This is a video I put together showing what is required to do a reel service on your own Shimano Tiagra fishing reel. All the Tiagra's are very similar internally and would require the same type of service. In this video we do more of a complete reel breakdown, which is what was need for this reel.

Great Video. I own Reel Quality SRQ in Florida and do reel service, repair and upgrades. I just did 7 Talicas for an offshore captain. I replaced all his bearings as they were completely cooked with new Boca Bearings. I used basic bearings but I also installed a ceramic kit for him on one reel. Very expensive upgrade but wow, what a set of bearings. I like to apply my drag grease with a small brush. I use the exact same grease. I'm also experimenting with Royal Purple grease and oil as well as Clenzoil marine grease and oil. For the most part I use shimano lube. Its a clear, yellow grease that works well. I also took a battery operated dremel and a cone shaped polishing bit and I spin all my bearings to test for sound. The higher speeds can reveal some damage that normal spinning will not reveal. I also quit using WD 40 because it leaves a residue that can break down grease. I use high pressure cans of CRC Electronics cleaner that eliminates grease and blasts the dirt out. I've also found that blue shop paper towels work the best and don't leave any lint on the product which can hold dirt. Just a few notes from my desk. Thanks for the video. Solid instruction, the internals of the Tiagras are really a thing of beauty. I can do a yearly service in less than 25 minutes. My only addition would be to use Qtips, some soaked in WD40 for cleaning out screw holes and some for applying grease in tight spots like the gear stacks. One other trick is to remove the clicker plate screws and apply a single drop of Loctite to the tip of each screw before screwing back in. Reason, when you have a well worn clicker plate, a screw can back out over time from the vibration of the clicker going off and eventually strip the screw threads. This happened to me on a TI50LRS and Shimano had to replaced the side plate because of two stripped screws. Ounce of prevention...

Another note, you made a reference to being careful not to strip out any screws when you put the spool drag cover back on. Great call!!!! Two of those talicas I repaired had stripped screws from the previous company that did the service. I got a set of Stainless machine metric screws and used the next size up. No need to tap them and they worked well and saved the guy $200 for a new spool.

Great job nick! I like to use an old toothbrush and put marine grease everywhere inside the reel to stop the salt water getting to any metal surface.

Hey man, just wanted to tell you that I just your videos probably about 2 weeks ago and I'm digging them....RESPECT. The reason, came to Oahu about a year ago stayed 2 weeks visiting a friend in Mililani, fell in love with the place. Plan on returning and want to do some fishing. I go 2-3 times a year to Florida and fish. But want to experience what the Pacific will let me have. Maybe when I come back I could hit ya up for a charter? If not you could recommend one. Aloha Nick, I’m glad to scan thru UA-cam for maintenance on spinning reels like cleaning, and when and where to add grease and oil.
Some guys says NOT to use WD-40 that it ruins the reels, but I can understand maybe certain materials, and some say that it the parts would end up rusting?
But I like how you explain most things pretty clearly.
I have a Shimano Nasci 4000 XG and a Penn Fierce ll 6000 and I have them for about three months now, and I’ve been using them every weekend since purchasing them and I’ve never done a somewhat good cleaning since, I’ve usually just spray them lightly with fresh water like the shops tell me and wipe them down, and send it in for service with them when I’m ready.
But I’m a hands on kinda guy especially when it comes to maintaining and mechanical item especially dealing with salt water, speaking of salt water my Shimano reel and I got drenched by a waist high wave and some ocean water got on my reel so I immediately rinsed it with fresh water.
So my question would be is what should I avoid and or never use WD-40 on? And also when and where to put and Not to put grease and oil.

I don't use the WD-40 as lubricant. I use it more as a solvent/ degreaser. Thats why you would have to grease or oil the reel after cleaning off all the old grease with WD-40. I really like the corrosion block reel grease and use it on the whole reel. There is something inside of the grease to help fight against electrolysis. For spinners I consider it pretty basic maintenance. Maybe 1x ever 2-3 months if you are using it weekly i take off the spool and lightly grease the shaft. If I was to get the reel fully submerged I would definitely take the whole reel apart. Hope this helps. 🤙
Reel Adventures Hawaii Nick I’ve seen lately at City Mill that WD-40 has several other products, there’s one that called WD-40 SPECIALIST Long-Term CORROSION INHIBITOR.
It says that it’s too be used on All Exposed Metal, to prevent from Rust n Corrosion from being exposed to the Elements like Air n Moisture.
Can something like that be used on the metal parts that’s not Required to have grease or oil? It states that it doesn’t dry out that there’s a thin slightly moist film that stays on, two years indoors and one year outdoors.
What’s your thoughts on it?
I would test it on a small area to see. But it doesn't sound like it would hurt.

I pretty sure it is similar inside. Just take it slow and take you time.

Thanks Nick, awesome help, got through 4 of my 80's which are 20+ years old, they are a bit different as far as the brakes go, you are supposed to just turn the plastic plate to open them but they stuck. I managed to get one open by putting the spool in a vice cause it had no line on it. Can't get the others open. I got 2 that I can't get the torx screws off, afraid they will strip, any tips? Mahalo
Unless the reel isn't working I wouldn't mess with it. Shimano screws tend to snap very easy under a little torque.
Hi, excelent tutorial. I will give it a go on my tiagras. How often do u think they need servicing if im only using them maybe 6 times a year in the salt water?
I would still recommend doing it at least 1x a year.

Howzit Nick, how u clean your reals after fishing. Can i spray like corrosion block into that little hole part of the reel?
I would put a little grease with each hole on the outside.
I followed the Amazon link and it sent me to Lucas oil not the reelfast oil in the video. Where can I buy the reel oil? I Googled it can can only.find in New Zealand I live in miami🤷♂️
Would anybody know how to fix my drag lever from not clicking(making noise) as i push it up/down to change drag?
The tip of your drag lever has a little button inside. When that button rides on the grooves of the drag plate it makes the sound. Either the button is stuck or missing. Or you have your washers in the the wrong place so its not contacting the grooves on the drag plate. Pull up a reel schematic and it will show a complete break down part by part 🤙
@@RAHfishing ahh makes sense. I've got the very old tiagra 80w so there's no holes in plate or a pin for it to make a noise....

Sorry I'm not 100% sure on the grease. I would highly suggest trying to find some type of drag grease.
Is there a reason shimano don't use sealed bearings and also why do you oil rather than grease the bearings??
I opened my Tiagra 80's and they have sealed bearings, they are 20+ years old and the bearings are still good to go.
Reel fast better than corrosion x in your experience?
Honestly both really good. It comes down to preference. In this case I would look at which one has a better applicator tip.

Do you ever wash your reels with Water? Let me rephrase that: is it good or bad to wash your reels with a water hose? Isn't the water get in the ball bearing and so forth?
Yes i rinse the salt off with the water house under light pressure. After i rinse off the salt i wash with soap and rinse again. After that i hand dry and put it back in its bags.
Do not use Salt away on your reels. It will ruin your reels.

Never use WD40 on any fishing reel.
Not used as a lubricant. But its used to help break down old grease
