We switched my 5th grader to Math Mammoth level 4 from Singapore Math Primary 2022 (he'd finished 4A). It has been one of the bets switches in our homeschool and here's why!

Here's an update on how the first half of the year has gone for my 5th grader, 4th grader, and 2nd grader using mostly Ambleside Online. This is our 2nd year using AO and our 2nd year switching to a mostly Charlotte Mason homeschool. We have thinned the books for my 4th and 5th grader, leaving out Age of Fable and some of my 4th graders literature reads ( I've combined her with literature books...
Why We Waited Till 4th Grade To Begin Spelling (Using All About Spelling)
Переглядів 5433 місяці тому
This is my second time going through level 1 of All About Spelling! My first time I waited till my oldest was in 3rd grade, when he was a proficient reader and began showing a need for spelling and writing. With my second kiddo I waited till 4th grade. She was a later reader but an earlier writer. So while she wanted to write more, words didn't look as correct to her because her reading wasn't ...
Math Mammoth Vs Singapore Math Primary 2022: Why We're Switching For 5th Grade
Переглядів 1,6 тис.4 місяці тому
See why we're switching from SIngapore Math Primary 2022 to Math Mammoth for 5th grade. We have used Singapore Math Primary 2022 with my son since the middle of his 1st grade year. It went pretty well (just needing to pause to work on math facts here and there) until his 4th grade year when I began to consider switching math programs. Singapore Math became too much for me as a teacher. With 3 y...

Daily Chores For Kids Ages 10, 9, & 7 With Free Canva Template

Here's our daily chore/cleaning list for my kids and how I hope to take a few things off my plate! We needed some specific jobs for each kid (ages 10, 9, 7) and the summer is a GREAT time to practice. I was just randomly asking kids to do chores, and trying to remember who did what last. It wasn't working, and so we're spending the summer to get routines down that will help so much when the hom...
End Of Year Update Ambleside Online: What We We're Changing & What We Liked
Переглядів 3,1 тис.7 місяців тому
Here’s an honest update as we finish our first year using Ambleside Online with 3 kids. It was challenging, beautiful, frustrating at times, and full of beauty too. Come see what we liked, didn’t like, what we’ll keep or change, and if we’ll continue with it all next year. My biggest struggle was the amount of time it took us, and the amount of readings. It left us feeling little zeal for more,...
Grade 3 Math With Confidence End Of Year Review

Here's my review of Math With Confidence Grade 3. We're finishing up the year and I'm amazed at the simple and yet solid math fact practice we've received using this curriculum. Kate Snow has made year 3 slightly differently than year 1 & 2, which I share in the video. It follows her same great style with a few slight changes to the "schedule" and goes from 2 to 3 pages/day...offering 1 additio...

You convinced me to try MM and we are loving it after coming from Saxon then Singapore then Saxon again. Singapore is so exasperating and it makes me feel like an idiot, as an adult, that I just cannot explain it the way they want for my son. MM has been so much more straightforward but also engages the brain better than Saxon and supplies strategies to actually think through and develop number sense.
So glad to hear your experience! Thanks for sharing. I can 100% relate to not being able to teach or understand Singapore Math and feeling confused all the time. Math Mammoth just explains concepts so well.
Thank u this helped a lot I’m so happy I finally know how to make bracelets !
This is helpful. I use MWC with my kids and I wonder about switching to something like Singapore in the future. Because I think the games will get old, and just take too much time to teach. But when I looked at Singapore I got confused by the teachers manual so I'm glad someone else is saying the same thing,!
Yes I can relate! I think switching to Singapore late in the game could also come with extra problems not having learned “their way” of teaching earlier. For sure by 4th grade bar modeling is a huge skill used all the time with Singapore and would be harder to learn later. Math Mammoth is dry but does a good job making this teachable and understandable!
I feel like we are kindred spirits! I am going to start Ambleside next year and had some of the same concerns that you shared after finishing it! I want to implement some of what you shared. What ia the cite where you got the handicraft box?
O excited for you! We changed up some things this year and it’s gone so much better. I talked about that in my video I just put out called “Mid Year Update”. Here’s my affiliate link to the Cozy Crafter Crate subscription we used. It should give you $5 off a box! accounts.cozycraftercrates.com?r=1310083&s=21326
I'll have to watch that! After watching this video I got some good tips for trying not to be overwhelmed. My girls will be 6 and 8 and I plan to put them both in year 1 for starters and adjust as I go! My son will be 4 so I will add him in later. Thanks for the craft box link!
So i have a question since you ''Made your own card'' does it show up under your cards or does it stay under playlist? i dont seem to see my made card under my cards???
It will be listed under the “My Playlists” tab. The “Cards” tab will only have cards that you have purchased from Yoto that are not make your own cards. Hope that helps!
@LizBlueandHazel it is and thank you! Loved your video btw!
Thank you soo much I hated math but know I love it😂
So glad!
I have just switched my 4th grader over to MM from TT. I loved Teaching Textbook, but it became very overwhelming for my daughter. Also it seemed to just move too quick for her. My 2nd grader has been doing MM and absolutely loves it. I didn't realize though that TT was actually behind MM and had to bump my 4th grader down to Grade 3 part way through.
Good for you for switching things up if you need to. I hope that it’s a good fit for your 4th grader. Each kid is so different it’s hard to know! I think you’ll be happy you bumped down. That way some things may be review while others are new and it’ll help with any gaps. Be sure to check out the free videos if you want help teaching certain topics. They are pretty good!
My kid could handle math mammoth explanations and problems, but multistep procedures wouldn’t stick in the long run without that MWC style daily spiral review.
That makes sense. I also really appreciate the spiral review for my other kids in Meth With Confidence and do wonder how much of an issue that could be with Math Mammoth.

Where did you get all your books
A lot of the books I got on Thrift Books, while some were new from Amazon or Rainbow Resources. There are also used books constantly being sold on Facebook groups titled “Ambleside Online/Charlotte Mason resale books” or something similar.
Great review! We are loving math mammoth as well - switched from MWC to grade 1 and grade 2 Math Mammoth with my two learners. So we use the mixed reviews once the chapter lessons are done and then I have my kiddos take the chapter test the next day. If they miss a lot on the chapter test, I will then have them do just the chapter review for additional review of the topics they missed in the test. Fortunately they have been doing really well with MM so they have done great on the tests and we haven’t had to really use the chapter reviews 🙌 I really enjoy watching your videos!
Thank you for sharing how you use the tests and what you switched from! I’ve never used MM with younger kids so glad to hear it’s still followable and working well.
I wanted to love Math Mammoth but after 2 months of daily tears and dread I finally threw the towel in and switched curriculums. My 7th grader switched to Denison Pre-Algebra and has been LOVING math again and my 4th grader switched to Oak Meadow and really enjoys it. I occasionally add in a page or two Math Mammoth after we cover it in OM. He does better with the way OM approaches concepts, MM approach to new concepts really confused and frustrated him. My toddler is starting Kate Snows Preschool Math at Home and then I plan to use MWC for K-6th
O man. I understand the tears and dread because that was us last year with Singapore Math level 4. Good for you for switching to what you and your kids need. I have heard of Denison math for pre algebra and it’s on my radar for my oldest when we get there! Glad to hear a good review! We are huge fans of Math With Confidence too…you have a lot of fun coming your way with how that one is taught!
Just got this player from my kids and this video was super helpful! Thank you!
So glad! You’re going to love using it.
Thank you so much for mentioning the folks and hymns UA-cam channel! That was definitely a weak point in our Charlotte mason studies. I’m thinking this will turn things around for us! 💕
You’ll love her channel! We even ended up subscribing to her patreon account so I could download the songs and put them on our yoto. But it’s also just so easy to go to her UA-cam channel and click the hymn and folk song for the day. Enjoy!
We have not gotten to science 😭😭😭..luckily they are in a STEM based enrichment but at home it’s a struggle. We are doing well with Math and LA…so that’s a win. Thanks for sharing
I know! It’s so hard for us too. I feel like we need to make science more fun! Not just reading books on topics. Math and LA are huge wins so good job!
it keeps falling off it keeps falling off
Thanks 👍
❤❤❤❤
I love your videos. I have so much makeup and bracelet.
just this title makes me happy, knowing that someone else has thought the same thing! if im teaching phonics , why do i need spelling in 1st grade lol
Exactly!! And it’s worked out fine! It’s saved me so much time and anxiety. Glad you feel the same way!
Did you also get the teachers book? Or did you feel that it was or not needed?
Not needed at all. We’ve never used them. There are some UA-cam videos showing what’s in them and what people thought of them. I’d skip buying though.
Than you so much for this tutorial it helped so much❤
Thank you so much for sharing exactly how you did it! I have bee wanting to start one but unsure of pages per century and such to use and even wherento start. I didnt not want to have to go back and restart it too do thank you for being so clear.
Awesome, glad it helped! When I was searching I found it hard to find examples of actual dates on paper timelines too. Especially since I didn’t want 30+ pages in our timeline!
Thank you for sharing your update, it was encouraging to hear how your daughter was able to increase her independent reads this year, that's something I am nervous about with my oldest son who is in third grade. I think you did a great job of assessing how your year went and picked good ways to make it work for your family. :)
Yes, it can be scary to picture the year ahead without being able to imagine the leap in reading, independence, ease of writing, etc. Audio is also a huge help! I think even as my kids get older and read more scheduled books on their own, audio still relieves the mental load compared to reading everything!
Thank you! So helpful and encouraging.
I’m so glad!
TYSM❤❤❤
What is the name of the lady (and website) you use for the hymn and folk song
I just added the link to the description but here is the link here too. She and her husband make videos together. We are also now paying for her patreon membership listed on her youtube page description which lets you download the mp3 files. I then add those to a make your own yoto card! youtube.com/@folksandhymns5313?feature=shared
Thank you! I’ve been waiting for an AO update from you🙂 My second grader is a struggling reader and I really appreciate hearing similar stories. For us, I’d say history, math and picture study have been super solid the last year and a half but it’s nature study I wish we were more intentional about! And I can’t wait for my second grader to be reading😞
You’re def not alone with a “later” reader! So much progress can be made in a year! Good job staying consistent with those 3 subjects. For nature study, it’s always good to ask what has kept it out of rotation. Lack of easy to find info, or lack of it being on the schedule, or lack of outside time being intentional to observe what you see, etc. That’s us too right now so I get it!
Hi! Just wanted to say i have a second grader doing Y1 with his sister, who also struggled with his reading. He is still reading through easy readers as well but i give him a couple more challenging books for him like the little bear books or frog and friends and i feel like just having him read every day to practice his reading more is helping. I’d share something that’s going well for us is our morning with the hymns, bible, poetry and recitations. I love that it’s become a routine for us as a family. Something that i haven’t gotten to is composer study and nature study. Just haven’t been able to get all four kids out with a 1 and 2 year old in the mix. I hope to do it more when spring comes around and warms up around here.
Thanks for sharing about your 2nd grader’s reading and what you’ve been doing! We are at Frog and Toad status too. And great job having a routine for the riches! That’s a huge win.
This really helped me 😊 Make a rubber band bracelet
it didn,t work it looked like this <><><><><>
Did you do a follow up video for this?
I don’t, but I think I talk about it in some of my AO update videos. We couldn’t do both well, because I couldn’t seem to fit in extra chapter books into their schedule or mine. AO was too full as is for us so we trimmed books from each child’s schedule. This year I ended up combining literature reads for my oldest 2 from AO, and in place of the darts and arrows we’re doing fix it grammar plus all about spelling for 4th and 5th grade. Hope that helps!
Super thanks for teaching by my 8 year old
Thank you so much! You made it so easy for me. Just finished making the timeline for my Y2. Will make another one for my Y1 another day. I did use card stock and will probably add another one next time to stretch the years from 2000 to 2100 since there are so many birthdays.
Awesome! We’re on our 2nd year adding to ours and I love it so much. Not sure I’m going to want the kids to stop this to use a book of centuries because I love how it’s developing! We are going to be making a 3rd one for my now 2nd grader. He’s been asking to have his own and I dropped the ball making his!
You mentioned looking up hymns online. I highly recommend the UA-cam channel by fellow "AmblesideOnliners" called "folksandhymns". She does the folk song and hymn for each month. They're always great.
If you keep using MM, Ive heard a lot of complaints with being pretty in depth in higher levels. One website I have looked at that may help with certain MM topics is MasterMath. It’s free teaching videos, worksheets, and answer sheets. MasterMath covers grades 6- Alg 1 math.
❤❤❤ uI ❤❤❤❤ ❤ have a question
You do it step by step to understand
This was extremely helpful. While we have been doing Charlotte Mason since the beginning, we have only ever done oral narration. My children are older, but I'v been wanting to start written narration with my older two. One excels at writing, while the other struggles with writing and spelling. Thanks for the encouragement to take it slow.
Glad this helped. I now have two kids doing this (year 4 & 5). The older usually does very short written narrations (he is a long winded oral narrator but doesn’t like writing as much), while the younger does longer written narrations and generally writes faster. I don’t mention it or emphasize it, or correct spelling. They’re both improving, and I’m happy to see progress a year later. I’m ready to get them both doing 2/week, but not in a rush. I would like to see more creative writing happening though and not just written narrations …How do y’all incorporate writing for fun in a Charlotte Mason homeschool?
Do you have a link to the Facebook group? I cannot find it.
Remind me which one you’re looking for, can’t remember which one I mentioned in here. If it’s the Ambleside Online FB group, I think they pause the group for the holidays and I wonder if the group if findable during that time?
Helpful video - thank you!
Thank you for this!
