"Two tips I'd like to share: besides ironing the fabric before you sew, you might also want to actually starch it, especially if the fabric is very thin or at all stretchy, or if there are any smallish details you want to add (like pockets). Once I started starching all my fabrics before sewing them I was FLABBERGASTED how much easier they were to manipulate and sew perfectly. You can finger-press a hem and it STAYS! This tip is especially useful if sewing anything bias, curved, or slippery. (I learned this when making hand-pieced quilts.) The starch washes right out of the fabric afterwards, no problem.
Second tip: in a waistband with wide elastic and a simple casing like this, sometimes I find the elastic rolls or folds over. To fix this problem I sew vertically across the elastic, through the waistband, at four corners of my waist (front, back, sides). This doesn't interfere at all with the waistband's movement or stretch within the casing, but does prevent it from rolling or folding. The natural gathers in the waistband totally hide these little extra vertical lines of stitching."

Salomé Garcés Hernández Spray starch, or fabric starch, is sold in aerosol cans, or as a liquid you can spray on your fabrics, or dip them in (depending how stiff you want them to end up). I've made homemade fabric starch by boiling cornstarch in water, so it really isn't far away from being like a food, so don't feel bad. "Niagra" is one spray starch brand name they sell near me, but I don't know if it's sold world wide. "Vano" is a liquid starch brand.

In Girl Scouts we made bags to put our camping stuff in and we used a casing technique for the drawstring part of the bag. 2:28 reminded me of that.

Yay!!Thank you so much for this tutorial! Could you make more tutorials using non-stretchy fabrics? I just started self-learning and so only got myself non-stretch fabric, and sewing zippers have been quite intimidating. The tutorials out that made it seem easy, but my strings always get caught in the sewing machine and I always spend more time trouble shooting than sewing the actual garment itself lol X'D
its perfectly fine to use non stretch fabrics.

This is my preferred method of making lolita skirts! I use 3.5 times my waist of fabric, and make nice, full skirts that will hold at least two leg avenue petticoats. It usually takes me a bit more time because I add lace, bows, and hand gathered ruffles though.
Alisa Boyce-James to calculate the yardage of material needed do you just multiply your waist measurement by 3.5?
Yes! Take your waist measurement and multiply by 3.5 for a very full skirt(full enough for a petticoat to fit under)
Rectangle skirts are my jam now...my closet is getting full, time to ditch store bought clothes.

Out here in 2019 currently trying to make this skirt (had to take a break cause i ran out of spoons but SO FUN) cant wait to finish it
These were the first kind of skirts I made. But I sewed my skirt together then folded down a casing at the top leaving a 1-2 inch opening for the elastic. It finished off cleaner that way. These rectangular skirts look better on narrow waists. when you get to a large or bigger, go for an A-line shape instead. Just cut your waist to match your hip size then gather with elastic. It's more tailored that way. Love your videos! Gives me lots of creative ideas. Have you tried a tiered skirt? You make a series of rectangular cuts then gather each one to create a flattering full skirt in an A-line shape. (I do 5 tiers: my hip size, then add 5 inches, 10 or so the next and so on. I like my skirts full so I do a 104" bottom tier. I actually cut 10 pieces of fabric, front and back panels. For a fun Bohemian look I coordinate 3 different fabrics and alternate tiers. Just chose an overall matching color and mix prints. Best done with cotton fabric that holds its shape. Drapey stuff sags. I get my ideas from some of my favorite store-bought items.)

Excellent tutorial, just finished making my first ever item of clothing!! The shape is really nice and flattering. I was a bit of an idiot though and forgot to check that the elastic wasn't twisted before sewing it... tried to fix it but kinda failed!! The rumpled waist-band hides it though, so I don't mind. So awesome thanks for sharing! Btw it is cheaper if you buy like 1 m x 1 m fabric so you can cut two long strips and sew them together and then you will have 2m fabric strip instead for the shirt :) though you can´t choose how long u want the skirt orsm that much? + it is waaaay cheaper if u want to make many different skirts

Hi! I'm making progress but I'm really struggling with the last step. Please can anyone recommend any tutorials for hand sewing the gap shut without sewing through the elastic? Most of the elastic casing tutorials I can find online seem to thread the elastic through a horizontal gap, whereas this is a little different.

If you tape your elastic to a pencil it makes it much easier to pull through!!

Hey c: That tutorial helped me a lot, I made my first own skirt! :D But I used an ugly old fabric just for practice, and I'm wondering what do you use in this video? I know you said it's a cotton fabric, but it looks so light, thin and kinda stiff? Is there a specific name for this kind of fabric, so I can google it? :o

IchigoArts It looks like an old sheet or bedding so it is propably just 100% cotton but a light weight kind. If you are buying a new fabric specifically for making clothes then google 'dress fabric' etc. I'd suggest sticking to cotton or cotton blend (usually w/ polyester) at first since it's not too slippery to sew. Just don't buy quilting weight, there's a lot of it out there, since it tends to be too thin.

Practice makes perfect when it comes to hand sewing. You'll never get better if you don't try. There are a ton of tutorials on youtube that can help you. Also, "beginner" sewing machines are actually fairly affordable. The machine I use was $80 and was given to me by my grandmother when I was 15 (I'm 22 now) and it still works great! I've also seen ones for less than $80. Singers and Brothers are good first machines.
