Yes, disconnecting the pipes from the old filter can be a bit tricky. Two good jobs done there, good to hear the car is running smoother! Thanks for watching
I once shut my boot with the battery disconnected, my face must have been a picture as I realised what I had done! Luckily there is a pull cord under the rear seat for manual release. It’s in the manual I think! Might make a nice quick video and save someone! Just a thought! Keep up the good work this channel has helped me no end 👍
I know that feeling, did the same with my old E46 touring that had no lock barrel in the tailgate! I know the pull cord you mention, great idea for a vid, thanks for the tip 👍
Hi there! Great tip! Simply, I've totally forgot! I'll add the filter to the list. Many thanks because this part is one of the ones you never think about (myself). Great video!

Hey Mtech Guy, I damaged the fuel feed line coming off the sender (5:46) Do you know if you need to drop the tank to replace this or can you just replace under the car?
Hi mate, thanks again for your video. Just did the job on mine but must have done something wrong. I was careful not do damage the fuel level sensor but after reinstalling everything and going to fill the tank at the station, the fuel level is showing just half tank, like precisely on the half instead of the full tank. Very strange. Now i need to empty the tank by driving enough to reduce the fuel level to remove the unit without spreading fuel everywhere out of the tank. I suspect also that maybe the tubes could prevent the sensor from going up totally.
Possible it may be caught up with the hose routing? When you have it out, check the sender on the new pump to ensure it looks ok and isn’t faulty out the box. Make sure the sender arm can travel freely when you reinstall it
@@MTechGuy i felt like it was free when i reinstalled it but you see, maybe i should pay more attention to that. I also think that it could come from a bad sensor. I ordered another one and will replace it in 350km.
If you take off the gas cap and/or take out the fuel pump fuse or relay before you pull the hose from the assembly. Would there still be fuel pressure when you pull the hose?
Removing the gas cap will relive the tank to atmospheric pressure, but the fuel pressure will remain in the lines. If you remove the fuel pump fuse/relay you’d have to run the engine to relive the pressure in the line- something I wouldn’t recommend with this engine. If you let the car sit for a few hours there isn’t that much pressure there
Not so far. Failure usually occurs due to fuel contamination rather than the injectors themselves becoming worn or degraded, so no real set interval. Cleaning them can help if they’ve become ‘dirty’ over time
One more of you do plugs and injectors gradually weaken until failure or do they just one day fail completely I want to change all mine on my m6 just because
Is there a good way to depressurize the fuel system so that the fuel feed line won’t spray fuel everywhere? I heard an empty gas tank (less than 10 miles), disconnecting the battery, and leaving the car overnight should relieve some of the pressure.
I did mine with somewhere between a quarter and half tank. I let it sit overnight, disconnected the battery, and barely had any fuel spill out. It was very manageable.
@@MTechGuy thanks for the reply. Yeah I just couldn't find anything on the Web about it. I'm guessing all the listed part numbers will be fit for purpose on the E63 too. Many thanks again
My e60 m5 gone into limp mode today, various misfires fault codes and fault codes p3005 and p2290 one relates to injector control pressure to low. The car sounds like it is not getting fuel, would this be blocked fuel filter. Thanks Andy
Possibly fuel filter or fuel pump. Could also be related to fuel pump fuses or fuel pump module. I would start with the fuses, and chuck in a new fuel filter if it’s not had one for a long time, and go from there. Keep in mind the fuel filter has to come out to replace the fuel pump so it’s worth considering doing both while your at it, but of course it comes down to time and how much $$$ you want to spend in one go 👍
Started the e60 m5 this morning, started no problem but only lasted 20 seconds died as though it had no fuel. I removed the rear seats and all the underside is in factory condition which makes me think the fuel pump and filter have never been changed. Tried starting the car again but it only lasted 5 seconds. I don’t hear any noises from the fuel pump, so have decided to change the pump as well as the filter. The car is on 105,000 miles.Do you agree? Thanks Andy
It sounds like a fuel pump issue, I would check the fuel pump fuses before fitting a new pump though. Sometimes a faulty pump will work in the early failure stages if you get someone to hit the fuel tank while cranking. Check out one of my previous videos on E60 M5 fuel pressure issues- ua-cam.com/video/n7Rd6DNY2Gs/v-deo.html Good luck 👍
@@MTechGuy new fuel pump and filter arriving tomorrow, was just wondering if anything to do with a brake fluid change would cause the car to stall after 20 seconds on first start up and 5 seconds on start ups after that? The car had brake fluid change 2 days before my problems started. Would a bad brake booster sensor cause my stalling issues? Thanks andy
@@951rollincivicsi Sounds like it could be an injector/fuel issue, or compression? Sometimes these engine break valve springs. Check your plugs are ok, then I’d swap injectors from bank to bank and see how it behaves
No worries. I don’t have anything in the pipeline for the fuel pump. It’s a very similar process as the filter, but it’s connected to the filter, so the filter has to be accessed too
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fuel filter that blocked before. If it’s fuel related it’s more likely the fuel pump itself, or the pressure regulator (which is part of the fuel filter assembly) Could be any number of other possible causes though, scan for codes and go from there
Have a problem with my M5 at the moment the fuel pump fuse in the boot 20amp keeps blowing around 10 mins after running also noticed without the key it the pump is continuing to run have a feeling the fuel pump is on the way out but the filter hasn't been changed so might do this at the same time great tutorial thanks for sharing
Could be any number of issues. Running the car under 1/4 tank of fuel, or a really dirty fuel filter can both contribute to blowing the fuse (the pump to overheating) If the pump & filter are both original it’ll be a good time to replace them- the filter has to come out to get the pump out anyhow. The noise could be SMG pump, stereo amp or leak detection pump (usa) or faulty fuel pump relay, among other things
@@MTechGuy have ordered a few relays as they are cheap and can have them as spares anyway will start there and see what happens when they come tomorrow if not ill start with the fuel pump and filter i think hopefully i can get to the bottom of it over the weekend car has been sitting over the winter also so a full look over it is needed

Finally got around to doing it, and a few extra hints. My car has the heated rear seats, so if you’ve got these then make sure you disconnect the cables under the seat, one on each side. Secondly - threading the seat belt through the hole in the sound insulation and over the head rest is a great way to gently hold this out of the way without obstructing the work area or damaging the sound proofing. And finally- whilst it is impossible to connect the hoses incorrectly, it is possible to route the two long hoses the wrong way and impede the free movement of the fuel sender. So its worth paying attention to how they are routed when you take the old filter out. Thanks for another great video 👍🏻
