  • I have a theory that the more you bring with you to an art retreat the less you will get done because you will have more choices and therefore, more decisions to make. Here are the supplies I brought with me to the Focus Retreat Center for the Inktober Retreat and I will tell you what I used and didn't.
    What I brought:
huge pack of Art Beek brush markers (cheap and plentiful so I can share) amzn.to/47jEPyS
Sketchbar marker sketchbook 7"x7" or so (no longer available)
Ohuhu fineliners (black and color-waterproof and alcohol marker proof) amzn.to/3SwTkvn
In my Grumbacher backpack with stool built in. Sadly this backpack is no longer made but this is similar: amzn.to/3QKeWmD
    Viviva folio A5 set: vivivacolors.com/?sca_ref=249...
Derwent Chromaflow pencils, 24 set: amzn.to/3FJbYZ7
Portable painter filled with watercolors: amzn.to/3QJ9tMM
    Hahnemuhle accordion sketchbook: amzn.to/3u94EmU
    Bug spray
    Sunscreen (hahahaha!)
Stillman & Birn Beta series mixed media sketchbooks in 3.5"x5.5" and 5.5"x8.5" (finished both!) shrsl.com/4aic7
4"x4" handmade arches paper sketchbook (finished that too!)
    Cheap joes travel brushes: www.cheapjoes.com/miller-s-ps...
    Flat compass: amzn.to/3siD0U2
    White gel pen: amzn.to/49npUpu
    White paint pen: amzn.to/3MQRqlF
Basic watercolor extras like wax, credit card scraper, old toothbrush, rag, clips, tape, eraser, pencil, a few other brushes and stuff like that.
    In my fanny pack:
This fanny pack is waterproof and looks to be a similar size: amzn.to/3tXIBjc
Tiny clip-on palette with my watercolors: amzn.to/3sgoeNL *this looks better than the one I bought and is cheaper LOL!
Derwent set of 4 waterbrushes: amzn.to/3Mug0Z0
Compressed towels (actually, these are in all my kits and I rinse them out after using them, let them dry and keep using them. amzn.to/3QIIZLb *I had these in my camping stuff, I did not buy them for art but they are super absorbant and last longer than paper towels.
    3.5"x8.25" handbook sketchbook: amzn.to/3u0g64n
Other: clips, tape, pencil, eraser, cut up credit card etc.
I used most everything, yay! I didn't use the bug spray, sunscreen or accordion sketchbook!

You finished 3 sketchbooks! That’s great! Not boring at all. Exciting!💕 Art is a great obsession!💕 The little wood watercolor palette would be great gift with a sketchbook 💕 I loved seeing what you pack and use for vacation/retreat. I stuffed my backpack with my art supplies for a flight to SF couple years ago. Only used my small set of watercolor. Carry on. So heavy 😅. Transfer was murder. I don’t know what I was thinking 😅 Glad you had fun💕

Brilliant video, I love seeing what others take on vacation! So cute how you packed the tinyest watercolour palettes but then brought the massive bag of alcohol markers 😁 I always want to bring everything, as I do miss my art supplies when I’m away, but recently I went more minimal - but it’s still too much 😂

I really enjoyed seeing what you have in your travel bag. It made me feel so much better about mine. I always take to much, but then I have to pack for each trip. So, after two or three days of getting ready I have changed my mind at least two or three times about what kind of project I want to work on, and, then I wind up taking all of it. I need to find a cabin with WiFi so I can just immerse myself in one of your classes.

Great idea to cut your brushes 31:41 in half. If you want them to have a tip to scratch, cut them diagonally -and use your husband's sanding machine to make it smoother and pointier. I did this (although Insanded by hand😊!) and then painted the tip with gold coloured acrylic paint. It looks so good!

You would think this is not interesting to watch but watching what artists use or take to places shows exactly what artists value. Obviously, if it were up to us, we would take the whole studio. But when forced to slim down in supplies, it shows the true process of how an artist works.
You are someone I admire as an artist and teacher, so this is very helpful. It's almost like peering inside your mind and not just watching the pretty art come alive.

Speaking of New York...an hour or 2 north of nyc there's an art park called "Storm King Art Center" in New Windsor, NY where there are acres and acres of fantastic modern art sculptures that you can walk through or ride on their guided tram tour and see. They have a few Alexander Calder s there. Even if you're not that into huge modern art sculptures (I can take them or leave them but they are great visuals) the park itself is so beautiful. It's worth a stop.

I love videos like this, always helpful for me to know how to put together a travel bag for art practice since doing so at home doesn't seem to work out to well for me. Maybe, you don't think so, but I know I'd be happy to own any kind of art made by you. If I had my own income, I'd be first in line to buy any of your sketchbooks/art that you're not fond of. Last but not least, nope I've still not been able to acquire my set of artists grade watercolor tube paints that I've been wanting to get. Ohh well. Thanks for keeping your channel going, we love you. Sincerely Becky B from Arkansas

    Lindsay,
Better to be prepared for whatever art adventure that may come your way. My husband would say, “minimize your packing. “Then again , if it’s a first time experience…. You’re just not sure what to pack. It’s the what if’s that get you in a jam. I know I seem to pack more variety art supplies when we go on vacation. Heck! Half the time we aren’t by any art store’s. Except for this year and was I in seventh heaven! I digress. I’m guilty of overpacking, too. The again when I have to carry that extraordinarily heavy backpack. Well I do think , What the heck! 😂🤣😁
By the way, I always enjoy your video’s. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
    Warm Regards,
    Martina

Bringing almost finished sketchbooks to any workship is not an efficient use of space. In addition, this is a new experience and it makes sense to start afresh. One book with good paper and one not as good so there's no pressure.

I absolutely love this video concept. Only saw the first half when writing this but I didn’t want to risk forgetting this. Paused the video to give this tip: I have those Chinese brushes too, both the white and the brown ones. After a bad wet-dog situation with my travel squirrel 12 brush (thought no way they would be real hair for the price at that time but considering the smell they at least ought to be partly real hair) I drilled that way too small whole at the end of the cap wider. And with that experience in mind, I just cut off the ends of those somewhat flexible caps of those Chinese brushes. Those caps are long enough for them to not still serve their purpose. I was able to fix my broken one but I’ll keep your solution in mind should I have a problem with one of those. Now, on to part 2 of this video, quite curious how much you did and didn’t use lol
I always bring too much 😅

A relative of mine used to have a wheeler that converted into a seat, rather than using a cain. It gave her a lot more range because she was more stable with walking and didn’t have to carry a stall. The unit could be used to transport her kit around too. Perhaps not for everyday, but for urban exploration it might be worth trying. The nature of the beast mean people often only can use these aids for a short period of time, so depending where you live there may be a second hand market in them. It’s worth checking out. I seem to recall a lot of discussions about units with and without hand breaks, and with three versus four wheels.

@@dees3179 this sounds very interesting. I'm not familiar with the term wheeler. Is it like a walker with a seat?

@@ArtsiRosi I guess so. I don't know the term walker! It has two handles, some have breaks on them. They can have all sorts of different carriers incorporated in to them. They have all wheels, it's not like crutches. Some are three wheel and some four. When you want to stop there is a comfy seat that you can make appear. Put the brakes on and it's really stable, not like balancing on a stool.

I use a hear gun on watercolor sometimes. It's handy. It can blister acrylics and it might ignite oils so it depends on what you are using.

I watch on double time and still understand Lindsay because her diction is excellent. I agree with the previous poster, check the speed settings on your video, it must be on something you are not used to.
