I just finished working on my E60 M5, I've been working on it since March using DIS v57 and I finally got all codes and faults sorted out, made me so happy when I ran a scan and returned no faults
Man, you hit the nail on the head with so much you said here. One thing you left out, right under the throttle actuators, sits idle actuators..at about $600 a pop. But if you are in there, do them. I have the same car, same Indianapolis Red, with the Portland interior. Bingo, people buy these used, run the hell out of them, don't fix the abuse issues, sell them, then the next owner goes on the forums and says they are junk. They don't wanna pay what 10w60 oil costs, so they make excuses...so and so says 10w40 is fine, or whatever. I believe rod bearings go fast, because people have no idea how to warm this V10 properly, use the wrong oil etc...IF, the bearing was the problem, don't you think BMW would have fixed that way before now?...I don't know, I have had two, yes they are not cheap to work on, but if you want cheap, but a Ford/Chevy and drive what EVERYONE else has. I use only Redline 10w60, Redline75w140 limited slip diff oil, Redline fluid for the SMG
Spot on! Well said! I use liquid moly products. Just my preference and I have had no issues. I also had a few things done as soon as I purchased the car. I did my rod bearings the first week with ARP bolt. I used the BE bearings. This was done at a certified shop. My self I did the spark plugs, coil packs, both ionic current modules, fuel pump, fuel filter, I have the throttle bottle actuators and the idle actuators and I have had them for a year now but have not had the time to put them on yet but will very soon. Just out a brand new set of Continental contact O2 sport on her literally last Friday. I just order the Pcv valves, thermostat, and the pinion seal and diff oil even though it’s not leaking once I go under the hood that will be it for a bit. I have not replaced the charcoal fuel filter canister yet either. That will be in the near future as well. Next big purchase is brakes and rotors. Ugh. That’s a little ticket. Oh I did by 2 of the O2 sensors. (1) upstream and (1) down stream
I had my bank one idle actuator fail so I replaced both pair. I was told the previous owner replaced one of the throttle actuators but they both looked the same age to me. They are working fine so I’ll replace them later.
NOICE.. berry NOICE.. I live in North.Mex Just rebuilt my 71 caprice.. double JATO's in back.. close to a cliff-wall.. roads are so sweet there.. I got passed by this burgundy M5..
Does the car vibrate when it idles rough? in my case, I can feel and see the doors vibrate when you open them while the engine runs idle in neutral. I am still investigating what causes this vibration. Filters, oils, fluids, rubbers (from the airbox which you mentioned), MAFs, coilpacks, sparks, etc replaced. Also changed the flywheel. I still get the vibration though
@@76tfdtr4r5 this car WILL leave you stranded at some point. Both of my vehicles are sorted at the moment. I Just know the E60 M5 has left me stranded in the past. And economically speaking you may be right but why have one toy when you can have/afford two? ;-) I have had my M5 for 8 years now. At one time I was running a c-class as my daily and the M5. Then moved on to an E61 530xi and the M5. Now its TRD Pro 4runner and M5. The M5 has had ionic modules go bad, throttle actuators go bad, alternator go bad, clutch went on it, SMG had to be replaced. All that time I had a daily that I also loved to drive and could rely on while my M5 was being repaired.
This video is spot on. I just solved my chronic misfire: coils, plugs, and the ionic controller all had to go. El guapo is an expensive beast but damn is she worth it
hey bro i just bough a 2008 bmw m5 on my way home the transmision malfuntion come up and there also a code for p0174 bank 2 lean i ask the owner he say i need to replace 4 new camshaft poisition sensor is that correct? and he also say he replace the camshaft sensor like 4 year ago and clutch and flywheel replace 15k mile ago
I have this car in this color, a 2006 M5. My mirrors will randomly tilt up/down, when I spray the car with water [doors]. I know where all the fuses are, but have no idea which one controls this, as I have no diagram. Do you know where it is/which one? Thanks....by the way, BMW says all these has Daytime running lights, mine does not, not even a setting in Idrive. Ever seen this?
Thanks for the video quick question is the Icom necessary when using insta nobody will seem to answer me I want to download is the in info I was just wondering what the Icom does?
The common flaws? If so still rod bearings , clutch can be expensive , the getrag manual trans can have bearing issues , and all the usual e39 problems window regulators abs pump etc
I need some help. I have an issue with multiple misfires bank 1. Misfires cylinder from 1-5. Not the coil packs, Ive replaced plugs, ionic sensor, checked my O2 sensors all Working properly. I dont get any other codes.
Hi I love your videos! I just acquired a 2006 M5. Misfire codes on 1,2,3,5 basically almost entire bank. I erase. Codes and limp mode appear within 5 seconds of start. With a scan it just pops up misfire codes Figured I rush the throttle since coils look new. And I tried swapping with driver bank. Don’t know the history of the car 😢 Housings say 2006. I removed gears and in fact they are worn. Definitely a fail Replaced both throttle actuator gears. Cleaned ITBs Ionic modules look original too Anyway. Assembled and it didn’t make a difference. Amazing, no codes for throttle with the worn gears. I’m down to an ionic module. I have one coming in to rule out or hopefully remedy the bank misfire If that fails, am I down to PCM corrosion, broken valve spring or vanos issue? Thanks 🙏🏼
Unfortunately, it’s still misfiring 1,2,4,5 as soon as it starts. Then goes to reduced power Installed ionic module. I will check it out tomorrow, but now noticed Vanos rattle from that bank. Think I need to change those too. But before throwing parts at it I will scan it and verify what’s happening 😔 I’ll watch more videos soon. Drove these cars but never owned one til now I am still willing to learn a lot you and the M5 I own Thanks
Smoke test! after 14 years, bound to be air leaks. save money get a $75 paint can one on eBay. taking parts on and off can fix it or create gaps, so replacing other parts trick you into thinking it was a coil when it was a leak.
These BMW wiring plugs are really finnicky, we were having VANOS codes on the passenger side for the exhaust on an N62 V8 and we literally swapped all of the VANOS solenoids around with a spare parts 7 series vehicle and there looked like there was nothing wrong with the solenoids themselves either, so yeah MAKE SURE YOU FULLY INSERT ALL OF THE PLUGS
Is there ever going to be a time when you can say, “Ok, I’m done with the M5 for now except for routine maintenance, now I can move on to the next project”?

No. You just get the later bearings and it’s sorted. There is so much bullshit on social media from people who don’t actually own one. And sadly a lot more from others who were not willing to pay for thorough maintenance.

Agree this is not a daily driver. I bought mine knowing this. Highly discourage anyone from buying one that is going to be their daily driver.

the icom is faster so you would need it for some programming, but jsut for reading fault codes the cable is fine
