  • An unusual piece of video: Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier appear on the Michael Parkinson show, which is cohosted by Dick Cavett. The show was taped January 19, 1974, 9 days before Ali and Frazier squared off in their second of three fights. I hold no rights to these images.

      I think they were friends but it's a shame there isn't much footage. Both seemed really down to earth blokes.
      It's a shame for those born in the 90a like myself weren't there to see all what was about then. Which was the last generation of gentlemen.

      Ali was nothing but a racist bigot. A sore loser who did nothing but belittle the great Joe Frazier. And Joe brought nothing but class and integrity to the sport of boxing. Funny how 'the greatest' would have a temper tantrum if anyone called him 'Clay', yet he routinely called Joe an Uncle Tom and a Gorilla. Ali is a despicable excuse for a human being. Smokin' Joe is the TRUE people's champion. A class act all the way. God bless ya Joe!!!

    The great thing about this interview is how Ali shows his greatest asset, which wasn't his boxing ability. It was his head. He hits the nail on so many issues here. He's right that Black kids should educate themselves rather than pursue pro sport careers. He was also right that so many wanted boxing banned but yet auto racing was more lethal and dangerous. Moreover, he was too that those Black movies during the 70's were a "trickbag" to make money. That's why in later years that genre would be called "Blaxpolitation."

    Wasnt much hoopla over the 2nd fight, Big George was the Champ and had stolen the thunder from Ali/Frazier match up, fight fans dug of course but it never got anywhere near the intensity of the first fight for the public. Wasnt really till after the 3rd fight in Manilla that Joe and Ali were the Mt. Olympus of fighting triology's!!! They dang near killed each other and fortunately Futch didnt let Joe come out for the 15th as his eyes were shut for the last half of the 13th and 14th. Ali could have seriously hurt joe since Joe couldnt see the punches coming. Two great warriors, RIP ALI and Smoke!!!

    1 thing i adore about Joe is you never saw him complain about anything, he always focused on the positives. Ali knew how nice Joe was and thats exactly why he was an Ass to him, couldnt take being outshined by a nicer guy.

    Muhammad Ali gives phony AF here…all mouth, all show, very little sincerity. Joe Frazier seemed real and his understandable dislike for Ali seemed genuine. Calling Joe “boy” and “gorilla”? Having gorilla masks and props? 🤦🏾‍♀️

    • @racoobi
      @racoobi 9 місяців тому +9

      I love Frazier infinitely more than I like Ali, but you gotta understand, that was Ali's thing: being the showman. He knew how to play his cards and he did em. That's me talking about the all mouth all show, it definitely worked. No excuses for the gorilla shit, though, I'll give you that.

      Muhammad Ali called Sonny Liston a Bear George Chuvalo the cleaning lady Ernie Terrell the Octopus, Floyd Patterson the Rabbit, and George Foreman the Mummy and Leon Spinks Blackula 👀 Nevertheless all of it was all a part of the act to sell himself and the fight 👀 Also Muhammad Ali was only a man he was under a lot of stress his title had been unjustly taken from him, because he refused induction into the draft 👀 Ali had also been beaten by Frazier and Norton who both got annihilated by George Foreman 👀 Nevertheless Ali was upset about his lost to Frazier and it reflected in his attitude and speech 👀 Ali didn't personally believe Joe Frazier was a Gorilla he said it to promote the fight it was part of his act 👀 There isn't much difference in how Frazier looks than Muhammad Ali's Father or Brother 👀

    • @LadyDuchess
      @LadyDuchess 8 місяців тому +1

      @@claykendall7681 And except for maybe your “cleaning lady” reference, none of those nicknames are rooted in ugly, longstanding stereotypes which caused people to believe Blacks were animals and not human. Ali started calling Frazier an ugly gorilla and an Uncle Tom before their first fight. And I’m sure Ali knew the racial connotation of that bullsh*t but he did it anyway and it got more egregious by their third fight. Yes, Ali _was_ just a man, but one wouldn’t know it by how so many people deify him like he can’t be criticized. 🙄

      @@LadyDuchess before anything was said the real americans took Ali's title in the prime of his career nobody beat him in the ring 👀 Nevertheless Joe Frazier won the title by participating in boxing elimination fights for the title 👀 The claim by the people during that time was that Frazier couldn't be the true champion unless he beat Ali in the ring 👀 Frazier being the confident and proud man that he was helped Ali the best he could to get his boxing license back so he could shut Ali up and the naysayers not, because he liked Ali 👀 Frazier also felt like Muhammad Ali was stupid for not obeying the real americans and he should have known the consequences of going against the real americans 👀 Nevertheless with that Frazier also kept referring to Muhammad Ali as Cassius Clay after he made it perfectly clear that his name was Muhammad Ali 👀 Frazier was pro establishment and following the narrative the real americans loved him and some black folks, but that Era was a time of resistance. Ali knew that the real americans were on Joe's side that's why he was so hostile with Joe Frazier 👀 Nevertheless Ali also spoke highly of Joe Frazier even back then, but Joe was a man who didn't play when he felt disrespected 👀
