To The Lawnmower Lady: I was impressed that you mentioned that the cover came off with a single JIS screw and that you used a Vessel screwdriver which is made to JIS standards as they are the company that pioneered the standard. Most people don't realize that this is not a Phillips head at all. So, thanks for letting literally thousands of people be exposed to this fact which is not commonly known. Also, many have a tough time removing the hold down screws on Honda automobile rotors. They strip out easily because most people don't know that they are built to JIS standards (now known as DIN 5260 standards which replaced JIS standards years ago). I made the switch and haven't looked back since. JIS/DIN 5260 can replace Phillips but Phillips cannot replace JIS/DIN 5260. Vessel is a top brand as is Wera. I will never buy another Phillips screwdriver again and have given most of my Phillips screwdrivers away already. Thanks for the great content.
I appreciate you watching. I wish I knew about JIS screwdrivers 15 years ago when I was stripping out all those brake reservoir screws on motorcycles. LOL Cheers!
@@TheLawnmowerLady Thanks for your thoughtful reply. Really enjoyed you going the extra step with the good, the bad, and the ugly motiff. I wish I knew about them 48 years ago when I got my first Honda motorbike. I had no idea what those dimples on the screwhead meant. I have stripped and drilled out my fair share of Honda automobile rotor screws in my day because I didn't know about JIS at the time. I happened to be looking on UA-cam in anticipation of changing out the brakes on my friend's Mazda 6 when I ran across a short video in which the man explained why people such as myself were having difficulty with the rotor screws. Believe me, I paid attention. I studied your video and learned quite a bit as my brother is thinking of buying this same lawn mower. Kudos for all of your hard work.

LOL The good the bad and the Ugly. I can see the shroud cracking. I like the nut removal on the carb. The old ratchets seized when dry. Good call. Thanks for the bowl seal hint.
I appreciate your last video on changing the belt. It's the only one on the internet worth watching!!! For the belt part I also could not locate the "correct" one, but 22431-VH7-K00 was a perfect fit and has worked flawlessly
Glad you found that Mr Brad. I searched for a while, even on the phone to attempt to determine what the actual dimensions were to substitute. There are some other numbers in the "description" 39.3 or something? Never figured out if those other numbers described any dimension or what. I appreciate you watching!
I’ve had that mower for about two years now, I have no complaints. It’s a lot lighter than my older HRR216 and it’s a lot more maneuverable. It all comes down to the maintenance you provide. Treat your mower casually and it will become a casualty! Thanks for the vid., 👍👍
Tony M , well I had an older MTD I bought used years ago. The engine was fine but the hardware was junk, so bought a new HRN216. I realize the Honda is a bagger and self-propelled, but it's big and heavy, I think too much for a smaller lawn. I cannot imagine how heavy your old one must have been.
The HRN216 GCV170 engine series replaced the HRR216 GCV160 engine series. The HRX is the next tier up with GCV200 engine. Just bought the HRN216VKA recently and very happy with it. Mowers shouldn't be stored outside exposed to the weather; if there is no garage or shed, it should at least be kept covered. Do the minimal maintenance on them with oil and filter changes, blade sharpening, and use STA-BIL in the gas, and they'll run well for many years. The Honda replaced a 15 year old Craftsman with B&S engine that still runs OK with very minimal maintenance (made by Husqvarna for Sears). Showing its age though and parts - other than the B&S engine - are mostly discontinued. Wouldn't buy a new Craftsman though (junk). IMO, the Honda HRN and HRX are among the best residential gas mowers.
First off I love Clint Eastwood!I haven't worked on one of those yet,but I do like the fact they went to studs and you don't have to take off all the baffles to change transmission.
Debating on upgrading my Honda hrr216vka to the hrx217 with Nextel mastic deck. Thanks for making this video and posting on my Reddit Honda mower page!
I really appreciate this. Thanks! I try not to be pushy in promoting my vids on Reddit, but try my best to add to the conversation in a meaningful way. Cheers!
For me in gas power mowers it's always Toro, I've been in my home just over 40 years and I'm still on my second Toro. 1st one was 26 years old and the one I have now is still in use.
You're right mr Tommy. Toro has been a premium brand over the years. They did outsource some of their lower end residential mowers to MTD a while back. Almost any mower purchased more than 10-12 years ago is a far superior machine to what is generally available on the market today. Thanks for watching!
My coworkers say the same thing. I feel bad because I recommend the new HRN over Toro TO SOON! The more and more I used this $600 over engineered machine, I noticed an uneven cut pattern after mowing, along with my coworkers plus MANY online reviews confirmed my same observations. "This lawn mower leaves several un-cut grass blades" same goes for the old HRR model, but not as noticeable. I called Honda customer support, and they recommend that I lower the deck and make shorter cutting swath. At this point I reverted back to mowing with my old HRR and put the HRN in timeout.
I honestly think they cut too many corners on this new model. There are some good things, but too many cost cutting IMO. ex: no baffles or guards for the belt travel. Thanks for watching.
I totally agree with you, I can tell you know your stuff. The new HRN is definitely more cost effective to manufacture and even with her new hiccups the HRN is still far more superior to your "Walmart Special" or any MTD rebrand product. I'm not a fan of the new single front and rear wheel axle adjustment but like you said Hondas plastic is pretty legit, and what I really dislike the most is new push rod engine design, Honda really set themselves apart with their signature "Overhead Cam" engine, I mean it had a freaking timing belt!!! I thought that was so unique for a single cylinder engine. When it's all said and done, I still like my Hondas but recently I only recommend TORO to friends and family.
@@dadsworkshopbykipplabrie7982 I’ll be interesting to see the insides of one of these newer GCV engines. No doubt, removing the timing belt mechanism accounted for a good deal of their parts reduction on this engine design. I’ve got three videos on this mower. All from the same owner, over about a six month period. The wheels are already wallowed out and wobbly on the front. The rears are not far beyond I suspect, even with that bushing in there. At least the HRR series still had bearings in the wheels.
Enjoyed the video. I thought a lot about it and decided to buy the HRN. Reason being you won't be able to get anymore of them when they are sold out. Is it a perfect mower? No. The lack of bushings in the front wheels is irritating. But even a less than perfect Honda is still one heck of a great lawn mower. I still have my 11-year-old Husqvarna with Honda motor. Just replaced wheels, dust cover, blade adapter, belt, and blade. It's running real nice. But all of the parts are showing their age. Honda really made some great products. Hoping my two Honda powered mowers will get me to the finish line of my lawn mowing career.
Hey, just got one of these cheap the other day. It had a fast drip of oil in the front and I thought it was the valve cover. So I resealed it and didn’t help took it back apart and noticed the head bolts were loose. Did you know this model only has two head bolts? Keep in mind only two head bolts, and they were both loose and this thing was running like a champ.
Sometimes after I do extensive research while shopping for a new lawn mower. I get so overwhelmed and confused. When I think I found one that I can afford and use. I'll also find informative vids like yours that change my mind lol. It's a good thing and I thank you for exposing some things that matter to me! Because the manufacture or big box stores won't show it. What I'm shopping for is a Self Propel Rear Wheel Drive, gas, 22" or 21" cut, rubber wheels preferably, strong engine for less than a 1/2 acre lot, mulcher, bagger, variable speed preferably, and NOT that personal pace thingy Toro has on their mowers. That just doesn't make any sense or look right to me. I have an old Craftsman 190cc, RWD, 7.00 torque, model #ended in74541. Bagger torn and cant get a replacement anywhere. And the self propel works half the time. This thing was beast for 11yrs. Now everything is so damn expensive!!
I hear ya! If you can still find the HRX models, I should consider that. With the exception of the engine itself (it is the newer GCV 170/200 version like this mower) it maintains most of the better characteristics the the HRN line omitted for cost savings. Ball bearing wheels, better control cables, better drive belt baffle to keep debris from fouling the belt, lightweight yet durable poly deck, etc. Even though Honda will cease producing push mowers this year (maybe next, I forget), they are a far superior machine, and should have plentiful parts supplies well into the future. Hope this helps. Cheers!
Front valve cover leaking yet? Bought mine in 2020. 1st, 1 month old, mower went back as Honda messed up with metal to plastic layer under deck. I RTVed the heck out of new mower to keep the cutting debris from pushing down the plastic until there was blade strike. There is a posted video one t-off owner posted if ya search. Noticed Honda 216 now a pushrod, to save bucks along with plastic wheels, still paid $409 at Lowes. Local repair shop will not touch Big Box sold mowers! So has $$$HondaBond worked for the rest of you on resealing the valve cover? Also many having to replace o-ring around bottom of fill tube..looking for right o-ring now. BTW, I have to tilt mower twice to get all? of oil out. My fill tube blocking or I tilt mower to fast to avoid spills...
Loved your video, great sense of humor, with the Clint stunt. And exactly what I needed for buying one of these for my son, who just moved out. Too bad about the cheesy missing wheel bearings, and cable but maybe some lithium grease or needle bearing instead of the bushing could beef that up like the old Toro's have in them.
Love the video. Hate the tabs holding the lid on. I bought one a few weeks back and it took me 5 minutes to figure out how it was held together and another 5 because the tabs didn't want to let go. The motor did run pretty sweet though.
Yep Mr Bill, I fiddled with a while, then decided it would make a good video. Mr Bruce mentioned he though the shroud would get cracked easily. He's right. Cheers!
I love this mower, maintain it, and it will last for years and years. I luckily have the ideal storage situation and keep up on my maintenance. As far as the wheels go, I'm sure they'll last just as long as most of the residential ones will, maybe longer. I've always popped my wheels off and spray a little lithium grease on them anyway once a year. Rust ain't much of an issue with proper storage and maintaining the deck. Usually treat any rust right away (havn't had any), cutting wet grass clean... it off right after and run it to dry it out, and spraying some fluid film on the underside in those wet situations help.
Thanks for watching. This same mower just came back to me, and I'm sad to report, the front wheels are very wobbly. And the rear drive wheels almost smooth. There's a lot to like about this mower, and it sounds like you take care of it well.
@@TheLawnmowerLady No problem, definitely good content. I do some small engine repair on the side myself. I still keep my old mtd with a old school 3.5hp flat head briggs in storage as a backup. My first as a home owner, I retired it for the honda after about 10 years. Just way underpowered for the grass and got tired of the fuel boiling in the gas tank in the summer heat. So far no complaints so far and I've had the electric start version since they introduced them.
@@joetroutt7425 My days off work may require it. Flip it, spray it off with a hose, dry it and whatever lube I have handy, think I used wd40 the last time because it was right there. Comes down to how you treat the equipment.
Maybe mower might have been turned on its side the wrong way? White smoke is usually excess oil in the wrong places burning off, or over filled oil in the crankcase. Check the oil level, replace the air filter if it's saturated in oil. If you must get under the deck, it's best tilt the mower back on the handlebar. Worst case, turn the mower over with the air filter side up in the air, and the oil dipstick side towards the ground.
@@TheLawnmowerLady I changed the oil today and refilled with Honda 10W30. It only took about 10oz. for the dip stick to read full (not screwed in). The 12 ounces Honda requires for this engine actually overfills it. I also replaced the air filter which did not have any oil on it. Whatever the issue was, it started first pull without a trace of white smoke and runs like a top.
Thanks Mr Gary! That green knob controls the mulch baffle on the under side of the deck. In retrospect, I guess I skipped over it as it was not much different than on previous mowers. Cheers!
Hi Lawnmower Lady. I am noticing wear on the rear wheels of my HRN216 mower. So, my question is Will rear wheels for a HRX216 mower fit/work on my mower? TIA!
I wish I knew. I do know the wheels on the HRX are better, with ball bearings. The real key is the gear on the inside, if that is the same. I know on older Honda mowers, you could just replace the tread on the wheel. No sure if that is an option here. Thanks for watching.
You seem to be comparing it as if the HRN216 is a replacement for the HRX (which also had a larger version of the same new engine for the revamp) But the HRN is the entry level Honda (a few hundred $ cheaper) So it’s more of a replacement for the old steel decked HRR I guess. 🤷🏼♂️ I ended up getting the HRN216VYA (bladestop) version to backup my Timemaster. It’s a nice light mower…I’ve never regretted getting the bladestop version. Though it seems all the prices went up $100 since the start of the year…glad I went ahead and got one! Probably good for the repair business-lol
Thanks for watching. It's a good mower for some folks: those who will take care of it and how they mow. You're probably right about comparing it better to the HRR. (It has better wheels for sure) Cheers!
In the past, it was fairly easy for many to prefer HRR216 over HRX217 K5 mainly due to the pricing difference, and knowing that they would both last for years. But now, HRX217 K6 is many many times more durable and solid than HRN216 and is often on sale:)
@@TheLawnmowerLady BTW, given the level of your expertise, does the HRX217 K6 series (current generation; 2020-present) differ in any other aspect than the engine (ex. wheels, deck, cables, transmission, fit and finish etc.) from the HRX217 K5 series (the previous generation; 2015-2019)? Also, what year did Honda begin using Nexite decks for its HRX 217 series?
I believe the HRX model (at least from last year) still have some of the higher quality engineering -ball bearing wheels, better cables, etc., that were there before. The underside does not expose the belt like the HRN, and the composite deck is rock solid for plastics. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
@@TheLawnmowerLady Well said. I have a Toro commercial and you can't compare those to any homeowner model. I always wanted to try out the Honda commercial but there's a big jump in price and weight over the HRX versions.
The kind of a review I like - practical! The thing I didn’t like was the one piece cover for the recoil start cord. Would prefer bolts rather than clips. No one has explained to me why Honda is discontinuing making their gas mowers at the end of 2023?
I honestly think it was based on the abundance of cheap and inexpensive mowers, that along with the writing on the wall regarding gas/petrol powered mowers. Battery powered is not there yet, but eventually they will overtake the market.
@@TheLawnmowerLady It seems a shame to see them go. The gas powered mowers run forever (with proper maintenance) and yes the electric ones haven’t got the power and range yet so it feels like Honda is jumping the gun. Here in Canada Honda mowers are higher priced but they are very durable. The thing that I don’t like is the difficulty of reassembling the carburetor after cleaning and the twin blade feature for extra maintenance costs when in my opinion it’s not necessary.
@@richardmorse5307 I agree. Honda mowers in general are far superior to any other on the market. It's a shame they decided to leave N. America. The HRX series (with the GCV160/190 engine and the Nexite deck) is the last great residential mower they made. Cheers!
If you do minimal yearly maintenance of your 216...for the vast majority of owners, there is no 'ugly' only super reliable and an awesome mower..and no very expensive batteries to buy ever :)
The did NOT go away from the composite decks, this is the lower model. They still make the HRX series with the composite decks. This is the lower model the HRN.
I was expecting a cameo appearance from Clint Eastwood! Nice job Stella of reviewing the Honda. Lots of improvement to the engine area. I love Hondas to flip. If i owned a Honda mower and didnt have a place to store it out of the weather, for what those mowers cost , i would store it in the living room! Lol. Stay safe Stella.👍🔧🇺🇸Roger
So I have a question this is the VKA model which is what I had but had to return for a couple reasons one being a oil leak & other being spider web cracking all over the side of the engine block & it was pretty bad looking.. I'm getting another one cause for the money it's the best on the market for homeowners in this price range. I kinda want the VLA model with the blade stop but with the clutch I worry about it being dependable. Would you stay away from the one with the blade stop cause of more extensive parts to go wrong & should it be dependable. Thank you in advance
The blade stop is a good thing. My concerns are more with the newer engine design, i.e. smaller oil dump means higher potential to run it out of oil. Secondly, the lack of baffles to keep debris from entangling and derailing the belt. Thanks for watching!
@TheLawnmowerLady The belt guard was another concern for me but the alternative mowers on the market are just junk period. Plastic carburetors I stay away from as it's a sign of a total pice of crap. I did get the VLA & been using it a few times & I like this mower a lot & hopefully it will stay dependable but small oil capacity & belt guard & plastic cam shaft makes me worry about longevity for sure. All I can do is hope I continue to have a good experience. Thank you & God Bless.
Hi! I really like like listening to a woman explain this stuff!👍🏻👍🏻 My problem is the self propelled hootenanny sticks in the go mode! She don’t wanna stop when I let go off the handles 🤔🤔 other than that she’s running fine. It’s a Honda GCV 160 AWD. What day you?
Thanks! I sounds like something is snagging or restricting the cable. I've seen them bent completely in two when someone folds down the handle bars, and pinches the cable. make sure it's not kinked. After that, maybe something with the thumb lever mechanism? I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
I bought one 2 months ago. First time out of the box, it took many pulls. Since then, every four or five starts if I have it running, then stop to empty bag, it takes a few pulls to restart. I thought, "its new, break in period". Now, chord gets jammed.... as in, "won't pull". Loathe this mower.
The father in law bent the crank on his 3 year old hrr216 so he got a new one like in your video and gave old one to me. Whole new engine block on hrn. The crankcase opens on the too while the hrr splits in half diagonally.
HRX and HRN are two different series that goes together. HRX is premium and HRN is entry level, so you can not say that the wheels are worse, because HRN is a different series, not a newer one. You can still buy HRX series
great video.. i was wondering if you've found any solution to the rubber boots for the cables? usable parts from other mowers parts catalogues that will fit ?
Unfortunately no, they are an integral part of the outer cable system, and get threaded onto the cables before the cable ends are terminated. Thanks for watching.
I think they are a quality option for those in EU. They have basically shut down residential lawnmower production in N. America. They are (were) a far superior machine. It's a shame they shut down here. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
At 7:45 u show a diagram of the transmission assembly. On that diagram top right, part designated as 3, the connects to the spring marked 8.... what does that piece 3 attach to.... got everything apart to change the belt but when I unhooked the spring from the transmission It came out with that 3 piece and I couldn't figure out where it attached to..🤷♂️ Any help would be great. My boss wants to finish mowering her lawn and I'm not trying to buy her a new lawn mower..🤦♂️ Thanks
If you’re referring to that folded flat metal bracket, you’ll find a slot, almost impossible to see, but that’s where the bracket fits in. The spring tension holds it in place. Hope this helps.
@@TheLawnmowerLady Thanks darlin'... Hopefully I can knock this off my charitable help gone wrong todo list today and focus on not mowing my own lawn for once, LoL...🤦♂️ Have a good morning and enjoy the rest of your day..💯
Do you think starting is worst on these due to emissions? My 10 year old Honda hrr216 started first pull everytime. This new Honda hrx217 I bought takes 8-10 pulls to start it. I talked to Honda and they said it’s due to running it in temperature less than 50 deg ferenheit, it’ll make the mower harder yo start. I never had issues with my older one
I have quite rugged and uneven terrain due to mole activity. Do you think think this mower can cut it? :) Or should i look for a mower with a stronger engine? And better quality wheels.
I’d buy this used with 200 hours before I’d buy any other push mower brand new. My number one choice hrx217vka (I have had one for 8 years love it). My second choice is the mower this nice young lady is teaching us about.
I currently run (2) Honda HRX 217 HYA mowers. from 2021. They have gone cheap on the wheels, and they used to have tires, Now they are just "Skins" and after a while (Which is to soon for me) they fall off. Honda has made some positive improvements, (I have been running their mowers for about 33 years) but some of them are a hindrance rather than a help.
@@appleztooranges No. I have heard some of the models with the Auto Choke feature develop issues in a few years. My mowers start up on the first pull going into their third year of use. I do run ethanol free gas every time I use them. And drain the tank and carburetor bowl before I put them away for the Winter. Just bought another about a week ago since Honda will quit making them this year.
Absolutely will work to assist with assembling all the gaskets and spacers. If you mean permanently, they probably should be shorter. Thanks for watching.
Nice! I really appreciate the tips and tricks. I have yet to work on one of these models and would have been lost without your help. My only question is, was that an NGK spark plug? And did it taste like rice?
I have this mower, it doesn't like dusty conditions or rough condition like I have in my front yard, lots of dust, acorns, leaves, debris even though I stay on top of it and rake several times a year. The belt is going off track and gets stuck and you lose the smart drive, I hate it. I had to replace the belt already three times in 2 years and it took me 1H30. Many users reported this issue on Honda website.
They have fallen down so far since the original HR21 series. On those original mowers from the early 80s they not only had proper sealed ball bearings in all the wheels but you could also change the rubber tires off the wheels when they wore out the treads.
Ahhh, yes. I replaced one of those with this HR215 back in 2000. It was gifted to me from my Dad, and I unfortunately let the oil get too low. It overheated and seized. Not knowing then, what I know now, I would have fixed it. I regret replacing it.
So, to note some discrepancies in your video: The HRN series replaced the HRR series, which is mid to entry level machines, not the HRX series which is the premium residential models. The HRX series also gets this similar revision of engine being the GCV200 with the HRN's GCV170. Both the GCV170 and GCV200 engines revert back to a pushrod design instead of the cam in head design of other GCV and the GSV engines. This is all moot now due to the mower line stopping production this year in the US.
Thank you Stella, nice review on the newer Honda. I’m not too keen on the newer model due to not being aluminium and one blade system. I think you meant to say Pablo in the intro😀🇦🇺
@@TheLawnmowerLady was looking at specs looks like one blade with another two attached, the older models of Honda 196 had 4 blade system😀 Funny enough the new decks are made of a material called NeXite on that resists breaking and doesn’t rust a lighter weight material.
67 less parts, has the price gone down versus the prior year? Been researching to replace my Husq and am only seeing two legitimate gas choices where I am. This line and the Toro line. Disappointed to see that my replace cycle has coincided with this cheapening. Have heard nothing but good raves about the Honda lines/history, so with this having so many changes should it really even still be considered the same model /line? Gets kind of confusing hearing people say they've had a hrn216 for X number of years and they swear by it only to find that the model I can get my hands on isn't really the same thing and the complaints I hear about it are consistently similar. Make me hesitant to pull the trigger on the wallet....
That is a good question. The mower is back with its owner, so I can't really answer that. Maybe give it a try? Many shops have a lenient return policy if the parts don't fit. You might have to pay a small re-stocking fee. Thanks for watching! Edited to add: I got this mower back a few weeks ago for an oil change. The wheels were very wobbly already.
@@TheLawnmowerLady Home Depot sells the 8" wheels with bearings in stock.. I think I'm going to try them out.. Just not sure if the drive gear is the same or not. Maybe you can tell me.. I have mine on order and will be here this week brand new. Can't wait to try it.
I'm not sure, and can't look it on this phone. 😂 Lol. But I can tell you, if you overfill the GCV 160 engine past where the governor control goes in oil will leak out there. I'm assuming there's not a seal, since they cut down so many parts on this engine redesign
I was called by a nice lady. She has hrn new in box..sat for a year in her garage in the box. After set up would not start....took carb off and all this nasty yellow gas came out..quick clean on carb fresh new non ethanol..fired up 1st pull. Electric start too..battery charges when running...
So those metal inserts on carb cover are gone? OK. My Subaru power washer 175 has studs. But the metal inserts are still there. And yep they do fall out
An HRN shouldn't be compared to an HRX which is an next level up. Honda didn't go cheap. The HRX line has a NeXite deck, ball bearing wheels that are also a little larger and a GCV200 engine. None of these features come on any HRN models. HRX models do cost considerably more for that reason. The commercial line costs are higher yet. For most homeowners use the HRN line is just fine.

Same here. Still love this mower!🥰
Very detailed and comprehensive overview 👍👍👍

I have just bought a 216 and this was a very good explanation of the workings. Thank you, Lawnmower Lady.

Thank you for showing how the wheels come off . Very good video , thank you .

I've been a Honda fan for many years. Too bad they had to cut some corners to stay competitive. Thanks for watching. Cheers!

First off I love Clint Eastwood!I haven't worked on one of those yet,but I do like the fact they went to studs and you don't have to take off all the baffles to change transmission.
Those are some positive changes Mr JB. I just hate they cheaped out on the wheels. Most Hondas push like a dream, these won't last. Cheers!

@@TheLawnmowerLady awesome! I’m more into snowblowers but been collecting everything Honda. I’ll watch your video on changing belts
@@TheLawnmowerLady great video
Yeah my Toro recycler purchased at HD 25 years ago has really impressed me. I'm sure the new models don't go nearly that long.
Very nice review on the Honda HRN216 Mower. Thanks for sharing this information with us. 👍🏼👍🏼🙂🙂
I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
I just got this lawnmower today. And I love it. So much easier to mow my hilly yard now.
Awesome Ms Donna! Cheers!
I just bought my first Honda also. Love it!
Nice! Gave me some great laughs - Cheers Stella!
👍
Glad you enjoyed it Anders! Cheers!
I appreciate you watching. Just keep an eye on the oil level. The newer engine design reduced the oil sump by about 4oz. Cheers!
Thank you! So no side discharge? I am worried about undercarriage build-up of clippings cuz I prefer to mulch bagless. Thoughts?
That’s a huge design flaw IMO. Lots of folks report derailed drive belts with the smallest amount of debris. Thanks for watching.
Just purchase my HRN216 over the weekend. Love it
It's a good mower for sure. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
Quality control is not the top priority it seems any more with Honda. Sad day.
Cheers!
Yep it’s unreal even for parts now
Front valve cover leaking yet?
That certainly won't hurt. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
He's right. Cheers!
I dislike the new engine cover with the tabs a lot!
@@richardmorse5307 You aren't alone 🙂
All I can say is, stop mowing wet grass.
@@joetroutt7425 My days off work may require it. Flip it, spray it off with a hose, dry it and whatever lube I have handy, think I used wd40 the last time because it was right there. Comes down to how you treat the equipment.
I’m getting white smoke on start up. Only lasts a few seconds and clears up. Otherwise it runs great. Any idea on the smoke?

I ended up getting the HRN216VYA (bladestop) version to backup my Timemaster.
I agree!
Thank you for the great review. What are thoughts between the HRN and the HRX model? Is it it worth it to move up to the next level? Thanks.
I believe the HRX model (at least from last year) still have some of the higher quality engineering -ball bearing wheels, better cables, etc., that were there before. The underside does not expose the belt like the HRN, and the composite deck is rock solid for plastics. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
@@TheLawnmowerLady Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like the HRX is the better bet. Have you had any experience with the commercial HRC version?
@@joeraptor1 my personal mower is an older Honda commercial mower. Much higher quality components.
Cheers!

Yes Ive got a few customers running these engines
I bought one 2 months ago. First time out of the box, it took many pulls. Since then, every four or five starts if I have it running, then stop to empty bag, it takes a few pulls to restart. I thought, "its new, break in period". Now, chord gets jammed.... as in, "won't pull". Loathe this mower.

The father in law bent the crank on his 3 year old hrr216 so he got a new one like in your video and gave old one to me.
Whole new engine block on hrn. The crankcase opens on the too while the hrr splits in half diagonally.
Yep, total engine redesign, not always for the best either.

They have fallen down so far since the original HR21 series. On those original mowers from the early 80s they not only had proper sealed ball bearings in all the wheels but you could also change the rubber tires off the wheels when they wore out the treads.

Funny enough the new decks are made of a material called NeXite on that resists breaking and doesn’t rust a lighter weight material.
@@TheLawnmowerLady current models have a blade off system which stops the blades 3 seconds after you let go of the handle/bar
They are putting the same engines on the latest HRX line. If I was in the market for a new mower, that's what I would choose. Thanks for watching!
Do you think the older 8" wheels with the bearings will go on with no problems.. like the hrr series wheels?
@@bombidude please let us know. I’m sure others will want to know if they fit. Thanks!
So, did they fit?
Those are nice mowers just alot of money was looking at them yesterday at lowes...
They are a bit on the pricey side. Thanks for watching Mr Thomas!
Can you check the parts illustration to see if they put a oil seal on governor arm where it comes out of engine
I'm not sure, and can't look it on this phone. 😂 Lol. But I can tell you, if you overfill the GCV 160 engine past where the governor control goes in oil will leak out there. I'm assuming there's not a seal, since they cut down so many parts on this engine redesign
I Like And Love. All Info You Bring.

AWESOME
Thank you! Cheers!
The gx is available on the commercial model. Not exactly cheap but . .
It's more like the old school ones.
I honestly think money spent on a commercial mower is well spent.
Great video …. 🌅👸🏽
Thank you! Cheers!
I was called by a nice lady. She has hrn new in box..sat for a year in her garage in the box. After set up would not start....took carb off and all this nasty yellow gas came out..quick clean on carb fresh new non ethanol..fired up 1st pull. Electric start too..battery charges when running...
Good stuff! Thanks for watching.
So those metal inserts on carb cover are gone? OK. My Subaru power washer 175 has studs. But the metal inserts are still there. And yep they do fall out
They sort of waffle about on the commercial mowers, but this is the first I've seen on a residential mower. Thanks for watching!
Wonder if an HRX wheel will fit on an HRN?
I wish I knew. The front wheels are probably interchangeable, the rear ones, likely will have different drive gears. Thanks for watching.
