I think Panasonic did a marketing master class move. Flew a bunch of very trusted influencers/creators out. No sleaze. Showed them a great time. Sent them home with bodies and lenses to basically keep in certain cases ("long term testing" 😉) . It's an absolute coup. They bet the farm on the S5ii getting a warm reception. And I hope it does. The S5ii may not be quite there, maybe it needs another firmware update or two, but for now, the fact it is now being compared to the AF king the Sony A7siii means it is now up there with the best. And the fact that it has the best IBIS hands down in the business really make Panasonic a serious contender for the best mirrorless camera out there. I'm not saying it is but it is up there.
I have used the Sony A7siii. My friend uses it has his main camera and I help him shoot his videos. Also used the Sony A7iii. I have the S5ii and in my view its better then the Sony all round. The HAF works perfectly along with the AF. IBIS like you motion. For a full frame camera in a mirrorless body it has one of the best.
It's also $1,500 cheaper than the a7S III, which is a significant difference. The S5II is the best bang for the buck by a mile. Nothing else comes close for under $2k. Thats the same price the 5 year old a7III is still selling for which is absurd.
I was hoping you could help me decide between the Lumix S5 and the new S5 II. For context, I’m starting out with photography and I’ll be going to film school soon, so I want to buy a hybrid camera that performs great for both stills and video, that will also grow with me as I develop. I’ve found the S5 with a lens for £1400 and the new S5II is about £2300 once you factor the lens in. The S5 has almost all the functionality I think I’ll need and at this price it’s a great deal but I’m unsure if I should save up a bit longer and get the newer version with all the updates (i.e. improved autofocus and unlimited video recording at 4k etc). Which camera would you recommend buying in my situation? Is the S5 at £1400 too good to pass up or should I hold out for the S5 II? Loved the review and thanks in advance!
S5 will do the job very well for you. It is still a great camera. Photography wise, they are both great. Very little in between them. For video, I'd personally save up and go for S5II, even though you can make S5 work and use manual focus when filming, the time will come that the only way to get that perfect shot is by using reliable AF and S5II does that well.
@@PavSZ Thanks for the response- it was super helpful. However, I do want to buy a camera now to start practicing so what cameras would you recommend for a beginner who wants to practice capturing video and street photography? I’ve read about the Fujifilm XS-10 and the XT-30 II with a 18-55mm lens as a kit lens but do you have any other good alternatives in a similar price range? (Or is the £1400 S5 the way to go here?)
Great video Pav! I know you are a longtime S5 owner like myself so you’re probably familiar with this question - did you happen to test if the “sticky” targeting still works for face/human detection? Meaning the feature where you either touch the yellow box or click the joystick with a subject selected to create the “targeting” reticule around the box? This is something reviewers on the original S5 always missed and I feel like it significantly improves the AF hit rate even with just DFD
Good question!!!! I have been using that method with S5 as long as I remember but I never thought about trying it on S5II .... for a reason. The whole focus mode selection has been re-designed. There is no separate 'human' mode like it was on S5. It is 'Full Area (Human Detection) or (Face/Eye Detection)' and it just works tracking and focusing. There is no need to tap to track better now. I have just tried it as well, it does not create cross hair rectangle around the focusing box anymore. It doesn't need to. Thanks for that question. I'll answer and demonstrate this in the future S5II videos
@@PavSZ Thanks for the detailed response and testing! Based on many of the S5 II videos I figured that the interface and modes for the AF system are completely different now and it’s probably irrelevant. I rewatched your AF analysis after I commented to double check and and didn’t see the targeting so I assumed it’s like you said - no longer there. I’m a little worried about the human mode being split in two, but hoping it works well in execution!
Hi Pav, really enjoying your reviews! I see you visit Poland often recently! - if you ever come by to Wroclaw and need some help shooting or just wanna do street photography/see interesting places - just give me a shout. Cheers!
Awesome! I have been to Wroclaw last year. I might be coming again this year. Connect with me on insta please and send me DM. Thanks. Po polsku tez mowie 😉
My answer is "Yes". The S5ii just might make me switch from Sony back to Panasonic. I started filming with the GH5, and shot a feature film with it. Eventually, I switched to Sony because of the AF. But, I've always preferred the skin tones and color science of Panasonic over most brands. Plus, Panasonic gives you Shutter Angle, which other brands only provide in their more expensive cinema cameras. And we know the benefits of shutter angle when it comes to slow motion and light flicker. I can see Panasonic fine tuning the AF with firmware updates. Which I think will make their AF as reliable as Sony. These are exciting times for Panasonic.
Not only it keeps up but the overall image is more appealing to me. I know that this relates to the colour paterns but there is something about the lumix colours. Excellent. I will keep my GH5 though ha ha ha and will buy this if I can get away with it.
Did panasonic actually make the sensor? You mentioned that briefly, but I've heard from everywhere else that Sony makes the sensor itself (no shame in that since few companies actually make sensors now), and that Panasonic stopped making sensors in 2019. Am I correct, or did they tell you different information? Fantastic video as always. I'm getting it.
@@PavSZ Interesting. I literally watched a whole UA-cam video that speculated the sensor is a 5 year old A73 sensor lol. Since the specs are similar. Funny how people just guess at things. Glad to hear they made it custom straight from the source (well, through you and then the source lol).
The S5ii will be a camera that will just get better and better. With the firmware updates that will come. The HAF system is very very good. I would say the same as the Sony a7siii. The IBS is outstanding. In a way I think that the S5ii will be a camera that is too much for most people who buy it. Its not a vlogging camera its a camera built for those who want to stay behind it.
Its made me finally start a YT channel. I have used Lumix cameras since the G7. In a funny way it feels like Lumix brought out the S5ii as a thank you for everyone who stayed loyal to them. As often the users said the one thing that let Lumix Cameras down was the AF. The S5ii is my first full frame camera and would have taken me ages to master it if I hadn't use Lumix cameras such as the GH5 before it. With Lumix cameras you really have to learn. The camera makes the user want to learn how to shoot footage the right way. @@PavSZ
For stills, does the camera actually focus on the eye, or does it focus on eyelashes, eye brows or glasses lenses? I returned the S5 because of this issue. Crosshair is on the eye, but when you upload it to the computer, the focus is off.
@@PavSZ I appreciate the response! I did watch her video and she did note that it was sometimes getting eyelashes instead of eyes. But she didn't do a test with someone wearing glasses. I see you wear glasses so I wanted to ask if you had the chance to test out the eye autofocus with someone who wears glasses. Thanks.
Sony still looks a lot smoother and quicker. Very tempting camera but switching all my Z mount lenses to L mount and my 2 Z6’s is a tough pill. Waiting for the z6iii to see what the offering is before I decide what system to go with.
the thing is that Sony isn't smoother or quicker, about the same. It all depends on the lens, situation and the user really. Switching systems sucks. I could never do it, I never done it. I was Nikon shooter, still am and I still own Z6 but I couldn't let it go. I bought Sony cameras as well and then Lumix and one lens at the time for each. Use them all for different jobs. They are all different tools for different jobs.
It might not be practical but side by side video footage comparisons with Panasonic S1H would be very nice. However I realize that S1H is a different price point. But if someone is an S1H owner and needs phase detect autofocus from time to time or for a few shots where S1H is their “A” camera for that project, it would be helpful to know how similar the footage looks between S1H and S5 ii. 😊👍
@@PavSZ I looked online and couldn’t discern if the S5 ii has an anti-aliasing (AA) moire prevention filter. From what I read it appears that the S5 Mark one does not have an AA filter whereas the S1H does have an AA filter which some feel gives the S1H a more filmic look.
I am guessing here but in my opinion it focuses on what is closer to the lens even though the eyes/face are still in the shot. In full area AF, it does it only for couple of seconds and comes back to the face. In my video, I used Zone AF mode (set to large) with AF detection set to human. It tracked me across almost full frame and the product (my hand) in the zone area. I might be doing it wrong but that solution worked for me
@@PavSZ interesting. It works really well and that’s surprising! Most cameras really focus specifically on the face unless it’s completely hidden, but you seem to have cracked the code!
@@RhettThompsonFilm I use Sony a7IV as a webcam very often and I just can't get it to focus on anything closer if I don't cover my eyes completely. This seems to work well, even if I am doing it wrong haha
The micro HDMI is what stopped me from getting the older model. I had the GH5s, I love Lumix color science. I was going get the Fuji xH2s but I'm glad I waited.
yes, in few ways. Combination of eye/face detect and zone af or human detect and zone af. This will hugely depend on the subject and lighting though. Saying that I had a lot of issues with Sony focusing on hands when it shouldn't recently. These are the things that you experiment with and find the setting/mode/workflow that works for you
I have the A7IV while it does a lot things right, I preferred the color from the S1. Switched over to Sony for the AF. But find myself using it less for certain situations. Fuji now but tempted to go back 😂…Will wait and see what the SIIX brings.
I've sell my LumixS5 and changed it for A7IV, but now the S5II is on the market and I feel, that I'm missing the Lumix system - witch one you would take: A7IV or S5II?
@@365BS hard one for me. Only you can decide which one is right for you. IBIS and 6k open gate of S5II or faster and ever so slightly more accurate AF of a7IV
Ok we get it.. it has great autofocus to compete with Sony.. but why is not anyone talking about lowlights.. lowlight is still important you can't carry light when you go hike and decide to vlog ?? We need a separate video for lowlights comparison.. why noone is discussing about lowlights on S5ii seriously.. ??
try the 4 channel audio and show us. try the 96 mp stills on some Polish architecture and landscape too with motion detection correction. show more 1080 HD 120 of anything. show how it picks up animals. and most important fast moving things like cars or trains or airplanes. Good review. Nearly everyone LOVES the camera. now it should be in all Panny lines. Happy New Year MARTY SENDER YOU TUBE
So my question to all "who's going to switch" : how much money are you losing every time you're switching? I mean You most likely have 5-6 lenses to switch as well, not just the body? P.S. Great Review!!!
switching brands/system is not that difficult. Not everyone is mega invested in lenses. I've managed 15 years with just 2. Someone could already be with L-mount system like Sigma fp and switch to this much easier than from Canon for example
I wonder how the autofocus would work if you're using a teleprompter, wear a hat, and have more distance between you and the camera. Otherwise, nice content. You gained a new sub.
Hey. We want to know how the new AF works with Sigma lenses. Zooms: Sigma 14-24 2.8 or Sigma 16-28 2.8 Sigma 24-70 2.8 or Sigma 28-70 2.8 Sigma 100-400 5-6.3 Primes: Sigma 14 1.8 Sigma 20 1.4 Sigma 35 1.4 Sigma 50 1.4 Sigma 85 1.4
@@PavSZ Sounds great. Is it possible to test how EF glasses work through Sigma MC-21 converter? I mean in the same video about Sigma glasses + Lumix s5 II. Thanks.
Oh, fecking please with the auto focus!!!!!!!!! Yes, I am delighted this new update might finally shut auto focus fans THE FECK up. I just would not get a camera like this for blogging. Plenty of other really cheap video cameras for that with fabulous auto the feck focus. You could use an old Canon GL2 for god's sake. I just shot a feature film on the S5 and the image is poetry. I love this camera. I shot into the Ninja V so I got FULL FRAME, 5.9k Proress RAW, 422, 12 bit. Fecking mind blowing!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wasn't waiting for auto focus. But, now, you get auto focus but you have to pay extra for RAW output??????????? What the feck is up with that!!!!!!! haha. Fecking love Panasonic. That's Justice right there. haha!
you don't pay extra for RAW on S5II, you get S5IIx and you get RAW and more. Manual focusing is not for everyone and not for every job. I film 98% of my work with AF on, my preference and this camera is taking me (finally) away from Sony
@@PavSZ Yep, the S5IIx would be the way to go. I do like the improved IBS. That said, as long as you don't care about AF, and I was being facetious as I am sure you understood, you can probably buy the original S5 for about a 1000 bucks now and get all of that RAW 5.9k for bottom dollar! Everyone knows Sony is the Devil's Spore! haha. Happy shooting brother.
Every single Lumix user, including myself, was in denial about AF until this camera was announced. Fact. If you only do photos, than there is nothing wrong with AF on any of S or GH series cameras with CDAF
For anyone considering s1, s5 etc - if continuous focus in video mode is important, these cameras can't do it reliably. It's night and day even vs fuji. Another caveat - watching all the s5ii reviews it seems the af is still not that good but that might be remedied with firmware updates.
Im tyring to decide between the x-h2s and the S5iiX. I'd jump on the Pana, but my main issue is the zoom price. Great lenses, but there are only a few and they are insanely expensive. Sigma has a couple normal range 2.8 zooms around $1000 which is definitely an option, though. Fuji has more affordable zooms, and there's also the pretty nice Tamron 17-70 2.8 for $700.
Sigma has a really wide range of lenses available and they all come in L-mount. In the end of the day, you get what you can afford and what looks at least on paper right to you and make it work - that's what I do
Making crop sensor lenses is obviously cheaper, not a fair comparison. Compare the Sigma lenses to the Sony and Canon FF zoom lenses and they are a steal.
Waaaaaaay too early to say "Best camera of 2023" X.x as we have yet to see what could potentially be a "Panasonic S1H mark II" or the "Sony A7S IV"! I'd even be extremely surprised if Panasonic brought out a new box shaped camera with the GH6 sensor or S5 II sensor with the new auto focus system! To me, it's still too early for such a click bait title...
Lol you are a much better videographer than youtuber, the af on the s5 is atrocious. Price needs to come down to 700 to make this camera worth buying, since you’ll have to spend hundreds to workaround the terrible af with follow focus rigs, atomos, etc.

And the fact that it has the best IBIS hands down in the business really make Panasonic a serious contender for the best mirrorless camera out there. I'm not saying it is but it is up there.
Sony a7sIII is only amazing focusing on the eye, this is not far behind but in my opinion better for everything else
@@scottdarvill8132 it's very hard to advise you. I don't really know what is right for you. Sorry
Thanks for the video, Pav. Wish the upcoming 14-28mm lens would have had OIS stabilization.
it will be very good with this camera regardless. Thank you for watching!
I have s5 already, I’ll wait for s5iix
S5, S5II and still waiting for x
Exciting times for Panasonic indeed!
I keep using my S5 and S5II now more than my Sonys
You have covered absolutely everything.. thank you for the best review of the s5-2
oh thank you so much!
I would like a pro version of the kit lens 20-60. I suppose the 16-35 f/4 is close.
20-60 kit lens is pretty good as is. It would be nice to have constant f4 but I don't think it would be the same size then
Damn your pictures are the best I’ve seen on the S52. Love the colors.
Wow! thank you so much!
Pretty exciting. Almost want to see refreshed review videos for all the lenses to accommodate the new and improved focus performance!
It would make sense to review them all again.
I'll be doing few Sigma lenses AF tests on S5II very soon
Not only it keeps up but the overall image is more appealing to me. I know that this relates to the colour paterns but there is something about the lumix colours. Excellent. I will keep my GH5 though ha ha ha and will buy this if I can get away with it.
I won't tell anyone if you buy it 😉
Amazing, is possible to magnify to check focus while in rec with this camera? Thanks
Yes you can!
The colors are super great compared to canon and sony
they certainly are
Very nice review . I like it.
Thank you!
Great review and great camera Pav! :)
Thank you Shane!!!
Panasonic and Leica developed this sensor in collaboration. It's called L2
@@PavSZ Interesting. I literally watched a whole UA-cam video that speculated the sensor is a 5 year old A73 sensor lol. Since the specs are similar. Funny how people just guess at things. Glad to hear they made it custom straight from the source (well, through you and then the source lol).
Can I use my "crop sensor" lenses with this camera since it is a full frame camera?
yes. You can switch it to APS-C mode
Thanks for your timely review!!
My pleasure! Thank you!

The S5ii will be a camera that will just get better and better. With the firmware updates that will come. The HAF system is very very good. I would say the same as the Sony a7siii. The IBS is outstanding. In a way I think that the S5ii will be a camera that is too much for most people who buy it. Its not a vlogging camera its a camera built for those who want to stay behind it.
absolutely
Crosshair is on the eye, but when you upload it to the computer, the focus is off.
it will hugely depend on the lens. Please check out Julia's review - link in the description
Thanks.
@@YaYousef5 not yet but I'll be doing these tests soon with Lumix and Sigma lenses
@@PavSZ awesome! Subscribed.
Sony still looks a lot smoother and quicker. Very tempting camera but switching all my Z mount lenses to L mount and my 2 Z6’s is a tough pill. Waiting for the z6iii to see what the offering is before I decide what system to go with.
Stop the cap!
the thing is that Sony isn't smoother or quicker, about the same.
The best camera of 2023 so far... 😉
haha! yes, I meant that it might stay like that
It might not be practical but side by side video footage comparisons with Panasonic S1H would be very nice. However I realize that S1H is a different price point. But if someone is an S1H owner and needs phase detect autofocus from time to time or for a few shots where S1H is their “A” camera for that project, it would be helpful to know how similar the footage looks between S1H and S5 ii. 😊👍
I'd imagine it would look very similar as they both use the same codecs (S1H has got more options though)
How doe this product AF mode work exactly?
AF tests with sigma lenses would be great!
I will be doing some very soon
Nice review. I would like to see how AF-C for video is with Sigma L-mount lenses as they don't have DFD.
I'll be testing that very soon
The micro HDMI is what stopped me from getting the older model. I had the GH5s, I love Lumix color science. I was going get the Fuji xH2s but I'm glad I waited.
Yes
There will be so much new stuff coming in the next year, everyone will have to step up to catch lumix hype
Great improvement in af 😊
it is!!
Price in euros?
How works the sigma 24-70 with the new s5 ii ? ;)
as far as I know, all new DG DN L-mount Sigmas work very well with this camera
Getting it!!
Yes! Let me know if you'd like to try mine before you order
@@PavSZ Only gone and pre-ordered it too x
Is it possible to make s5ii autofocus act like Sony @2:00 ? Keep the focus on face/eye and not switch to hands of products?
yes, in few ways.
I am not selling my a7IV or a7sIII but I'll be using them for different jobs and maybe less now.
This camera really rocks
I've sell my LumixS5 and changed it for A7IV, but now the S5II is on the market and I feel, that I'm missing the Lumix system - witch one you would take: A7IV or S5II?
I'd take both .... oh I have. Both great cameras and different tools for different jobs for me. Couldn't just choose one unfortunately
@@PavSZ and if you have to choose one only for video? Stil it's impossible?😁
@@365BS hard one for me.
Only you can decide which one is right for you.
IBIS and 6k open gate of S5II or faster and ever so slightly more accurate AF of a7IV
@@PavSZ thanks for the answer :)
AF and IBIS are insane.
They are!
there is a lot of videos out there comparing the low light performance. It is good, on pair with Sony a7sIII for sure
try the 4 channel audio and show us. try the 96 mp stills on some Polish architecture and landscape too with motion detection correction. show more 1080 HD 120 of anything. show how it picks up animals. and most important fast moving things like cars or trains or airplanes. Good review. Nearly everyone LOVES the camera. now it should be in all Panny lines. Happy New Year MARTY SENDER YOU TUBE
Thanks!
I will put all these things on my list of future tests/videos
How sharp is 120fps in 1080 p?
sharp
Brotheerrrrrr
Shhhhhh I'm watching your masterpiece! 😉
Someone could already be with L-mount system like Sigma fp and switch to this much easier than from Canon for example
thank you for watching!
Please review Panasonic's new Lumix S 14-28mm f/4-5.6 too. Thanks
As I said in my video. I will review that lens as soon as I can get my hands on it.
Do you still have it?
yes, it is my main camera for photography and S5IIx for video
@@PavSZ have you tried sony zve1?? Looks very promissing
Sony and canon should worry now, many Sony and canon user are going ti move to LUMIX
possibly!
I wonder how the autofocus would work if you're using a teleprompter, wear a hat, and have more distance between you and the camera. Otherwise, nice content. You gained a new sub.
it does work as I do use teleprompter with it and S5IIx and use 50 or 95mm lenses and very often wear a baseball cap

@@charliemcgrain absolutely! nothing wrong with S5, still great camera
i am using the S1R since years. And i never had any issue with the autofocus so far. There is absolutely no reason to switch to the S5 Mark 2.
Good for you. However, many shooters don't share the same experience. Different shooting styles, different needs.
@@fredriksvard2603 not seeing that at all. Equal or better from what I've seen
I think the s52x is th3 camera of the year it doesn't have same auto as Sony but close
true!
I did NOT say that!
There is a clear question mark at the end. It is a question, not a statement
It's jan 4th.
How would it be best camera of 2023? Lol
there is a question mark after that sentence - there might be nothing more exciting coming out this year
