I’m waiting for a few more parts to come in for the install, but as soon as they arrive, I will be installing these brakes, I’ll make a comparison between the two setups, perform a test to see which is actually better with numbers, and show you what is needed in more detail.
These brake calipers are made out of aluminum, so if any area of the caliper isn’t painted, it isn’t a big deal as it will not rust. Nissan made the same version of these calipers out of steel, and those need much more attention as any are that is bare steel will rust and begin to corrode as soon as it comes in contact with oxygen (& water, & salt). So take your time to paint your brakes and protect them from the elements. If you’re looking to do this to your Audi, Honda, Subaru, or whatever brakes you have, instead of picking up the Nismo stickers as I did, pick up your appropriate one, and then install them before you spray on your clear coat.
If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email at milanmastracci@gmail.com. Thanks for watching!! :)

Went through these same steps + painting mine and in just a 1000 miles the paintnt started chipping / peeling away. Asked those who also painted theirs that have had no issue and all said I made a mistake which you are doing also. I neglected to cure them in an oven. Watched many more videos and this is very often recommended.

Very good point. When using the same paint on engine headers, you can do a cycle with the engine idling to heat them up and cure the paint before getting it too hot. You can’t do that with brakes but they are small enough to fit them in the oven and cure.

I always hang parts with a wire or string when painting. Garage door tracks work great. You don't have to touch or rearrange parts to get every possible angle. Immediately before and afterward- hit it a minute with a hair dryer to warm, remove dust, and speed tack each coat.

Pro tip: the first coat of primer should be very very light, just a light dusting. You should still be able to see the the original finish under the first dusting coat. Then 2nd coat should cover everything.

You did a nice job on the painting of the calipers. Maybe tape up the rubber boots before shaving the caliper surfaces to avoid any alloy shavings getting lodged between the rubber boots and bore next time. Also not a good idea painting the braking surface of the rotor. Otherwise some good tips, Thank you..

Disassemble calipers, tape off orifices, then paint in pieces, then rebuild and reassemble if you’re going for detail oriented. Also spray painting your rotors is not the same as a factory protective coating from the manufacturers, you’re ruining the friction surface of those rotors.

Before the clear, it's best the let all solvents evaporate from the base coat. They usually say leave the base coat for three hours, clear coats are very different to the paint and seals it in, it can cause bad results if the solvent is trapped. Even better is the let the base fully cure, sand back with 800 grit and then use the clear coat, then even cut back with 1200 to 1500 grit once it cures (not dries) and polish if you want it to be really glossy, with very little to no orange peel type of effect..

You also weakened the calliper. The reason that high rise is in the calliper is to thicken the centre area of the brake cup to stop distortion under hard and heavy braking.
You also do not wipe the rotor down with a rag as you leave fabric dregs on the rotor. You just spray off the surface with brake clean.
The brake rotors aren't just painted with basic paint either. It's specially design zinc coating that is designed to come off when bedding in, it is NOT the same as the paint you're using.

Lol anyone else cringing when he's handling caliper at the end? I would hate to see any finger prints on it. I'd let hang and cure for a day before even I go near it. But I won't lie. Looks dope. Keep it up man!!

If you wanted oem+ you should have gotten z32 calipers that still said nissan on them not that the nismo logo doesn't look good but that was the direction you said you wanted to go. I have ctsv brakes on my z32 and its hands down one of the best upgrades i've done but seeing as you started out single pot those z32s are gonna still gonna feel like a major upgrade

next time cover the pistons of the caliper before you "mill" down the material... that way the shavings dont get into the rubber and shred it day one.

You can put a little oil on a paper towel and rob it on the break surface. The paint will come off easily and a little alcohol will take the oil off the rotor surface.

I was wondering if the Cadillac brembo calipers would cost the same as the 300zx setup you did? Im stuck on which to choose because yours came out very good for what I want to do on my s14.

Whatever rubber you dont want painted just apply vasoline or brake slider lube which will resist the paint and protect the pistons and seals from particals of metal then wipes off instantly. Idk if i would shave my calipers! They are designed this way for heat resistant purposes! Think about it!

I wish I would have used primer on my calipers. I used dupli color brand caliper paint. The can says nothing about using a primer at all, it says to only prep the surface. I looked online and many say not to use primer. End result my paint is peeling off. I will be redoing these with VHT just as you did. With primer!

  • @RSXSykO

  • @dean3184

i would have cleaned the rotors like you did, but then wiped a light coat of oil on the friction surface when before you painted. Just wipe it off when its dry

To speed up the curing process during drying,Would it be best to speed up the curing process with a heat gun?

  • @PardnerCLUTCH
    @PardnerCLUTCH 5 років тому

Have you ever had issues with the decal trying to offgass when the calipers go through a heat cycle? I mean, you used high heat primer, high heat paint, and high heat clear, but then embedded a vinyl decal in there. I would like to do this, but the decal seems iffy.

Just use a simple file and some sandpaper to get rid of the casting imperfections. It will leave a much more even surface than what you did with the carbide burr.

Good video but do not use brake clean to prep the surface for painting. Most brake cleaners will leave behind a chemical residue that will prevent the paint biding. Also, the VHT paint does not require a primer. It will bond directly to a clean metal surface.
