Good job V stepping into a new photography field. This is a great series. I think you should bring Chelsea into your world and have her be a second on a wedding/engagement shoot (Tony can hold the light lol).
You both reinforced why I love wildlife photography. It's become my daytime 'thing to destress'. I was hoping to see Tony give a look during the video!
Vanessa!!! Great video! Thank you. I am 43 and have found so much peace in wildlife photography. It gets me out and hiking and noticing nature. “Serenity now!”
Shooting RAW on a 10D? Whew! ZERO chance at a decent frame rate. But you got some lovely compositions, and your technique trumped her better equipment. Way to go!
This one was cool I couldn’t wait to see the pictures . good to see you go out of your element and look how good she did . That’s why I love macro photography it’s so relaxing allows you to be creative and test your eye for photography just like bird photography you have to be patient.
Very impressed. You nailed it with a very old camera and lens against Chelsea with more modern kit (admittedly a less sharp lens) and she's an experienced wildlife photographer. Well done indeed.
Nice shoot. The wildlife was beautiful. The portrait version on the right is my favorite because the bird was looking at the photographer, making eye contact, almost posing.
Great video Vanessa. I like your series on it’s the photographer not the gear. But even the best run into challenges with gear. As photographers we have to self critique and get cc. I’ve been using a RP for wildlife photography including birds in flight! It’s challenging but I have taken many fantastic photos! It can be done.
Great series! Landscape photography I hope is next for you Vanessa! Would love to see you collab with a landscape photographer like maybe Nick Page or Mark Denney.
Great vid, shame about the wind noise. Good tip is to put your mic on the inside of your shirt. You can use a bit of gaff tape to hold it in place. Make it a bit of a wedge so that your shirt doesn't brush up against it. We used this technique to shoot a documentary.
10D again, Nice 👍. I just sold mine last week to MPB. Love it but wasn't getting used much anymore. Also, nice shots for being out of your element. It sure is nice being out there one in a while.
you should go against tony next!! :P always have and will love this series of yours, looking forward to future episodes starring many different guests!! love it!!!
That 400mm f5.6 lens has a great reputation I'd been considering getting a secondhand one. I don't plan pairing it with a 10D though (I do still have a 20 year old 20D, but it hasn't seen the light of day for a few years now).
Shooting wildlife looks fun, I will have to get off the basketball court and go into the wild some time. I'm going to pic yours over Chelsea's because it just a better photo. I like the cloud in the back, perfect.
Both were great shots but I prefer Vanessa's composition. I heard a saying once that went something like "every great photo ever taken was taken on a camera less advanced than the one you have now" I don't think it's really down to the gear, but the skills of the photographer as you've proved today.
@@VanessaJoy I like it because even though there's some fantastic cameras being released, I see a lot of people obsessed with having the best because they think it'll make them a better photographer. Your budget gear videos prove you can still get great photos with older and low price equipment as long as you have the skill.
Sweet! I'm watching this in 240p.. lol.. wow, that's a throw-down, a Canon 10d!! I have 2 10d's, got 'em both with grips and batteries for less than $75. One needed a repair (just some cleaning!).. if you get a chance, snag a 20d, MUCH FASTER camera, has the next rev of digic processor and an 8mp sensor!!! :) have fun, love these budget shoot videos!
Vanessa’s shot is interesting because with the cloud, there is kind of a natural vignetting effect with the blue sky around the edges. Key takeaways, wildlife photography is hard, and faster shutter speed never hurts. Because honestly, for a given lens I generally have no idea if it’s stabilized or not without searching the specs, which I’m unlikely to do every time I swap a lens.
Thanks Vanessa and Chelsea! I love taking wildlife pictures. I usually bring a camera with me when I go for my sunrise walk. I love your picture of the American Goldfinch the State Bird of New Jersey. In our yard I plant flowers to attract insects, hummingbirds, gold finches, and Cardinals. The goldfinches are partial to zinnias .
Lens over camera in the extreme. I still use the 400mm f5.6. Definitely useable with an R5 at f 6.3. Vanessa Joy, would become a wildlife convert with an R6 paired with the 400
Just got back from a week in your new home state doing wildlife photography along the gulf, you should give it another try down there sometime. I never thought that it would be hard to photograph a armadillo but they always have their face in the dirt and rarely look up at you but when they do they are so cute.
For a more relaxing & enjoyable wildlife experience I picked up the RF 100-400 to go with my R5 and am loving it. Lightweight & super sharp at all focal lengths
It’s always difficult to choose but I definitely like Vanessa’s composition but prefer Chelsea’s bird. In the end I’d probably opt for composition, so I’d have to choose Vanessa’s.
I actually have the tamron 150-600 Gen1 lens, Chelsea, was using, it's still 1 of my favorite lenses, it's being used with my recently purchased camera the Canon R6
Fortunately the Tamron 150-600mm G2 is a very different lens than the one Chelsea used. I frequently shoot wildlife wide open at 600mm and get fantastically sharp images. So, if one is inclined to buy a 150-600 be sure to get the newer G2 or one of the Sigmas, which are also newer designs.
This is tough one, I like following both you gals (Chelsea and Vanessa). I think Vanessa photo is better. I used to own a Nikon D7500, and I agree with Chelsea it was probably the lens. I am sad that Vanessa dislike Nikon, but that is okay it will not stop me from watching or following you.
Great video. I still have some older cameras like the Canon 40d, Pentax K10D, and Nikon d300s that continue to produce great photos. I am considering a Canon M50 Mark II and look forward to watching your review. Thanks
D7500 as a budget camera? 😂 That's the latest, top dog consumer APS-C DSLR body from Nikon. I expected at least a D90. 😝 Vanessa kept it real, ha-ha...too real with that 10D...but impressively still managed to get tack sharp shots. Wildlife is Chelsea's thing, but Vanessa's shots IMO spoke more to me. EDIT: 3:55 Chelsea's self-roast 😭
Fun video. I get a kick out of these videos because I shoot professionally with budget gear every day. I have two Canon SL2s with a Canon EF 50 1.8 and a Canon EF-S 24 2.8 However, I use my plastic $20 Holga and $50 Diana lenses a lot lately. Now that’s budget 😃
Going into the challenge, I think that Chelsea had an unfair advantage with a camera the was newer and better and with her experience and comfort shooting wildlife.
You girls have confused me as the video clearly shows that Vanessa used the Canon 400mm f/5.6 L USM Non IS lens but in the description the Canon EF70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM is linked, which may I quickly say is already in my bag. Did I miss something?
9:05 I have a Tamron 200-500mm, which is probably way cheaper than Chelsea's 150-600 lens (and possibly the cheapest super telephoto lens) and I have the same exact problem when shooting wide open (f/6.3) at 500mm. Pictures are soft. I experimented with different apertures, and I figured that I could get decently sharp images at f/11. Anyway, I am thrilled seeing Vanessa Joy doing bird photography.
Great video, erasure the best statement that the photographer is more important then the gear. That of course implies on the both of you. Great eye and technic despite the gear. BTW, Vanessa, love the ink on your arm 👏👏👍👍
I have to give this to Vanessa because she had the budget camera and I'm guessing 7 or 9 focus points and still got the photo sharp with no stabilization whatsoever. I think Chelsea needed some coffee to help her remember she had a soft Tamron lens @ 600mm. I don't have that problem with the Sigma 15-600mm Contemporary lens but hey apple to apples I say.
Great job - your print exceeded my expectations and gives Chelsea and her much newer Nikon gear a real competition. I think credit is also owed to that legendary EF 400mm 5.6L glass, which still does very well especially when you add the IBIS from the R3/R5/R6. I do wish that you both shot birds in flight for comparison. Yes it is pretty long odds for the 10d, but how sweet would that victory be??
I had the Tamron 150-600mm when it first came out and saw the exact same thing. It was frustratingly slow focus with anything over 500mm and what it did lock on to, was very soft.
You don’t need a Sony a7iv or canon r5 to get great wildlife photos. That d7500 is great and the old but still fantastic canon 7d mark ii are still super capable. Also that canon 400 mm f5.6 is an awesome lens for birds in flight.
Vanessa wins. Sharper and nicer composition. Interesting that Chels was so used to stabilisation that she neglected her shutter speeds. We can rely on technology too much sometimes, and forget photography basics.
10D and the D7500......budget in the used market today, but when new it is expensive for most consumers. Both cameras when new were in the enthusiast price range ($1200+). After all back then when the gear was new, pros were able to generate wonderful images from these cameras. No reason wonderful images can't be created with these cameras in the capable hands of Vanessa and Chelsea today. I guess I kinda have a different idea of budget and missed the boat on this shootout.
Great video! It shows only that what matters is an able photographer behind the camera - and less the megapixel count. Maybe a next idea for yet another video would be to take things even further - how about getting e.g. an original EOS 650 from 1987 (obviously a film camera) and pairing it up with a lens from that era ? Just goes to show you how much skill matters - Vanessa was able to get great shots in a genre completely out of her comfort zone using old gear.

My vote is for Vanessa this time, both photos are great I just prefer the composition from Vanessa. Just personal taste
So Chelsea brings a $1000 camera and you have a $100 one and still win? That's a beat down.
Enjoying this series...you did really great Vanessa!
So, Vanessa is the good photographer with the cheap gear.
