    As someone who uses adapted Canon glasses on my S5s, the lens issues doesn't matter. And then the most important thing to me, I just saw a review that showed the PDAF works on adapted Canon glasses on the S5ii. Canon glasses are one of the most cheapest complete lenses you can get, and to know that it'll work on the S5ii, any doubts I had about copping it is just not there anymore. The weight thing, it's full frame lenses against apsc lenses, they're not specific to S5ii.

    While I respect your opinion and will agree that you’re highlighting what can be considered good advice for budget conscious individuals… this is kinda an apples/oranges debate. Larger sensors require larger lenses. Larger lenses generally cost more money for equivalent quality. Each has different benefits but generally a larger sensor is going to provide other benefits like low light performance and a wider selection of future growth. Sony even has far more FF lenses than APE-C ones.

    Sorry that I don't agree with your reasoning. Full Frame is much better in terms of image quality. If you are satisfied with crop images, then don't switch. But for those guys who are looking for Full Frame only (like myself), this is not a reason.

    • @mrammm377
      @mrammm377 Рік тому

      Ahh I don’t agree that full frame is ‘much better’ for image quality. You can get basically the same kind of image with a smaller sensor using their native form lenses. No one is going to look at a photo and be like ‘ ohh snapp that was taken by a full frame camera ‘
      It’s like saying there are no professionals out there that shoot mft or apsc.
      I’m sure you mean well just tired of reading/hearing this. There is a reason why there are pros who prefer smaller sensors, which is the same reason why people feel fullframe is better than even larger sensors like medium format

    I was really torn between the S5ii and the FX30. I have lots of EF Canon glass and both can be adapted for either camera. The deal breaker for me was the FX30's extra crop using the Atomos Ninja. I really love the option of open gate recording as I have anamorphic MFT glass that can be converted to L mount. The assist tools, vectorscopes etc are really handy for nailing exposure and having had a GH5, I don't think anyone does IBIS as good as Lumix so I ordered the S5iix. Bummer I have to wait until May to get my hands on it though!

    Good point for those already in a system.
    But me I've been preparing to upgrade into FF from cropped. But I've been so frustrated with Canon and Sony for taking so long, and I've been guessing they've either been playing each other, doing mind games as to how to counter each other that they've been kinda neglecting customers. I'm more positive about that for Canon than Sony because as always, Sony's been doing a good fight for consumers. Esp evidenced with the FX30. But the a6600 follow up is overdue, the a7c also. This is my bracket. And what about Canon? Freaking crippling and milking consumers left and right.
    The R7 is great, still a bit crippled, but where are the RF-S lenses? Where are the R, RP replacements????
    Because of this I feel like Sony is taking their time too.
    I hate you Canon. I was almost ready to compromise with the R7. Or wait for Sony's a7c II for maybe a year - what the heck, that's too long. There's just not a lot of good options in the 1500-2000 for hybrid. (The R7 has no lenses, the FX30 has no photo sort of)
    Then here comes the S5 II out of nowhere, kicking and flailing for a fight. A very pro- consumer, pro- competition entry. THANK YOU, PANASONIC. I thought the orig S5 was packed (and so discounted recently), if only the AF was.. you know.
    Fortunately I have some full frame lenses for my current Canon APS-C.. and the S5 II has been tested so far to work great! (adapted) and I mean, GREAT! I'm excited. I'm curious about your Canon video now, but I hope you take this into account.
    The only thing that could've made the S5 II perfect was 4K 120p. Even cropped, sure. But I hope it can still be added in firmware, or maybe even on the S5 IIX.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  Рік тому +4

      For me the R7 is a big disappointment for video. It is definitely crippled and it appears canon isn't going to make any lenses for it. Realistically, the a6000 series successor is more what I wanted over the fx30. There's a lot of features in it, that I will never use, but for me it is still the best option right now. I am excited for the a7000 or whatever they decide to call it. With my luck it will come out next week and be 500 less than the fx30. Then I'll wind up losing money the same way I'll lose on the R7 once I sell it.

    I agree, when I was using the Sony a6400 for a few years, the lens choices were incredible. Having said that, I upgraded to the Panasonic S5, the original, and the aps-c mode on that camera is remarkable, not to mention the stabilization was game-changing for me, and the main reason I upgraded. You literally don't lose any quality at all in aps-c mode. I shoot anamorphic with aps-c mode, and so I have plenty of flexibility with my lenses. I would say 90% of the time I have my Sigma 28-70 on the camera, and when you add aps-c mode, it has a pretty good reach. I don't need a further reach than that personally, but if you own the 24-105, then you have something that's equivalent to the 18-105, which I also was in love with when I was shooting with a Sony camera. I'm not the type of filmmaker who relies upon autofocus all that much, if at all, so for me upgrading to the Panasonic S5, and the deal that I got, the incredible price, including so much stuff, it was well worth it. Especially since I shoot anamorphic quite a bit, and I can de-squeeze in camera AND have remarkable stabilization, which the Sony loses when you shoot anamorphic, even with the new firmware update. But at the end of the day, all of these cameras are amazing. :-)

    I really hope Panasonic doesn't go down the "Canon" road of creating a lens system at a high cost with marginally good performance compared to the competition. The one and only reason I use Panasonic right now is because of the battery life. I can run all day on a wedding or commercial shoot with 1 to 2 batteries, and on very heavy shoot days (Catholic ceremonies) 3 batteries max. Sony is making some fantastic products right now. Great colors, no overheating, amazing frame rate options, but I have heard people talk about going through 5 to 6 batteries on a wedding day...not something that appeals to me. IF that is not the case I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know because that's the one and only reason I wouldn't ditch Panasonic for a FX3 right now.

    Many of these discussions could be done in a comparison between M4/3 and APSC and that's why when I wanted to save weight and costs I preferred M4/3. Today I decided to switch to Full Frame and I made a very pleasant discovery, there is a very good used Panasonic and Sigma Full Frame lenses for S5 and I have already bought 5 lenses at half price .... I also ordered the S5M2 for only 1899 euros with the Panasonic promotion in Italy (300 euros). Of course the weights change compared to m4/3 but not so much compared to APSC excluding tele lenses.
    Furthermore, I think that S5M2 is a superior camera to all competing cameras simply because it is 6K 10bit so in fact not so much comparable to 4K cameras .... but nobody says this.

    Thanks for the video, great work. I got an open box deal on the original S5, for 1,400 bucks. I got a Ninja V for 400 bucks. You gotta have a decent monitor, right. I just shot a feature film and the image is poetry. Shooting into the Ninja I am getting FULL FRAME, 5.9k Prores RAW, 422 at 12 bit (that is 68 billion colors) . I am a pro filmmaker, I have shot RED's and Arri's, I am totally comfortable saying THERE IS NOTHING out there that can compete at this price point with the S5 for narrative, poetic images. You would literally have to buy an Arri to even begin to spot the difference in the image. That is how good this sensor is at 5.9k RAW. I started with GH4' 5's and loved them, but once you go full frame brother, you ain't never going back. I had to get a Sigma adapter (200 bucks) so I can use my Canon glass. So, where am I now 2000 bucks, for the image I get out of the S5, mind blowing!!!!!!!!! Now, I don't shoot sports or wildlife and I don't use auto focus. I shoot feature films. You have got to watch the rolling shutter on action sequences, no fast panning, etc, but man what an image. Unbelievable!!! It has got to be noted, my sets are dressed and properly lit, the shots are "composed" that is what it takes to make something look "cinematic." The "cinematic" look has nothing much to do with the camera at all, it is all about light and composition, down to the color of the costumes and the walls of the set. You can point an iPhone at a properly set up shot and it will look great. But, an iPhone does not shoot 6k RAW, right. Most of these mid-range mirror-less cameras are great. But that S5 sensor into the Ninja is about as good as it gets. Now the S5II is out the price of the old (old, ha) S5 has come right down. Unless you can't figure out how to turn a focus wheel then maybe you need the new one. The new one is only 2000, (but you pay extra for the RAW output!) We currently live in film making heaven.There is literally zero reason you are not making a film, right now.

Can you give me a little advice from your POV about how is the FX30 ? I am tempted for Panasonic because is fullframe and has a lot of codecs option, improved AF( but still under Sony's), but here the downside is like you explain in the video: you have a little pool of lenses to choose from and they are also more expensive in relation with APSC( Sony FX30).
