You refill butane lighters upside down. When it starts squirting out, its full. You can even hold the lighter upside down and push the nozzle so that any excess oxygen can escape.
I remember when the first iPhone came out, I didn’t like the Touch Keyboard, so I got a Physical Keyboard Case, which at the time it cost more than the iPhone itself, but I thought it was worth it. But, it was a Slide Out, SO it wasn’t always visible, like this one

For the future, you want to refuel using a butane bottle upside down. You are releasing more gas than liquid from the side or above. Sometimes a butane lighter will have a clear part you can see the fuel through to help you fill it up properly.
