The Most Expensive Leather in the World
Shell Cordovan is, to our knowledge, the most expensive leather in the world. It is also one of our favorite leathers to work with! We got a piece of the most expensive leather in the world to make something for a customer, and we decided to document the process.
Shell Cordovan is the most expensive leather in the world for a few reasons. First, the tanning process- Shell Cordovan is made by hand in a process that takes over 6 months. The leather is a membrane found between two layers of horse butt, so it must be shaved down then glazed and hot stuffed by hand. The resulting leather is water resistant, wrinkle resistant, and has an almost self-healing property that, when taken care of, results in a leather item that can literally last generations.
We hope you enjoy our project made with the most expensive leather in the world! - Навчання та стиль
At first I was thinking why would anyone waste shell cordovan on sth like this. Then I realized that perhaps your skills are only limited to making stuff like this.
We hope to make more complicated things one day 🙏
If in I gets my hands on a bit o this, I'm fin to make myself a nice key fob.
Corter Leather check out all the amazing things Slipsch makes on his channel...wait, there’s NOTHING THERE? Some people’s children...🙄
Slipsch not everyone has spent 25years cobbling and is ready to make some wingtips with shell, asshat.
Slipsch, that’s a bit of a dick comment don’t you think. Maybe keep your unproductive comments to yourself. No one is interested in a Trolls advice.
I can’t tell you how relaxing this is, no music, no talking, just peace. Thank you
When your wallet has more value than your bank account
Are you really that poor?
hahahah #TrueFacts in my case!
I have had a pair of Cordovan shoes and boots for almost 2 decades and had no idea what it was until now, I just thought it meant the color but it's actually real Cordovan. It lasts forever and looks amazing.
how much $$$$?
@@Rancholuna I bought them so long ago, hard to remember. I am pretty sure the boots were somewhere in the $700+ range MSRP. The shoes maybe $450 or something like that.
@@venom5809 you buying 700 dollar boots and not wondering why they're $700??
@@WooliteMammoth some people see the forest before the trees
Your videos (especially the one without fancy tools) inspired me to make a wallet for my SO for our anniversary. I made it completely by hand and made a video game inspired design on the outside.
For my first time I am pretty proud. Thank you for the beautiful videos!
Side note: also appreciate the ASMR vibe your videos give off. Love that you put no music in it, just the raw sounds
Denise de Nice can we get a picture of the wallet you made? :)
That video inspired me too, just waiting for the materials to arrive so I can start!
That's so awesome, we're proud of you too! I"d love to see it some time if you'd like to send us a picture :)
@@Corter of course! I will post it on Instagram and tag you, as soon as I give it to my SO (don't wanna ruin the surprise, hehe) ☺️
@Pandu ah yes! He loved it and uses it ever since!
Corter Leather even reposted it on their Instagram feed, it made me so happy!
It's their post from September 15, 2019, here is the link ❤️

Many years ago, I went to a park and there was some city festival thing going on. They had horses and were giving out free rides to kids. They had a horse near the fence, and all the kids were petting the horse through the fence. The only place that was free to pet was the horse's butt, so I went for it. After watching this video, I learned that I just touched a $200 butt. That's probably the most valuable butt I'll ever have laid my hand upon in my life.

once I touched a butt that costs me 1000$ a month now
one time i bought a house for a butt which now hates me and lives in the house without me but i still have to pay for it
@@MajesticSkywhale that happens a lot with emancipated butt society, fk em all
Why was I so tense watching that? Lol. Beautiful job by the way.
Normally I do not like product placement but the way the tool from Weaver was placed and to roll into focus showed such an attention to detail that advertisement became proof of your skills as a craftsman.
Just watching shell get worked with makes me nervous, 100% i'd slip with my beveler and ruin the project. tip of the cap to you sir.
That's some gorgeous leather. You definitely want to make something you'll use all the time with that! 😍
I just can't get over how gorgeous that leather is
my first crappy video Billy I know. I want it. 😍😍😂😂😂😂
Anyone else amused by the fact that the bristles in the brush at the beginning are horse hair?
Wow amazing, so interesting. My new hobby is leather work because of your channel and others. After watching this I have been reading about the history of cordovan leather and it is so cool! Keep rolling out the informative cool videos!
Loved the whole process from beginning to end! Amazing quality.
Another great video. Love the colors and textures you use. Just wonderful. I'm digging the new key chain too! Keep it up!
Really steady hand. Very nice outcome.
This whole process was tunningly beautiful.
Your Logo looks amazing. Hats off.
It would take a master craftsman with confidence too even cut into a piece of art that beautiful only to make something even more beautiful out of it
These videos are always a joy and inspiration to watch.
Thanks so much! Just checked out your channel and oh boy - lots to listen to while we sew an upcoming job :) Your work looks awesome!
@@Corter Gee, thanks! That means alot! :)
@@Corter Your videos led me to pick up on leather-crafting myself. Keep up the great work, friend.
Awesome! I hope you can pick up lots of tips from the videos, if you've got any specific questions just leave a comment - I try to answer anything I can!
Feeling so Satisfied after watching this video, God bless you guys and keep on making more video's 😇👍

LEATHER WALLET
KEY CHAIN
Amazing project and video demo!
Oh, that is beautiful. I had heard the term before, but had no idea, what made this leather so special. Imagine, having a pair of shoes from this 🤗
Thank you for the information and the lovely, peaceful video.
Those are beautiful.
that leather is stunning, what a beatiful product
Absolutely gorgeous!!! 😊
If I ever have cordovan leather, i will frame it and hang it on the wall. Just to admire it.
You have wonderful skills as an artisan of leather.
That keychain is DOPE!
I wanna do this now...you make it look so easy
STUNNING!
Can you please make a video that how to start hand stitches on the leather... ur video are very inspiring....thanks
Beautiful just beautiful
Cool and simple
that;'s so cool!!! I love the key chain~~ they look very great and pretty
So minimalist and very elegant 😍
You make it look so simple
Absolutely stunning, i love anything of quality, well done x
Absolutely beautiful! I hope one day to work with that stuff...👍👍
An excellent video, the sound, the hand made quality, most entertaining
I hope you use those small pieces of leather. I make earrings and I was immediately envisioning earring designs using the bits. I use stones, beads, fasteners, fishing bits, thread, needle tatting, take apart old broken jewelery. I used to sell at local flea markets and in some antique type thrift stores. Hate to see anything lovely go to waste.
3:31 "Ready?"..."Mmm Hmm"
This looks like fun to work with. I haven't gotten any shell cordovan to work with yet. Still not sure what I'd make with it!
Do you have a video about the sharpening methods you use for your tools?
Also, which glue are you using in this video?
Glue looked to be a rubber cement
A work of art!!!!
A true craftsman. Beautiful 👍
That skiving tho, wow!
Thank you for making such a great video
You make it look so easy , and it’s not that easy at all
*Laughs in Genuine Leather*
The end results feels very high quality, that leather is out of this world! I'm sure you would have made a wallet if you had some more of it. I hope to see that happen some day. Thank you for the video!
Liked and subscribed. I am going to try my hand at my 1st project because of this video. Thank you
Cordovan leather is popular in the Archery world. It's often used in tabs, which are hand protection that people use instead of gloves, for drawing the string.
Cool projects. Love leatherworking, but call me crazy, I do not like Shell Cordovan. It looks and feels like plastic to me. Reminds me of corrected grain leather. Granted, I understand Shell will last and will not bubble and wear like CG. I just don't prefer it.
It takes longer to break in which after a while feels amazing
Depends. Horween number 8 cordovan might look like plastic, but the Horween cordovan I have on my Crockett and Jones brogues looks great. Some of the panels are almost like a metallic flake cinnamon. With any wax, the depth is amazing.
The most expensive leather combined with your skill, expertise and attention to detail..... the end result MUST be exquisite!
Love your honesty and passion. From Italy

Can you give details about how you sharpen your instruments in this video? Or may be you have a separate video about this? Especially about sharpening the edger
As always, your sense of taste is a cut above the rest.. Might I ask what gauge thread you used here?
your filming is great
Wow! Lost for words.
great video💖
I like horse butts and I cannot lie
I have a pair of Italian dress shoes and watch strap for one of my watches in shell. I'm hoping to add a shell card holder to my collection one day.
Saddle stitch would really kick it up a notch
Nice I need one
When a horse butt just simply more expensive than your dignity
Could you demo making some leathear glovez?
Hi just wondered what software you use for making your templates and doe it print out 100% in scale. Many thanks.
Any suggested types that are 1-2 notches down from shell cordovan? In terms of physical resistance, even if the aesthetics suffer?
crafting at it's finest
i dont know y i am watching this video in full, even i am not gonna make a leather wallet myself:)
best craftsmanship though.
Santhosh Mooga Knowledge is power.
Amazing
It must be very interesting to work with as a one-off. But would you buy another piece? It looks like it wouldn’t develop a patina for decades. I prefer your products in the leather you normally use.
It patina's beautifully, and it looks about a million miles deep with the hand glazed finish over time. We use it regularly (though not super often) and it's always a treat - though it was nerve wracking the first few times so many years ago!
Cordovan is a very good leather for specific applications such as shoes being the most popular. for the properties listed in the video. It depends how you use your leather though
When you start with something really exceptional and fine and then put big, coarse stitches on it, it cancels the fineness out.
Beautiful work. What kind of stitch are you using? It doesnt look like a saddle stitch.
Was it just me that felt tense when you were cutting that leather 😕😂,turned out really beautiful as always
it wasn't just you - always a tense moment! Thank you :)
Very nice
I'm guessing that this leather is never used to make construction worker boots or other highly stressful wear products, but is mostly wasted on people that work in offices and have a wide selection of expensive shoes that get rarely used. Nice video and skillful as always.
Lots of boots are made from shell cordovan, they're just very expensive. Utility wise, shell cordovan was used for razor strops in barber shops and is still used to make strop boards for sharpening blades today in a smaller capacity
Excellent as always young lady!!✝️⚾🙃
I want that Keychain. My life for a durable, nice keychain.
Good vid. One suggestion..... you could also have skived the bottom crease area to thin the fold.
Hei..what do you recommend for edge finisher product? I've used the fiebing gum tragach but it's turn out it didn't work
That's what we use :) water works fine as well - just something to dampen the edges, then let it almost dry completely before burnishing with canvas
I'm looking at getting some of those Weaver stitching irons. Can you tell me what size/brand needles you use?
Sure! We use john james needles in size 1/0, they're in the first link in the description if you want to grab a pack from Weaver as well!
It takes a brain surgeon's level of nerves working with such an expensive piece of leather 👍
Even the lighter has there own leather case. I want all my personal things to have leather skins too.
Awesome
Hi guys, I’ve been watching your videos for a while now and absolutely love them! You guys always seem to have the right equipment and I can’t always find it. I was wondering if you guys could please tell me where you get your craft knife blades from?!
We use #2 xacto blades, which are a bit larger and more sturdy - Amazon sells big boxes of them :)
Corter Leather thanks for the tip!
I wonder what you do with the scraps
When the UA-cam algorithm finally works. Subbed.
1:33 this is so shiny I wish my future looked like that
Just curious... why did you stamp the key loop before cutting?
the stamp has registration for the cutting die - so the stamp leaves behind a perfect groove for the die to sit in, making the graphic centered every time
Where do you get the custom metal stamp for your logo made?
Its kinda funny that not only is it awesome craftsmanship but also ASMR.
"Shoes made from Shell Cordovan have been known to last 100 years"
Cut to: iphone 7 case
Can you do a video showing how you sew, using both threads? Maybe more slowly sewing???
Search UA-cam for 'saddle stitch leather'. It's the pattern they use in the video.
Hello I would like to know which type of glue do you use mostly
How do avoid having the glu transfer to the leather surface? it looks like you touched it with your fingers at 4:34
I love those specialised leather chisel tools, v satisfying doing it on wood I bet its even nicer with leather
