I seriously recomend putting a boot there and some moly grease on anything you see having contact. Its either stainless or chrome covered, it gets scratched easily, and make noise, even tough it will never break. For hearing comfort only :)
So it’s been a while... do you think you need a boot on there or has it held up well?
Man that was a great video thanks for that!
You really are doing that rig the right way. So what did you end up doing about the exhaust spacers? I have the same spacers in place. Would I be able to remove them with these with the addition of these drive shafts?
Yes, the spacers are coming off... no need for them with the new drive shafts.
Replaced driveshaft and have a hum in the front, is there a crush seal that should have been replaced? That's all the forms I've read just asking for input
Glad you came to Utah! How was offroading in Moab?
The best!!!
Personal Opinion: @7:17 I would stray from using swivel attachments on torque wrenches. Just like our Jeeps, different drive-line angles produce varying forces (stress). We don't have to get crazy though, this isn't a space shuttle. This still remains on the border of being "fair enough" for this application.
Solid suggestion. It was a balance of close enough and couldn't really reach the nut without it.
Awesome! Didn't realize you did this video. I have a good amount of leakage in my front driveshaft seal. I bought the replacement seal, but didn't think to ask if there is a different sized seal I need, or if they are universal, regardless of lift or gear size.
Can you answer that one for me? I'm gonna do the job next week. Thanks!
PS... at 09:35 I've seen plenty of roll overs with what you did right there... suuuuper lucky! And ballsy!
You should do led headlights, led taillights, and metal hood latches.
Awesome video! I'm looking into ordering these next week. Any chance Pinto discount is still available? 😂
Keep the vids coming!
I think it is... give them a call!
Hi Jason, love your videos! I just put an Adams driveshaft front 1310 in mine Jeep after the 3.5” metalcloak lift. I’m running about 5* of caster and 1* pinion angle. What are you running and have you had any issues?
In the process of doing this myself. Did you place the jack stands under the axel tubes? For some reason the internet said use the frame to get full droop, but I couldn’t get the wheels off the ground that way. I trust your advice way more than google haha.
I can’t see any reason to go full droop for this install. This went great 👍
AutoEdits that makes me happy to hear. Always look forward to your videos.
No pinion angle adj?? Stock CV to a double cardon.. super important.
Keep on Jeepin' on!
You changed the wheels! must have missed that video! Better backspacing?
Yes during the Power Stop Brake install... I'll do another little feature on them and yes the backspacing is perfect for this setup... 4.5" and like it.
Wow awesome video! I wanted to ask you I have a question I have been thinking of building a custom lift kit. I currently have pro comp shocks that are for a 4 in lift and I have 2 in coil spacers on my stock coil springs. I saw a guy the other day and he had a 3.5 lift kit with 2in spacers and said drive quality was good now I don't know how true that was but I was thinking of kind of doing the same thing but instead doing a control arm bracket as well as caster and Pinon angle brackets to accommodate for the extra 2in spacers and then also getting a better drive shaft to accommodate as well later on. Do you think that would work? the only reason is because I'm trying to find the cheapest most effective way without making something else more expensive break to my jeep jk unlimited. I am really trying lift my vehicle 5-6in I know I'm crazy but I just really like that look and I'll be honest I'm that guy that is a mall Crawler haha so clearance is not important to me I just don't want to break anything with doing a custom lift kit and body spacers look weird to me so that's not an option for me haha
Nice mods on the Jeep, but we need more Mustang vids That's coming from a Camaro guy LOL.
I agree and it is in the works... now to just find time around my dang work schedule.
Got a quick question regarding your rig. Since you lifted your jeep and slapped on bigger tires did you have to re-gear your rig? What gear is recommended for 3.5" lift running 35's on a JKU? And was the upgraded drive shafts necessary or just an upgrade that gives you piece of mind?? Thanks again
Another great video. When are you going to put armor under your Jeep?
Thanks, armor is on the short list!
