I would like to salut my beloved public, my public that first heard my singing in those good
and bad years of greece that we suffered a lot, and i would like also to say
that there was nothing wrong for me and for you
(because she didnt sing at the first of the two concerts that were to be given)
unfortunatelly i am not used to this climate, dry weather and hot air, a little bit exhausted, a little
bit sad, but i will surpass everything because i have worked hard and i can tolerate everything.
I am sad because i didnt sing at the first concert of the festival because my
throat was sore (strained), that happens to everyone, i could try to sing but i wouldnt sing well.
I am sure you wouldnt want that because i want to give everything of myself to you, the people
that i love and you love me.
On the contrary, let me tell you that if i wanted to give my best in Italy and worldwide,
here in greece i want to be absolutelly perfect
(in spite of the hatred she endured by her colleagues she speaks so gratefully...brava Maria)
maybe give more of what you even imagine. I dont know what i want of myself, because everyone says
that is satisfied of my art, but i am never satisfied of myself. Imagine if i am not well
and i feel that i cannot perform, even that little of me that i can give (modesty at its peak!)
(free translation: i feel i never perform well, so imagine if i am sick and i defenatelly feel i cannot
give my best, i prefer not to sing at all)
I would also like to ask you of something else, on Monday, because everyone says that i give
everything of myself and that my voice is a miracle, dont beleive all that.
They say i am a miracle, i cannot do anything else but sing, dont have high expectations because i dont
know what you want of me and what you imagine of me in your minds. This frightens me because i am
umana, i am human...with feelings because i want to sing for you my best.
Accept what i am with happiness dont expect a miracle, i dont know how and cannot please you.
Well all that bitterness comes from my effort to be good at my art.
I hope i will please you on Monday. Its true i am sad from all the things that happened on my arrival
for the festival. Many were against me unfairly, nothing depends on my decisions, Mr Mamakis brought
me here so that i can sing for you. I know nothing about politics.
I am sorry that the press mixed me (she couldnt pronounce the word and the interviewer
helped her pronounce it) , sorry for my greek that i havent spoken for so many years,
with politics and all that fuss (the press and the opponent party were all against
the government about her fee and the money spent for the athens festival at that time. Her name became reason
for political attacks in the greek parliament) because we artists dont have such borders we belong to the public
and i especially belong to the Greek public. Because, i am married to an Italian, all the world gave me glory,
but my blood is Greek and that cannot be erased.(well her fathers house outside of Athens is about to become
ruins, no memory of hers in all Athens, or a Sculpture or something to remind of her.....nothing to be said more)
I thank you first of all, colleagues, relatives, not all of course, one or two maybe not be good to me
but i have good friends amongst them...that i am sorry that i havent seen them yet because i dont want to
be emotional, i wouldnt be able to even speak to them because its so many years that i havent met them.
On Monday if you are satisfied i will be the most happy person in the whole world.
Now i would like to thank the public and colleagues that took my part in that fuss, people that
i know and i dont know that sent me letters and flowers with such good words of compassion.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart and i hope to please you and give you my regards on Monday night
with my singing. Pray that i am well for that night, as i pray too.
After the concert i will come back to the radio to say a few more happy words i hope.
    (she dint give an interview)
I salut you and i kiss you all, goodbye.
(She recorded that message at the hotel Grand Britain in Athens, which still exists..)
Sorry for any mistakes! i hope you can manage to understand what i wrote!
    cheers!

+george pangeo Thank you so much, George! I assume you are a native speaker of Greek so I have a question... I wonder if Maria had acquired a foreign accent after so many years living outside of Greece. To my ear, her English sounded a little weird and, at times, not very grammatical. Do you hear an accent or awkward sentence construction when she speaks Greek? Does Maria sound like any Greek woman? I'd appreciate it if you could answer this question. Again, thank you fro your translation.

    • @papaki88
      @papaki88 9 років тому +18

+nohaylamujer yes she defenatelly has an accent and awkward sentence construction at some points, but she can be thoroughly understood by any native greek person :)
the thing that is stuck to my mind is that she pronounces heavily some consonants, according to a dialect used in the region of Peloponnese, the origins of her father and mine :) ...for example.... 4:16 'lega peo haroumena loghia' which means 'a few more happy words'...the word lega ...the l letter she pronounces it like the italian gli....it is common in the folk dialect of peloponnese... :) i am fascinated by it .... because the letter l is pronounced like the word little....like the word....at 4:12 senavleas....which means concert.... the l is pronounced accurate there....but a bit later she pronounces it like gli in the word legho....i hope you understood my meaning :)

She speaks Greek almost completely fluently but with a Venetian/Veronese accent. This is evident in the way she pronounces the word "umana". Do not forget she was born in New York City in 1923, lived in Greece from 1937 and during WW2, returned to the States in 1945, went to Italy in 1947 for her international debut as Gioconda at the Arena di Verona, and married a Veronese businessman in 1949. Very moving to hear her state that although she is Italian by marriage (yet she kept her American citizenship until 1966) her blood is indelibly Greek...she spoke the language much better during the Onassis affair. Her French was excellent and her English, with a slightly American accent, sounds very odd, like someone had learned it by tape on Mars!

@arvedsin You can hear a very American accent in her 1973 interview with Mike Wallace. Maybe she was just relaxed enough to fall into her native American accent because she was free at that moment from the tensions that could be provoked by the snobbery and posturing she was subjected to in her younger years.

  • @CalifaJohn
    @CalifaJohn 13 років тому +2

@arvedsin Actually, she had a distinctly American accent early on. Naturally, she was born and raised in the US until her teen years. Later on, she developed her own accent in English as a result of the mix of international influences she had from being an international figure using so many different languages. Her French sounds to me like a mix of American and Eastern European accents. Her accents were as unique as she was.

Your reply to him was to say it would have been odd for her to speak with that accent as a child in Queens, which was not his assertion.

María had a superbly excellent Italian accent, as if she was a native speaker. It was amazing what her ears were capable of doing (because accent depends on your ears, in first place) ..

    • @ThreeJolie-k7g

Native Italian here: her Italian wasn’t perfect and she had more of a Balkan accent, probably mostly Greek, when speaking Italian.
This isn’t absolutely a dig at Maria who was genius for speaking four languages so well but truth to be told you hear more a Greek accent than a veronese one, even though you can hear she spoke in a northern Italian type of way. Watch the interview with Pasolini about Medea in Rome you’ll hear the difference between their way of speaking (he was northern too even if from a different region). Her Italian worsened a bit when she was living away from Italy but she was still mastering Italian complex structures albeit with little imprecisions. She was truly good at languages! I’d be very curious to know if she understood veronese dialect (meneghini’s siblings sometimes commented on her in tight dialect). She probably was able to but unfortunately we cannot ask her anymore.

@@ThreeJolie-k7g dear you clearly haven't got a clue what a 'Balkan accent" is. First of all, She has not a greek accent at all since not even in greek sha hasn't a greek accent AT ALL! She has a mixed accent , typical of someone who hasn't lived only in one country the majority of their life, but in many countries equally and has used many languages equally. Secondly, there's no such thing as a "Balkan accent". I mean dear god. You are our neighbour and you haven't got a clue about us?! Us Greeks have a unique accent all on our own. Slavic people like Bulgarian and Serbian etc have an accent all of their own and most of them can never speak greek without a very heavy Slavic accent. Albanians have an accent all of their own, and most of them can never speak Bulgarian or Greek without their very heavy Albanian accent. Our accent has very slight similarities ONLY with Spanish and a bit less with Italian. Definitely NOT with other Balkan accents and not with any other European accent, for that matter . Thirdly and most importantly, Maria's Italian is rather immaculate. Us Greeks speak Italian with a clearly greek accent, she has far more of an Italian accent than anything else and she speaks without any mistakes at all.

    • @ThreeJolie-k7g
      @ThreeJolie-k7g 20 днів тому +1

@@felicegreece yes i have to admit I don't recognize eastern /balkan european accents when speaking different languages (i.e. italian or english) and i'm even less familiar with greeks' way of speaking as i haven't had the luck to get to know a greek person in real life yet (it's flattering that you consider us your neighbors tho, never thought of it this way). I was responding to the answer that said she had a veronese accent, she didn't or, even if some hints are there that's not what you primarily hear in her speaking. In my opinion she sounds as somebody who comes from an eastern eauropean country (Balkans but also Russia or Romania) but i didn't word it like this because sometimes it's used in a derogatory way in Italy (why? I have no idea). She doesn't sound spanish while speaking italian but sometimes the greek language sounds a bit like spanish yeah. Re her italian: it was great but she did some little mistakes here and there especially when she moved away, I didn't nitpick her grammar because there's no point but for instance sometimes she'd forget the article or said some expressions you shouldn't use ("un po' tanto vecchio..." you don't say that as it's a contraddiction, "ma però" again you shouldn't say that). They were really small mistakes though. One would argue that Maria's italian was still better than some of our very national politicians' and I couldn't agree more, but shame on them. Do you know if there are other interviews of her in greek? I don't understand it but it's nice to hear (with her gorgeous voice even more).

Μόνο η αξεπέραστη και η ανεπανάληπτη μουσικής της αλήθεια, την έκανε την απόλυτη Diva. Η Μαρία Κάλλας πάλεψε πάρα πολύ για να μπορέσει να επικοινωνήσει, απόλυτα με τον κόσμο, το μεγαλείο της μουσικής και να φτάσει "στο πιο ψηλό σκαλί στης ποιήσεως τη σκάλα".
