My mother had a voice like that. She sang under Stokowski, Abravanel, Bernstein. Some Mozart, but mostly Wagner and Verdi. We lived in a house with no AC and she would sing me to sleep as a child. My favorite? Der Freischutz - 'Leise, leise, fromme Weise'. With the windows wide open in the hot summer. The neighbors never complained.....

Fun fact: the tuning system used today is higher than what they used when this was written.... I wonder how Mozart would feel if he heard this.... I think she’s freaking amazing.
This IS a recording on historical instruments played with the historical pitch (430Hz)... so I think Mozart would not be surprised by the pitch, he would be fond of Diana's voice for sure and most probably flattered by hearing this piece played and sung more than 230 years after his death.

That staccato is one of the most technically challenging things in the soprano repertoire and Diana Damrau just cuts through it like butter, like she's sung it a thousand times and could sing it a thousand more. It's magical.

And the one in the royal opera house was without a microphone. There were mics in the room for the recording but not to amplify her performance. That was all her voice in a room on that stage. Such power. Especially on the lower register like the final note it’s so hard to project those and she does it masterfully.
Her 2017 rendition in that video is one of my all time favorites though. Makes me teary eyed every time.
When she nails the pitches in staccato, without the obfuscation of vibrato, you know Damrau has what it takes.
That cheeky smile and stretch to relax her throat at the end is perfect.

Mozart always wrote FOR his singers.If they failed, he failed. His job was as secure as his aristocrat (at times clergy) employer's whim would allow.
The first singer to perform the aria onstage was Mozart's sister-in-law Josepha Hofer, who at the time was 32. By all accounts, Hofer had an extraordinary upper register and an agile voice and apparently Mozart, being familiar with Hofer's vocal ability, wrote the two blockbuster arias to showcase it. That's what Professor Wikipedia says.
I've just had a revelation about opera singers. Everyone knows they're great musicians whose instrument of choice is the human voice but it occurs to me they're also athletes who've developed amazing tone and control over a specific set of muscles in their bodies.
Not only this but it takes lots os studying a language you don't speak(not her case here, she's German) and knowing the meaning of each word you're singing, otherwise it's just bland.
Yes it's a lot, as a dramatic soprano, after singing notes like this for hours my abs hurt so bad. Then to take Italian, French, and German, on top of learning music theory. People seriously don't realize how hard this is. She literally has to use her breathing and diaphragm to support these notes coming out.
I lived as a lodger in a house that the landlady rented out for opera singing lessons. I was woken up several times a week in the late morning early afternoon and never once did I get upset, even though I work late nights.
Oh yeah I was 3 floors up, too.

They say, if you want to sing, you need to practice, but if you want to sing opera, you need to "train", the Bel Canto is an art that challenge the human body, but since the invention of the microphone, challenging the voice is no longer needed.

Actors will talk about their body being their 'instrument', but here we see it literally true. The physicality of this performance, the control required over one's breathing and vocalization - she really is using her whole body as an instrument to create incomparable music.

I've heard other sopranos sing this aria, and they were all good. But Diane is far and away the best. My God, not just the range and agility of her voice but the power and timbre. Bravissimo!
Finally seeing a soprano as a human being. That moment she laid her head backwards denotes how difficult this aria is...even for a experienced singer as her.... It's quite tiring. Imagine doing a thousand crunches... that's the kind of pain this aria leaves you XD

This woman is stunning. I'm getting more used to opera, and this is one of the reasons why. If you haven't yet, check out Marianne Crebassa, particularly her with Sabine Devielhe (spelling?) doing "The flower duet" from "Lakme." It's on youtube. It is pure heaven.

This is genius. All that can be said about her brilliant singing, amazing diction, superb acting…. Is not enough. Quite simply: Her genius is a fitting match for Mozart‘s.
She has so much control!! She doesn't just sing it, she lives it. She moves around as she sings and it just makes everything so much better!!!!:) and her German pronunciation is perfect too!!!

@Orlando Cruz - Mozart used to write these Aria to trip up the Prima Donna. He hated their arrogant attitudes and these were his opportunities, if they couldn't perform the Aria as it was written, to let them know they weren't as good as they thought they were. There were times, it is said, that even the mightiest Prima Donna could be reduced to tears, by Mozart, if she failed.
Honestly, one like isn't enough. It's insulting that we can watch this for free. This is SURREAL. Thank you very much for this masterpiece!

It's actually in the Bruno Maderna's opera Satyricon the most difficoult one. Mozart's requires an F6, Maderna's a Bb6. That's a waaaay higher note!

@@BeniyMrsCool Oh that's a shame! When it comes to high notes and difficult arias in general, though, the "Doll Song" from the Tales of Hoffman is a solid contestor. It's on YT as well, the final high note in Maria Aleida's performance is just staggering and blows me away every time. Rachele Gilmore's version at the MET is also amazing even though she doesn't sing the final high note (afaik Aleida is the only one who does it because it's so ridiculously high).

The aria starts at about 1:39. What I love about this is that the Nachtkoenigin is supposed to be REALLY pissed, and we are supposed to be terrified along with everyone else on stage at her anger. This cannot detract from the execution or the music though, and Ms. Damrau pulls this off very well! It's not supposed to be elegant or pretty or coy or shy - it's supposed to be gruff and mean, and she gets it. The high Fs are there, and everything else is as well. Brava!

Actually, this song was written for Mozart’s in-law who he absolutely hated, he wanted to make something impossible to perform and damage her reputation, which it did I believe.

Ms. Damrau’s performance is impeccable and second to none. My daughter has been captivated by her singing since elementary school. To fully convey the avenging nature of the Queen of the Night, being melodious and chirping like a nightingale is simply not enough.

My 16 yo son and I are huge Mozart fans. My wife not so much....however she absolutely loves this piece and can listen to it all day.
2:58 - 3:19 Holy shit. I'm not a bad singer, but I have nowhere near the control and intonation required for this. Opera really is some of the most difficult type of music you can perform, and she does it magnificently. Her phrasing and tone is incredible. Her technique impeccable. I would have had a seizure trying to attempt that. 😒

Okay, for all you "so called music critics" wanting to show off your fake knowledge and saying she's "bad"...here are the stats of her singing: REALLY SUPPORTED notes, GREAT CONTROL in notes, BEAUTIFUL NATURAL CONSISTENT VIBRATOS, you can see she is NOT struggling, or at least not straining, because you can barely if not at all see any veins popping out her neck, the way she opens her mouth to hit higher notes allowing more air to hit the whistle notes. Also, her German is quite clear, and her notes are right on with great control. She has steady great amount of breath support/control too, and actually puts the RIGHT DYNAMICS into the right places and GOSH her control for dynamics is crazy good. I'd stumble all over the place trying to replicate her dynamics.Another thing, her staccatos are also in rlly flawless control. Also, in her actual performance, she was ACTING AND SINGING while everything was essentially near perfect(there is no such thing as perfect...no one is just saying). TBH, she is definitely one of the better singers of this song and its crazy how good she is. Props to her👏👏
She's the only one I've seen act that role that uses those arpeggios as weapons against Pamina. All others just do technique so they can get it right.

Just so you know, I have met and talked to and am friends with several music critics and analyse a lot of music myself and I have never met anyone who thins this is bad
I am an operaphile, but hardly a critic. I’ll simply say that I go to hear her splendid voice whenever I can.
This woman is a true Goddess… such power, technique, beauty and emotion!
One of the greatest soprano voices of the modern day. She has the voice of an angel. Her portrayal of the Queen of the Night is one of my favorites. She not only makes the role seem easy, for which I know it isn't, but her acting and characterization gives the role life. Truly a musical genius. Heavenly voice.

This is the kind of music that just gives you full body chills. It’s absolutely incredible how talented some people are. I would love to go back in time to see this opera performed for the first time. What an incredible sight that must have been.

Doing the character while singing is part of the performance. If she did not, it would not sound the same. It's all connected.

I have watched this a thousand times and still cannot believe how incredible Diana’s voice is unbelievable and how amazing Mozart was
She can really carry a tune, Her voice is the epitome of opera, a treat to one's ears. Mozart wrote a really great piece, and she sings it the BEST.
Diana is the only singer that takes me on the ride on queen of the night's emotion.

As for me I can listen only two singers Diana and Lucia Popp, she is also great in Queen of the night.
She is one of the few singers to actually sound like she's not happy with her daughter for resisting her demand that she kill someone.
