Several viewers seem to have this feeling, and I remember feeling the exact same when I was well into studying Japanese. It’s demotivating after all the work you’ve put in.
So I’m going to share all the key steps that I believe are crucial to overcoming the Japanese language plateau, so we can all watch anime without the subtitles around the campfire and sing kumbaya 😌🙏

ひさしぶり!!We’re finally back with our first full-length video in japan!! 🥳🎉 sorry that it’s been a while, but full-time job + getting settled into japan made it take longer than expected💦 hope y’all have been well~ get ready for some life in japan videos soon!!
your videos are so helpful!! 😊
Which job you got?
I'd love to see more. I am just starting to learn Japanese and your video are actually great compared to most of the ones I've watched! Awesome journey you've had!
久し振り先生!
This guy is so wholesome he is the only reason I'm studyin' for my exams just so that I can study Japanese later
ahhhh beyond humbled to hear you say that 🥺🙇♂️ good luck on your exams!! and then good luck on the real studying 😉
I love that this channel is honest about the realities of learning language instead of trying to push bs "miracle study routines", makes me feel better about my progress
I really want to spread the truth about how long learning japanese takes because it sets people’s expectations right. But even tho the journey is long, it’s very rewarding 😙
As a beginner learning hiragana, I would not have ちち and はは ingrained in my mind as father and mother without anime Japanese. Obviously, early anime immersion is fantastically helpful.
Very true, anime can help solidify certain vocab that you hear over and over again! I just believe that for grammar and general listening skills (more than single vocab or set phrases), it’ll take a lot of studying outside of anime as well!
@@TokuyuuTV Oh very true, but my intended overlying meta take was that having ちち and はは ingrained suggests anime language may be a questionable conversational resource in some cases ;)
I totally agree with that. Anime helped me alot to go through the basic vocab
Yay Tokuyuu is back! Yet another quality video with great tips 😊 Glad to see you’ve settled and living your best life in Japan!
Thank you so much wing!! You’re always one of if not THE earliest one to watch my videos, appreciate your constant support, even after my little break 🥺 thank you for all the warm wishes, and hope you’ve been well too!! 🤧

thank you so much!! im glad you think so 🥺🤧
I hope so too. I just subscribed and liked Tukuyuu's video. I hope it help read and learn speaking Japanese.🤗👏👌
Great video! Your editing skills are amazing! Totally agree with you about the plateau not existing. I always say to people if you're studying frequently it's just impossible that you aren't improving. It's basically down to the Dunning-Kruger effect.
Thank you so much for the hype!! 😭🙏 ahhhh im glad to hear you think the same as well! Right?? It just aint possible to not improve when you’re studying consistently - it’s just a biggest task than you thought 😪
Glad to see you around here once again mate!
I think that you are absolutely right about this, it's a matter of studying consistently.
Aside from those channels that you have recommended, I'd like to recommend also the channel from あかね的日本語教室 who speaks in a really easy way to understand, that actually has helped me quite a bit on my comprehension.
Hope to see more videos from you!
Finally!! was eagerly waiting for another video 😍 this is one of the best, well-articulated and highly informative channel 👍🏼

Yo, this video helped me soo much. I started watching anime last year and then wanted to learn some Japanese, amd with some extra motivation from my school fellows i took it up. So forst i learned the hiragana and katakana with a little difficulty and then i realised that i would also have to tackle kanji amd i demotivated when i saw how many kanji i would have to learn and i thought" Nah, this aint for me ill just give up" then after a year i decided to get my shit together , but only after watching this video and learn some Japanese and since i knew the kana already. Anyways im starting the kanji amd wish me luck. Thanks a lot gor this video Tokyuu

I saw the notification of a new Tokuyuu video and it was like the Avatar has returned 🙌🏽 (actually I follow you on Instagram so ひさしぶり...じゃない haha) but it's always fun to see new a UA-cam video from you! This video came at the perfect time. Me and Japanese have been in need of serious couple's therapy... we're in a rough patch haha I've been studying for N3 (aka being viciously attacked with 看護 / 和語 😭haha) but have been reevaluating my study habits so that after I've finished N3, I can engage with the language in a way where I can, ya know, ACTUALLY ENJOY it (instead of weeping silently into my books while I study) and this has given me a good foundation for how to approach the next step together. So thanks for the therapy. Let me know where to send the $$$ 😂 As always, keep living your best life! It's always great to see other language learners (or you know, anyone) thriving!
AHAHAHAHAH I’m honoured to be the avatar in this story 😂😂 and im super humbled you follow me on insta, im glad you’re staying updated!! 😙 “couple’s therapy” LMAOOO such an elegant way of putting it 😂 studying N3 is amazing tho!! Like you said, you’re already building a super solid foundation from which you can inject more fun studying so you don’t have to always be crying after learning the 3rd reading for a kanji 😝 im super happy to hear my videos help you!! and no need for the $$$, reading your awesome comments are more than enough for payment 😭🤧✨ keep up the fantastic work!! 🥳
@@TokuyuuTV Thought I'd drop in and give you that talk show "where are they now" 4 month update 😂 though it wasn't without some emotional trauma, Japanese and I worked our way through N3 and found out we passed! 😮💨 It's re-established some trust between us so we're on the upswing. Gonna finally spend some quality time together enjoying some chill anime and easier elementary school novels before we try for N2. If you ever need one of those cheesy satisfied customer testimony's, we got you! haha My next immediate battle is figuring out what words are... appropriate when the 小中学校生徒 teach me something new 😂 But baby steps right? haha Hope you're enjoying the さ〜〜〜〜む! life haha

Danggg but you showed up pretty early regardless!! 😮👏 thanks for the warm welcome back 🤧
Another great video, and a really aesthetic background. Excited to see more of what's to come! Even though I'm still really early into my language learning, I've hit a plateau in the sense that I know what I need to do to proceed, but don't know what steps are best to take.
I've set up Anki, started reading Tae Kim's guide to grammar, and just glossed over the beginner Kanji in Kanji Study. All the resources you've recommended in your previous videos. However, I'm not really sure where to begin from here, I don't know if I should be reviewing all 3 of these at the same time, or learn the grammar, then vocab and Kanji, etc.
Additionally, from the vocab that I've reviewed on Anki there's sometimes Kanji associated with those words. Should this be something I memorize, or just focus on the hiragana/katakana spelling, then if I remember the associated Kanji it would just be like a bonus bit of knowledge?
Sorry for the paragraphs of questions, I got into a routine, and now not knowing how to proceed has thrown me off these past couple of days.
Thanks for leaving such a thoughtful comment!! I absolutely love that you’ve taken the steps to set up those resources and got started, fantastic start!! 😙 I’d say to do all three, but you can rotate the days if doing them all everyday is too much. For vocab, just focus on the hiragana spelling, and like you said, if you begin to recognize some kanji that’s a bonus! But memorizing the vocab with the kanji is a lot to take it so i would ignore the kanji for now. Wishing you all the best on your journey, you’re doing an amazing job already!! 🥳
@@TokuyuuTV Thank you so much for the reply, it reallt has given me the direction I needed. Now, it is time to grind out those hieroglyphics.
I'm going to come back to this in July/August, after I've hopefully taken the JLPT test to see if I've achieved N5 at the minimum, and N4 with some optimism.
thank you so much for the motivation
Im glad my video could help motivate you 🤧 you got this!! 🥳

Thanks so much, this video was really helpful! At the moment I've been studying japanese for around 115 days trying to find resources that work, and now I think I just need to grind vocabulary every day to reach N4. Thanks!
good for you for keeping up the study grind for 4 months now, that’s awesome!! 🥳 and yes, i think it’s less about finding the perfect resource and more about just putting in the consistent daily effort. you got this!! 😤✊
@@TokuyuuTV thanks so much :) my progress isn't as fast as I would like it to be but I can write around 130 kanji can recognise a couple hundred and can form sentences. Unfortunately I've tried to immerse in Japanese content but I always find it either really easy or ridiculously hard, so I think I need to keep up the grind before I can watch anime without subtitles. Thanks for replying :)
that’s fantastic progress, keep it up and stay patient!! and native level content is really difficult to understand when you’re still learning, so take it slow and try to find beginner-intermediate content that matches your skill level!

Ton of resources packed into 8 minutes! Could you walk through the Kindle setup for people living overseas in a video?
im glad you think so!! 😙 i think there are other videos on youtube on how to do it, but the key steps are linking it to an amazon japan account and downloading the japanese/English dictionary and setting it as the default!
Tokuyuu you have no idea how obsessed i am with your videos
im absolutely flattered!! thanks for watching my vids, and ill keep them coming 🫡
I'm right now in a language plateau since I started N3. I'm trying to start a daily routine, but it doesn't work. I'll try again and again
definitely do your best to maintain that daily routine! like i say in the video, if you’re studying consistently everyday there’s no way your japanese cannot improve. Just need to give it more time 😌
I just started studying Japanese and I still struggle just being able to read Katakana and recognize characters in general. I'm terrified of kanji as well, but I know if I just sit for even ten minutes a day I can improve. I've already been studying Korean for a while and, while I'm not consistent at the moment, whenever I see or hear something in Korean I recognize, I get super happy and it gives me the motivation to keep learning or at least keep reviewing words I already know so I don't forget them when I don't have the time to sit and learn new ones.
I love your attitude!! It definitely can feel overwhelming at first looking at everything there is to learn, but like you said even a small amount of time each day goes a longggg way towards chipping away at it 😌 the key is to keep going. Keep up the awesome work with both japanese and korean!! 🥳
For those who are in the N5~N4 lv I recommend listening to The Bite size Japanese Podcast😉
thanks for leaving a recommendation!! it can definitely be difficult to find listening resources for N5-N4 so thanks for sharing 😙

Hey Tokuyuu, what app do you recommend for learning japanese vocabulary and grammar up to at least N3 level, ive been having trouble finding a good app so i thought it would be a good idea to ask you. Hopefully you have a great time in japan and keep up the helpful videos! Thanks!
I mention those resources in my vocab and grammar videos!! Watch those first and feel free to ask me any questions after that 😌 thanks for the warm wishes!!
Even if you're watching anime with the subs while studying Japanese at an early stage, that's okay! You can try to pay attention to what's being said in Japanese and then look at the subtitles to fill in the gaps. If you hear a word and you think you know what it means, you can look it up and find out, because figuring things out makes you remember it easier! Believe me, it takes a lot less Japanese knowledge than you think to be able to turn off the subtitles, and after that you'll keep learning more and more anyway.
Watching anime with subs can still provide some practice like you said, but i still think consuming media that matches your level is far more helpful from my personal experience! I also have to disagree that it takes less knowledge than you think to understand anime without subs 😝 at least if we’re talking about understanding 80%+! maybe with visuals, emotional tone and such you can get an idea of what’s going on, but then I feel like you’re guessing based on cues rather than thoughtfully digesting the words and building understanding of the actual language. Love that your sharing your thoughts tho, even if they’re different from mine 😌
@@TokuyuuTV I know about comprehensible input, because as Stephen Krashen says, i+1 is the easiest way to acquire language. Since I hated doing the graded readers and stuff while I was still a noob, I preferred to go for things lower than 70-80% of my level, because the content was still interesting, I was able to tolerate the ambiguity more, so I got through it with a LOT more dictionary lookup. When I said you need less Japanese than you think to watch anime without subs, what I didn't mention was that if you know give or take 1000 of the most common words, you can understand roughly 80-85% of anime, and the thing that gets you to 95-100% is those less common words, which unlike the really common words, are a lot harder to learn out of context, so you're better off learning them in context. If you don't know 1000 common words yet, you can learn those words in context too if you want to start anime without subs earlier

Great vid as always but one question can I use an app called Duolingo

overtime better not be the reason your gone
ahahahahaha thankfully no overtime!! but work has definitely been challenging me 🥵 there will be a new video up in the very near future 😉
Hello tokuyuu I have a question when your just starting Japanese and you finish hiragana and Katakana how do you start to say sentences
i would focus on learning basic grammar! that’s ultimately gonna be the foundation for building sentences, and you can practice saying the example sentences 😙

@@TokuyuuTV Thank you! 😊🌸
Do you know a good program or app that has all 2100 ish Kanji? The setup I want is like, throw me 3 random kanji a day I haven't learned yet. So eventually it would force me through all of them.
There's ikanji which is completely free but the ads can get annoying. It's tolerable if you're only using it to learn a few kanji a day tho.
@@Coco-oh2ov Thanks! I'll check it out, never heard of it.
ビデオは楽しかった!おつかれさまでした
楽しめてよかった!ありがとうございます🙇♂️💦
I have a question: Exactly what does "study 3 kanji" mean? Let's say you encounter a kanji you've never seen before. You get out your dictionary, figure out the stroke order, (am I on the right track?) and then what? Say it thrice, and write it 5 times? Say it once, and write it ten times? Or what exactly? Did you use Heisig, or something with actual English translation? Also, how's everything going there? How about the job? Thank you, and I wish everyone smooth sailing on their language journey.
I have a video on how i learned kanji, so be sure to check that out on my process for learning them!
and the job and everything is going well so far 🥳 feeling more settled in than last year
