*whisper* making the waist too large means you can put in an elasticated waist, plus the elasticated waist means the excess doesn't just hang at the hips!. Handkerchief skirts/square circle skirts are the love of my life (I wore 7 layers of different chiffon and organza skirts I'd made in different colours out one day to cheer myself up, I felt like a fairy!) and making them elasticated means they are so much more versatile. Options I've loved for the "cheaty"(/quick and simple) waist band are:
1.Bomber jacket elastic. So simple, not the prettiest, but comfy and so simple, you just sew along the non-stretched, gathered edge and BOOM... or BOMB, depending on how you feel in jubilation.
    2. ribbed edging for sweaters. I put some elastic through the centre for extra hold, but it works amazingly and looks very clean.
I know no-one's going to have read this far, but please try this. In tartan for this look, in chiffon or organza (semi-transparent floaty fabrics) for layering or showing off your gorgeous underwear (situation permitting!), jersey (t-shirt) fabric for the ultimate comfy, flowy, easy skirt and not having to hem (depending on the thickness of the fabric). Put pretty beads on the 4 corners that sparkle when you move for an ornate look, anything, these are so fun and really easy.
Try it with a little square of paper first to work out what you're doing with the waist, I promise you can do it.

Ooooh thank you! I actually think the waist of the original skirt was elasticated, too (after looking more closely at the pictures on the product page!). And it's always quicker/easier not adding a zipper ;) good for if my weight fluctuates too (which it does) - the skirt will still fit! Thanks for all of the help! Gosh I love UA-cam - half of my sewing knowledge comes from awesome comments like these :)

suz Okay, I know this is late, but I just had to say thank you for this advice! And thank you to Miss Annika Victoria for this awesome tutorial of course!
I just finished my skirt, only I actually tried sewing mine with an elastic waistband casing as per your suggestion. I was honestly in a little over my head, but after recruiting my mom to help, we got it done hahaha.
I'm so happy with how it turned out, and I can't wait to start wearing it! :D

Just finished this skirt, it's 5:06 in the morning and I watched, rewind, and fast forwarded this video 50 times. It came out good a few minor adjustments will do. Even though on the outside of the skirt you can see the thread. I also did you mistake just so I wouldn't get mixed up. I absolutely loved this video.

Annika! I was recently on your blog and you wondered how to go about storing fabrics and saving space, I once struggled with this problem also but there's an easy fix! Take cardboard and cut out a rectangle (I make mine 7 by 7 inches long) and simply wrap your fabric around it! I didn't have a twitter nor a blog account and reaching out through Instagram...my comment probably would have been washed away by the loads of your amazing fans ^-^ hope this helped ;)

I just made this, after drooling over it for ages. I didn't have a big piece of fabric so I cut 9 15x15 squares from a bunch of old tee shirts, sewed them into a 45x45 (ish) square, and started from there! Thanks so so much. Your channel is what's inspired me to teach myself to sew!

I've been interested in textiles a while now especially with school and I decided to make a skirt because the next level in my textiles was clothes which was the main reason I went into textiles and thanks to you I've now been able to make two skirts already one didn't go quite to plan but it fits and the other one - this one - avoided the main issue of last time-the half circle skirt- so I'd like to thank you for allowing me to take this next step and you've really inspired me xx

Thank you Annika, I have been seeing these all over different stores and I was really wanting to do something like this rather than buy an expensive one these days. I even saw one store actually adding leggings under the skirt sewed in, and said "I still remember I have some fabric I can use to make the skirt itself. But thank you so much for showing how you made it along with some of the links you provided. It really helped out and got my confidence on making skirts up.

gosh darn it this looks so fun. I really like the idea of adding things to the four corners of the skirt, like beads, pom-poms, bells, old earrings... :3

I've been using this to add a easy skirt to my t shirts. It makes a really comfortable dress for bad pain days. :) Thanks for the video.

I don't know why I've never thought of doing this with left over fabric - I've always thought that it would look strange being straight hem and not curved, but, omg so much easier to hem! So cool!

I just finished mine! It’s red orange gingham! I actually gave it a dark blue waistband and used a spare snap I had instead of a zipper.

I saw a picture of a skirt like this where the back was longer than the front, so I'm going to atempt to make one like that. I also found an interestingly woven fabric that I love, but I can't decide what side to use as the right side. But I absolutely love this tutorial!

Oh, I think this will be perfect for my next cosplay! Especially if I layer it up with a couple of different lengths in different materials with all the corners slightly offset, it should be perfect for a fantasy/forest fairy/wood elf kind of vibe!
