*whisper* making the waist too large means you can put in an elasticated waist, plus the elasticated waist means the excess doesn't just hang at the hips!. Handkerchief skirts/square circle skirts are the love of my life (I wore 7 layers of different chiffon and organza skirts I'd made in different colours out one day to cheer myself up, I felt like a fairy!) and making them elasticated means they are so much more versatile. Options I've loved for the "cheaty"(/quick and simple) waist band are:
1.Bomber jacket elastic. So simple, not the prettiest, but comfy and so simple, you just sew along the non-stretched, gathered edge and BOOM... or BOMB, depending on how you feel in jubilation.
2. ribbed edging for sweaters. I put some elastic through the centre for extra hold, but it works amazingly and looks very clean.
I know no-one's going to have read this far, but please try this. In tartan for this look, in chiffon or organza (semi-transparent floaty fabrics) for layering or showing off your gorgeous underwear (situation permitting!), jersey (t-shirt) fabric for the ultimate comfy, flowy, easy skirt and not having to hem (depending on the thickness of the fabric). Put pretty beads on the 4 corners that sparkle when you move for an ornate look, anything, these are so fun and really easy.
Try it with a little square of paper first to work out what you're doing with the waist, I promise you can do it.
Ooooh thank you! I actually think the waist of the original skirt was elasticated, too (after looking more closely at the pictures on the product page!). And it's always quicker/easier not adding a zipper ;) good for if my weight fluctuates too (which it does) - the skirt will still fit! Thanks for all of the help! Gosh I love UA-cam - half of my sewing knowledge comes from awesome comments like these :)
suz Okay, I know this is late, but I just had to say thank you for this advice! And thank you to Miss Annika Victoria for this awesome tutorial of course!
I just finished my skirt, only I actually tried sewing mine with an elastic waistband casing as per your suggestion. I was honestly in a little over my head, but after recruiting my mom to help, we got it done hahaha.
I'm so happy with how it turned out, and I can't wait to start wearing it! :D
suz g
suz and
suz I read it all

+AmazingBella IsNotOnFire I'm so proud of my fucking phandom (follow me on insta @phans.child) *slowclap
For some extra cuteness, I think laying another square of fabric diagonally over the first square looks great!
I know I will never be doing any of these crafts bc I can't do crafts to save my life but these are just the best to watch
haha ikr! xD
I love DIYing, but when they bring up math its like they're talking in a different language.
+Tymira Smith I think that you would enjoy my UA-cam channel! I do all things DIY and I would love some suggestions!
So true
aryn؟
Just finished this skirt, it's 5:06 in the morning and I watched, rewind, and fast forwarded this video 50 times. It came out good a few minor adjustments will do. Even though on the outside of the skirt you can see the thread. I also did you mistake just so I wouldn't get mixed up. I absolutely loved this video.
+Raina Etheridge hahah that's dedication to even copy my mistake! ;) yay! good work :)
+Annika Victoria I'm recreating the tennis skirt and I'm generating so many views.... I watched it like... 20 times?
+Annika Victoria please do a arctic monkeys shirt. ive commented that on other videos too plss
Idk if Annika will even see this but I want to say thanks so much for these videos. They really inspired me to want to sew, and today with the help of this tutorial I made my first item of clothing ever! So just thank you so much for making such awesome content, its super helpful and amazing!!
+Mika Ward You are so welcome :)
I love how you include your mistakes so that people know it's NORMAL to mess up and that they are fine if they make it too big or too small.
*watches this* *never makes it*
same lol, i have watched this more than 5 times by now, and it just won't come to me
lol my hand stitch isn't to bad just really time consuming but either way your diys are awesome and make me want to practice more
I've just got a job at a large fabrics/homewares/craft store in Australia and know little to nothing about sewing and fabrics and your videos help me so much, oh my goodness!! You are a life saver, thank you for being so informative and explaining things along the way! :)
+N Dewhirst Cool job!! & No problem :)
It would be cool to do a fashionable trench coat!
Funny story, Annika, I wanted to make a green circle skirt for my family's Christmas party about 2-3 years ago, but I messed up the fabric measurements and ended up just making a square circle skirt instead! 😂🙃💕
this is my absolute FAVORITE UA-cam series!!!! this is so awesome!!
Annika! I was recently on your blog and you wondered how to go about storing fabrics and saving space, I once struggled with this problem also but there's an easy fix! Take cardboard and cut out a rectangle (I make mine 7 by 7 inches long) and simply wrap your fabric around it! I didn't have a twitter nor a blog account and reaching out through Instagram...my comment probably would have been washed away by the loads of your amazing fans ^-^ hope this helped ;)
It is so great that you keep in your stuff up's, because it shows that even those who are great at what they do can stuff up and that it's normal.
I love yours so much more! This series is so perfect for a short girl like me! The original skirt would probably go down to my calves but now I can make my own that would fit a million times better!
I'm also plus sized but have a very dramatic hourglass figure so it's impossible to find designer clothes that fit well. Your channel is awesome!
+Amanda Rain Yay! this makes me so happy. :D
+Amanda Rain I'm the opposite, I now know how to make it longer as being tall makes everything so short on me.
honestly, thank you for doing this video. I was watching your recent videos when I saw this old one. I made 2 of these skirts for a school project last year and got an A, even with being just a beginner in sewing! your videos really do help, and your explanation is spot on in every video.
I just made this, after drooling over it for ages. I didn't have a big piece of fabric so I cut 9 15x15 squares from a bunch of old tee shirts, sewed them into a 45x45 (ish) square, and started from there! Thanks so so much. Your channel is what's inspired me to teach myself to sew!
I t looks like when I knot a jacket around my waist x3
same
That's the point (: so you wouldn't have to keep retying it.Pretty useful eh?
Dats the point
DIY mermaid tail blanket! pleaseee it looks awesome and really easy to make but idk hooow! 😊
look up the sorry girls mermaid blanket
If your still looking she said she would make it the same way Corrine from threadbanger would Corrine has a video up on her channel
I've been interested in textiles a while now especially with school and I decided to make a skirt because the next level in my textiles was clothes which was the main reason I went into textiles and thanks to you I've now been able to make two skirts already one didn't go quite to plan but it fits and the other one - this one - avoided the main issue of last time-the half circle skirt- so I'd like to thank you for allowing me to take this next step and you've really inspired me xx
Thank you Annika, I have been seeing these all over different stores and I was really wanting to do something like this rather than buy an expensive one these days. I even saw one store actually adding leggings under the skirt sewed in, and said "I still remember I have some fabric I can use to make the skirt itself. But thank you so much for showing how you made it along with some of the links you provided. It really helped out and got my confidence on making skirts up.
I think it looks great...you rock and u have so much talent I've binge watched most of your bids....I seriously need sewing classes
I never took sewing classes haha. Just watch UA-cam tutorials that's seriously all you need ;)
+Bianca Platinum self-taught sewers high-five! ✋
Found your channel today and already watched several videos! I love your style and can't wait to see more videos from you :)
I just found your channel and have watched the majority of your videos. You're amazing and I particularly love the videos of clothing you make from scratch and your fabric painting/ image transfer. Also love that you're willing to show us your mistakes :)
I just combined this video with your no zipper method for a skirt, and I love it! This was my first sewing project and your videos helped me SO much! Thank you!!!
would you consider doing a cute coat for the fall and winter? im just now learning how to sew and you seem to have the only videos that make any sense to me.
i love how this really is just a short skirt that looks longer
That's what I thought 😂
bookisland You could dresscode cheat with it
I saw this and instantly knew where my Legend of Zelda fabric was going. I'm fairly new to sewing, but it came out wearable in public, thanks for the awesome tutorial! C:
I've been watching your channel for years and this afternoon I'm finally sitting down to make this skirt for myself!! very excited :)
Oh my lord you're channel is amazing..
Wow, I love your videos! You make me want to buy a sewing machine!
Same ahah
Your video's help me so much, thank you Anikka! I'm currently making an elf-ish dress thing and it requires two overlapping square skirts, and your tutorials make my life a thousand times easier.
I absolutely love your videos and the fact that you make most of your clothing/accessories. Your directions are so clear and easy to follow along and even with the really hard projects you do.
💕💕 THANK you!
this skirt is like a combination of tying a check shirt around your waist and a skirt
I MADE IT!!! #SoMuchHeadache #Newbie #SoWorthIt
Maja N I am proud of you lol
This skirt is bloody amazing!!! Like it just looks so flattering and bloody awesome!! xx
I always get super happy when I see your videos. I also always wondered how they made "square" circle skirts. And now I know. Thank you for this lovely video :)
+Nita Brantley You're so welcome, thanks for leaving me lovely comments all the time!
I want that skirt! I wish I had a sewing machine! 😫 but anyways, great job!
I need to make this for my sister, she's been hounding me to make her more skirts.
I just made this skirt and it turned out great! Thank you for this tutorial, it was very easy to follow! Keep up the good work, Annika!
Oh my goodness, this is so cute! Great job, I will have to drag out a few squares of my fabric and give this a go. Great job, as always.
'*shows video to textiles teacher super casually'
wtf kind of school do you have a textiles class
Lola Snyder my school is what public school and it has a clothing and textile class ect
I don't personally like the look of the skirt but damn you've got the sewing skills to pay the bills
I love all your crafty sewing ideas! Thanks keep going!
I made one of this skirts for me, months ago and I love it! So simple and awesome.
YES YOU DID IT?!?! THANKS
Yay cheese! Thank you 💕
Would it work with an elastic band instead of a zipper?
+eternalypissed Yes :)
Your channel is my favorite already! This is lovely!
hey! I just found your channel and i'm currently LOVING the stuff you make! Keep it coming, you're fantastic!
Hi I'd love to make this skirt but I don't own a sewing machine, is this project possible to do totally by hand or do you need to use a sewing machine?
Yes! You can do it by hand - some people have - it just requires a lot of patience :) especially around the square hem, if you're planning on hemming it!
+Annika Victoria ah thank you for the reply! I'm so excited to try it ^^
+Shinigamipip Haha your picture is amazing. Grell is my favorite character.
I did it by hand it took a while though
Yeah it'll work by hand
its like a table cloth XD like really good job.
table clothes really making skirts or dress . the cloth and crochet ones
...? in English please friend. I'm not trying to be mean, i legit cannot understand what you just said.
a list materials to use
i absolutely love your diy i'm so happy there is a new video. i'm so excited to try and make some of the things on your channel
So I was about to going to sleep, but then out of nowhere this channel came to my mind. I have not seen these videos in 4 years and these videos bring some nostalgia.
Can you make a DIY for detachable Peter pan / Wednesday collars ? Pleaaaase !
Can I make this if I'm plus sized? would there be extra steps for me to take?
+Jinxi Dash (PlastiqueGlam) Of course you can! There aren't any extra steps, just use your own measurements and adjust the pattern accordingly :)
THANK YOU!!!! i have one more question how much fabric should i buy? im totally new to sewing actually your tutorials inspired me to try making my own clothes
I think you'd have to use a larger square to begin with because when you cut out the larger waist, you'll loose more length off of the skirt.
Great video as always! Thanks for including the fix for the circumference issue!
Will you please do a video about your sewing machine and over locker and how/where you got them. And also maybe thrift fabric haul?!
I'm going to make this as soon as I find the right fabric! I can't wait, thanks for the great tutorial!
Annika,....it's twelve,...I need sleep but ya posted so..
reminds me a bit of when I wrap a jacket around my waist
HEY i saw your diy circle skirt and i couldnt stop watching your videos, hands down, you're a talented human being :3
My mom used this to make a skirt for my school uniform and it's definitely my favorite skirt out of the ones she made. She also made a circle skirt from your video on it as well!
I know this should annoy me but I can't find out what accent you have an live and America, I think you do with the currency. So where is your accent from?
I'm from Australia, it's australian haha
For next make thrift buy can you do a black see through lace dress inspired by Frances Bean Cobain or a velvet grunge skirt, thx
I like your skirt much better
I just made this following your tutorial and it turned out really well! Thank you 😊
You must have the best wardrobe, anytime you see something you like you can make it right away!
I don't even know how to use a sewing machine XD
+DoodleDrawer CopicsPapermate hauh?
voidr0se7 I don’t even have one.
trying to check out the merch but the site really doesn't like me. Anyone else having issues with Chrome?
Hm. The site seems to be down rn :\ damn.
Contacting them, trying to get them to get their site working again! haha
Annika Victoria Awesome! :) I'm mostly just glad it wasn't just something wrong with my browser :D Will check back later :)
+Kalliste aw, thank you! haha yeah it's nice to know when everybody else is having the same problem. I hope it starts working again soon!
+Kalliste i'm on firefox and the site is giving me a problem as well
gosh darn it this looks so fun. I really like the idea of adding things to the four corners of the skirt, like beads, pom-poms, bells, old earrings... :3
Another clothing item to add to the bucket list!! MTB is very informative and I can always learn something from it! 😊thank you
i'm going away at the start of october and i have pretty much no clothes to take so i'm compiling a playlist of your videos to make and wear on holiday! thanks annika!
I've been using this to add a easy skirt to my t shirts. It makes a really comfortable dress for bad pain days. :) Thanks for the video.
The other day I watched everyone of
Your videos and you inspired me to go out and buy a sewing machine so I did that yesterday thanks for giving me a new hobby!
+shauna forster That's so exciting!! You're more than welcome :)
I'm getting an overlocker for my birthday (January - SO FAR AWAY) and I'm stoked. I loved this square circle (squircle?) skirt!
Squircle!! Oh my gosh I'm so calling it that from now on. Somehow that's like.. The cutest word ever ☺️
this is so cute! I'm totally going to try it. I love the make thrift buy series!
Finished making this skirt today! :D Thanks Annika!
I'm so jealous Annika. I swear you can pull any item of clothing of and look fabulous. ❤️❤️
Just made this😊, it was very easy and turned out really good!👍🏻. Thank you for this tutorial❤️
I love the little sign you have in the back its so cute. and I gotta so give this a try
I love everything you make so much. I used to sew, but I was never all that good. I still love watching these though!
I've found some lovely fabric that I've been trying to justify buying, so I'm totally going to buy it and (hopefully) make this!
Good luck :)
Finally i can find a channel that i can understand!! Gosh, now understand how to do it and it works, thank you so much girl.
Im not a girl who loves skirt (im a jeans girl) but i totally love the skirt you made, and your diy was awesome. Like and suscribe right now ♥ Saludos desde Argentina!!!
I don't know why I've never thought of doing this with left over fabric - I've always thought that it would look strange being straight hem and not curved, but, omg so much easier to hem! So cool!
I just finished mine! It’s red orange gingham! I actually gave it a dark blue waistband and used a spare snap I had instead of a zipper.
i made this skirt and i amm absolutely in love with it!
thanks for this :) this is the only diy blog I've found which makes the instructions look easy :)
You are honestly a genius. It never ceases to amaze me!
😊😊😊☺️
I did this diy with my mom and it turned out great. Thank you so much
i love your merch!! especially the orca print swimsuit oh goodness *o*
+Natasha Rose Thank you Natasha!
Totally made this for myself and I love it. Thank you for the amazing guide.
I saw a picture of a skirt like this where the back was longer than the front, so I'm going to atempt to make one like that. I also found an interestingly woven fabric that I love, but I can't decide what side to use as the right side. But I absolutely love this tutorial!
Yours looks better! I absolutely love it!
Woow! This is so nice! Great video:)
And I love the socks you're wearing in the end:D
Oh, I think this will be perfect for my next cosplay! Especially if I layer it up with a couple of different lengths in different materials with all the corners slightly offset, it should be perfect for a fantasy/forest fairy/wood elf kind of vibe!
I love all your tururials thank you for posting. I have learned a lot from you!
I'm going to try this and a regular circle skirt before making the PVC one, you're the best
Turned out great!
Such a cute skirt and great tutorial! Surelly going to try it!
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH OKAY AND I LOVE THE QUALITY CONTENT ON YOUR VIDEOS OKAY AND OMG I LOVE YOU ILY ILY
