Thanks for uploading it! I also appreciate the Household Div.' Bands, specially when they're all together. But each one of the five RM Bands is the finest it can get. They are unbeatable alone and untouchable as a Massed Band! As Mart said let's us enjoy all of them as excellent military bands, together with their different histories and sounds. The same rat tat tat of the corps of drums cited by Norman Kitching is what makes the RM Bands exquisitive and appreciated not to mention the overall skills of all musicians. Even as a foreigner I am proud of the existence and the excellency of the HMRM Bands.
Walking along with a band (best of all massed bands) has been a favourite hobby since aged 4, when I saw the Grenadiers march through my hometown before laying up their Colours in our great Cathedral. Glad that in the mobile phone era someone goes to the trouble of doing the job for those of us who can't make it on the day(s). Many thanks! Given that the sound is always a bit lost on Horseguards, and that some of the playing there is done for various other purposes, I always find the Mall and Birdcage Walk sections most joyous of all. They give it some welly, play the good old good ones and it always sounds great. And, yes, now as always I like the way the Royal Marines do it.
The Royal Marines band has always been on the top of my list as the best in the world. You don't find correct military drumming and stick drill like this anywhere else. I am an ex-Royal Corps of Signals squaddie (scaley-back colloquially) - (not Signal Corps for our American friends) and during my training at the Army Apprentice College, Harrogate; joined the military band as a snare drummer. You will probably note that these Royal Marine drummers are in fact Drummer/Buglers you don't see this in any other band denoting the Navy's Senior Service title. Other bands such as Pipe-bands have different styles of drumming and you don't see the stick drill like this. My hat goes off to these people men and women that are RM bandspersons. Let's hope that we don't see any more defence cuts which dwindle these bands out of existence.
The Greatest Military Band in the World, they are that good and some more as ex Royal Navy there playing of Hearts of Oak, always gets me misty eyed.. Steady Boys Steady
precision ....strack.....esprit de'corp......I absolutely love the uniforms , and the drum majors, leader yelling out coded song to play.....fantastic.....
The RM band is tops in my opinion. I've traveled just to see many bands, but you just can't beat the Royal marines. I'm a US veteran, but our bands can't even compare to them. Closest is the HKMG.
Ok guys calm down! It's the old rivalry between the RM and Household Div. They both are execellent military bands, each with their own qualities, performance and specific sound. At the same time due to their differences they are uncomparable. So why not enjoy a splendid performance and good piece of music of both of them and be glad they are still around after all the defense cuts lately.
Hi Christopher Trento, As no genuine RM Drum Major has offered to clarify the various positions of the Staff ; In answer to your request as to the different movements of the Drum Majors' Staff (called a "Staff" not a Mace) the Drum Major can HALT the band by signalling with the Staff by putting it in a certain position (high-up, horizontally) ..... and he can also signal for the band to STEP OFF from the HALT by putting the Staff once again in the high-up horizontal position ...... another movement to signal that the band cease playing a particular piece of music would be by the Drum Major placing the Staff high up in a vertical position .... all this is done in conjunction with the Bass Drummer noting the different Staff positions and giving "Double Beats" on the Bass Drum to draw the attention of the musicians (and drummers, of course) to the position of the Staff and move accordingly .... The Drum Majors have another part to play, and that is to perform and add "theatre" in front of the band whilst on the march by swinging the Staff in various ways, with "Swings" or "Stars" (Two different ways of swinging the Staff) When the drummers are playing their drum solos, the Drum Major's Staff is at the "Trail" The Staff is extremely heavy and nothing like the lighter versions the Guards Bands use. Hence, they're not swinging the Staff all the time and also change position of the Staff from carrying it in the right hand/arm to the left hand/arm. SuperNutkin
Here's another lesson for you, Norman Kitching, ............. it's not a "Marine" band. This is the Band of Her Majesty's ROYAL Marines. There are numerous "Marine" bands around the world, such as the United States Marine Corps or the Dutch Marines or the Indonesian Marines, but there is only one ROYAL Marines Band Service in the world. SuperNutkin
While certainly not at the standard of your HRM - there is one other RM Band in the world. the Her Majesty's Band Of The Royal Marines Association, Canada...title and name authorized and award by the Queen. These musicians are not in the Canadian military, they are citizens of a community.
Don't quite follow you, windy344 ? ........ FYI = the Band of HM Royal Marines Association are exactly that ..... They are all former Royal Marines Musicians who are now civilians. A few years ago, they formed this military band to play at RMA functions. ...... (Canada has nothing to do with it, apart from maybe the fact they toured and performed in Canada at some function recently) ....... and they're all very highly talented as they were themselves Royal Marines Musicians in Royal Marines Bands before becoming civilians.
Sorry SuperNutkin, I believe you may have misunderstood my reply. The band I referred to is based in Canada and has been since 1970. Roland White, born in Kent and a member of the Royal Marines was also a musician with the RM Band Portsmouth for many years. He emigrated to Canada in 1968. In 1970 he began to rebuild a local band in the style of the RM bands in UK..and in 1972 the Royal Marines Association UK recognized the Canadian band and invited it to represent them in Canada. The band has traveled extensively here, to several states in the US, and have played for Her Majesty during her visits. As prefaced in my first comment - the Canadian band is good - but certainly not at the level of the RM bands in UK.. we're proud of the band....but none can best the UK's Royal Marines Bands. Cheers
Very nice video. I really like that in the UK and Germany, they tend to put the lower brass section (the trombonists) in front of the formation, whilst in Switzerland, we normally have to march in the last few rows. Does anyone have a clue where this is coming from? Cheers from Germany.
How is it possible for such a low resolution video to have been uploaded in 2016? Did the uploader decide they couldn't wait a couple of minutes to upload, and so compressed the video as much as humanly possible?
Norman Kitching. If you prefer Brass Bands, then go and watch Brass Bands and don't come on here with your pathetic negative comments. This is not a Brass Band. It is a Military Band (a vast difference, don't you know) ? The Band of HM Royal Marines is THE finest Military Band in the world, so how can you say "Too much rat tat tat" or whatever that goofy comment means ? You are watching THE world's finest, so get over it, man ! SuperNutkin
I'll concede that I DON"T always like the way the Marines do it at, say, the Edinburgh Tattoo. But they are without peer at the Mountbatten Festivals and were so in the good old Royal Tournament days. And going down The Mall here they are great, flawless and hugely impressive. No faffing about, just playing it seriously and joyfully. Then you really CAN'T beat it.
Drums are the sound of the military. Sounding the attack, keeping step, on ship drums sound the call to action and signal most other things. Rat a tat tat, is a machine gun sound not a drum. Bang on nuts a brass band is not a military band, two sounds are different. Raison d' etre so different, although a brass band is a civvie version of military and classical music comes in on both sides. All the older regiments have classical elements in their marches.
Christopher Trento a static raised mace means prepare to stop! 🛑 a raised on an angle to the right mace pulled downwards slightly twice means the drum major is wanting to finish the current march and either move on to the next march (depending on what sheets you have and your plan) or stop playing, however I am talking from army band experience, Royal marines may be different 😁
well norman you have OFFENDED some one. me and possibly them saying "the drum majors swinging there maces like cheerleaders from and American high school band"
As usual, a great piece of video Mart.... but as you know I am not a great fan of the Marine band. Too much rat tat tat and not enough brass band. I found it embarrassing at times to watch, the drum majors swinging their maces round like cheerleaders from an American high school band. Of course this is only my opinion. Bring on the main event. Sorry if I offend anyone.
To the best of my knowledge, neither now nor ever have the RM Drum Majors done anything with their maces resemblant of what a cheerleader might do. The sizes (and value) of the things alone precludes that.
Norman... you confuse people... who do you think 'swings round like cheerleaders from an American High School Band?' Do you think American HS bands have cheerleaders? They do not. Do you think American HS Bands' drum majors swing their maces? Perhaps some of the upper midwest schools did so in the 1940s-1960s... a few university groups do (penn State, Ohio State). I'd say that 95% of American HS bands' DMajors don't even use a mace anymore... it was beginning to phase out in the 1970s/80s. They almost all pattern themselves exactly after the Drum Corps International drum corps. I know - as I am an American HS band director of 34 years. My band marched 400 members
Very nice job on the "Blue Devils March" - second march. Thanks for posting. I can listen to massed bands all day.
I love when the drum line extends curb to curb in the beginning. It almost plays tricks on the eyes when you’re watching it from afar.
I used to be a percussionist of Hm Royal Marines. On the march there is no band finer in music, drill, deportment, and flair.
There’s no other word for it they’re gorgeous. You make us very proud. Thank you for such a splendid display.

May I as ex Infantry just casually mention that the Royal Marine Bands are completely superb!!
accecepted.... you are welcome a

I've watched this several times with great pleasure. I suspect they are the best.
awesome sight n sound Thanks for the great footage Mart Kuiper

The drum solo at 5:17 nearly has the crowd dancing..! Brilliant piece

so the Dutch Marine Band that's wrong it's the Band of the ROYAL DUTCH NAVY of witch the ROYAL DUTCH MARINES are a part of. just for the record.
While certainly not at the standard of your HRM - there is one other RM Band in the world. the Her Majesty's Band Of The Royal Marines Association, Canada...title and name authorized and award by the Queen. These musicians are not in the Canadian military, they are citizens of a community.

Cant wait to join those guys when I'm older

Lego Captain Rex 2 more years left im almost 17
Everyone here seems to be splitting hairs and over analyzing. One thing is for certain. The Royal Marines Band is one of THE BEST!
David, je suis tout-à-fait d'accord avec vous mais il faudrait comparer dans des répertoires identiques. My best march : The voice of the Guns.
The last march being played was "Chimes of Liberty" (to answer Audrey Poulter's request) SuperNutkin
thanks super nutkin
Does anyone know the name of the march at the video's opening?
@@williamhouston4119 i think its whos on the navy blue if im not mistaken

Exactly this is a marching symphonic band, it contains not only brass instruments. Glad u pointed that out to him
" Don't come on here" ? Bit of an old boys club eh? lol
I'll concede that I DON"T always like the way the Marines do it at, say, the Edinburgh Tattoo. Absolutely faultless as only one of Her Majesty's best can be. Per Mare.
Per Mare per Terram
Exactly.
Heavens to Betsy are they good
Blimey , aint that a sparkle !
Could someone please explain the different movements of the Mace please and what they mean to the Band behind them. Thanks.
Anyone know the name of the drum solos at :40 and 5:20? Fabulous Band!
pompey nos 1 at 40 seconds and iwalla at 5:20
Thanks!
Every thing the youth of today lack disaplin a point of perpers and self respect at having achieved something

windy344 first march is Navy Blue, second is Blue Devils, the third I'll have to figure out as well.
windy344 third march is Chimes of Liberty
Could the Guards maintain that drumline? No...nuff said...
what was the last song
it's called the Chimes of Liberty.
well norman you have OFFENDED some one. me and possibly them saying "the drum majors swinging there maces like cheerleaders from and American high school band"

I agree, for a band(s) of such standing it looks a little bit undignified swinging the maces. Might look OK in a pipe band.
The voice of reason at last. I served for 6yr in the household division, I love military bands.
