This, and the Roman Szmal series were the ones that prompted me to become a patron! These are so educational and valuable, in terms of choosing various paint brands and colors.

YAY! It's season 3 time! This is def one of my fav series. It's so useful and interesting to see how the same pigment or color name vary across brands before buying a new color. This episode is a great example, I would have been so disappointed if I ordered the permanent sap green expecting it to be as dark as the online image. Thanks to the patrons and the Queen of the pigment nerds for continuing this series!

Perylene Green's been a color I've just yearned after for a long time but I can't bring myself to get one knowing that it's (supposedly) a color that doesn't play well with scanners and would require a lot of touching up digitally... It's such a shame because it's SUCH a beautiful color 😭💚

This will be a fun series! 😄. I have Daniel Smith and it is much darker than you have in your video. I don’t know if you watered down the paint or what but Daniel Smiths is not that light. I also don’t think gouache should be included in this comparison. Gouache is not watercolor. It was fun to see the cost of the paints in different countries. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. Maybe you need to test them on 100% cotton paper and cheap paper too. You would be showing two different results to two different audiences. 👍 It would be fun to see!

My tube of Daniel Smith perylene green looks very much like her swatch. It’s the least pigmented DS tube I own. Maybe different batches just come out that way.

I'm surprised at your swatch of Daniel Smith Perylene Green. Mine is as dark as the Mission Gold sample. I do have it in the Roman Szmal, also, which I really like. Congratulations on Season 3!

Oto….. I would dearly LOVE to see you do a series on mixing your own convenience colors. I think it could be so valuable to those of us who, for whatever reason, would rather mix our own secondaries. I sat down this morning and in my first try I came up with perfect dupes for both Perylene Green and Red. I made the green with Pthalo Green YS and Sepia, and the red with Pyrrol Crimson (264) and Neutral Tint (MGraham). I actually find it ‘more convenient’ and certainly cheaper, to just mix from my studio palette that’s right there in front of me, rather than dig out a seldom used tube of paint from my stash.

Very happy to see that you are going to test on cotton paper. As one who uses cotton paper exclusively (and I suspect most of your followers do) I have always thought that was a missing component of your videos. As we know, paint performance varies greatly between cotton paper and cellulose paper and I could not rely on your videos for that information. Look forward to the addition of cotton paper videos.

I have a Special Edition 12 color set of Schmincke half pan wc. Recently, I finally gave this set a good workout and the Perylene Green, unexpectedly, turned out to be my fave. At first, I thought, “ugh.” But then I saw it’s beauty and usefulness in shading, of course, but it’s not just a dark green…it has more personality than that. Thanks for this helpful comparison.

I’m so happy to see this, thank you for such a comprehensive overview of such a complex color 🤗. It’s one of those colors I could take or leave depending on the day, tho RS and DV are in my stash (and maybe Lukas). If it leans viridian’ish (to me) I don’t care for it, so the balance of PBk11’s depth of color vs it just looking super dark yet still retain its “green” is delicate.
I use the same Fabriano paper for swatching. It’s 25% cotton and 140lbs and is just a little bit more $ than say Strathmore, here in the US, especially when on sale, tho I’ve gotten loose 100 packs from Jackson’s at a ridiculous price. There’s a 90lb version as well which is very nice. I don’t use Bockingford but enjoyed seeing the small swatch. One paper I love that’s difficult to find here is Canson’s Moulin de Roy. Bee Paper is hit or miss availability. When you work consistently with a paper it works with you, and the pigments join the party, so you’ll develop the best techniques for whatever kind of paper you’re using. I keep hearing “Practice does the trick,” lol. When I meet “Practice” we’re going to have a conversation 😂😂😂
Very much looking forward to the next video! 🌺

None of the Sennelier paints (from tubes) have made bubbles on my paper. This is my go-to brand. I think I have 45 colors. I have Greenish Umber and have swatched for opacity, staining, and gradient on cotton paper (Bee Co.) and found it lovely.

This was really interesting to watch! So nice to see all those brands side by side. Would love to try the Da Vinci one, but it is impossible to buy it in Portugal. Besides Daniel Smith's and Roman Szmal's Perylene Greens I also have the ShinHan's Shadow Green (PBK31) which is also very nice.

hi, you are correct, but also what I said is also correct. I give the CI Common or Historical Name according to the artist creations paint database (www.artiscreation.com/black.html#.YpnAh-zMIVE) rather than what paint names people often see those pigments by. The name you brought up are correct as it is the names that PBk11 pigment are sold when in watercolor paint form.

Yaaas! That Permanent Sap Green is the ONLY paint I've ever oops-bought two tubes of! 😂 I had forgotten names but knew off the top of my head what my Jackson's paints *looked like* and surely the beautiful light green I had on hand was not this deep dark majestic beauty I must have clearly overlooked! Gahhh

omg YES and the first episode is about one of my most favorite colors PBk31 (well, perylene green) 💚
I have the holbein one and have been very happy with it, but I've been considering getting DS. However, looking at this comparison video, I'll stick with holbein. I've also been curious with sennelier's greenish umber but now I think I'll skip it too... Schmincke might be good to add in my collection one day, but I'll have to wait for a major sale.
Rembrandt dusk green's texture is 👌 I think I still have some pbk11 so I can mix it.
I don't know if I've commented on it before, but I want to thank you for using cheaper, cellulose paper. I'm still an amateur in watercolors and right now, all I can spare extra money for is cellulose paper/sketchbooks. Only reason I have cotton papers and sketchbook is people gifted them to me. Thank you so much for being considerate to beginners and casual painters like me.
That said, thanks for also adding cotton paper alongside cellulose paper 💛

Looks like the cheapest genuine PBk31 artist grade watercolor in the US is the Da Vinci, which is great since it looks good here. The W&N and Holbein look great, too. I like the hue of the W&N the best and the texture of the Roman Szmal is really nice. Thanks for this video, very helpful!

One error; PBk11 is oxide/lunar/mars black.(granulating often overwhelms; magnitite)
PBk6 is lamp black. (Smooth and muddy ; Carbon Black used often in inks)

I have Da Vinci, Schmincke, Roman Szmal and Holbein. I love my Holbein shadow green!! I’m very happy I have da Vinci & Holbein for this pigment, I wouldn’t buy it from Roman Szmal again, it disappoints me with it’s lack of depth. Schmincke is similarly lacking the super darkness I want, but it’s pretty good overall. I loveee the look of W&N best from all of your swatches. I almost want to add it to my collection!! 😬

*seems to me that MOST times daniel smith, winsor & newton, sometimes schmincke, and roman szmal are the GOOD performers, and most consistent.* (i like *da vinci* , especially certain paints, but overall doesn't seem to be one of the stronger performers). *holbein* is amazing at times, but then this 4 gradients test and others show a deep color that suddenly disappears, or in the tinting strength test. HOW does it go from a dark wash to being so weak??? it's so bizarre!
((would like to see A. Gallo on some of these to get a benchmark of them too.))
