- This was Maria Callas' farewell concert in London in 1973. It was held at the Royal Festival Hall. She sang with Giuseppe di Stefano. They were accompanied by Ivor Newton. The programme is:
1. Verdi, Don Carlos, Act II duet
2. Lalo, de Roi D'ys, Vainement ma bien aimé (di Stefano solo)
3. Poncinelli, La Gioconda, Suicidio (Callas solo)
4. Bizet, Carmen (duet)
5. Mascagni, Cavalliera Rusticana, Voi lo sapete (Callas solo)
6. Mascagni, Cavalliera Rusticana, Tu qui Stanuzza (duet)
7. Puccini, O Babbino caro (encore, Callas solo)
One of the very few artists who knew when to end her career on a high note. A great soul who the world did not deserve.

@Silversled If true,then that's what damaged her voice. I don't understand why people think it's a mystery. Smoking can destroy your voice almost beyond repair. A sopranos nightmare.
Her voice did not go anywhere. It matured and time added a warmth and humanity to it that made it a million times so much better. You can finally connect the voice and a human. It's beautiful. Brava! Brava! BRAVA!
She was 50 years old at this time. She had lived 5 decades full of success and admiration as an opera singer, but also full of misery in her personal life. Yes, her voice had changed and was not as perfect as it was in her prime, but she remained a great artist until the last moment.
Let me say this again. Mario Callas was the Soprano of Sopranos. And what physical beauty. Her smile could bring the Angels to earth.
There will only be One Maria Callas…..She has marked the history of Opera for ever …….

She sings "O mio babbino caro" with only the remains of her voice. And yet no other singer has made the text as understandable to me as she has. She not only sings, she tells a story ... There was only one Callas.

Actually, her voice greatly improved in later dates of the tour. Especially the ones in Japan where she sang arias in their original keys. She was actually retraining herself for a comeback before her death. She never actually lost her voice, it was her confidence that got badly shaken by the pressure of fans, critics and she put on herself. Just when she was starting to find again, she died.
As an elderly voice teacher in Boston said at the time: "It was worth the price of admission just to see Callas walk out on stage."

Still more than 40 years after her death she is the best selling classic vocalist and searched and streaming digitally more than any other opera singer. People go to the opera not only to hear "good singing ". For each of her detractors she has thousand of admirers. She is a legend.

She died of a broken heart. Her baby son from Onassis died shortly after birth. She left her first husband to be with Onassis who married Jacqueline Kennedy. Tragic and sad. Her gift and talent made her the most talented opera singer.
I was just 19 yrs old when I heard her on her farewell tour in Los Angeles and it was historical to be in the same space with her. Her vulnerability and the love poured forth from us the audience was unlike anything I've ever encountered. Was her sound perfect? No. It didn't matter to her adoring fans.

Even when her vocal cords were tired after all these years of so many extremely stunning and flawless performances of hers, even then she once more, she delivers perfection and for all of you who criticized her voice about not being at its best, the only way, even for the best of you, to reach 1/3 of Callas vocal ability is only possible if Callas was mute.

Her voice got better by the end of the tour. Watch the performance from Tokyo to see. So her voice was far from her zenith but the sheer magnitude of her acting and stage presence more than made up for it. She could have stood there and read the phone book and people would still have packed the auditorium.

People always say this was Callas 'not at her best.' I just do not get that. She still makes me cry. I find this so intensely moving. The fact that she's perhaps 'imperfect' makes it even more human and heartwarming. AND...who on Earth are those zombies in the audience who can't be bothered to stand up for this legendary woman who gave and gave to her fans???? They should be ashamed. I would have been cheering at the top of my lungs.
Her voice was gone here, no power or pitch. The beauty of this is that we get to see the "naked" artist, behind that voice that clothed it.
