Yes please do a sketching of the Birds please! 😊 Also could you recommend a good water color sketch book that holds waters well but I could also do colored pencils, alcohol markers and fountain pens Etc… Thanks 😊
I love watching you sketch; it's so helpful to see how fast it can come together. I get so hung up on the details when I go to sketch. Thanks for helping me work myself out of that. I say yes post the other birds.
Strange how people do not know this, then again depends on the ink. I used to use Windsor and Newton inks which needed distilled water..lovely colours and lovely texture. Yes limited palette, is a good thing, but sometimes you need a yellow.❤❤❤ love what you did. I also use felt tip pens, they can make good art work, you don't need fancy expensive stuff. Carioca is good, all their stuff I know is for kids, but hey! It is good. Durable, iconic, and a blst from my past. I always used Carren dash pencils, I still have them, and we got them in the 70' s.Also I have my great aunt's pastels, and they are about 100 years old. I don't use them, they are a treasure, and irreplaceable.
Hi Lindsay! I would love to see a tutorial for the other birds. Also, thanks for talking about being a beginner at urban sketching and noting that it’s going to take lots of drawings to get where you want to be (I think you’re fabulous already but I get it!). Art does not come naturally to me, and I feel like my progress is much, much slower than it is for others. Some days I accept that it is what it is, but last night I was having a tough time with it and wondered if I’m just wasting my time (and oh so much money 😂). Hearing those reminders from you was just what I needed today, so thanks for that. ❤
It's getting harder to find something new in regards to art materials on UA-cam with creative ways to use these materials. I enjoyed your video and would like to see more of the birds you've created!
Yes, please post what you have with the birds. I learned this technique from Lynn Baur a couple of years ago and I really enjoy it. I like using Platinum Preppy pens for this - they have excellent nibs for an inexpensive pens, and they can be used with cartridges, which I refill, even with waterproof pigment inks. The Preppy pen has not ever dried out on me, even with pigment inks. Also Tip: this works with gel pens too- they wash out also. Good use for those who dont know what to do with those 120 sets of gel pens they got…. Just let them dry completely between layers, as Lindsay mentions.
Oh, great tip on Preppy Pens and pigment inks. Thank you! I have often wondered, as so far Pigment inks have been a nightmare to clean in pens when it dries out. Preppy pens, are always a good choice. Thanks again!
This was fun, I used water soluble pencils. I made a mess with my black fountain pen but I just kept on going and fixed it up. I am happy with it. I am learning so this is so helpful. And the fact I kept going instead of giving up really helps.
Yes to the bird tutorial. I recognized the kingfisher! That's how far I've gotten in my watercolor class! I have it drawn and the background done. Then I've gotten busy making my Christmas cards. I plan to work on my class this winter when the snow is blowing and it's too cold to be out. Loved the fountain pens. But, no more art supplies until my Christmas shopping is completed.
Yes, please post the full page of birds tutorial. Your casual and informative manner of sharing your thoughts is like being with a good friend. Your ideas are always helpful to me artistically. Thank you!
Super fun sketchy morning with you Lindsay. Love the birdy sketch and would be happy to see the other piece as well. I'm with you on the accordion style sketchbooks, but I have seen one used pretty effectively for sketching on vacation/on a trip. I ordered the pens for myself and as gifts so it will be fun to try them out.
This reminds me of the sketches I seen in John Muir Law's book... I got that for my wife, for her Birthday... She loves it so much. she's been wanting to start sketching a plein air journal. I want to start painting one. However this has NOT been our year for that... Mosquitoes, broken wrist, 100 other excuses that caused us to should all over ourselves... Next year could be our come back year!!! I'm still going to work on my painting and skating!!! The cast comes off just before Xmas... I'll start painting for therapy, with you, Lacey Walker, Cinnamon Cooney, Michellethepainter and Kristy Rice as my coaches!!!
Yes, I would love to see the bird tutorial. I am an avid fountain pen enthusiast, and really hadn’t thought about using all different colors for drawing! Thanks for the inspiration!
Lindsey, please don’t be embarrassed about having a lot of art supplies. You have a unique trifecta that is valuable to art vendors/manufacturers and consumers: a sizable database of knowledge about a variety of art/craft materials, techniques, and their manufacturers (artist); a solid understanding of how they are made and how they work (scientist); AND you know how to explain it all so that others understand it (teacher). Vendors send you supplies for review because they know you understand, know how to use, and how to explain the supplies, and will be fair in your assessment. Finally, they know you have a large following who trust your knowledge and Integrity and trust that this will result in sales for them. The art supplies you get are simply a part of the process. I know you know this, I just want you to know _we_ know this too. Vendors aren’t being altruistic; you save us money and aggravation, which results in sales for them (I already bought a few things from this year’s gift guide - _for myself.)_ I will also buy some of these pens today (I’ve been looking for a good specific type of fountain pen to buy for weeks. I’m still looking but this multicolored set will be a nice addition.)
I saw your other drawings using those pens & after watching this one too I decided to buy the large set. I’m going to gift 1/3 each to my hubby & 1/3 to my sis in law. Just ordered an inexpensive pen case for them too & will pick up a sketchbook as well….this will be such a fun Christmas gift! (Of course, I’ll get to play with them myself too before Christmas…so win win!!) 😂😂
I remember that sketchbook and the struggle you had to create and you had your bad and good pancakes discussion. I actually liked both paintings you created.
It's always so much fun to discover a watersoluble art supply, great sket hes, loved the coloured pens sketches, those really surprised me. More sketches of birds please 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
did you just invent watercolor fountain pen painting? haha because I've never seen this done this way before!! This might be your urban sketch niche....
I have these pens in my cart. Thank you for sharing your playtime with them. I found empty ones & lots of different inks for them. I'm learning which inks are safe for refilling fountain pens. Some waterproof inks clog your pens. These pens are definitely an adorable option to using inks for paintings. The ink sets are quite costly. Even just 5 or 6 bottle sets. These are a great way to get started before leaping into the more expensive ink sets like PH Martins, Daler Rowney FW, etc.
Sketched along with the fountain pens I have that were just next to me. Something fun I did recently was mix my red and teal fountain pen inks I already have to make a purple! Using what I already have in new fun ways. 😊

The platinum preppy fountain pens come in several colors and have refill cartridges in many colors including yellow and brown. Not sure about water solubility.
This set looks like an awesome travel option for my WN Calligraphy and drawing inks. And like you said, after the ink runs out, I could see about just filling them with the WN ink!!! If they should clog up, I'll just turn them into travel dip pens, since they have caps! My current dip pens are so inconvenient for travel!
Would love to see the other birds. Did you get different line widths with these? I love using my fountain pen with a water brush, it just has plain old Parker Quink in it and I love how it washes out. Sometimes another colour would be useful though, so I might see how much they are here

🦜🦚🐤🦆🕊️🐧🐦🦉🐦⬛ Yes to the birds video! Thanks for bringing fountain pens into the mix. I have been a 🖋️ user for decades but haven't really thought of them for sketching like that. I use waterproof ink for ink & wash urban sketches, though (have some ink recommendations if you want 😊) But this, my dear, opens up a whole new game. I have more ink bottles than I can use in a lifetime so I will probably use good cheap 🖋️ with the inks I have (Platinum Preppy or Jinhao Shark pens check them out). BTW, ⛔ do not use liquid watercolours in good pens, as they might dry inside and congest the pen. Test them that on a Preppy / 🦈 Jinhao Shark before potentially ruining a good quality pen.
