The Dream Suite archival project is now public. There are two database rips featuring towns that were uploaded at least one year before the game's online shutdown in April 2024. Pretendo's archive can be found through the link in the description.
I definitely spent far too long looking for it haha. If the description could just be updated when it's available that would be amazing, thank you! Love your work!
I'm surprised this feature's servers haven't been reverse-engineered and emulated yet, that's been happening to a lot of games lately, and that's just one feature of a game which should in theory be simpler.
I actually lost my 2,000 hour town just before the Welcome Amiibo update because of this exact scenario 😭😭One of the hacked dream towns I visited had a Shampoodle in the middle of town, which plopped me on their Main Street upon exiting. So I decided to check out their Happy Home Academy because young me thought that it would show their StreetPass houses, and unfortunately, that's one of the ways to save your game on Main Street. I saw it showed my own StreetPass homes instead of theirs, so I left the game and re-opened it, and lo and behold, "Your save data is corrupted and will be deleted." Young me was EXTREMELY devastated and cried for hours. When it updated a few months later to Welcome Amiibo, it wasn't corrupted anymore, but it had been overridden with the hacked town, so I just deleted it and accepted defeat. Amazing to see a video on this topic. For a long time I thought I was the only one who fell victim to this, lol
Geez, going to sleep in a dream completely erases your past life, achievements, friends, everything. The kinda creepypasta that would make Aika Village blush. (I hope that village got saved)
So THATS why people on Miiverse told me to LEAVE IMMEDIATELY whenever I went to a hacked town I thought I would just get banned or something. Now I know why 💀
I did a lot of research into New Leaf's inner workings. The reason why dreams prevent you from saving is because dreams are represented by a game type id of 0x03. 0x02 is on club tortimer, 0x01 is online in a friend's town, and 0 is offline. After the update, in my plugin, to allow us to save an entire dream (because the ram dump method was not reliable and would always miss data such as furniture etc), we would set the gametype to offline and then it would allow us to save like normal. But Hunter R, New Leaf had another pretty severe exploit that I kept quiet about for years. In New Leaf, sold out signs were for indoor use only. No outdoor models existed, so attempting to drop the item would crash your game and anyone around you. However if you set the drop animation to something completely invalid, the game would still drop the item, it would register as a drop, but it would be invisible until after the host saves. If the host saves, that will render that entire area of their town as broken and there was no way to fix it. If a sold out sign was dropped in every acre, the game would crash just before the title screen loaded up. This is very similar to wild world but was made more alarming the fact that nobody heard an item dropping. And even more alarming, another exploit which allows someone to brick people's games at the titlescreen also exists in Animal Crossing New Horizons, as well as Animal Crossing City Folk. City Folks method is the same exact method as New Leafs bricking method. Kinda glad that was one thing I kept private during New Leafs heyday.
What do the other modes besides 'dream' do btw? When I changed them they didn't do anything What actually changes the behaviour of trees not dropping hives, Reece not welcoming into the Retail etc
@@ross3695_basedhax Yes, New Leaf had an exploit in the bulletin board packet send functions which allows for RCE. It wasn't really made use of, because the bug was discovered sometime in mid 2023. As for what each mode does, I haven't played new leaf much since 2019 so I really wouldn't be able to tell you all the differences.
i assume the sold out sign issue can be achieved by traveling to someone else's town with the glitched item in your inventory, & then dropping it to brick their game?
@@RichConnerGMNExcept said "credibility" was demolished shortly after. Same story with Vinny. As soon as the lawyers came out for both, the claimers all quickly fled.
A really bizarre experience I had while playing New Leaf was when a hacker on an island forced everyone to go back to their own town, but our towns were all still part of this online island mode, meaning that it functioned similarly to what it was like on the islands. I believe it took everyone to their own specific towns, however, we were able to see each other still just like a parallel dimension. I thought it was the craziest thing ever. I don’t believe the hacker was able to see our individual towns.
I remember this from some Italian livestreams back in 2018 or 2019. I did actually meet the same hackers several times, but they never warped us. Instead, I couldn't stop laughing at them spawning trees of trees out of nowhere and eating literally any item, including rocks.
This happened to me and it erased my entire inventory probably because it saved and Kapp'n never gave me my stuff back. I lost a bunch of stuff I've had for forever
Oh yeah! I experienced this a few times too! It was pretty weird. I also experienced hackers on the island being able to use my custom designs or look exactly like me??
Oh... my... goodness. You just reminded me of the emotional damage I endured when this whole hacked-dream-town-corrupting-your-save-file bonanza happened to me. It was summer of 2015. I was enjoying playing online in New Leaf, visiting the island and talking with people from around the world. One day, this person, who I'd met multiple times somehow by sheer chance, told me about this town called Pokeland, and NOT to go there. She didn't go into detail about it, just told me not to go there. And me, being 14 and full of teenage curiosity, decided I'd go there after the session. "What's the worst that can happen?" I told myself. Oh, you sweet summer child. So later on, I head to the Dream Suite, punch in "Pokeland" and I get back, well, multiple entries, but I picked the one at the top. I think it showed the ones that are visited the most but don't quote me. And so it took me to Pokeland, which at the time I didn't realize, was a hacked town. As you'd expect, placement of buildings was invalid, and the whole place felt weird. I entered a building, not sure which one, but it must've been retail given that, as the video explained, when I left, the game did that weird void out to Main Street warp. At that point I was getting uneasy. I wanted to leave. I turned around to try exit Main Street but just went past the edge of the map and could see the void beneath. Probably because you're not supposed to be there in the first place so the devs didn't bother adding the loading zone. So, after several minutes of wondering around the street, I decide to enter the Dream Suite. "Maybe I can warp back home from there." I talk to the lady, she sits me down in bed, the game saves (F), and when the screen went white to transition... I immediately got kicked into the home menu and the system said something like "An unexpected error occurred forcing the game to close." "Well that was a weird experience." I said to myself. I open the game back up to see if everything's okay, and first thing I saw was that the title screen was showing a villager and town that was not mine. "Uh oh." Next the game tells me, in a red speech bubble I'd never seen before, that my save file has been corrupted. I was like "But you can restore it, right?" Nope! Had to start a new file. At that moment my heart sank. I goofed up, hard. I should've listened to that person. I only had the game for about 6 months, but I was so attached to my town and put in so many hours already, and now it was gone, never to be seen again. I went on to Miiverse to voice my situation, and someone replied to me saying that the town I visited was hacked, and what happened to me is the reason why Main Street/saving was disabled in dreams. Welp, I sure learned that the hard way. I've lost many more save files in other games, but few come close to the feeling of loss I felt when I lost my first New Leaf save. Heck malicious hackers, man. Although it was not the best memory to revisit, thank you, Hunter, for explaining what exactly happens when something like this happens. If only I had this knowledge 9 years ago.
For a while I was wondering why going to hacked towns was 'dangerous' and risky when I put them on Miiverse.I thought I would just get banned or something Now I know why 💀
@@ross3695_basedhax The funny part is that instead of going into the Dream Suite, I could've just turned off the wireless communication and that would've probably saved me. But alas, the idea did not come to mind at the time.
As a big fan of New Leaf, and someone who never had internet access before 2016, thank GOD I never accidentally came across one of these towns. And what a great start to these New Leaf videos! So hyped to see more
I remember when I thought putting flowers on the beach was only possible with hacking so I used to leave SO fast One time I left and it said 'an unknown error has occured save your progress and turn off soon as possible' something similar which usually happened from a browser exploit to move villager houses I was able to put flowers on my own beach and for a long time I thought I gained the ability from a hacked town I didn't realise it was a real part of the game haha
So about a year ago my roommate was just playing New Horizons. (I know not much of this game, so my knowledge here's gonna be vague). He had been using his upstairs in a very utilitarian manner, before deciding this day to start on the path of properly decorating the room. So, he sets down a 1x2 table to start, then heads down stairs to do some crafting. When he returns, there was a television placed on the table, but perpendicularly to its direction, leaving 1/2 of it hanging off of the table. This television had no collision to speak of, but he was still able to interact with it as if it were a normal item. He ended up putting it in his bag, and it functioned like a normal item thereafter. He was initially befuddled with what may have caused this. Was his island haunted? Turns out not: after some thinking he rembered that, nearer to release, there was a certain duplication glitch which relied on strange behavior with how furniture reacted with tables. He had used this at the time to quickly duplicate televisions to quickly get more bells. However, in doing so he ended up leaving a phantom television in the room, invisible and collisionless due to a lack of a table to stand on. Even after the duplication bug was patch, it still stayed for all that time afterwards. What proceeded next was a hunt for any more ghost televisions, in which he placed town every table he had, left the room, then moved the tables to another part of the room. In doing so, we found two more phantom televisions. Once again, I don't know much at all about Animal Crossing, and so I think you may be able to get more out of this story than I possibly could. Regardless, it's still one of my favourite shared-memories with him.
this makes me nostalgic for my own file… i’ve had my town for almost 8 or 9 years, and i feel lucky that i never ran into this when i was younger. the dream restoration project also sounds super interesting! people within the community coming together to archive towns is such a kind thing to do!
It's so cool there's people creating networks like Pretendo to keep older games and systems connected and fully functional, I understand why Nintendo has to move on from older products but it's always a shame when perfectly good hardware gets shoved in a drawer because the software became obsolete
It's not as "hard" as they make it to be, Nintendo is famously incredibly shit when it comes to their old products. It doesn't cost much to keep online enabled for older consoles, it's all baked into their current online structures. They do it intentionally because they want you buying new things. They would brick your 3DS in a heartbeat if it meant you went out and bought a switch. Nintendo is basically the worst in the business for this kind of thing. It's with malice.
Sane design: - download dream data as a separate save file - entirely disable save function during dreams - don't touch the original file at all until next session - at startup, delete dream file without looking at it (in case looking somehow crashes) - periodically scan uploaded files for anomalies and delete them Nintendo design - replace your actual save data - just pray nobody manages to save during dreams - blindly trust all uploaded files, because they're encrypted, even though the encryption is worthless when hackers can just modify the live data, which the game will then encrypt for them - don't bother to patch for years because it requires hacking to exploit, even though it doesn't require hacking to be a victim Classic.
It doesn't replace your save data based on what I got from this video, it "just" overwrites your original town in game memory. Your save data is only touched if you end up saving while in the dream town, which under normal conditions wouldn't be possible. It's still uh, optimistic thinking on Nintendo's part I agree, but they weren't _that_ stupid.
@@LonelySpaceDetective I wonder if an "easy" way to prevent save overwrites on autosave would have been to compare certain current (normally unchangeable) town info in memory with the town info in the save, and if they don't match, either preventing the save from taking place or overwriting the current memory with the data in the save before allowing the save to take place. Then your save could only ever be overwritten with another save of your own town.
@@citrusella-nomorecraptions I think a potential issue with that would be false positives; just about any small change to your town from the amount of weeds to placing a new flower would be enough to make your town technically different than it was when you loaded your town up. You did give me an idea however: You know how they use a special flag in the save file to determine whether Resetti should appear? Maybe they could've made it so dreaming sets a "player is dreaming" flag, and if you try to do anything that'd trigger an autosave while that flag is set the game in some way refuses to overwrite the game data, with the flag being cleared only if you exit the dream or reload your save after turning off the 3DS.
@@LonelySpaceDetective there literally is a var that controls whether a player is dreaming, in club tortimer, in a friends town, or playing offline. for whatever reason, dreaming only disables /manual saves/ and they never thought to make autosave methods check to see what game type you're in before trying to save lmao
Nintendo have such ass-backwards ideas about how things should be done. They're portrayed as masters of their craft, but taking one tiny peek behind the curtain shows that a lot of their programming is borderline amateurish and self-destructively ignorant at times. For fuck's sake, they're still tying game logic to the framerate when *every* other developer has moved on from that. All first-party Switch games will be forever limited to 60 or even 30fps, and will require future developers to have to actually go back and modify the games to run above that. Unbelievable.
Wild World had a glitch called seeding where a hacker could literally brick your cartridge by putting lots of buildings to crash the game on the title screen(so you can't even delete it) Animal Crossing Wii(and other games) had exploits too that destroyed your entire Wii with RCE they could overrite boot1 to stop it from even getting to the main PowerPC processor
Everyone on the Animal Crossing forums was so paranoid about seeders back in the day. "Hackers" were viewed with intense suspicion. I distinctly remember my sister resetting her game during an online multiplayer session because someone kept hiding and acting suspiciously. Apparently, they were trying to brick her town. Of course, lots of "hackers" were cool. If you're lucky, one of them might even give you some of the "HDLC" (hacked DLC) items that were floating around in City Folk. I remember getting a lightsaber and a guitar axe, both of which functioned as golden axes. IIRC these items would even show up in Nook's shop once they came into your possession. Good times.
Hunter, PLEASE never stop posting Animal Crossing content. It's my 3rd favourite game series, and there's no one else on UA-cam that's so knowledgeable about AC than you. You've told me so much about a game that I thought I knew so much about!!
I remember, there was an internet list of creepy and weird towns to visit. There was one that had a lot of dolls with axes. Entering one of these felt like entering the dark web.
Yeah. it's the Aika town. I remember RiverRun too ! its for me the OG creepy hacked town back when ACNL was released. There wasn't a save editor in this era, so there wasn't really common 👍
I'd love to see some love for City Folk - so many people forget about it, and laugh at the mic (it let me talk to my friend 2500 miles away! Long-distance calls were expensive!)
Animal Crossing New Leaf: corrupt your town Animal Crossing Wild World: Brick your entire cartridge Animal Crossing City Folk and New Horizons: Brick your entire console with RCE corrupting boot process EDIT: The RCE exploit was first discovered in Mario Kart Wii but was also found in LOTS of other games even on Nintendo Switch and 3DS, We can thank Wiimmfi team and PabloMK7 for sending it to nintendo to get fixed xD I'm not sure if New Leaf had it but I know some other 3DS games did
@@jummy0 IIRC it *may* be the same sort of thing I've heard about in Mario Kart Wii (a number of Wii games apparently used similar code libraries for some things and it's a vulnerability in the whole library)--a malicious actor could run cheats/code that could crash or brick their own Wii in an offline scenario, but running it online might cause anyone else also playing to be subject to the same brick.
This is actually really interesting, I'm surprised Nintendo didn't save your town in a different way to prevent something like this. Great video as always Hunter!
3:49 OMG i literally recovered my original ACNL town of like 6 years after i lost the cart by doing this with a mod. had a friend give me my dream address and was able to get it to save, and was surprised at how just complete it was. pocket, main street, mail, villager memories... it truly shocked me just how much data was uploaded with the dream town. it was sort of a hail mary and this is the first time i've ever seen someone else talk about how this is possible
I definetly understand how devastating this glitch could be, but it brings up an interesting concept of replacing your town with that of another player’s and being able to freely make changes to it while still having a starting point. It sounds like something they should try out in future games
i remember buying a new cartridge (so i could keep my original town) as a kid to pick out a hacked town like this and was so happy bc i had unlimited money and stuff like flowers in the water and it was so pretty !
YES FINNALY NEW LEAF. New leaf has been my childhood, ive been enjoying your videos a ton and have just been waiting for you to break open this rabbit hole. New leaf is so broken, and has so many fun stories and glitches to tell, i hope this series gets updated further. Love your Content, keep it going
Bit bummed the list of dream towns isn't available yet, but holy hell. I thought i'd coped with the new leaf servers shutting down. I cried several times throughout the _nine minute video._ Incredible video, 10/10. I also appreciate that you didn't post this until after the servers went down /gen
I’m just glad that you can still unlock the dream suite public works project even after the discontinuation of the 3ds online by attempting to connect to someone else’s town at the train station. :)
From a programming aspect this is really easy to prevent. In the save function simply return an error message before saving if in a dream town. This feature was probably added on rather poorly.
no, it's really not that simple at all. if it was "really easy", they wouldn't have waited until a major feature update and had to overhaul the way addresses are stored. while they definitely should've fixed it sooner, programming games is never simple.
yooo new leaf!!! probably just nostalgia induced bias but i absolutely loved new leaf, would be nice to see more content on it i actually remember finding a hacked dream town just by chance once when i was a kid, and it was hacked in such a way that you could go out of bounds, and they placed a bench out in the void... that you couldn't get back up from. needless to say, i was a bit upset lol
naww its not nostalgia bias at all, acnl is genuinely goated, the first animal crossing game i played was new horizons and i liked it but when i finally picked up new leaf holy DARN is it so much better...
@@ross3695_basedhaxBreaking News: Many people have been deemed “non gamers” because they’re saying that your preferences are likely influenced by nostalgia.
A fantastic video like always. If you ever talk about new leaf again, I hope you can explain the rare sunrises and sunsets that would occasionally happen, since there's very little info on it.
I grew up with new leaf! You have nooooo idea how absolutely elated I am to see you diving into New Leaf as well as the original gamecube version (☆▽☆)!!!
7:25 "there's a good chance your Dream Town is still there!" ...Can someone KINDLY pass a link to that vault? Because well, I uploaded a dream town ages ago and afterwards, my copy of New Leaf got stolen and I had to basically start from scratch with a new copy. So if what the video said is true, that means that...my town is preserved somewhere? And I can get it back? :O That would be magical.
It will be published eventually, but the data is still being compiled and sorted through. I’m not really involved in that process, so I can’t give a definitive timeframe, but it shouldn’t be too much longer.
You can't fool me, I can tell your character is moving with keyboard keys (IJKL?) from those suspiciously 90° and 45° paths with no 3DS joystick wiggling
a few days ago I downloaded the welcome amiibo update and my village got reverted back into a village from a previous save file I didn't even know was still on the cartridge. why is New Leaf like this
wow, i’ve always been fascinated by this glitch/exploit, and have never found more than just some forum posts about it. Ive always been really facinated with errors and corruption in animal crossing and other games, so i’m happy to see such a video that goes in depth about it :)
The worst thing I encountered in a dream town was someone putting the plaza out of bounds. I couldn't move, go on the bed nor leave so I had to quit out the game and reload. Resetti gave me a lecture but he'll never understand hacking.
It’s funny. I’m still on the island with someone else to this day. I left my 3DS on charge and never touched it. Me and this person have been chatting ever since lol
@@Most-sane-deltarune-fan No because we get on when we can chat the Internet has not crashed once and since the shut down only includes when is soon as we get off of the island we can stay in here for as long as we want
Honestly, if you have a 3ds, I'd recommend giving New Leaf a look! While it doesn't have as much raw customizability, it does have a handful of unique features and minigames (and somewhat more interesting villager interactions imho)
I haven’t been getting notifications lately, so I had no idea this video was out! I have a little binging to do. Thank you for all of these videos, Hunter. I’m looking forward to your content branching out to the rest of the series!
i remember hearing about this when i was looking up if hacked dream towns could corrupt your data. scared the hell out of me, but i wonder if people could use it to their advantage and just... copy a town they like onto their own game. assuming the game isn't corrupted or whatever.
Just wanted to say, this is the first time I've seen New Leaf with the HD textures and wow. It looks like how I imagined the original looking back then, when that resolution was the best you'd get on handheld. Would be awesome to go back to the game as it is here to relive the nostalgia without the graininess
I swear every video of yours blows my mind lol. New Leaf was my first AC game and I remember visiting hacked dream towns that had structures like public works projects in the ocean and river. Visiting those felt so forbidden, but now I'm glad I never ran into one that could overwrite my save file! I would've been so much more afraid if I had known that back then hahaha. Your videos are awesome, and you explain everything in a way that is easy to understand, even to someone who has no experience with programming, like me. I've subscribed and I'll be looking out for new videos, I can't wait to learn more whacky stuff about this game series I love so much
oh wow, i'm glad i was never super into dream visiting! would've hated for this to happen to my town... i love acnl, happy to see some videos about it! the music is sooo nostalgic
Really loving the branch out into New Leaf. There's so many odd mechanics and oversights that it can compete with Gamecube. Just the other day, I found a glitch with Cyrus and the lava lamp. His customization options for this one item are mislabeled, and every color is inaccurate once customized. I couldn't find any information on it except a dead forum post, which is odd, since it was never patched.
Oh good, another video for me to watch 5 times in one day. That's just one of the perks of being one of my comfort youtubers lol. Commenting for engagement :)
This makes me wish I knew about this glitch earlier so I could have backed up the town of one of my best friends. Unfortunately it's too late now. Edit: I'm glad to hear they're working on dumping all the dream towns, as that was one of the few things that remained from my old friend from around a decade ago. Hopefully their town was never erased, I tended to visit them every once in a while, but I went a while without playing and might have left their town unvisited for a year or more.
This video should be a rather large reminder that it doesn't matter what companies do to try and stop people from getting around stops and checksums, or how "obsolete" technology is cut off from our modern world; people will find a way around it and make it work. Invasive DRM, attacks on Right-To-Repair, Server-Shutdowns . . . all of it can be circumvented with enough perseverance.
I remember one time in Animal Crossing - New Leaf I went to an island and majority of the people you meet there are nice, including the hackers. -Either that or I was dumb lucky. I did meet some jerks on there too.- However, there was this one hack that made the player drop down a bunch of trophy items inside of Captain's/Tortimer Island's hut and it completely crashed all of us. Fortunately, my town was fine, but I've never seen anything like it before. There were other unique hacks too like swapping out any items at the Island's shop for any amount of medals needed (so long as you are there and don't refresh), soft locking players from entering in and out of the small island by placing down palm trees and bushes, as well as hackers being nice enough to drop down items for you that you needed. A bunch of wild stuff can happen in New Leaf, especially before Welcome Amiibo. It was insane.
Story time! so i first started playing new leaf around release, and i loved it, i grew up with wild world and i was in middle school when new leaf came out. then at one point while i was playing it at launch this dbag kid kept turning off my 3ds, and it corrupted my save data. i was heartbroken, even contacted nintendo to see if my town could be restored in any way using the dream suite data and they just said no, maybe in the future but that’s not in the works. i started again, idk if that data is still around because i haven’t been able to get attached in the same way since. now i see this video, learn i was lied to by nintendo cause they could have used this to get it back, and what’s worse, it’s now gone for good cause they wiped it with welcome amiibo. if any of the old data is ever recovered and someone comes across a “de witt” with bree in it, let me know, or at least say hi to her for me
I can't tell you how absolutely flabbergasted I was at the end of the other vid when you did a teaser for new leaf vids. Gives me hope for City Folk vids because City Folk is my fav ^_^
almost leapt out of my seat seeing you finally get to some other game content, damn i love your channel man! what a crazy topic too, love when bugs are just straight up Bad. ty for ur efforts entertaining us masses
funnily enough, when i was trying to get the 500 dreams badge before the server shutdown, i only saw one dream that was actually malicious in how it set up the hacked town--if you put it in the top left of the map, you'd be unable to reach the bed, softlocking you and needing a reset. it's no "deleting your town altogether", but that was still a little rude!
Of course, but New Leaf didn’t see widespread AR support until a bit after it’s launch. It takes awhile for people to crack the game and come up with the codes.
I remember when I was like 11 I saw this tutorial on yt to hack your town, It involved getting to a dream island called biscuit or something like that, I did all the steps and got my island to be that exact same island. You could walk on the rivers and all that and was full of golden roses and stuff. Im glad that it didnt corrupt my game files because as an 11 year old i would have been really scared
Huh, crazy to think my NL dream town might be on an archive somewhere. I wonder how many visited during its time online. Happy to hear you're branching out to the other AC games, learning about the original is fun but I grew up with Wild World so I'll always be curious to see exploits and oversights from anything past WW! :D
Love your work!
i was so excited cause i might’ve seen my old island again… i hope this project actually gets completed and my town is in it

Yeah, it probably would have been best not to mention something which doesn't exist for us.
Pretendo has also archived most of this data, and will eventually be putting the data online

I did a lot of research into New Leaf's inner workings.

So literally every online AC game has a brick WTF
That's insane, AC City Folk and NH even had a console brick in the network library

@@ross3695_basedhax Yes, New Leaf had an exploit in the bulletin board packet send functions which allows for RCE. It wasn't really made use of, because the bug was discovered sometime in mid 2023.

Pretendo shall save your soul
A really bizarre experience I had while playing New Leaf was when a hacker on an island forced everyone to go back to their own town, but our towns were all still part of this online island mode, meaning that it functioned similarly to what it was like on the islands. I believe it took everyone to their own specific towns, however, we were able to see each other still just like a parallel dimension. I thought it was the craziest thing ever. I don’t believe the hacker was able to see our individual towns.
Hunter, if you can explain this somehow, that would be pretty cool.
I remember this from some Italian livestreams back in 2018 or 2019. I did actually meet the same hackers several times, but they never warped us. Instead, I couldn't stop laughing at them spawning trees of trees out of nowhere and eating literally any item, including rocks.
It’s like a magic trick! Haha!
I immediately got kicked into the home menu and the system said something like "An unexpected error occurred forcing the game to close."
"Well that was a weird experience." I said to myself.
For a while I was wondering why going to hacked towns was 'dangerous' and risky when I put them on Miiverse.I thought I would just get banned or something
Now I know why 💀
aint reading that allat, im so sorry for you lost tho
@@ross3695_basedhax The funny part is that instead of going into the Dream Suite, I could've just turned off the wireless communication and that would've probably saved me. But alas, the idea did not come to mind at the time.

Another addition to "if you want someone to not do something, either don't tell them about it at all or tell them why exactly".
As a big fan of New Leaf, and someone who never had internet access before 2016, thank GOD I never accidentally came across one of these towns.
And what a great start to these New Leaf videos! So hyped to see more
Me too as I didn't progress far enough to unlock the dream suite before 2016 because as a kid I didn't know what to do while playing the game.
I remember when I thought putting flowers on the beach was only possible with hacking so I used to leave SO fast
One time I left and it said 'an unknown error has occured save your progress and turn off soon as possible' something similar which usually happened from a browser exploit to move villager houses
I was able to put flowers on my own beach and for a long time I thought I gained the ability from a hacked town I didn't realise it was a real part of the game haha
You can do it in New Horizons. I have a handful of flowers on my beaches there.

Servers now can be used inside a Docker..... buuuut managers gonna manage because time and "not worth"

Sane design:
- download dream data as a separate save file
- entirely disable save function during dreams
- don't touch the original file at all until next session
- at startup, delete dream file without looking at it (in case looking somehow crashes)
- periodically scan uploaded files for anomalies and delete them
Nintendo design
- replace your actual save data
- just pray nobody manages to save during dreams
- blindly trust all uploaded files, because they're encrypted, even though the encryption is worthless when hackers can just modify the live data, which the game will then encrypt for them
- don't bother to patch for years because it requires hacking to exploit, even though it doesn't require hacking to be a victim
Classic.
Wild World had a glitch called seeding where a hacker could literally brick your cartridge by putting lots of buildings to crash the game on the title screen(so you can't even delete it)
Animal Crossing Wii(and other games) had exploits too that destroyed your entire Wii with RCE they could overrite boot1 to stop it from even getting to the main PowerPC processor

I did meet some jerks on there too.-
However, there was this one hack that made the player drop down a bunch of trophy items inside of Captain's/Tortimer Island's hut and it completely crashed all of us. It was insane.

almost leapt out of my seat seeing you finally get to some other game content, damn i love your channel man! what a crazy topic too, love when bugs are just straight up Bad. ty for ur efforts entertaining us masses
This is such a good video! Can’t wait to see more vids about ACNL
funnily enough, when i was trying to get the 500 dreams badge before the server shutdown, i only saw one dream that was actually malicious in how it set up the hacked town--if you put it in the top left of the map, you'd be unable to reach the bed, softlocking you and needing a reset.
it's no "deleting your town altogether", but that was still a little rude!
Action replays were in use long before new leaf. Had one back in the day for wild world and pokemon platinum
Im glad that it didnt corrupt my game files because as an 11 year old i would have been really scared
was the video french ?
@@juliogaltoni no, it was spanish. But I saw the french video two weeks ago just to see how I did it
@@Ganyuluv it was very common in france and spanish, there were blogs and videos that talked about towns that were "dangerous"
@@juliogaltoni Yeah
Huh, crazy to think my NL dream town might be on an archive somewhere. I wonder how many visited during its time online.
Happy to hear you're branching out to the other AC games, learning about the original is fun but I grew up with Wild World so I'll always be curious to see exploits and oversights from anything past WW! :D
Knowing that my Town is forever saved in a historical backup is kinda wild
Well done. Hunter R.
The best part is that pretendo (3Ds and WiiU server revival) is working on ACNL as we speak and will use the dream suite dumps.
Babe wake up new Hunter R. video
Thanks for taking my advice! Ghis will differentiate you from other channels and give you more glitches to showcase earlier on!
