  • In this tutorial video I'm collecting Japanese Maple seeds and showing you my method of stratifying for spring planting; from collecting the seeds to storing them in the cold place and everything in between. This is a must watch if you are a beginner Japanese Maple (JM) gardener who is wondering how to grow JMs from seeds, how to grow and discover a new JM cultivar or if you are simply looking into expanding your numbers of JMs. Also for you folks that are looking into grafting JMs, this is the same process of growing your JM seedlings to use as root stocks. Enjoy the video Maple Nutz 🍁🥜

Wow what an amount of mikawa seeds. I'm so jealous 😅 Personally I stopped putting seeds in stratification in october because they always begin to germinate too early (especially with fresh seeds). And it's very tricky to manage with young seedlings in december.

I’m ready for that. With some grow lights, a heating mat and a fan I should be good to go.

@@David-wc5wr not only they can but they do. The fresher the seeds, the faster they sprout in general. Germination can occur after only one month in some cases. You know when it's enough when 50% of the seeds are sprouting.
The best moment to collect seeds is when wings are turning brown but the seed remains green.
Some japanese maples like japonicum and sieboldianum need longer stratification than palmatum

How exciting! My maples don't have seeds but hopefully my boss lets me collect some from his house lol. Good luck and thank you for sharing this video. Very helpful 👍

I read that japonicum seeds take 2 years to stratify. Have you tried any japonicum seeds?

What will happen if you just harvest the seeds and plant them in the soil. Will they germinate?
