  • Here is a video tutorial on how to easily tie a dropper loop rig for bottom fishing, one of the most effective rigs for offshore is the double dropper loop. This rig allows you to fish multiple baits both live and dead while getting down to the desired or necessary depths to obtain strikes. It's very effective when targeting grouper, snapper, grunts and many more bottom dwellers. Come along as I walk you through step by step on how to properly tie the dropper loop. If you enjoyed this instruction, please give a thumbs up, comment and subscribe. Thank you!

    Cpt. Joshua, Neat video. The only thing I learned that you did not go over was to be sure you come in from the back side of the hook or it does not hang right. I know you showed it (twice) but when I learned it I missed that part and made several the wrong way. DUH!!! I surely do watch it now. Tight Lines and Happy Times Dude!

    Great instructions, super clear, you might want the think about placing the loop through the hook the other way, when using a normal j hook it will help to sink the hook in better, obviously not as critical with a full circle type.... just a tip.... fish hard guys and gals!!!

    Awesome video Josh. I've been fighting this knot since last season and am gonna try your twist to you and away trick. One question, at 7:29 any concerns that the line being pulled against the end of the crimp of the hook eye will fray or get cut during an extended battle? I surf fish in NC and a drum or striper can take over 5 minutes to bring in. I've always been worried about the line being cinched up against the hook like that since it's essentially just a cut steel end.

    Hey Josh. I'm trying to tie this rig using #60 Yo-zuri Fluorocarbon leader material. I'm having a difficult time getting the initial haywire twist, as well as getting the knot to sinch down evenly. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. I could tie all the knots without the twist, but i want the rigidity that the twist brings to the hook line. Thanks.

    Added to favorites....looks like an easier/better way to get more length between hook and main line than just using a surgeons loop for the hooks without it being too floppy so as to get tangled during casting.

    When using circle hooks the 'proper' way to have the hook tied is with the line coming out of the eye towards the point of the hook, not towards the back as shown in this video. Of course you'll still catch fish either way, but there are loads of great articles and videos showing the difference, with how the hook rotates in the fishes mouth. Otherwise, this vid is freaking awesome!

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  7 років тому

  • @barretharms655
    @barretharms655 2 роки тому

    I like to strengthen your dropper hook rig but personally I use the heavier line2design that part of the rig and then I add half-strength Breakaway leader to the bottom small loop on one side and large loop on the other side of course I attach to led to the large loop. Then I had a snelled hook for the drops. Finally you never told us what to do with the swivel but I know where that goes obviously. But yeah I'm putting half-strength Breakaway later on each of those points except for the swivel simply because anything should be able to get away from me without me losing the entire rig. Now as for the exact measurements on where to be putting your ties. I suggest you use whatever's comfortable for your neck of the woods.

  • @seancpcp

    I am doing exactly what you are but when I go to pull on the tag end and the main end, my looper knot shrinks until it is completely gone. In other words, I cannot tighten the knot to hard or it undoes the knot that I have created. Have you had this problem before?

    Nice vid I use double surgeon loop knot for this, is there an advantage to this way?

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  7 років тому

      There are so many knots, it really boils down to ease of use, strength and preference. If you have a knot that works for you, no need to change it, unless you just wanted to try something new of course.

    • @jbach711able
      @jbach711able 7 років тому

      I believe this knot is stronger. This knot is around 60+%. The advanced surgeon loop is less than 50%. If you can use thicker line and get away with, it is easier to tie.

    • @jbach711able
      @jbach711able 7 років тому

      The twist is a good little trick, but I would suggest using out turned eye hooks or putting the line threw the opposite way of the video. Will make the hook gap open up more, not hide behind the shank.

    It should be mentioned that while dropper loops are great for keeping the hook away from the main line they are a weak knot. If you are using dropper loops the leader needs to be double or more the weight of the main line.

      Stephanie Taylor just because you're a girl doesn't mean it'll be any less difficult for you. I'm sure I will have a lot of issues when I first give it a try, but like they say practice makes perfect!

      If you want something simple and strong use a Surgeon's loop.

  • @leeboy7139

    You need to figure out a way to have the line go in from the front of the hook and not the back. It might make only a 10% difference in hook ups but there is difference. Circle hooks work best when the goes in from the front.

      +Lee Boy I honestly have not had any issues with the way I have it setup. No need to recreate the wheel if it's not broken.

    Nice rig. I use those very knots as well. People tell me when they see it. Look at that cluster fuck. Then I'm pulling up two snappers at a time. Before you know it there like show me how u did that again.. off shore fishing in south Louisiana!!!!!!! Home sweet home. Now I also use a double rigger with two snell knots instead of those knots as well. I would like to see if u can figure it out. It's kinda though. I needs to be one continuous line. No splice ons. Let see what u got.

    its true it's all about money I am a charter captn out of NSB fl on the east coast and only the commercial guys with a$ 30,000.00 doller reef permet can keep them we don't even have a min season it's all about taxes on the reef permits and export of the fish it's BS.....I catch on a ave on a four hour off shore trip in the summer months 5-15 big reds I mean like 15 to 25 lbs we some times haft to move spots because you can't get past them and it starts 5 miles off and can go all the way out to 50 miles it's crazy. open red snapper season PLEASE.......

      I know, it stinks for us recreational guys. All we can do is keep going to the meetings and voicing our opinions. They have so called scientist with PhD's that have never been on the water making judgement calls because they are probably tied into the monetary conspiracy ring in some way or another.

    Idk but this was impossible to do with a clear line it just wouldn't twist

      @Saltyscales  7 років тому +1

      The color shouldn't matter, were you able to get a good grip on the line?

      Joshua Taylor I was using a 20 pound line and wasn't able to get a good grip but managed to pull it off and made them not as good as yours tho

    You make a nice knot and then you thread it into the hook from the wrong direction. Tension will pull the hook point out not drive it home.

      Joey clark I've used this rig both ways, I've never seen a definitive difference in the hookup ratio and I guess until I do or someone does a thorough study, I would recommend not sweating the small stuff.
