Not a mistake, but once when I asked my senpai a doubt while texting, she asked me "タイプできる？” (Can you type in Japanese?) And this was just around the time when I was watching Jujutsu Kaisen, and Todo has a line where he asks Itadori "どんな女のタイプだ？” So I thought my senpai is asking me "Do you have type(in girls?)" It was pretty embarrassing when I told her what I thought she meant, and she started laughing too omg :""") xD

One of my many mistakes was when I said "suzushii" to mean "cool" as in "audacious" and my sensei laughted because it is "cool" as in "refreshing" 😅... I just found this channel and I am enjoying every single video, keep it up, man 👍🏻

My most embarassing moment was when we tried to say "thank you FOR~~", and mistakenly used the pattern "(〜のために) ありがとう" because we were initially told that it was how to say "for" in Nihongo. 😮💨😫
And we said that line to all the Japanese in the office. No wonder their face were like "なに?!" 😂😂😂

I put a time marker for 5:55 into an Anki flash card, so I can come here to listen to the phrase, なんと いうんだっけ, for pronunciation practice. But afterwards, I also always like skipping over to the "my advice for improving" section just to watch it again because the part with the "sign language" is so hilarious. xD And the other guy's confused expression... haha! I love it.

I honestly can’t remember all my mistakes since I make A LOT of them but my recent one was mixing up いそいで and いそがしくて and my teacher was like “why are you so busy in the morning even before going to work“ We had a good laugh😂
I have to agree so much on being shameless though. Even if I made so much silly mistakes never did any Japanese people judge me (one even apologized to me for correcting my mistake lol) and I’m so grateful to them.

I always remember having a conversation in Japan and had no idea what the word for 'scissors' was, so I described them as 紙を切る事 😂
Definitely a fantastic way to work around not knowing the word, and there’s no way japanese people wouldn’t understand you! 😙 tip: 事 is used for ideas/actions, whereas 物(もの) is used for physical objects, like scissors!

The funniest miss comunication miss while speaking japanese was in a reunion we used to call お茶べり（お茶を飲んでのしゃべり会）in where we would share out hobbies. And at that time (I was under N5 while my partners where almost at N2 or higher) I tried to say いっぱい読みます, but I said いっぱい飲みます in stead! 笑
For those who didn-t understand the joke, I tried to say "I enjoy to read a lot" but in stead, what I actually came up with was "I enjoy to DRINK a lot" LOL

Another great video of yours! 🤩👏 Not surprising, though! But I suppose there won't be too many supportive and encouraging words, so I'll keep saying this!! :) By watching this video, I realized that your tips apply not only to Japanese but to any other language! English was my second language and even though I'd studied it for many years at school, I became fluent only by having to constantly speak to others. At first, I was thinking about how to say something correctly and ended up not even saying it as I thought I'm not sure whether it was correct. However, everything changed when I still had to communicate daily in English (I did my internship abroad) and in the end, I realized that hey, I started talking, yes, making mistakes, but TALKING! And, importantly, THINKING in English, not translating directly. So thinking in Japanese to learn it better does make so much sense!
To be honest, from time to time I have those moments when I lose my "way" when learning Japanese as I come across such contradictory feelings - it feels as if the more I know/learn Japanese, the more I feel that there's, even more, I don't know. It crushes that motivation in such moments 😁🙈 Buuut (!) when I watch your videos, it really boosts my motivational levels and acts as supporting pillars to keep going no matter what! It's not about time (how quickly you learn), not about how much or little you know but just constantly moving forward, learning daily and having fun alongside! So thank you so much for such support and encouragement! I'm happy you do what you do!!!! ❤️🙏
P.S. It's not a Japanese mistake but it was still embarrassing at that time: I was learning English and German at school and in the beginning of the English lesson teacher asked certain words that we learnt last time. She asked me how would "German language" be, of course, I had to say "German" but instead, I said, "Deutsch" [it means "German" in German]. Everyone in the class started laughing and I didn't understand what was going on. I felt really awkward and just a bit later I realized that I mixed languages. More than 10 years have passed but I still remember such an awkward moment 😁

I had the exact same experience where i failed the N2 because i ran out of time in the reading section 😂 however your result turns out, just keep working hard and you will keep getting better! Ill try to make more videos for advanced level learners in the future 😌
@@TokuyuuTV I figured out (after 20 years of learning Japanese, been fluent for about 12) an epic way to learn to speed read stuff. Play visual novel games on auto and try to keep up with everything, can change the speed the text scrolls too in most games. The fastest speed is hilarious, it’s like a block of text in a split second, although I can barely process one sentence let alone four at that speed it really forces me to try to process at much quicker speeds. And then when I go back to read normally I find myself seeing much more text than normal and it’s like the heck I didn’t know I could read this well before (still have tons of room to improve on vocab and everything though but yeah lol xD)
Considering visual novel games have harder vocab than JLPT , the JLPT should feel easy for speed reading and when someone tries to pass it they will have much more time to reread passages etc
It’s a lot easier to group bigger chunks of information together with this technique so a visual novel game is ideal for immersion in reading (I’m also too lazy to read real books kinda so works out for lazy people such as myself 😂)

My girlfriend is a native Japanese speaker (since she was born and lives there lol) and I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve messed up my Japanese and she got upset lol but still regardless of what you say, no one will actually be upset nor should you feel bad because the other person will more than likely know you didn’t mean whatever it was lol
exactly!! making mistakes is unavoidable and even necessary to learning a language〜 and having a native girlfriend is a huge advantage, definitely use lots of japanese with her!! 🤧
workarounds and hand gestures, although not the most effective method, are like my saviors in social situations in Japan.
When I went to the pharmacy to find band aid, I asked the store clerk, "kizu no ＊*gestures covering my arm*＊ mono. (she didn't get it) chi ga deru toki (I didn't say to stop the bleeding cuz it didn't come to my mind)" after a few more body gestures and workaround words later, the store clerk went, "aaa, bansoko!"

When someone asks me to say something or teach them something in japanese I always say "atatakakunakatta" just to mess around.
My most embarrasing moment was when on the test i forgot how to say "Two days ago" and instead of saying futsukamae i wrote... ninichikanmae... I was thinking of this for almost half a year now...

I thought of an idea to remember which syllable has the higher pitch accent (at least, for simple beginner words that are often just 2 or 3 syllables long). I usually create a mnemonic scene to act as a visual for remembering the sounds. For example, to remember 分かる (to understand, or an interjection that means "I know! I think so, too!" at least that's what I think it means), I use the characters Kanga and Roo from the old cartoon, Winnie The Poo. *Wa* lking around outside, *Ka* nga explains things to *Roo* as he nods, understanding. (Sorry, I had to add spaces to "Walking" and "Kanga," to get the bold text to highlight properly. I am trying to highlight the sounds Wa, Ka and Roo, which is Ru).
The extra visual that I add to this mnemonic (and other mnemonics) is either picturing a little Santa Claus hat to represent the North Pole (meaning, to put the higher pitch accent on the first syllable) OR picturing little penguins following them around to represent the South Pole (meaning, to put the higher pitch accent on the second syllable. So in this case, since the pitch accent goes up on 分かる on the second syllable, I'll picture little penguins following Roo around.
This is using direction (north, south, east, west) to remember specifics about a word. I learned about this and used this when I learned Norwegian for a few years.
I plan on using this sort of "directional mnemonic" for remembering past tense and future tense and whatever else may exist in Japanese. Doesn't have to be NSEW. Let's say I use the image of me standing in my kitchen, to remember a certain verb. Maybe facing the microwave on the left is associated with past tense, and facing the stove on the right is associated with future tense, and facing the fridge is associated with present tense. These can be connected to whatever mnemonic or scene is happening in the kitchen that is a trigger for remembering the present tense of the verb.
I hope I am explaining this well. It might sound confusing at first, but it really helped me both in the past and now at this beginner level of Japanese. I am fully aware that there are very long words in Japanese, so I'll have to come up with a way to adjust the directional thing, perhaps, for where the pitch accent is, in the word, in the future as I learn them.
wowww this is a really intricate system you made for remember pitch accent! I love the use of imagery and directions to cue in where the pitch is. It sounds like you’re a very visual based learner!
You’ll also start to just natural remember words and pitch accents, so you won’t need to remember the imagery forever, but it can be a good way to recall in the beginning 😌 good luck on your japanese language journey, i love your passion!!
Ive kinda had to go into my own corner since my goal is to read a Haruki Murakami book in Japanese. ( I'm nurodivergent and shows can actually be way too over stimulating.)
that’s fair!! if reading a full book in japanese is your goal, then it makes sense to spend more time on your own studying kanji, grammar, and vocab!

I'm learning my fifth language now, and I realized always start thinking in the language and just fill in words you don't know with words from other foreign languages, sure at the start you'll need to fill sentences a lot, but it gradually becomes more and more complete sentences that will also become more natural with time

Although its very minor, the hirigana character for "hu" has a slight "F" sound to it, so it would sound like "hfu". It is a bit hard to describe in text.
yeah good point! It does take a little bit of getting use to doing the “hfu” sound, but i find that most foreigners can master it relatively quickly😌

ahhhh those are also really difficult sounds at first! and even now i sometimes hear the japanese r as a d sound 😂 but they’re pronounced the same as the japanese r i described in the video, once you master the r i think those sounds will become a lot easier!
I have n1 and work in a Japanese company but my accent sucks. It really sucks as people don't realise how good you otherwise are at speaking japanese but I have quite a severe speech disorder in English so I guess my dream of sounding good in japanese was never going to happen.
First of all, congrats on achieving N1, that’s incredible!! 🥳 im sorry to hear about your circumstance. I would be surprised to hear that people wouldn’t know how good you are, considering you probably understand most of what they’re saying at full speed. Perhaps letting them know about your speech disorder would help let them know that it’s a difficulty with delivery rather than comprehension or ability. I don’t know anything about your personal situation, but I’ve heard of many people who’ve had speech disorders who’ve either completely overcome it or are able to strongly manage it after lots of help and practice. Don’t give up until you’ve tried everything to the fullest!

My “funniest” miscommunication was forgetting 「日本人」and of course I didn’t use fillers, I just sat there wondering how I forgot a word I even knew the pitch of🥲 All you can do is laugh through the pain when it wakes you at 3am.

Yeah, i think the best thing is to just having fun of speaking japanese. There was one time when sensei asked me "いつ髪を切りましたか" (髪 - hair) but i thought it was 紙 - paper so i just said "神を切りませんでした。よく パソコン を使います。" Well it was hilarious for me so i wasnt ashamed.

Yeah definitely pronouncing pitch correctly makes your Japanese sound fluent, but normally Japanese don't care so much about that.
plus we japanese know it's hard to speak without making mistakes 'cause Japanese language is not your mother tongue. Even you made mistakes, I bet most of Japanese will try to figure out what you really mean.

Ofc!! A lot of anime characters’ ways of speaking are super dramatized and unique, not really reflective of actually daily Japanese. But it can still be helpful in learning overall sentence structure and pronunciation 😙
@@TokuyuuTV definitely agree with the sentence structure part :), but a lot of them even use vocab or grammar that as you mentioned may be unique to the character or not really a common way of speaking. Young Naruto’s ってばよ at the end of (basically) every sentence would probably be a perfectly good example of something unique that I don’t think even exists in the language (at least not in the way in which he uses it). As far as pronunciation….I would agree to disagree on that one lol…again, as you mentioned they like to dramatize stuff in anime which means their pronunciation can also be a bit exaggerated.
Not every character does this…some might sound perfectly natural and not exaggerated, but it isn’t common for beginners to already know this kind of stuff which is why I wanted to mention it. Learning Japanese through anime is pretty fun, but it should always be done with caution and probably should not be the only way to learn :)
