lol as a 76 year old male, i was using this style of fishing when started fishing, i found this to be very good for all types of fishing especially for bigger fish where i used a float with it, caught many big pike where i was located,
Hey. Thanks for this video. I've watched a hundred of these and most speed through, assuming we saw a past video of them tying a similar knot. You took your time, and explained very well. Also, you made sure we could see what you were doing, considering that fishing line is very thin and hard to view.
I learned how do this with my spinning tackle I use a length of 30 pound test mono and tye it to my 15 pound test mono and use the three turn surgeons knot the knot you showed every body how to tie well it works great I was very surprised
Thanks for sharing this rig ... for years i've used the surgeons knot at the bottom because of the weight, but never to get the line to line union...uni to uni, blood, or albright and others are mainly used...but the surgeons knot it's pretty strong, and with 3 twists even stronger! really nice! as I say: "nunca lo pense" I never think about it...plus the hook stays in a very good angle to the line, not too long and not to short...then again Thanks! Lautaro, from Chile. KEEP ON FISHING!!!
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment. Yes, the surgeon's knot is a very good choice for line to line... it tested out to be stronger than the uni to uni, blood, albright, and all other popular knots except for the FG knot in my testing of it. Just know that if you're using braid, then do a 6 turn surgeon instead of the 3 turn surgeon for mono to mono connections. Here's a link to a test of the surgeon knot strength with various turns in case interested: www.saltstrong.com/articles/surgeons-knot/
Thanks for the tutorial... I'll be trying fluke fishing in jersey this Labor Day weekend and will definitely use this rig with two drop loops! I can't imagine an easier way for this rig! 👍
I agree that the "dropper loop knot" is a pain to tie. What shocked me most is that this surgeon's knot tested out to be stronger than the dropper look when I put them head to head (won 5 out 5 tests)... I'll never tie a dropper loop knot again.
I'm going to try this next spring for sheepshead fishing under bridges with live fiddlers. I was using a carolina rig with egg weights but I have to retie every time I switch weights or hooks. I also get a lot of tangles with the carolina rig in heavy structure and current in deep water. Thanks for the tip.
Glad to see that you enjoyed this dropper rig setup video. Hopefully it saves you some valuable time out on the water when switching hooks/weights. Tight Lines!
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment. If you like this video, you'll love our website... here's a link in case you have not yet checked it out: www.saltstrong.com
Good stuff. Thank you. One question: given that both loops are for making it easy to swap out different hooks or sinkers, couldn't you use the same approach from leader to main line? I'm thinking like tying the swivel to the main line snug, then tying a loop at the top of the leader, and using the same technique (through then over) to attach the whole leader/dropper to the mainline without having to cut the thing off if you want to change off the dropper. What are your thoughts? Thanks!
Yes, it's pretty good for bottom fishing from a boat too. If using live bait, I'd recommend tying a leader off the end of the loop knot for the hook so that the bait can have more room to swim around.
Thank you for your question! We have a massive library of fishing tips on our website along with a search feature to let you quickly filter down to find help you're looking for, so just go to www.saltstrong.com/ and use the Search feature in the top menu.
Also Luke - on that previous video he uses a different knot for the dropper hook. I'm curious as to whether you use these instead of a surgeons knot and if so when
So simple yet so powerful! Awesome vids! Luke, you should teach a fishing course at a University! Your style is very easy to follow and anyone can easily learn. Keep up the great work!
Absolutely! It's the strongest loop knot for tying into the middle of a line that I've tested so far. And if you need more line for the tandem rigs, then you can tie a strand of line to the end of the loops.
Good video, have you ever tested using a figure 8 loop knot to make the loop for the hook as a substitute for the surgeons loop knot. I have heard that the figure 8 loop is stronger than the surgeons loop knot.
I tested the surgeon's loop knot against the figure 8 and the surgeon's loop won when used on a fluoro leader. But results on knots often varies due to the line being used so you may very well have heard accurate info based on a test using a different line. And that's why it's very smart to test knots on the lines you use so that you know you make the right choice.
Would you recommend useing that surgeons knott when useing braid on your main line to a heavy monofilament leader such like 100 lb test? For chasing shark
Honestly just about anything. The benefit is that your bait is suspended slightly off the bottom (just however high above the sinker you put it), which is usually a better presentation for bait fishing than just having it lie on the bottom.
Yes, the surgeon's knot is a very good choice for tying braid to mono/fluoro... with braid, just do 6 twists instead of 3 because braid needs more wraps. Here's a post we did showing strength test results for the surgeons knot: www.saltstrong.com/articles/surgeons-knot/
+Salt Strong Hey, thanks for the quick reply and the answer. I usually use a uni to uni but this knot is so much quicker and easier. When blackfishing, my fingers get mighty cold and if you've ever blackfished before, you lose a lot of rigs. Thanks! Tight lines.
I have never seen a circle hook on a hardbait, but I would not recommend using them because circle hooks need more time to slide into the corner of the mouth compared to what a hard bait would allow. A few years back I tied some flies with circle hooks thinking they'd help ensure that not fish gets gut hooked... but I noticed that my hook set ratio plummeted so switched back to J hooks.
As my hands and eyes don't work like they used to, I use the Surgeons Knot to attach my leader to the main line when on the water. Do you see any problem with this? Thanks
Not at all... the surgeon's knot is surprisingly strong for line to line connections if done properly. Here's a strength test we did on it to show the amount of twists needed to maximize strength based on the line types that you're using: www.saltstrong.com/articles/surgeons-knot/
I have since found a better rig for exploring new areas without getting snagged on the bottom... here's a link for details: www.saltstrong.com/articles/texas-rig-weedless-shrimp/
So I've been experimenting with droppers and find that making the loop and the length between loops requires voodoo. Any tips to standardize 2 loops evenly spaced and same size loop would be appreciated. I did make a peg board and still can't standardize everything. The dimensions are always off 1/2 inch to 2,3, 4 or more inches. Thanks!
@@SaltstrongI see how using a loop to attach the hook is convenient. However, doesn't that make the rig more visible to the fish or is it not an issue?
This 3 turn surgeon's knot is one of the strongest loop knots I've tested. So it'll be just as strong (or stronger in some cases) than other loop knots.
Could you use this knot setup for terminal tackle? By that I mean form the loop at the end of a leader (minus the weight and no middle hook) and switch between a plastic/jig or hook for live bait, say under a popping cork. (I mean I know you "could" but would the action and strength be workable?)
Yes, this knot can be used for terminal tackle, but I wouldn't recommend this quick change style for using artificial lures because it'll decrease the amount of action in the water the lure will have plus it could get difficult to pass a bigger lure with multiple hooks through the loop. But there is a way to use the surgeon's loop to allow for lots of action in the water... I'll made a video about exactly how to do that soon.
+Salt Strong Thanks for the response. I really like this ability to switch out to a different hook without having to constantly lose leader. Thanks for all the great videos.
Wish I could have seen this 30 years and a couple hundred $$ ago Thanks a bunch!!
Yes. Perfect. I'm a newbie and this video is perfect..I catch soo many snags in the river... I'll be out this weekend with this set up.

The thing I like about that is how easy it is to set up. You can cut off a few feet of line after a fishing trip and tie it again in a few minutes.
Very good tutorial man ...thanks
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment. Glad to see that you enjoyed this dropper rig video.
Kids, heck!.....take a 70-year old! :)....thanks for the surgeon’s knot, I’ve been struggling with uni knots, palomar knots...oy!
Nicely done. Thanks!
Great video, I’ll be using it
Can i use the knot you used for quickly switching hooks for being able to swap different lures instead?
Thanks will most probably use this rig for my grouper setup

@@Saltstrong Will this work for reds and gags? Meaning is the knot strong enough?
I use this all the time.
Thanks so much! I have struggled with the double uni to tie the lines together. How strong is this method compared to double uni?
Simple and effective!
Thanks for making time to leave the comment on this dropper rig video. Fish On!
I use barrel swivel lower in strength (test) than leader to attack weight. So if my weight us snagged i only loose it not the hooks and baits
Very informative. Thanks

this seams simple compared to other ways ive seen.
Also Luke - on that previous video he uses a different knot for the dropper hook. I'm curious as to whether you use these instead of a surgeons knot and if so when

I'm lake fishing in So Cal with some very line shy trout and bass. Do you think this dropper rig works for such fish?
very nice
Thanks for this video, I find it very useful. (y)
Great video. Can the surgeon knot be used also for making tandem rigs leader for flounder fishing?
Absolutely! It's the strongest loop knot for tying into the middle of a line that I've tested so far. And if you need more line for the tandem rigs, then you can tie a strand of line to the end of the loops.
If line is on reel, how can I tie the dropper loop??
Will this rig work around the jetties
I am a firm believer in circle hooks

I recommend using the FG knot for connecting a heavy mono to a braid. www.saltstrong.com/articles/how-to-tie-the-fg-knot/
Nice!
What would you be able to catch with that set up that you had at the beginning of the video?
Honestly just about anything. The benefit is that your bait is suspended slightly off the bottom (just however high above the sinker you put it), which is usually a better presentation for bait fishing than just having it lie on the bottom.
For grassy areas what do you recommend?
Thanks for the tutorial. Can you use the surgeons knot when going from braid to mono/fluorocarbon leader?

Hello. Have you ever seen circle hooks on a lure, like a minnow hardbait?
I have never seen a circle hook on a hardbait, but I would not recommend using them because circle hooks need more time to slide into the corner of the mouth compared to what a hard bait would allow. can we just use a swivel
Can you use same rig with braid?
I recommend using mono for this rig, so just tie on mono leader to the end of the braid with a braid to mono knot, and it'll be good to go.
Use mono for your leader, because it's stiffer so your hooks stand out from it and it won't tangle as much.
Can this rig be tied directly to braid? Thanks
Yes. We recommend the FG knot for that connection.
@@SaltstrongI see how using a loop to attach the hook is convenient. However, doesn't that make the rig more visible to the fish or is it not an issue?

do you have to have a leader line?
Rule of thumb i learned was use lightest tackle you can get away with; so for leaders I use lighter 10-14lb test fluro
Your videos are great Luke. But the artificial lure thing it's not easy. I'm trying to use them and also understand the maps as well.

This 3 turn surgeon's knot is one of the strongest loop knots I've tested. So it'll be just as strong (or stronger in some cases) than other loop knots.
So this only works with specific hooks?
It'll work with any hook assuming that the line is thin enough to go through the hook's eye when doubled over.
Salt Strong
Alright, Thank you for the response.
Do you need a leader line?
That depends on what fish you're targeting and what line you have in your reel.
You could just tie the loop to the end of your line, and attach your lead, then come up a foot are so, and make a loop for a hook.
im a little confuse why is the main line thinner then the leader??
Your leader is the line connected to the hook and therefore it most be thicker than the main line to avoid the fish from cutting you off.
Could you use this knot setup for terminal tackle? By that I mean form the loop at the end of a leader (minus the weight and no middle hook) and switch between a plastic/jig or hook for live bait, say under a popping cork. (I mean I know you "could" but would the action and strength be workable?)
