Wat Phu Man Fah - Angkor Wat Copy? - Sihanakhon Temple Complex Buriram Thailand 2024

  • Wat Phu Man Fa is a massive temple being built in Buriram Thailand. This temple has caused some controversy due to its resemblance to Angkor Wat.
Construction started several years ago on a piece of land covering 200 Rai (roughly 100 acres). It features several stone buildings built in the Khmer style. Its resemblance to Angkor Wat has caused a great deal of controversy and the #SaveAngkorWat hastag.
The head Abbot that is the vision behind the project said the styling came to him in a dream. He believes that he was a soldier that was part of the construction of the original Angkor Wat and now is continuing now after entering the monk hood.
The controversy drew the attention of Cambodian officials that were invited to inspect the site. It’s been agreed that it has design elements of many different sites like Phimai and others and is not a direct copy of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
The temple construction continues and is really amazing to see. It’s being built on a scale that is not seen anymore in modern temples. It’s estimated to take generations to be completed.
For additional reading here is some additional reading on the temple.

This temple is near Buriram in Thailand. It has many design elements from Khmer temples like Angkor Wat. Here is a video of Angkor Wat if you want to compare for yourself.

@@sanwa2000 there is styling from many of the temples but the majority of it comes from Angkor Wat. They are a few years away from finishing the inside portion that will contain the central prang and the 4 smaller ones that resemble Mount Meru. The minister of culture of Cambodia visited the site at the beginning of the construction, but there was a Thai monk who was responsible for the project, he took an oath and sweared to Cambodia that this temple is not a copy of Angkor Wat. If that Thai monk behaved honestly, so let’s be and hope there will be no bad thing happening to this temple 💕🙏🙏🙏💕

@@endlessjourneytravels The entrance of the temple, the gallery look like the Angkor Wat architecture and some arts look exactly like Khmer arts of Banteay Srei temple in Cambodia. The Thai monk sweared to Cambodia that he did not copy from Angkor Wat, he said he never lied, but do you know many Thai monks have been behaved very bad lately. A few days ago, a former abbot of a Thai temple was sentenced to 468 years in jail for stealing donation of 300 millions bath = USD$8.3 million. Every year, there’s at least one Thai monk sentenced to jail for stealing donation to buy a private jet, to buy gold and to buy jewelry etc. So, if that Thai monk lied to Cambodia, bad karma will come to him just like those Thai monks were sentenced to jail for lying.

Anyways the reason most Thai people even if they have Khmer ancestry dont call themselves Khmer because they call themselves Khom. Here is the thing in Thailand, we still look down on Cambodian people a lot and its getting a lot worse lately with all the online claiming here and there. Since Cambodian people always say Cambodian = Khmer. Thus most Thai peopld dont want to call themselves Khmer to be related with Cambodian people. That's why they call themselves Khom ie Khmer elitist class. Its crazy eh lol

@@iROChakri what I’m saying is I don’t understand why people call themselves Chinese when they are Thai. I live in Thailand and my wife’s father is Chinese, she is Thai and doesn’t go around claiming to be Chinese. Many Thai people go around saying they are Chinese when they were born here as well as their parents and grandparents. Just look at Chinese new year in Bangkok and tell me this isn’t the case. So if they have Chinese ancestors it’s ok to say Chinese but it’s not ok to say you are Khmer because you have Khmer ancestors. There is more to it than that and not saying it’s because some people claim things online. It goes both ways as well. Thailand claims one thing and so does Cambodia. I don’t care about that because cultures don’t exist in a vacuum, they get influenced from everywhere.

What year did Siam become an independent state? If you say it became Siam when Sukhothai gained its independence that would be 1238. Even then it was a minor kingdom that was incorporated into Ayutthaya a couple hundred years later. The region of Cambodia was under control of Siem for about 6 generations until a land swap with the french allowing for native Thais to be incorporated back into Thailand and other reasons. I don’t see how these later events though make the inscriptions on Angkor Wat Siamese and a Siamese army. Please explain to me.

@@endlessjourneytravels These kingdoms have kinship relations. The northern part of Thailand is Tai Kadai-speaking and has the same DNA as southern China. The central region of Thailand has a DNA similar to the Mon, who were the indigenous people of the Dvaravati period, but after the spread of the power of the Tai Kadai kingdom, the people of the central region changed their spoken language from Mon to Thai, still having a different accent. Confirm in original language Dvaravati was the first group of states to adopt Indian culture before spreading it to other cities in the region. The change of Pallava letters to Mon was done by this group of people. Thai people have two cultures that merge together: Siam and Khom, like Ayutthaya which was a combination of Siam and Lawo. But in fact, according to Chinese records, Funan was separated into Siam and Lawo and came back together in the Ayutthaya period. The story is quite complicated because DNA results confirm that people in Thailand are not only Tai Kadai people, which the old knowledge did not have.

It has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, which formed the basis of the first states. In Thailand, there are hundreds of ancient communities and the Bronze Age and Iron Age were very prosperous. While in Cambodia there are only two communities: Sambor Prai Kuk and Angkor Borey Ban Chiang is one of the oldest bronze cultures in the world. And the DNA from that era matches the people who live there today. In the land of Thailand, there were people who lived before and developed before. I spent some time watching the craftsman doing the stone carvings. One guy that I talked to said he was carving one piece for 4 months. There was a whole team of stone masons as you can imagine doing this, I’m not sure how many but many for a project this large. I read an article from 2021 that said they have spent 1.2 billion Baht on the temple so far. I have no idea where the money comes from but it generally is donated by the local community. The area around it was farmland so it must come in from farther away. I’ve been to temples before that have a rich benefactor that donates as a way to make merit. This could be the case here but I’m not sure.
I really enjoyed seeing this temple. It shows we can still make beautiful things instead of everything just being steel and glass towers with no character.

This Thai temple is a replica of Angkor Wat. The only difference is our temple is more ancient than the Thai temple. Thailand has absorbed so much culture from our history, especially from the collapse of Angkor Wat when the Khmer people were in a vulnerable crisis. This allows the enemies to attack to their advantage easily. Additionally, we have our ancient temple in Thailand, which has given them the chance to adapt to our traditions and culture; they even adopted the name Apsara, derived from the Khmer temple. "Thailand does not have Apsara," now they call it the Thai Apsara dance." Having said that, allow Thailand to dominate us. However, we Khmer people cannot allow Thailand to dominate our culture over our copies of culture taken from our history.

Some of the styling has been taken from Phimai and other sites so it’s not a direct copy but it’s very similar in many ways.

The use of concrete is very minimal. Most of it is the roof over the galleries. They also use rebar to hold it together. The rest is sandstone blocks. Many of the design elements from Angkor is still used but it is different in many ways like the garden area with several buildings and Buddha images. As far as using modern technology that wouldn’t affect it being copied. If you use an elephant to drag a sandstone block or use a modern crane to move it that doesn’t matter. I agree with you that it’s nice that Khmer architecture can inspire. I really enjoyed visiting here. I’ve been to Angkor Wat many times an it’s one of my favorite places on earth to visit.
