      Thank you for watching all the videos! I can't wait for the day I can do UA-cam full time. Currently, one video is usually one day of filming edited down to the most interesting bits. Once I retire in about 8 years, I can spend a few days filming and working on different projects; this will give more variety to the footage and make videos more interesting.
      I'm currently back in Japan where I live and work full time. I'll be editing videos from this mid-September trip for the next few weeks and hopefully posting a video every Saturday morning until I run out of content to edit. I hope that background gives more clarity for you! Thank you again🙇🏻

    My son and I made our one trip to Alaska in September. Had absolutely glorious weather the entire time and spent about 10 days I think. The salmon run was going and it was crazy. They were practically jumping in the boat. This was about 30 years ago I think and my son would have been around 8 years old. My brother was working up there at that time. We went out in the boat and went fishing and my brother assigned one rod to Lucas as his.... Which proved to be a big mistake as Lucas ended up catching a record size salmon for the boat thus far. 35 in long and 17 lb. I believe my brother emptied one of his freezers and I came back with between 50 and 75 lb of salmon fillet to pass out to the family.
    We also got to ride the old White pass and Yukon railroad. The1800s train goes up to the border and back. I believe they were having a ceremony of the investiture of that marvel of engineering as one of the engineering marvels of the world. It was a stunning ride. How I wish to do it again. You and your dad should definitely put it on your bucket list.

    • @OhashiOutdoors
      @OhashiOutdoors  3 місяці тому +1

      Those are special memories! Alaska is beautiful in September and October with all the outdoor activities and changing of season. I'm sure you and your son were also thrilled when he caught the biggest salmon of the trip - 35" and 17 lbs is a massive fish! I always love watching all the freezer boxes going through the Anchorage airport on my return flight, too. There are few foods better than fresh caught Alaskan Salmon fillets!
      I'll do some research on the White Pass Yukon Express; that sounds exactly up our ally. Since marrying a Japanese woman, I've become fascinated by trains, both old and new. The Alaskan Railroad truly opened up the state to a degree after it was built. Thank you for watching and sharing about your personal Alaskan experience! Best wishes to you and your family😊

    Great little cabin in the woods. When you get time you might want to take the door knob out of your front door and turn it over. It’s in upside down. Pins in the lock should be at the top like your deadbolt. This keeps the dirt and dust out of the pins.

    • @OhashiOutdoors
      @OhashiOutdoors  3 місяці тому

      Thank you! That makes complete sense, I'll have to do that next trip! It was such a pain taking the old door knob off making this one fit last trip, I guess we overlooked that finer detail. I haven't installed many door knobs in my time either 😂 I'll make a not in my cabin book and get it done next trip, thank you!

    • @MacDa-yy8xn

      @@OhashiOutdoors you will have to take the lock apart to do this. It’s really pretty simple to do. Get someone to show you how to take the lock apart. I have installed 1000’s of locks. Every once in a while you have to do this. You should be able to do this in 15 minutes right at the cabin.
      Have fun building the deck. I looked up the information on the sea plane. Man that’s an old bird, built in 1952.
      I really like that a gal is flying it as well. She looks like a lot of fun to fly with. Show us some big fish from the lake sometime if you get the chance

    • @OhashiOutdoors
      @OhashiOutdoors  3 місяці тому

      Between UA-cam and some organic mechanical ingenuity, I think we'll get it figured out! Are you a locksmith? I've played around with lock picking off and on since I was in high school. It's a fun, challenging hobby.
      The Beavers are old, but still useful and incredible planes! It's an absolute joy to fly in them. This particular pilot is a home grown Alaskan and it's a ton of fun flying with her. She knows all the terrain features, rivers, lakes, and streams by name.
      There is more fishing videos coming up in the coming weeks! No monsters, but some good sized fish. We hope you enjoy! 😊

    • @MacDa-yy8xn
      @MacDa-yy8xn 3 місяці тому +1

      @@OhashiOutdoors No I am not a locksmith per say, I have been a commercial superintendent for 30 years. Long time ago I got tired of all the sub contractors and suppliers messing up the locks and the lock schedules so I learned how to wok on and key locks. Mostly quickset and Schlage locks. I ended up being able to repair, rekey and cut keys for both of those brands. Did a ton of apartments and assisted living buildings.
      The worst thing for your cabin door lock being in Alaska would be having wind blown water getting into the lock and freezing. Having the pins facing up will help with this problem, but you can still have issues if the locks get wet inside. I live in the cold north eastern part of the USA and master locks in the winter time can be a problem with the cold.
      As for flying around in that old aircraft there is nothing like the sound of a radial engine. They sputter and smoke when they start up, but they have the best sound after they warm up and make power. Nothing else has the same sound.
      It was fun to see you get the Starlink up and running back in the bush. The speed you got were not too good if you were in the big city, but out in the middle of nowhere and you have a useable internet is just pure magic. There was a time when I had to move around a HUGHS NET satellite dish. It was painful as hell every time you had to move it. Had to get it pointed just right, then pass a dish pointing test with the satellite before they would turn it on.
      Now you just take an app on your phone look at the sky and it will tell you if your dish will work, and if so it walks you right through the setup.
      When I was in in Alaska on a long vacation I had a real hard time getting the satellite internet to work because they were floating around in the center of the USA which made them very low in the sky in Alaska.
      Have fun at the cabin. I will make sure to sub your channel so that I can see how your progress goes. Fix the rest of the dock before you fall into the lake with an arm load of groceries 🤣

      That's good information from a man who knows his stuff, tried and true! I'll add a Predator Super Quiet gen to my "future buy" list. It'll be good to have around a future property when when my family and I live in AK full-time. For now, providing my cheap little Wen keeps working, I'm sticking with that because it's already out there 😂

    Had bears chewing my cabin so put bear boards all around the outside. Didn't stop them completely but slowed them down and made them wary.
    Put about 400w of solar panels on the cabin roof and have a control panel and a large LFP batter, but you could use a 1500w(+) power station instead. Makes for reliable power and no noise but below freezing temps are not recommended for the LFP battery.
    Interesting video.👍

      @OhashiOutdoors  3 місяці тому +1

      Thank you! I'll have to some preventative bear/critter measures in the future. Bear boards and window shutters are part of that plan.
      I don't plan on doing any permanent solar/batter set-up until I'm able to make it up there more regularly. I currently live/work near Tokyo. I fear the snow-load on the solar panels would deteriorate their lifespan too quickly.

    Hi Guy
    Just wondering how you like your generator.
    I’ve lived off grid for 30+ years and have always used the Honda 1 or 2000 models. I think they may be quieter than the one you have.
    I have the same set up as you but I actually have the cord coming into the building through a hole I drilled into the wall. I suppose you will do something similar.
    I’ve enjoyed all your videos for over a year now I believe.
    Keep up the good work. I see progress and more comfort each time.

    • @OhashiOutdoors
      @OhashiOutdoors  3 місяці тому +2

      Hello! I have no complaints with the little generator so far. The motivating factor behind this one was the price, and it's ability to ship to HD in Anchorage. I plan on switching over to Honda when I'm living in AK and able to visit the cabin more frequently.
      Eventually, I'd like to wire an outlet into the cabin. This way I can plug the generator in outdoors, and have an outlet in the cabin for charging the EcoFlow, batteries, phones, etc. Very similar to the setup you're running now, from the sounds of it.
      Thank you for watching all of our videos and supporting the channel! We appreciate you 😊

      It's a WEN, from home depot, currently listed for $433 brand new. I got it for under $400 two years ago. I don't think it's as quiet as the little Honda ones, but it's been a great little generator for me thus far. Thank you for watching!

      Yes! I forgot to spray after the last trip, resulting in this gal showing up. The cabin got a good wetting down after my last trip though! We will see if it helps any 😅 thank you for watching!

    Why don't you replace your bear windows with metal ones..? Just wandering. 🤔 love the female pilot. You go girl. 👏👍 So beautiful out there. Thank you for sharing.

      I wan't to re-build the bear shutters on a future trip. Metal ones would be cool, but I'd have to find ones I like the look of. These ones came with the cabin, so I'll use them until I'm able to re-build some. Thank you for watching!

      @@OhashiOutdoorsI guess protecting the door and front windows of the cabin is the highest priority.

    Have ya thought 'bout what ya goin' do ifin' SHTF and the grid is down?? A big full panty would be good to have then, not just a cornor cabinet.

      I often think of that! We'd be pretty screwed at the moment, most likely. We live full time near Tokyo. In the future, we'd love to have a bigger property, bigger cabin, and a large pantry to see us through. Thank you for watching!

      Browning, Strike force Extreme. I've heard good things from people who live in this region of AK. Thank you for watching!

      Thank you! I love those old aluminum Grumman canoes. They are near indestructible and a pleasure to paddle. Thank you for watching!

    Nice cabin, but pretty sparse food pantry/storage for a remote location. Maybe consider dehydrating food and bringing it up? Add 10 lbs of pasta and rice, in case you get snowed in.

      Good thinking! I try to keep as many food smells out of there as possible, as to not entice a bear or other critter from breaking in. Some emergency food is always important though. Thank you for watching!

      @ you could store dehydrated foods in glass mason jars. Food could also be stored in metal tool boxes which lock. Both will prevent food smells from escaping. I saw someone in Churchill, Canada (which is in the polar bear migration path and has a serious problem with them,) set up a couple of bear boards - one on the floor in front of the cabin door and the other att the front of the door. You could make them to slide into a metal track frame for easy installation and removal. Maybe add gate latches too?

      @@Katie105-l3f Good to know, thank you! Bear boards and window shutters are definitely on my list. I should make them more of a priority though - I think they would be a great deterrent. Thank you again!
