Spired umm...I have a question...where'd you read the manga? Its because I've been reading Berserk and I didn't even know the website I was reading had wrong translations...
Do Chapter 90: The Sprint imo one of the most emotive and heart wrenching chapters in berserk. Gut's reaction in that chapter has a lot of parallels to Caska's in the most recent chapter
Wow. All Gambino did constantly was break him down. Godo built him back up after breaking him down. If he was raised under Godo following the death of Gambino, Guts would be twice as strong as he is now. Both strong inside and out.
This chapter really emphasizes how human Guts is. Most anime protags that are edgy don't have anybody that calls them on their shit. Rule of Cool overrides a lot. Berserk addresses the mentality of pushing people away and how trauma drives people insane. Godot basically slapped Guts and told him to get his shit together. That he was acting really stupid, and he still had people who needed him. Which was exactly what he needed before he slipped over the deep end. The best moments in the series come when the story addresses just how fucked up Guts is as a person.
And from that Guts began to change for the better. HE Fucking SAW Griffith in his reality. He saw that he could kill him but instead he resolved himself to save Casca
I knew you were familiar, even before I started watching your videos I felt that I’ve seen you somewhere before; now I know why, it’s because you placed a comment here on Spired’s video! How cool
Although I am not fully caught up what I like the most about this chapter is how it teaches you about revenge is often a self Destructive path one of the many heart aches is leaving your love ones behind guts was thinking very selfishly about his revenge and left casca behind to make matters worse she is at a point in her life in which she needs him the most yet he still left her
@@waterpillar1977 it's concepts like that which truly drive the rest of the Conviction Arc, and frankly the rest of the series. Idk if you're at the Millennium Falcon Arc, so I want get into spoilers. But ill say, at the beginning of the arc, Guts needs to make a big decision on whether or not he goes along with his murder spree or stay with Casca and try to get her somewhere safe. I truly believe that without the Cracks in the Blade chapter, Guts might have picked the wrong decision. Cracks in the Blade is the foundation of what Guts would become. It's the most important chapter in Berserk since that of the Eclipse chapters to me because without this conversation with Godo, Guts' whole life would be vengeful.
I always felt like Godo was a reflection of Guts, just the older wiser version- Godo was trying to save Guts from going down the same tormented road he once traveled; but, Godo knew it was inevitable that Guts path was already decided- so he gave him some wisdom, perspective, and maybe.. just maybe Guts could be different than he is. I loved Godo, man, I felt a sting when he passed.
@@rodrigo-tj1gf obviously they have differences but listen to what godo is trying to say, basically he worked all his life for nothing because he just wanted to loose himself and not pay attention to anything. Both Godo and guts avoid their hardest struggles in life but since godo is old he knows what his mistake was and wanted to impart his point of view from someone who has similar personality
To me this was the most important part of Berserk. The beginning of true change in Guts. The real theme of Berserk is not just grim dark or gore its not even nihilistic. Godo acknowledges the Pain and Trauma Guts went through but calls him a coward because Guts refuses to confront that pain in the form of Casca. Ultimately Miura’s message is not one of righteousness or justice its about realizing whats truly important, Sharing the suffering with the ones you love, and that in a world so terribly cruel the hopeful ones are the ones who are truly strong.
That's a load of shit and you know it. Nothing matter, nothing is worth holding on to because in the end, its all for nothing. Humans are just lumps of meat and should just live entirely by their own impulses. You're only fooling yourself if you think otherwise.

It's not the sexiest chapter in the series ( _Wounds 1 & 2!_ ), but it's certainly the most introspective. Godo's dressing down is probably the closet thing to an "Intervention" that Guts gets. Like a father.
No one ever talks about the regression of Guts after the eclipse. He regressed mentally back to when he was an aimless mercenary, the story that cascas break is visual whereas Guts was hidden under his facade. They both broke but Gutd having something outside Griffith was what kept him as just cracks and not shattered.
Though he chose to act on his rage and hatred, it is still almost impossible to blame him for making such a choice. Guts is still human, afterall. He had almost lost, what seperates him from the beings responsible for his suffering. The synthesis between philosophies of individualism and psychology, in contrast to determinism as the base of the setting, is what makes Berserk so beautiful to me.
That’s what it usually takes to bring someone back from the brink. Hence “He who hunts monsters must insure he does not become one”. Throughout the Black Swordsman arc Guts was no better that the apostles he put down, just as cruel and the only thing separating him from them was Guts hated the apostles.
Father so this is where you have been for 10 000 years? Is this the true origine of our inner anger? Is it just because the last chapter was about Griffith and not that we have failed the Emperor?
@@phucyu532 A "monster" is defined as a creature we dont understand nor can fight. A man can be a monster, and guts was slowly becoming one. When nitzche made that statement he was refering to the mental turmoil of comiting evil to stop evil. The killing and murder would eat away at "heroes" till they lose their purpouse or doubt it. Just like guts. Hell all the negativity formed a raging monster inside of him!
@@phucyu532 His actions made an apostle burn an entire city and he didn't care, he killed innocent people, killed (transformed) children. He was pretty bad in that period of the story.
Chapters around character development are my favourite in Berserk. I prefer an entire chapter of Guts reflecting about his life than just slaying apostles. I love how Erica verbally owned Guts about leaving Casca behind. In just one phrase she destroyed Black Swordman persona and purpose reminding him about his main goal being to protect Casca, not his revenge against Griffith.
I literally just finished reading this chapter again.. It's still so powerful, and goes with Berserk's legacy of moments that hold more weight and impact than The Eclipse. Rest in Peace Godo, thank you for everything Old Man.
I really love that even though we want Guts to thriumph, the series never treated him like a hero. He has done a lot of bad things, and has commited a lot of errors. He's no hero, not even a villain; he's just human, a broken human being who wants to be happy for once in his life.
Just bringing up the name of the chapter already makes me want to cry. It's awesome how it's an old dying man that stands up to Guts edgyness and not only survives but gets under his skin and makes HIM question just what the hell he's doing with all that rage. ....Just eleven chapters after Beast of Darkness.... In regards to what would happen if Guts never stopped the Apostle Hunt,i don't think it would have gone on forever. Guts would sooner or later hit again the breaking point he reached in chapter 118("Beast of Darkness"), he would fall but wouldn't get up,his rage and determination simply wouldn't be enough for the job anymore and he would get unceremoniously killed by an apostle. It would be a matter of time until Guts' sorrow caught up with him. It's interesting to think the roll he would end up on during the Holy Demon War though. Would he fight on either sides? would he try to murder both of them? how long until they overwhelmed him? At the end of the night,Guts still was a human mortal man waiting for the sunset.
Good comment, but it does get on my nerves when people associate Berserk with edgyness, or even just Guts. Black Swordsman Arc is the closest arc to being edgy and even that is just dark fantasy like the rest of Berserk.
You'd be insane not to be pissed-off about reality. I suffer from anhedonia and bipolar disorder. I'm more familiar with rage / suffering / stress than most. Let me tell you something: it's all a cope. There's only so much dignity you can muster in choosing your own madness. Eventually, it'll lose its effect.
@@gutssnakeeater3875 i used edgyness because it was the easiest way to refer to Guts Black Swordsman persona, honestly i associate Berserk with it's title of Strongest Fantasy Comic, it's a really moving series in all directions, when it's sad it's really sad, when it's dark it's gruesomely dark and when it's happy, man, it's incredible.
@@Dunge0n exactly. I don't get why people think Guts would keep going on with the Apostle Rampage, eventually he would lose his drive and something would get the best of him.

People talk about the Golden Age being peak Berserk, and while that is phenomenal, I personally enjoy a lot of the early Conviction Chapters even moreso.
Godo’s critique of Guts starts with something you’ll also see in Vinland Saga: why don’t you just run away? When Canute asks Thorfinn at the farm what he’ll do, he remarks that’s he’ll just run away. Of course we know Guts can’t just run away, but that’s beside the point. Askeladd and Godo give Thorfinn and Guts the same advice: drop the hatred and vengeance-seeking; seek peace and protect those who you love.
Every time I watch your videos it shocks me how much subtext I missed - or, rather, subconsciously absorbed while utterly missing it on a conscious level . It's truly amazing how deep a seemingly straightforward story about a guy on a revenge quest with big dumb sword can be in the hands of a thoughtful writer, and all without being obnoxiously in-your-face with the presentation.
Pretty hard to type this through the mist in my eyes but I'm sure as hell gonna try..... This chapter, this entire conversation was so, mystifying. I hated what happened to the Hawks and I was in agreement with Guts' mission for revenge. But when Godo reminds Guts, reminded me, the reader, that the one thing Guts found irreplaceable, he abandoned in order to feed his hatred, I didn't know what to feel...It was one of the many moments where I truly felt like I was in Guts' shoes. Hatred shouldn't stop you from being with the ones you love. And I'm glad Guts finally learned that before Godo passed. :')
I saw the Rickert video, but it still makes me feel so happy to see him. He hasn't had as many panels as anyone else in the manga, except maybe Silat and his crew, but you can still see how well he's grown. He makes me proud.
When you watch these videos just to confirm how good Berserk is XD EDIT: Great video, your videos are so interesting and enthralling even though I've alredy read these chapters several times.
"sparkles from the sword" is my personal favorite (walt whitman reference yeah), all those chapters that are focused on thought in this universe angled towards survival are really good, miura is a master of balance.
I can't share this to my friends who are fellow strugglers yet since they aren't up to date and I can't spoil it to them but hearing a contemplation on this key chapter and it's relevance to future keeps me coming back especially on this day
@@luciusvalentine5722 why do we still use that old picture of mirua, he literally doesn't step out of his youth dungeon for years playing idolm@ster and occasionally drawing
I think the comparison of Guts' actions to Ricket is a tad unfair, considering Ricket did not go through the horrors of eclipse (he also didn't see Zodd or Wlyad) nor did he witness all of his friends get slaughtered by monsters like it was some sort of a game. The dog apostole which Guts overwhelmed and killed - did not give him enough horror to show just how terrible eclipse was. It was a monster stronger than anything he's ever witnessed sure, but he also witnessed it's defeat. Guts had witnessed his and all of his friends defeat - and it all happened so fast that one couldn't even process everything properly. To Ricket just like Guts said in this chapter, Band of the Hawk simply died - he knows nothing more, and the only two options he has are to stay with the last two members of the band or find out what happened to BotH. Which again for him the only two people that could answer that question were Guts and Casca (if she regained her memory). That's why I'm sure we can all agree that while Ricket did the right thing by staying behind and looking after Casca there's also the fact that his lack of knowledge about the horrors witnessed by Guts and Casca left him with no other options. Whereas Guts' pain led him on a path of revenge, against forces that he was unable to win against previously. We've also had a very similar scenario when Guts fights Zodd for the first time - where he charges into the fort on his own due to this fellow party members getting slaughtered against the opponent that is far stronger than them. I'd think that in those situations it wasn't himself that he was thinking about but minimizing the risk to those around him - he always dived in head first into battle. And just like he did in Zodd fight, he launched himself into his revenge quest for his lost band members and Casca's pain - the only difference was that there was no one to pull him back from it the second time - he was hunting his and Casca's enemies because otherwise they'd be the ones being hunted. Never relizing that just like with Griffith during Zodd fight he didn't have to be alone and could rely on someone else. As well as he lacked understanding of something that Godo told him of, and that's getting over the pain with Casca. Even if Guts succeeded in his revenge, Casca's pain would still be present - and that's something he overlooked (and we are seeing the results of that pain in the new chapters). That being said, the conversation with Godo is incredibly introspective and I think it helped to enlarge those cracks that you've mentioned in his blackswordsman persona - leading to him growing as a character and realising what's he should be doing. Also you've hit the nail on the head with the mentions about Guts' body language and visible changes from his black swordsman persona. I think this chapter really showed his stress, worry and fear really well. Oh boy, have I written a bit.
Rickert eventually admits and acknowledges this though on the hill of swords, he breaks down and is incredibly apologetic and guilty when talking to Guts because after finding out what really happened he realizes that Guts has had to deal with the burden of the eclipse and its aftermath all alone while Rickert only vaguely understands the atrocities that occurred and was able to heal in a comparatively cozy and safe environment. I feel that the story definitely doesn't make the mistake of vilifying Guts for his previous choices; moreso just contextualizing them and showing him that while his actions are understandable they are not sustainable.
the chapters with godo are by far the most personally touching chapters, and really give you insight into guts. His monologue to himself in the sparks chapter (c48) after godo opens up about himself is probably my favourite part, but this chapter is a close second
Makes you wonder what would’ve happened if Guts had stayed and mourned with Godo, Casca and company. Maybe he even would’ve been able to help Casca work through her own trauma
Yes, I've always held this chapter in very high regard as well; Godot dying/their last meeting, his harsh words of wisdom, Guts' introspection, Guts' coming "home" in a sense, to the only loved ones he has left. And yeah the blacksmith analogies are pretty clever as well. Nice vid/analysis 👍
The final chapters of lost children as well as these ones are some of the most hope filled while at the same time sad chapters in all of the story and I love it
Gotoh is the best mentor Guts could have! It's rare to see Guts respect someone as much as he respected Gotoh. Just an idea. Could you talk about the rescue Griffith "arc", that has been skipped in both Berserk adaptations. Where we see both Judeau and Pippin in action against the bakiraka squad and Guts vs Wyald. It seems like the same case as the Black Swordsman arc. Where people just consider it filler.
I wouldnt consider Wyalds arc filler, I see it more of a power level test to show what Guts will go up against and how even his best wasn't enough to kill just 1 apostle and is why he needed the dragonslayer
@@bophadesknutz7798 I've always seen it as a step to show how much he'd improved since his fight with Zodd, who was wrecking him rather handily even before transforming, and here Gutts manages to take down his first real demon, even post-transformation. (and as far as the pecking order goes, Wyld is actually up there. He's around the same power level as most of Gutt's post-eclipse apostle fights are, pre-berserker armor)
There ain't a Berserk fan alive that could watch this and not think Cracks in the Blade is one of the best chapters. Your style and analysis could probably convince me of any chapter. Good stuff
One of my only issues with berserk when I begun reading it was Erica and Gudo they randomly appeared it felt like I missed a chapter or something. Never imagined how important they would be to bringing guts back.
They did not so much appear randomly,as that Guts needed a blacksmith at that point and Skull Knight with his awesome glimpse into causality brought him to the best one yet!Gudo forged him into the Black Swordsman(even before he met Guts)and, in his twilight, offered him some advice about his path onward and what he should value, whatever the machinations of destiny may entail. He fits perfectly in the narrative. And his introduction is not more sudden than the one with Skull Knight.
Johannes Fotiadis but like when they meet guts is like hey Erica hows it going again. And hi blacksmith nice to see you again. When we had ni prior knowledge of their existences.
Am I missing something here? In volume 10 Guts is talking about how he went to mountains and met them there and was spend time training there. And sparks. That was good enough character introduction.
I really wonder if the name of "Godo" is a coincidence for refering him as "God". Miura never does something out of the blue. There's a french book called "Waiting for Godo" (en attendant Godo in french) and it's a metaphor for saying that they were trying to find God.
I want to comment that when Guts drove Jill away from her, is because he legitimately thought it would be in her best interests to not allow her to follow him. He is branded with the curse and every night demons go after him trying to devour him, and puts everyone around him in danger, for example the old man and girl who tried to give him a ride on their chariot ended up dead because of the skeletons. And Guts at that point wasn't prepared to go out of his way to protect someone. So when he showed the darkness to Jill he really meant it that she should be prepared to such a horrible journey ahead. He only learns to protect others while fighting to protect Casca every night. And is only then that he needs to rely on others to help him protect her.
Wow amazing analysis, and love sharing the same passions for Berserk. I’ve read this part twice already in the past, but the depth to this really nailed it for me.
My absolute favorite chapter. Not only because it brings Guts down and "breaks" him in a good way, because you need to break open old wounds so they can heal... It also is, in my opinion, the most important chapter to bridge the Black Swordsman Arc with all other ones. Early Guts is such a wildly different character to both the golden age and even lost children Guts. We didn't know about anyone or anything back then and just thought that Guts is some edgy know-it-all with some dark past, too edgy for us to know. But everything about that was just a wall, something he built up to hide his own fears. A wall not broken down by massive monsters, but by a small child and an old man. A lesser author would've just shoved aside the Black Swordsman Arc and made it that Guts is just now like that. Miura however used this as an amazing way to slowly get rid of the edge and turn back to the Guts we grew to love. You didn't talk about it, but after the chapter, Guts thinks about if he did the same mistake again. If he left the people that were most important to him again for some goal he didn't even really understand. But then he stands up and says that this time, it WILL be different. Black Swordsman Guts would've just smirked and ran away to fight more monsters. But this Guts knows that this might be his final chance to save Casca. Something that comes to play again at the end of the Conviction arc. Man, I just fucking love Berserk.
@Spired !! I freaking LOVE these videos. I became obsessed with Berserk over quarentine and can't get enough content. I don't know anyone in real life who reads the manga so watching your videos lets me experience the story in a deeper way. Keep up the great work!!
FINALLY! Someone talking about this chapter. It really left a mark on me when I first read it. It works as a great development for Guts' character, to show how he really feels inside after all he's been through.
I also really enjoyed this story line. Godo is truly a legendary black smith. My theory is that in the future up coming apocalypse. It is gonna be the God hand vs the horse men. We have already seen 2 out of the 4 possible horse men. In early 2021 I hope.
This was a well thought-out piece on an underrated yet important chapter in Guts' journey. You've caught the nuances of each panel's beautifully drawn art, from the emotions in each character's faces to the significance of Godo's haunting last words. You've just won yourself a new subscriber- keep it up man!
I just realized the symbolism of Guts leaving his sword to be fixed and going one night to think and face his demons without it, the sword (nicked and cracked) pretty much symbolized himself at the time, with all the cracks to his mental state, and after he gets it the next day, new and reforged, he also reforged the "blade of his soul" with a new resolve to look after Casca, basically making him leave an entirely new man Another realization is that him going one night without his sword and he feels powerless, and his demons are at full view for him to face, as said in the video, for the first time he is actually thinking about his life, as his sword was always his protection to hide those things away to avoid facing them. A bit late for realization, and probably a common one, but I'll at least keep this here for future me to remember Tldr: Guts is a lot more like a sword than I thought, and they have a relationship almost like it was an important character

Godo acted towards guts in the same way he did with metal, with blades, reforming, molding, but still, the blade got its nickles. I love this manga so much. Thanks for the content, much appreciated.
The artwork in the last panel in the video is beautiful, not sure if it was meant to seem like the light from a window is a sword finally coming down to end the blacksmiths life, but that's what I'm going with.
Amazing analysis. I also loved the shots of Rickert and Erica downstairs over hearing Godo's conversation with Guts. It's that scolding conversation that should have been private but wasn't.

@@ChaplainRaziel01 bit of an overstatement. The apostles were the true monsters, Guts was just pretending to be one.
@@phucyu532
A "monster" is defined as a creature we dont understand nor can fight.

This chapter helped me get out of a bad mindset a few years ago, I just want to thank miura for that because I may not be here because of berserk

Came here after hearing the death of Kentaro Miura. This is one of my favorite chapters in berserk. Rest in Peace Mr Miura
RIP Greatest Mangaka of All Time
I really love that even though we want Guts to thriumph, the series never treated him like a hero.
Godo is the man who finally defeated the Black Swordsman.
Basically Godo kinda "reforged" Guts's heart & re-purpose him to save their future (Caska & Guts).

Me
People talk about the Golden Age being peak Berserk, and while that is phenomenal, I personally enjoy a lot of the early Conviction Chapters even moreso.
It's truly amazing how deep a seemingly straightforward story about a guy on a revenge quest with big dumb sword can be in the hands of a thoughtful writer, and all without being obnoxiously in-your-face with the presentation.
amen!
I found Berserk when news broke out on youtube a week back, finished the 90s anime and the entire manga in a week, one hell of a manga, #1 for me
I saw the Rickert video, but it still makes me feel so happy to see him. He hasn't had as many panels as anyone else in the manga, except maybe Silat and his crew, but you can still see how well he's grown. He makes me proud.

Oh boy, have I written a bit.
but really I thing guts pain is more more that's of casca
Volume 17 as a whole is a masterpiece of atmosphere and reflection honestly.
I actually saved the two images that Godo quotes hate and sadness. This was back in highschool for me but I love seeing this surface suddenly.

That fight wasn’t filler. That’s where guys started noticing that the apostles where drawn to him and Griffith.
When we had ni prior knowledge of their existences.
my only issue with the series is that it took em 15 years to get off a boat
Am I missing something here? In volume 10 Guts is talking about how he went to mountains and met them there and was spend time training there. And sparks. That was good enough character introduction.
@@Fang0v3rFang you skip chapters guts knew them before the eclipse. Go back and read
this chapter seriously doesn't get enough love. underrated as fuuuuuuck
I really wonder if the name of "Godo" is a coincidence for refering him as "God". Miura never does something out of the blue. There's a french book called "Waiting for Godo" (en attendant Godo in french) and it's a metaphor for saying that they were trying to find God.
beard and white hair tho
This chapter helped me overcome long lingering trauma from my younger years. Thank you Guts and Thank you Mira
This chapter legit had me in tears.
Man, I just fucking love Berserk.
you have no one blame but yourself guts

It wasn’t really all for nothing, those two years gave him the strength to fight Zodd and worse. Even if unintentionally, he saved a ton of people.

This was an amazingly beautiful description of that chapter. Thank you so much for doing this
This was a well thought-out piece on an underrated yet important chapter in Guts' journey. You've caught the nuances of each panel's beautifully drawn art, from the emotions in each character's faces to the significance of Godo's haunting last words. You've just won yourself a new subscriber- keep it up man!
I just realized the symbolism of Guts leaving his sword to be fixed and going one night to think and face his demons without it, the sword (nicked and cracked) pretty much symbolized himself at the time, with all the cracks to his mental state, and after he gets it the next day, new and reforged, he also reforged the "blade of his soul" with a new resolve to look after Casca, basically making him leave an entirely new man
Another realization is that him going one night without his sword and he feels powerless, and his demons are at full view for him to face, as said in the video, for the first time he is actually thinking about his life, as his sword was always his protection to hide those things away to avoid facing them.
A bit late for realization, and probably a common one, but I'll at least keep this here for future me to remember
Tldr: Guts is a lot more like a sword than I thought, and they have a relationship almost like it was an important character
What a beautiful realization.
