@@thevigilantone5902 yes and no. In the end of blackswordsman arc you realize that griffith is the villain, but you dont know why or anything. So in a sense Miura spoils you that griffith is the villain on purpuse, because you are looking at the golden age arc through very different lense than if you didnt know he was the villain.
But, you definitely spoiled yourself a little by seeing some of why he is a villain, but dont worry. The interesting part is not because of rape or anything, so you havent spoiled yourself on much really. Dont worry, keep reading.

Berserk really has the most amazing and detailed artwork. It really is my favorite manga. It's sooo brutal but also brutally real if you know what I mean. Like it explores the darkest parts of people not even just demons.

Beserk is one of those rare manga that I don't mind being on hiatus all the damn time. Like even if only three chapters are released a year, the artwork is always so damn beautiful
Agreed, I can understand taking a break from this intense manga once in a while, even now it's fine since he was helping his assistants with the new manga duranki, so it's safe to assume he still wants to draw and do manga, at least to get berserk done

I read the whole series of berserk in 4 weeks.
8 hours a day 7 days a week. Was the best covid-19 summer exploration of reading i've ever had.
When I first read it I had to take a couple day break after the eclipse happened, I needed time to process that cus it was so fucked. I didn’t know any spoilers going in either all I knew was the main characters name was guts. I don’t even know how you’d go about finishing this series, it’s not like guts is ever gonna be able to match up physically with griffith. I genuinely think there won’t be a final battle between them at all I think Griffith will be defeated in a unique way compared to how the villain goes down in most stories

Dude, I'm so glad for this video. I'm reading and I'm about halfway through the Golden Age arc. The character writing is TOO GOOD. Also, I absolutely agree about this series showing and reflecting upon both the darkest pits of human depravity and also the most luminous points of human connection and its beautiful and sublime.

I'm using this quarentine to FINALLY read through berserk. I've been meaning to do it for years but finally got started a few months ago. It's very heavy but an amazing read. I've only watched the older anime and parts of the newer movies but it's time I fully engage with the sacred texts!

I would argue the '97 anime is worth your time as a person new to berserk simply because you get a feel for what characters sound like, especially for main characters.
What would you do after watching 97? When would you start In the Manga? Is there something Else to watch before reading?
@@thomyboy3219 I know this is old but the desire for more Berserk never dies. If you google Berserk Redux you can find another version. Full disclosure though the majority of it does use the 2016 anime. What it is is a fan that took the 97 anime, the 3 movies, and the 2016 anime and then edited and spliced things together to make it as close to the manga as possible. It can be a little jarring sometimes when it swaps between completely different art styles but you get used to it. There are 10 parts averaging 1&1/2 to 2 hours each and it actually starts in chronological order so it puts the golden age before black swordman then it ends around the moment they meet the goofy pirate. I still think overall the 97 anime is best animated Berserk but sometimes I really have the desire to see the story after the golden age in motion even if it's not done as well. Thankfully the music from 2016's anime was still top tier. After that though, yeah the manga is the only place left to go.

@@thomyboy3219 I had watched a few anime but never read a full manga before berserk either and for me berserk was even harder since I really prefer colored pictures when possible lol. And yeah after the ending of the 97 anime I really didn't feel like I had much choice I *needed* to know what happens next and it did not disappoint.
The manga basically feels like everything you love about the story with WAY more content even within the parts you've already seen so sooner or later it will pull you in. ;)
You know what might be an interesting video idea? Examining the evolution of setting and structure in long-running series to keep them fresh. All of the series could be ones you've reviewed.
Berserk evolves in that it goes from a dark, edgy revenge story (Black Swordsman) to a fairly low-magic, drama-and-politics-heavy story (the Golden Age Arc), and then slowly worked its way into a high fantasy with the Astral Merge.
One Piece evolves in that it has different islands, so each arc is a totally new adventure. Plus, some of the arcs delve into new plot layouts, like a prison break in Impel Down, or a war in Marineford.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure evolves in that it has an anthology style format, so every few years it changes its protagonist, villain, supporting cast, time period and genre. This allows Araki to examine Godfather-style mafia stories, murder mysteries, westerns, etc.
Hunter x Hunter evolves in that Togashi is willing to throw out all narrative conventions. For example, his treatment of Gon is unlike how other Shonen authors would handle it, and even after Gon is out of the picture Togashi kept the story going.

I think the best thing about Berserk is how legendary it is in the manga world. Even people who have not read it have heard about it's legendary status, either from friends or other youtubers. That should speak for itself about the quality of the manga, and where it stands in the Hierarchy of manga.
Ok, I agree with you a little bit with what you said about the 97 anime, but you cannot deny that it's soundtrack by Susumu Hirasawa makes Berserk 10x better.
I have already had this series on my list of manga/anime to read/watch. Along with Fist of the North Star and Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

Bro the ‘97 anime is 🔥🔥🔥 watched it for the first time back in January and fell in love. The dark and mature tone has such a great charm to it. The movie trilogy is awesome too

Just finished Volume 20 so I'm halfway.
I really like it. The writing for the characters is usually very good, the development is great for characters like Guts and Griffith, the art and detail is always beautiful, it definitely does not hold back but isn't overly edgy as it has fun characters like Puck Judeau and Isidro, the villains are always messed up and always memorable and yet miura always finds a way to make them understandable (The Count, Rosine and even Zodd), character designs are fantastic especially the five Godhand.
Only issue I have is the fight scenes especially in the golden age with all the War fluff. There is always too much going on i think and I can never tell for sure what's going on.
And Casca was really annoying at first. Did not like her at all until she became friendly with Guts (which didn't last long)

i am making a manga that is inspired by berserk,when i read berserk,it broke the line for me,i started drawing for a year and now i think i am ready to start actually drawing it after writing 100 pages worth of script(not even done)at first i wanted to make something that will please HxH and BERSERK fans but over time it became something more,the first page is half way done as of 1 day of work,by the end of this month i will post chapter 1 or even 2 chapters,thanks for reading,have a nice day

Okay I just finished reading the series for the first time after hearing you and Dritzzt praise it so highly. After having done so I must say I feel empty inside. Like I know I've just experienced peak story telling and everything else I read will be down hill from here. Everything from the world building, the characters, the story, the art, I repeat the fucking art is incredible. And Guts, man this guy has solidified himself as my favorite protag ever. Honestly I wish it would have taken another ten years from now for me to have discovered the series. Perhaps the story will have been concluded by then but alas I must join in the painful waits between chapters I've heard this series is known for.

I think you should read read Chainsawman GLRs. It’s really good and not enough people are talking about it. Eccentric characters that all get subtle development, the king of shounen MCs, mystery that keeps you hooked from the jump, and a balls to the wall plot that will keep you guessing what will come next. It’s dark and has crazy likable characters in the same vein as something like Dorohedoro, has existential dread, and a plot that would completely not make sense without context like Steel Ball Run, but makes sense in the moment like a fever dream. Amazing stuff.
I can see the 97 series be off-putting for some modern anime loves but I love the 90s anime aesthetic.
Plenty of people would disagree with you about Isidro, Schierke is a better example of a not annoying child character IMO.

I’ve never understood why or how people think berserk falls off after conviction I think the following arcs are on that same level of quality personally and a lot of the best moments of the series are contained in the later half

I’m not sure about the king of dark fantasy overall, but in manga it’s up there with Made in Abyss for the best dark fantasy in the medium.
Overall, I think there are better examples in books like the Gentleman Bastard Series, or the First Law books in that universe that are all amazing to read through.
Behind those two and Sandman, Berserk and Made in Abyss are right behind in my opinion. Then behind those comes stories like the Fables comics, B.P.R.D. series from Hellboy, Mark Lawrence novels, etc.
But, if anyone is looking for the best dark sci-if, everyone needs to read Tokyo Ghost at least one time in their life. Best comic book of all time.
Can buster call-esque requests be made for you to cover stuff on the New World Review, if so I'd really like to see a video detailing the importance of Puck in helping Guts stay human and sane in that key period where he's been journeying by himself.
Studio MADHOUSE should pick up Berserk and adapt it as soon as possible, even though HxH 2011 level of production would be needed to do Miura s work justice.

Why has this video of yours not been suggested to me... Berserk is my fave piece of fiction and yet someone whom I watch both GrandLine and DudeInARoom somehow his discussion of my favorite manga was never suggested to me... algorithm working as intended.
The word I'd describe Berserk with is HUMAN. I hate stories that shield the reader from the human side of things. The true honest portrayal of a land besieged by crusaders and faith addicts.
Depicting brutal acts of bloody violence and torture and rape and savagery beyond even the most sick of minds.
I watch a Saw film and I sit down and read a chapter of Berserk, it's night and day. One is artificial insanity while the other is pure insanity incarnate.
Ripping the main characters loves and friends away to torture them and then set them on a two year killing spree full of... well... BERSERK.
It challenges your perspective and I genuinely am disheartened by readers who condemn Guts' relationship with Casca as simply lust.
Spoilers:
SHE LOVES HIM. Just the fact she lost her mind and his need for comfort. His uncertainty and want for her to see him as him again. It breaks my heart. So when he forces himself on her and sees her terrified. It shows the honest reality behind the situation.
There is no peace.
There is no happiness.
There is no comfort.
Only bloody sacrifice and uncertainty.
Berserk asks for no quarter, and offers NONE!
