As a French person who didn't know the lyrics of this aria, I can say it's really easy to follow what she's saying even though she's not a native speaker and sings at the same time. Really impressive.
@@theresejohansen1675 Diana is the best soprano of its time! She will be remembered for her perfect queen of the night but every piece she sings is magnificent! She is one of the few to have mastered the art of singing to such a level! That's sad she is less active nowadays though...
I don't even speak French as a native language, and I understood more than half of what she was singing. Considering on a good day I get at only ~10% of French opera without subtitles, that's impressive.
Not only is she a brilliant singer, but a fantastic actress as well! She actually pays attention to the libretto and truly performs. I've never been a fan of this aria, but Diana can make anything sound good!
She sings EVERYTHING with insight and honesty. Even music I don't love, like this silly aria, comes off as a moment spent in the heart of a heroine. She is the best. The BEST!
When I was a silly young soprano - meaning, I over- intellectualized everything and did not actually SING - I, like some of the others commenting here, thought this was a 'silly aria.' OK fast.forward four or five decades, and I have just been looking again at the music I learned in my youth. Now, this doesn't seem silly at all. It ain't Shakespeare, any more than John Cranko's ballet ROMEO AND JULIET is Shakespeare. But listen to the words! This is a damn fine little poem, a young girl's delight in her own youth and her awareness that it will end all too quickly with an arranged marriage. The music is fresh and delightful, very much of its period. It's an infectious entrance aria, beautifully presents the character of the young girl..And Damrau gives us all of this - with style and grace!
Ah!
Diana is a pleasure to watch - a great actress as well as a phenomenal coloratura. Right before this video, I saw her sing "Exsultate Jubilate" - magnificent. And you must see her performance of the Queen of the Night aria (#2) from The Magic Flute. Her voice is just that always….magic.
Kudos to the little girl for attempting this at a young age but at the same time, it made me wonder whether they gave her the buzzer because she was young and sung something which they were just fascinated by and not with regards to how she sung it
The adults that let kids do things like this and then send them out to a talent show should be ashamed for themselves. Not just because children have no business singing repertoire like this but I hate seeing those kids being taken advantage of for money and notoriety. Talk about living vicariously through your children.
Damn I love opera so much. Especially female voices. When they reach high pitches, I feel goosebumps all over my body. Such powerful talent enough to touch the soul.
I’ve listened to so many people singing this aria now and this is still my favorite! She seems so genuine and free and it’s wonderful to listen to and watch!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

She's very good! She looks brilliant and quite convincing, but I have never seen anyone singing this piece as Leontina Vaduva. She's my favorite Juliette. What a voice! But Diana Damrau remindes me Vaduva here, and I like them too. Very expressive!
Diana has breathed life into this "chestnut"!! She is so gifted in both voice and acting ability.. It's always a pleasure to watch and listen; when so many times I will close my eyes and listen to singers in either concert or opera. Keep up the good work and thanks for posting this vid!
I've really been studying sopranos lately and, for all the fuss over Callas, I have to ay that I just don;t care for her voice, the quality of the voice itself. It is not an insult to her performance, her interpretation, her agility, or anything like that. But it is just too thin and brittle for my tastes. But maybe I just love big, fat, rich sounds, like this one! Although I do really adore Natalie Dessay, I just can't get over the fact that, for my tastes, Damrau is really tops. There is just something about the way she inhabits each character, the joy you can see and feel in her performances, or the anguish of the character in tragic circumstances. We all have our own tastes, but for me, I still prefer Damrau's performances. And no matter what anyone says, I love her acting! She is so committed to her roles. Fantastique!
Maria Callas has what I would call an "ugly" timbre. She had a very heavy voice and dark voice color. I understand people who don't really like her, I get it. But her voice was far from thin. It is richer, bigger, and fuller than most opera sopranos, and yes I am including all voice fach.
This is absolutely fantastic!! Brava Diana! A poof, that this aria doesn't need an "acrobatic" show-off (unfortunately very common among young singers nowadays) in order to be great.
Magnifique. Diana Damrau, soy s Tu admiradora quisiera tener el 10% de tu potente voz y manejo de diafragma, dominio escénico y respiracion. Tu vocalizacion es perfecta y tus ataques me dejan en un wow!

She's 38 I believe and still playing Gretel, who's 7 or something :P Lucia di Lammermoor I would think is more difficult than Juliette, but I know next to nothing about the technical aspects of opera.
One of the few singer alive who can bring beauty and style to the same old aria. I wish for more singers like her. If we had good sets and artistic directors in the Opera houses ill be in heave.
The dress definitely has a "Disney princess" thing going, yes. I think she looks sweet and beautiful. She does sound a tad breathy here at times, but still a lovely performance and she's as solid as ever at portraying the character and the emotion behind the aria. And she doesn't look fat, just solidly robust. That's her natural build. My husband thinks she's HOT, lol. He suddenly wants to take me to one of her concerts, ha ha. But she's pregnant now and canceled her latest engagements.

Oh she doesn't sing French like a cow but her pronunciation isn't great. She rolls her 'r" like italian which you don't in French when singing or speaking.

Regarding spewing ignorance: I have already published 678 titles regarding classical vocal music, I wonder what are your achievements regarding music besides getting frozen waiting in line to get tickets. Diana's carreer speaks for itself.
@kdallassoprano : Well, if that is so, Domingo, Carreras and Pavarotti were never true opera singers - coz' they couldn't manage without micorphones at the soccer worldcup final's ope air event in LA 1994 or Paris 1998... Even an true opera singer's voice isn't strong enough for an open air perfomance and to fill a stadium without being damaged... Their voices are made and evaluated for opera houses...
This aria really is such a major test. Everyone sings it, maybe because it doesn't go too high or too low. But there's not a moment for a singer to catch their breath or really set themselves once a mistake has happened. I never thought I'd say this but after listening to all these renditions...Battle's is the best. I know, wierd right? Damrau is OK, but she loses her breath int he final series of roulades and she is gasping through a lot of it. Bravo but not her best.
I don't know, Masters, some of those disney princess costumes show quite a bit of cleavage, especially the more recent ones. Check out Ariel's top from the "Little Mermaid" and Jasmine's outfit from "Aladdin". Re: Damrau singing with joy. Damrau is so good at projecting joy when she sings. Except when she's singing something that conveys joy or anger. She was downright scary as the Queen of the Night.

I just don't understand the excitement over this singer. She never sounds good to me. As I write this I'm listening to the live Saturday matinee broadcast from the Met of La Fille du Regiment and she sounds HORRIBLE. She's been out of breath the whole time and is really struggling. And her acting is so over the top that it's distracting (I know this is a comic opera, but...). I fear that she's just another product of opera's hype machine who really isn't that good.
I disagree. I love Anna Netrebko's brilliance and shimmering quality but she has no business doing coloratura. I do get what you mean but that is the nature of Damrau's voice. She has a lot of bite and pop behind her voice which at times can sound harsh but I adore Damrau's interpretations and subtlety
Opera singers normally don't use mikes because concert halls and opera houses are accoustically designed to naturally amplify the sound by resonance. Since she's singing into an open space here there's nothing for her voice to reflect off and nobody would have heard anything if it weren't electrically amplified.
Well, I think I´m one the biggest Damrau Fans ever.. I love everything she does, and she´s like the best of the best.... but, sorry, this dress makes her look fat. ;( But I love the Aria... ;) I saw her in her earyl years as Juliette in Würzburg, and well, she was, is, and will ever be the best of all sopranos.
