Thank goodness we don’t have to rely on all our trees coming from seed! It would take soooo much time to grow the 40 Japanese maples I’ve bought from MrMaple since this June 😉❤️
Forty plants since June! You go gangbusters when you do something. I started in May and now only have 4 maples but have my eye on 4 others but 3 are sold out but left notification email. Good luck with your trees.
Love it. Gonna see about seeds tomorrow. I saw big Bryan out there collecting maple seeds! I actually took a screen shout of you under the Mikawa Yatsubusa. It will be a great example of what decades of growth can be compared to lables at the nursery
Wow.... That's awesome ❗... We appreciate you guys and all of your hard work and most importantly the knowledge that you've developed over the years to encourage and pass on to your customers... TY😀
So glad you guys did this video. I will always buy my JMs from you guys (41 and counting), but I am definitely looking forward to seeing what funky/beautiful seedlings I can find myself, just for fun.
I love how detailed this episode was and of course so fun of good energy🔥. I’m thankful to get this knowledge to learn how to make hopefully some special cultivars some day and share with others. #japanesemaples❤️🍁🔥!
I have a hard enough time getting tomato seeds to a plant and once tried germanium seeds which needed to be refrigerated at least 6 weeks and then moved outside and didn’t get one sprout! I have too many other projects and lack of patience to grow Japanese maples from seeds. I only have 4 Japanese maples for now, just started Spring of 2024, my most recent addition was a “Hot Blonde”from Mr. Maple. Matt & Tim thanks for the demonstration of what it takes to grow Japanese maples from seeds. I will becoming a regular customer but hopefully I won’t become a Japanese maple junkie!
Hi Tim, Hi Matt... Here in zone 6B, we collect seeds on Halloween, October 31st. It's an easy date to remember. I've been successful with growing from seed, and growing from seedlings found under my mature JM's. From spring until Oct/Nov, they grow beautifully... sturdy stems, healthy, supple leaves, and typically 4 sets of true leaves. No applause, please, this doesn't end well, haha! I've been growing JM's from seeds and seedlings for 4 years straight now, and I have never, EVER, had a single JM survive through winter. I've probably lost more than 200 healthy little trees, yet I'm still at it! I have 50 seedlings growing right now, new this spring, and my plan is to ask my local garden center to rent me 2 sq ft to over winter them. $200 bucks if my seedlings are alive in spring! If that doesn't work out, I may need to make a road trip from Buffalo, NY to North Carolina to drop them on the porch of the Nichols brothers! I'll be back in spring to pick them up, haha! Any helpful hints for overwintering would be so appreciated! I feel like I've tried everything! Thanks for all you do! I just purchased two trees from you in the last couple of weeks, and they are spectacular! I couldn't be happier! Thank you again!
Hey thanks. Winter can be tricky on new seedling for sure especially in your area without a greenhouse. Maples need some protection in zone 5 but sheds and basements can be tricky for young tender plants. I would make sure to protect if left outside.
Thanks for the video. I tried growing several Japanese Maple trees from seed this spring after keeping them in the fridge for several months with soil. I have several of them growing in pots. One problem that I had was that I put one of them outdoors and it was messed up by some animal or bird. I have a few other plants that are growing in a mudroom next to a window, but I'm afraid to put them outdoors until they get much larger.
Pretty cool guys! I had no idea about the 2 year stratification deal for some. I probably have over a thousand seedlings and trees up to 9 years old. My intent has been Bonsai but I think some would make very nice garden trees. Older trees are from a mother Filagree Maple. Other polinators might be Norway Maple and Acer Macrophyllum (I'm a Pacific Northwest guy). There is tremendous variability in vigor. About 10% or less have Filagree tendencies. I'll have to look at more of your videos and learn more things.
Our 30+ year old Japanese Maple produced so much seed this year, I'm in zone 6a. I just filled one of those gallon bags with fresh seed, if it wasn't for the on and off droughts this year I probably would have gotten 2 filled or more, since there are thousands left that are dry.
Love this video. Can you do a follow up when the seedlings need to be transplanted as this will be great. I usually have good success getting the seedlings to germinate but have trouble getting them through my hot dry summer. Will transfer them this year as it is late spring in my area.
Thanks for this awesome informative video on how to collect and grow from seed. I love how you teach us to be successful with everything so we gain knowledge and more confidence to take on things like this ourselves. Thank y’all for the wealth of knowledge that y’all share with the Maple community, I believe I can say it really means alot to all of us. 💯💯💯 #bestinthebusiness #japanesemaples
Im trying this right now you have any tips? Iv been keeping mine in the window where they just get a little morning sun. Do you keep yours outside or in the house?
@@nathandane1572 They come up in the spring so I just plant them in a small container outside and keep them in indirect sunlight until they get established.
@@nathandane1572 I've done the same (Buffalo, NY zone 6B) and I currently have 50 seedlings in a large tray of peet, perlite, and garden soil mixed. They've been in the tray for about 3 weeks and the majority have their first set of true leaves. Some say not to take them from the ground until they have their first set of true leaves (to allow better roots to develop) but I haven't had any problem. I keep a wire mesh over the top to keep birds and squirrels out, and I keep them in a shaded area outside that doesn't get harsh wind. (I'm near lake Erie). I watered them in really well, and now just water them when I see the soil on top has dried out. Some people leave them in the same tray all summer, and some will tell you to pot them in 4 inch pots when their second sets of leaves start showing. I do pot them up in their own pots, but it's a lot less convenient when you want to move them. I allow them to be in the sun in morning and late afternoon for maybe an hour or so a day.
What are your ideas of planting acer palmatem root stock in july? for zone 8 am I to late and can I keep them stratified in the fridge tell next spring please let me know your thoughts I'm in portland oregon
I would like to germinate Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) seeds next year because I ❤️ Norway Maple trees, they look very pretty. I will do this experiment that is stratification and without stratification. I will check which method is the best for germinating Norway Maple seeds. These seeds do not require scarification because the seeds are not hard, it is very soft. This year, I will collect Norway Maple seeds in fall season and then when I go home, I will store them in the fridge before germination. I would like to keep the seeds cool and dry once I store them in the fridge before germination.
@MrMaple: Captan is illegal here in the Netherlands. Would powdered sulfur work? Or can you recommend something different? Thank you for the great video. I'm definitely going to try planting some :-)
How much of the Captan Fungacide did you add to the bag of seeds before you started to shake them. I believe this was the step you did right before you placed the seeds in the soil trays. Thanks for the top notch information and the contagious enthusiasm. Makes me want to get at it.
I've been getting more into cloning and grafting, and always wondered why Japanese maples were done that way? I totally get keeping that exact genetic from the mother plant but why don't people start f2 seeds more?? Who cares if it's not exactly what you expect. They're all beautiful in there own right. Any way y'all do a great job explaining all this stuff in great detail. Helps tree nerds like myself learn as much as we can. Thanks 🙏
I have run across a lot of Japanese maple trees here in zone 8a that never put on seed. What would be the reason for this? I'm in southeastern NC. I used to see you guys every year at the Mother Earth News show near Ashville.
A commercial grower friend would just add another heavy layer of seed each year to the same bed, hoping some more would sprout the second or third year. Other species trees would usually have the whole seed bed dug at once.
I love to grow japanese maple from seeds. I'm using the same method. I don't know how to select them after. Seedlings are so different, why selecting this one and not the other? Could be great to show the process of selection
Unless you plan to sell them, you can pretty much base your choices on what looks interesting to you. A really pretty leaf shape, or maybe a color you don't already have. Changes may still occur, but by about the 4th set of true leaves, I have a good idea of which look the most interesting (and of course healthy) to me. Not trying to answer for the pro's, just sharing an idea.
@@MrMapleShow Thanks for answer me. I'm new on the japanese maple (JM) world. As a genetic plant breeder student I understand the concept of variability, but I didn't expected that JM had so much genetic variability. I'm from Brazil and I managed to get some JM seeds from Austria, seeds from 4 different kind. Sango Kaku, BloodGood, Osakazuki and FernLeaf Maple. I was surprised when the seeds from the Sango Kaku variety start to germinate inside the refrigerator. The seeds from other varieties don't germinate in the refrigerator, so I move them to a colder place (35°F-41°F), let them there for 3 months and 10 days. One seed from the Osakazuki variety started to germinate in that condition, after that I toke all the seeds out of the cold, I hope they start to germinate. The seeds look healthy, but I afraid that 3 months are not enough.
Yes, you can store them in an unheated garage. Be sure to still water them. We water roughly twice a month during dormancy when it is above freezing temps.
I sprout Tridents the same way. Experimented a couple years ago with dry seeds soaked overnight. About half sunk. 20 floating seeds sprouted one. 20 sinking seeds sprouted about 16. Soaking in warm water was not better than cold water. Dry seeds left outside in winter sprouted about 10, since about half would have been 'floaters".
