This year has been my 1st year homeschooling 3 different grades, with a toddler in the mix. I'm sharing what our homeschool schedule (more of a routine) looks like and how I write out each child's school day so they know what needs to get done each day.
I don't have scheduled times, we just aim to start the school day at 9 am and do the next subject. Having an order to the day has really helped me (and the kids) to kind of get it done rather than flounder around wondering what's next.
We've played around with doing our family style subjects first and individual subjects like math last. And I've also tried doing individual subjects 1st and family read aloud subjects last. I don't think for us that there's a winner...but what has made the biggest difference is having a flow that's similar every day.
Writing it all down list style for each grade helps me to remember what to do, without the burden of having to plan ahead. We just do the next lesson for each subject!
My 3rd grader and 2nd grader's lists are almost identical...with the only difference being my 3rd grader has spelling added.

Great job! This was very helpful and has pushed me to write it down.

Awesome! It makes a big difference! Even today I asked my daughter what was left on the list. It helps my foggy brain finish the day sometimes!

This was helpful! New subscriber. I have a 9, 5, 3, 1 & new baby coming in the Fall. So I'm right there with you. We use Saxon, Math With Confidence and im plugging away through the book The Reading Lesson with my 5 year old. But I need to keep it simple and focus on the core subjects &skills. I like the idea of adding read aloud specifically for my 5 year old. She gets lost in the mix! Plus toddler & baby chaos. I think my son would enjoy the Bravewriter projects. He needs some fun writing encouragement

Congratulations on baby number 5! I should be taking advice from you! I'm also lax with my 5 year old. More so with him than I was with my others when they were 5! But I'm also seeing (more now than I did then) how much my kids learn naturally as they age and how much easier it is to teach certain things when they are older. We took a few months off of my 5 year old's math when it got too hard, and when we came back I couldn't believe how much easier it was for him. It just clicked and the only thing that changed was 3 months went by. Hope ya'll have a great year!

Yes I have noticed the same with my 2 oldest. Take a break and their brain grows instead of struggling through.

I think this comment got deleted because I used a link but the podcast Sinply Convivial has an episode on getting the school day started. Its from October 2022. She talks about the same things you're talking about here. I struggle with the same as well, just getting going. I'm going to be implementing a start time and morning time, neither of which I've really done. It all comes down to mom being disciplined.... which is hard for me. Of course it all goes out the window with a new baby but I have good intentions. 😆

Thanks for suggesting the podcast for others to listen to too. Yes lots of grace after a new baby, or any life change really! The consistency of a start time has really helped me be disciplined to get going.

Was this before you switched to AO? Or after? If its before you started using AO, I would love to see or read how you schedule all your kids and what your day looks like following AO! I feel like my schedule just for my 1 kiddo that's in school seems so complicated to fit in all the subjects and yours looks so simple (in a really great way!) Thanks!

This is actually before we started AO, but we still use something very similar to this! I'd be happy to do an updated video of our daily lists for each grade. The main difference is that they now each have around 3 daily scheduled reads from AO plus narrations, and our history is no longer together. We use some audiobooks to help make AO more independent. We still start the morning similarly around 9 with family bible/hymn/1 poem/1 chapter of a read aloud. And each child still has copywork, math, and silent reading time. I'm figuring out how to switch some things up using Ambleside Online to fit our family, and how to get my oldest 2 more independent.

@LizBlueandHazel thank you! I've been loving following you and your journey with AO. (And homeschool in general). You're a few years ahead of me (I have a 6 yo, 3 yo, and 1 yr old), so I'm just gleaning so much from you! Do you have any rhyme or reason to how you're breaking up the weekly readings each day? I'm probably over thinking it, but I'm detail oriented and there's so many different readings that I feel like my brain needs some kind of system to know which readings I need to do which days. Planning it makes my head spin lol 🤪

We broke up the readings by picking about 3/day per kid. I’d see how many reading chunks there were on the schedule that week and divide it up by 5 days. My year 4 ended up having more like 4/day, and my year 1 had about 2 per day. I’d just pick out the books and lay them out in front of their bin. Some of the page assignments for a book are too long to read in a sitting so I’d spit it up into two chunks instead of 1. We wouldn’t move on to the next week’s readings until all of them were crossed off the schedule as complete.

I just added the link to them in the video description! Also, you can check out my video in the description on how we use them and what they look like.

I like the idea of just doing history and just doing science alternating. Hmmmm.....
