Congratulations Austin.
So basically you now have a famous 1 of 1 Ibanez Ice Man, if ever there was a guitar to hold onto this would be it.
Should you sell You'll not likely be able to purchase this instrument back like your Spotlight Specials........
Just saying
Seeing this I'm really missing the IC-400 I purchased back in 1978, it was finished in Midnight Olive...........sigh
I bought a case that in a round about way looked to be suggested for a guitar I'm purchasing. I got the case in but the guitar is on back order. The more I looked at it the more I just knew it wasn't going to fit even a Stratocaster . Went through the motions of seeing if any guitars I have would fit . I stopped and was going to send it back but I tried my Iron Label in it . That guitar fit in it like a glove. The case I had the Ibanez in came with it when I bought it used. So I put a stratocaster I have in it and it fit that case better. The case I have the Ibanez in is a SKB-FS-6. I have bought SKB cases before and they weren't much. This case could rival a gator case. Well padded and safety latches with one keyed .
Oh man I remember that guitar being advertised...wow man u are one lucky 🐈? Or.... maybe u are troglys...lol..
I wish that Ibanez would reissue the Triple-Bucker Iceman like Steve Miller's, The Destroyer and the Rocket Roll. All in Korina finish Sen wood .... Amazing guitars
Trogly "won" the lottery 😳
I wish Ibanez would do more production icemans instead of only being able to get the Paul Stanley signature it’s probably their coolest shape I’ve always thought that the iceman looked like if rickenbacker designed the Les Paul
@@chrispile3878 they make a seven string (which I’m not into) and the fireman models as far as I’m aware excluding the Paul Stanley models
I get how you feel! I love the Icemans, and it practically feels like they have forgotten the model the initially made them.
@@chrispile3878 I think he means currently produce Iceman models, rather than have in the past.
Currently the only iceman in production is a 7 string, though I think the Paul Stanley model is also available.
There is a Meshuggah 8 string Iceman
I'm just baffled that they refused to replace the case. I mean, after that kind of pricetag, wow.
Yep...I'm also baffled that for a high end hand made USA guitar the inconsistencies between the marker blocks. That 3rd fret looks naff
Yeah. And also how loose the guitar fits in the case.
@Alien Wayfarer Right!? For a company like Ibanez it shouldn't be too tasking!
@@letz_getschwifty9785 yeah no kidding. Unlikely I’d purchase a new guitar at the price this is…. But if I did, every detail, including the above would need to be perfect. I think at this price you’re paying for the craftsmanship and all the little details.
I'm guessing the qc control wasn't as great because of how many they produced.
Got a 1978 Ibanez Musician thru neck with active circuitry for my 18th birthday back in 1982 and it was my main and only real guitar for recording and gigging up until a few years ago. I still have it today, battered and still kicking ass all these years later but it's now semi-retired as am I :) This beast has been smashed into amp cabs, thrown at singers down flights of stairs at venues and I never realised just how much it was worth (or would have been worth) in pristine condition as they are pretty rare these days. Has the same bridge and tailpiece as Trogly's lottery win but I switched out the bridge pup for a Seymour Duncan Invader in the mid 80s and the neck pup has since died (but I never used it anyway). All I can say is Ibanez used to make one helluva guitar back in the classic days. Always wanted an Iceman so am well jealous - enjoy your winnings Lord Trogly 👍👍👍
Ibanez is my bag so I'll share some information with you. The tailpiece is called a quickchange, Ibanez design, very nice, the version on the RBF is the cloud version used on Artists. The knobs are called Suregrip, those are the kind used from 83-86 or so. The abalone inlays are like those found in high end guitars like rocket rolls and destroyers in the late 70s/ early 80s. Gibraltar bridge, of the harmonica style as you say. The pickup configuration would have been Maxon Super58's or Super70's more likely, high end copies of Gibson PAF style humbuckers. If I saw this in a 1979 catalog I would be entirely taken in. Beautiful thing, well done you.
I found it interesting that they put the cloud on this one since it has never been used on any Iceman before it....but did show up on the Greco Mirage. Must have been where Paul Stanley had the idea to put SOMETHING back there that was decorative as well.
Since you're an ibanez guy can I ask you a question on one? I'm looking to buy the newer ibanez prestige cosmic shadow RG5320, was wondering if it's worth the 2k price tag? Thanks 🤘
@@tattooed1979 I'm not him, but I would say either a used RG3550 if money is an issue, or for a few hundred bucks more than the rg5320 a j-custom
@@TSL60-IS-GOD thanks! 🤘
11:40 That's definitely an area where the builder should have paid attention and gotten another piece of inlay to make it match the others better. Little details like that is what sets high end guitars apart from each other, and for something so super limited and special like this, I would have thought they'd go the extra distance to make it absolutely perfect. After you pointed it out I couldn't help but to get drawn to it.
You make that Iceman sound better than any Gibson you've ever played.
And it's already for sale on reverb for 100k...
I'm lucky enough to own an old Iceman in the 'traditional' black ... so, I'm very pleased for Trogly to feature another one of these superb guitars.
(I also have an old 'Destroyer', which is actually along the lines of a more aggressive Explorer, so I couldn't quite get Trogly's Explorer comparison ...)
Ibanez. Very under-rated guitars ...
that is absolutely wild and you're now obligated to ship it to me.
So much to love there for me personally. Love the finish and wood and all. Only things I think that I would change would be complete harness including all electronics. Full size CTS pots Hans selected to be over 500 KOhm, Switchcraft output jack and toggle switch, paper in oil caps despite orange drops and last but not least proper braided cable everywhere even on the pickups. Of course converted it to 50-ies wiring to. Does it really need it? Probably not while it sounds pretty good already but for me I would need to know how does it actually sound when most of the signal actually comes out of the guitar. But that’s just me and my Gibson Les Paul sickness that makes me want to have it that way even on non Gibson guitars that are HH, stop tail maple mahogany body, set neck configuration. Regarding to wood grain and sugar crystalline forming middle strip is maple and that is Korina on the side as much as I can recognize it. Korina grain is very similar to Mahogany so one can be fooled easy. So I could be wrong although I would believe Ibanez here.
My very first electric guitar was a Iceman in 1983. It sounded great then, my friend fell while playing it. Snapped the neck. Got it fixed, but it was never the same. Beautiful guitar. You should keep it
I've always loved the Iceman, I first got into them from Daron Malakian of System of a Down since he played them all throughout SOAD's early career until the Mesmerize/Hypnotize era when he switched the Gibson SGs but you still can't forget about Paul Stanley. Still an absolutely gorgeous guitar though, sounds great
Check out live concert footage from this year. He still uses Icemans a lot. (He also uses SGs.)
@@davidlachapelle6983 I do know that he switched back to Icemans a couple years ago, those are definitely awesome guitars
Too bad they didn’t make a J Yuenger Iceman for the 50th. His signature model is the coolest iceman in my opinion 🤘🤘
The blue one with the cutouts was my favorite of the bunch. I would love to play that and see how it feels . I bet its amazing
Gorgeous Iceman. It's impressive how light weight it is for the size and features. Almost too fancy for an Iceman, as I think of the black version Paul Stanley played, but I'd take it in a heartbeat.
That's korina on the outside. See if you can follow the grain anywhere (probably not) across the maple strip. Korina is soft and you're far better off with a maple stripe down the middle. I just made a rosewood topped guitar (my first carved top guitar) with a korina back and it's not much different than lighter mahogany in density, but it's really soft.
I've had a 1978 Greco Mirage for quite a while now. It's liteeally a poor man's PS10 made for the Alive II Tour of Japan. It's a solid rock and blues player. No neck dive like on other pointy guitars. Stays in tune, sits in place and plays great. Even if you don't like the style (I love it) it's a great player. Very underrated.
Usually you’ll end up putting it in a bass case because they are so big. The headstock is enormous for the guitar. I’m the seven string has the same headstock but looks more correct due to the added tuner. I always thought a tuxedo iceman would look nice with a talman style headstock. Not as aggressive looking as the normal one. I had an IC400 that I hit rodded with Seymour Duncan Blackouts and completely blacked out the hardware. Put Grover 18:1 tuners and of course a TP6. Love those TP6 tails. Like a top hat on a tuxedo. Man I miss that guitar. You almost hit the mark in the beginning: that are a blend of an Explorer and a Les Paul; the body is absolutely a takeoff from the Explorer, with the layout of a Les Paul. I do believe these were one of the first guitars Ibanez made after the lawsuits, as Ibanez was one of the actual lawsuit guitars from that are everyone talks about. Why not take two Gibsons and bastardize them together to make one of the coolest guitars of all time!?!
The wiring craftsmanship is fantastic! The soldering on the pots are high quality workmanship, very impressive 🙂👍
This video of yours drew me in like no other. I found myself feeling strong appreciation for all the way-cool details Ibanez thought to include, & I soon realized that my years-long opinion of Ibanez was indeed pretty favorable, their guitars just have a lot to like. Of course I'm working up the courage to tackle an Ibanez repair, my old 70's V has a badly-broken neck & it's been lovingly disassembled & stored in the original case for many years. It fell victim to a series of tragic mishaps, all in the early 90s, & I knew it was gonna be one of my harder repairs. But I now feel nearly ready to take on the challenge, mostly because of the invention of the humble, capable suction pig. Thanks for the great video, and good on you!
Congratulations Trogly!!!
Congrats Trogly!!!! Beautiful guitar. Absolutely love that fretboard. Sounds pretty good too!!!🎸
This episode took me back to my early twenties, when I was dying for the Ibanez Musician Series MC500, which was a beautiful neck through model. This Iceman is nearly as beautiful as that axe was. Only thing I don't like about it is that it has a maple fretboard; I like darker woods for fretboards, although even roasted maple is (barely) dark enough. I'd rock it, though - even if not for the money they likely want for it!
Flaming binding! beautiful, thanks for sharing Trog.
What a stunner, congratulations indeed. I remember when I first found out about the iceman I thought it was an ugly guitar, but I have to admit that over the last few years they've grown on me considerably. I've been tempted numerous times by the low end Paul Stanley models & I might have to pick one up just so I can add a bit of heavy metal flair to my admittedly very classic and traditional shaped guitar collection.
I like the shattered mirror models.
You most definitely got the very best of the custom shop lottery offerings in my opinion.
The artist was sweet as well...(all of me were....). Had an '83 artist back in '84. Beautiful, but so very heavy.
Congrats again!!
If Ibanez would make a "Standard" version like the RGs and have different colors and the Shark tooth inlays they would sell a ton. I just don't want a 7 string or pay the price for it to say Paul Stanley on it. Plus their blues and purples are awesome especially with a flame. Something completely different but familiar.
My one issue with this run… not a single Jet King style… I have an Ivory Jet King I and it’s one of the best guitars I own… the maple neck is rock solid, I can tune to all kinds of crazy things and it doesn’t mind at all.
Ibanez owes this model pretty much everything it is nowadays. According to the story I've read online, when KISS toured Japan, Paul Stanley got invited to meet Ibanez HQ, where they've proposed to develop a signature model of his. Paul then checked their catalog and found the precessor of what would become the Iceman - while the body shape was pretty much the same, it had three funky-looking humbuckers and a unique bridge design, among other differences. Paul had said the catalog was pretty much Fender and Gibson copies (as we well know of Ibanez from back then) and that was one of the unique models he found cool, so he proposed some changes for his model based on it. Some time later, artists the likes of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani would also get in touch and later tour the world with the now famous models that make up Ibanez line-up to this day!
This is my favorite tone I've heard this year on this channel. I really want to know what else in Ibanez's lineup has those pickups.
Congrats! Ibanez has always combined quality design with amazing bling when motivated. They are a design and marketing firm- their late 70s work with Fuji-Gen produced lovely guitars that played well. I own the relatively plain '78 2618 and it is a stunner. Your Iceman takes it to another level. Well worth the chase.
While not a carved top to maple top looks like it tapers down towards the edges. It seems thinner at the horn than at the heel.
Nice review. Not sure why the input jack is chrome instead of gold.
The 'won the lottery' feeling is definitely one I know. I felt it when I pulled the neck out of a BYOguitar LPJ kit and saw flamed rosewood.
Ibanez actually held a lottery for these guitars
My buddy got one when we were kids in 77, brown burst color. Beautiful guitar
Trogley!! It shouldn’t blow your mind!! You have actually become one of the biggest guitar channels let alone that you deal in some pretty high priced Gibson. So putting this guitar in your hands is some decent exposure for Ibanez custom shop. I mean most guitar players know about Ibanez and everything that they offer. But you’re gonna expose this guitar to a lot of people who might not be very...”hip” to Ibanez. They’re a great company that offers a super wide variety of options and price points. Definitely hang on to this one......oh yeah, what else could I possibly want?? I want this exact guitar but I want the Paul Gilbert (my guitar hero) version
Congrats Trogly, what an amazing bit of luck. I hope you enjoy having it in your collection, for as long as you decide to hold on to it. Such a stunning bit of art right there. Now this is a true collector piece, no question.
Interesting! Thanks for that bit of knowledge, my friend ✌
Back when I started going into the guitar shop in Croydon when I was a teen, I made the mistake of pronouncing the name like the Spanish name it's based on (my keyboard doesn't have the Spanish letters). The guitar shop guy corrected me that it was Aibanez (which is also what the Japanese letters spell). I thought it a bit naff, that they would mangle a name and make the mangling official.
Congratulations, Trogly! Such a fine looking and iconic electric guitar. I love Ibanez.
If I hadn't just spent $100,000 filling my car and buying groceries I'd be all over this!
Tell me about 100$ to fill a civic makes me want to get a horse
Best comment!!!
@@neil2706The way the price of wheat and apples is going, it will soon be just as expensive to own a horse.
I have an original Iceman IC-300K purchased in Chicago, early '78 with a J77 serial number indicating it was built in October 1977. It's a quality guitar that rivaled anything built at the time. The only downside, IMO are the Super 80 "Flying Fingers" ceramic magnet pickups that are glassy.
Amazing looking guitar. Those Dimarzio pickups sound incredible. Congratulations! You have definitely won the lottery with that guitar.
I remember being 14 years old and working all summer with roofing jobs to buy an iceman. It was my first “real” guitar.
I hear ya! That's awesome! Do you still have it though?
I love icemans. That one sounds extra bitey with those pups. Very cool. Congrats on an awesome win!
Center Stripe of Maple. The Black layer in the Truss Rod cover is likely ebony for the logo and not painted under the finish. Tuning it first would be nice too Austin.
The binding and inlays do it for me. So unique but subtle
The Ibanez Japan Customer "Wind Shear" looks amazing, would enjoy and in-depth review of it!
6:34 "form-fitting" ??? how will it adjust up and down???
One of my favorite guitars is my Ibanez PS120. Only downside is how easily the mirror pickguard scratches from the pick and fingernails.
It's the only classic LP style guitar I need.
Cheers!
If there was a matching Destroyer to this that would be the perfect duo!
Yea...Trogly got "lucky " with Sweetwater and getting this guitar...his show is probably won of their biggest advertising outlets! Congrats anyway! I had a buddy in high school back in the day that had an original Artist...nice guitar
Exactly. He “won” the lottery for it. Yeah, right. 😂
@@Commtech72 i love his guitar show, but c'mon! Out of all the lottery guitar's Ibanez offered, he just winds up getting the by far most popular model. I don't like them myself, and I've got a big collection. Let's get back to reality....the lucky lottery winner my ass!👅😁
And selling it for 100k 😅
Well buddy this guitar is right in my wheel house. This one is beautiful but I have the Paul Stanley version ps10 ll. Had it since 1995. Plays like as les Paul neck wise ill be honest. Made every much well as les Paul standard. Fret board neck just as good. Love that iceman you have its a beautiful guitar
CONGRATS Trogly! I'm very happy for you. Thanks for documenting it and for sharing. I think this guitar would be an excellent addition to the non-Gibson wing of the future museum. Cheers to you!
About Gotoh's plating, if you get the 510 series tuners you'll get the premium finish on them. I installed these 381s on my Ibanez AR420 and the 510s on my FRM300.
This is the cooler cousin of Gibson products:
-End frets accesibility of SG, but shape of an Explorer so I'm guessing there is no neck dive
-Spear shaped headstock of Flying V so there is near to none spring bending after the nut
-Luxury of wood, inlay and binding work and materials are sub-par with the most expensive stuff.
It's the best electric guitar sound I've ever heard on UA-cam. It's crazy that such a balanced sound comes from the bridge pickup.
Love the maple board on this. My brother had a purple one for a few minutes.
This is the anniversary Ibanez I loved from the spec sheets. A shorter scale Ibanez with that gorgeous top.
the Iceman and the destroyer have to be one of my favorite Ibanez designs of all time
Agreed 100%
In my opinion the LACS Version are beautiful handmade artworks in the highest Masterbuildclass which you actually can get but I like the american series, these are handcrafted in the us too. Especially the UCEW versions was handcrafted from Mr. Hosuno, the Chief Masterbuilder of Ibanez LA Customshop. Actually you get the UCEWs for less money.
I've wanted one of those forever! I'd like it even more if the body was flipped...The Fireman, I guess. Ibanez makes some nice quality guitars.
I just saw the price on your reverb page😂
And crazy enough...there's someone out there that will purchase it😆
@@wesleyalan9179 It sure it's a beautiful guitar though
@@50Something
Yeah,definitely 😁👍
Nice! I absolutely LOVE Ibanez quality. They pay so much attention to every single detail, imo they have the finest QC of any guitar company.
13:28 Looks to be a stamp indicating the size and quality of wood, I've seen this before in Gibson the process videos. Usually not small pieces though, maybe just by chance this one was where the stamp was. And I guess they never sanded that side any further. That's my guess.
Is it just me who wishes that Trogly would put a soft blanket over that table? Interesting fact that Ibanez was initially named in honor of Salvador Ibáñez, and the initial pronunciation was "Eebanyez" but became so Americanized to the point that it actually changed its own name in 1986 to reflect the popular pronunciation (Eyebinez).
That's a really great sounding guitar. Quality controls and Ibanez are top-notch it looks like also. Congratulations. Really sweet sounding guitar. Not hard to look at it either
I’m looking for a specific year and finish iceman. This one looks amazing but the price ibanez wants for these is beyond crazy.
yeah, and there is no other one
Lovely instrument with a lovely color and a lovely setup..Good on ya mate you are one lucky guy..🤘
Awesome video as always! Any way you might be able to make a video about the new version of the Epiphone Les Paul Prophecy?
U need to adjust your amp setting my man...then again that's just me I guess others might like it at least for the distorted part anyway u have amazing amps.did u fix that Friedman yet? Bc I used a few of those an that sound strange
I'm listening through my ok quality car stereo..sounds great to me, quite classic in my opinion. I guess it just depends really, bet it sounds great in person. You're not the only one that made that comment though🤟
I have those knobs on my gibson goldtop les paul with black plastics and it looks stunning!
Beautiful guitar. I wish they would have done a Destroyer also.
reminds me of my youth. The bridge an tailpiece on those is so far superior to the gibson stuff. I can't believe they're still making a real gibraltar.
People like to dog the iceman but it's more or less a les paul style guitar copy (but doublecut). It looks like a "fast" guitar, but it's vintage style.
Hahaha wow, this was a weird comment and way off base lol. Les paul style? I'm assuming crack is your drug or choice?
@@jscott893 ..... the only thing similar between the Les Paul and the Iceman is that they are both GUITARS.
Unfortunately the Gibraltar branded stuff on lower end guitars can be underwhelming. I had to replace a tuneomatic bridge on a made in china Artist because of a mystery rattle.
Sounding good and tuned. Sweet guitar. Great sustain!
I could be wrong but I believe Paul Stanley had a hand in designing the Iceman. He certainly had a lot to do with selling them. Because The 1st place anybody saw them was on stage with KISS. He had black ones and then came the rhinestone covered one and then the shattered mirror . When I hear the name iceman that's the one I think of 1st. And every piece of mirrored glass on that was handcut and set individually so the light would reflect in different directions. You see pictures of as original one now and the cracks on it are full of blood and dried sweat.
Nice guitar! I agree with you about the fretboard inlays, for that price and level of craftsmanship the abalone choices should have been much better matching.
Also, it doesnt have the inlays sized to the each fret, it just has batch-sized inlays like a cheap mass produced guitar.
This Iceman model smacks of something I saw KISS using back int the day. That is quite a beautiful arrangement of woods and inlays .
WOW! Can't believe you won. Freaking awesome man. Beautiful guitar.
The late Dave Bunker used to ghost build guitars for Ibanez. RIP Dave. I own a Bunker 78 ProStar, (the first headless guitar.) Don’t forget the reverse Iceman, the Fireman. (Paul Gilbert).
What a Beauty! great sounding both distorted and clean
10:59 Is it me or is there a gap between the inlay and the fretboard on the upper right of first fret inlay? The other inlays don’t have them. Sweet score regardless!
Congratulations!! It's beautiful!
id be happy if they would just make a standard run of iceman guitars again... missed my chance at a dm1 (more than once) lol
My first iceman had most of the same features as this except i had the flying fingers pick ups .
I wish i still had the bridge and pick ups ,as i have never found a better sound or feel . not even my prestige rg or 65 gibson les paul.
Awesome. Congratulations on a stunning guitar!
With Trogly winning it kinda makes us winners too, because we get to see the breakdown🙂
Does anyone know what it costed?
She is a beauty, congratulations Austin! It’s cool for us as well, since we get an in-depth look at it.
Sounds full & articulate. The growl is killer.
Congratulations that is a gorgeous guitar, I owned an Iceman and I loved it. ✌
Great video and guitar! But I think you might need to fix the eq on your amp. It is very very bright. Doesn’t sound bad, but I think the treble needs to be backed off a bit, and/or turn the bass up.
I'm listening to this in my ok quality car stereo, and it doesn't sound bad to me..sounds quite classic actually. I guess it depends on what you're listening to it through...I bet it sounds awesome in person though
Hooray, Trogly! I have always considered the Iceman as their alltime design flagship. This one shows in many ways it got the custom shop touch, bayootifool!
Soundwise I am a bit disappointed, there is a kinda parametrical equalizer flavour all over, like some frequency band is stronger than the rest, giving it a kinda nasal tone.
For the rest: there's so much to like, especially the toggle switch.
And that for a company that got instant fame for copying Gibsons, Fenders and Rickenbackers, cleaned up their act after the Gibson law suit punishment, and established their solid position in the guitar market until this very moment.
Those Gibraltar bridges are great
You can’t accidentally change their settings.
Gibson could and should take some cues from Ibanez in fit and finish. I don't even own an Ibanez, so I'm only going off of what I see here. Top notch workmanship. Gibson can't even make NAMM guitars that are at this level
Since you are into Ibanez super limited editions, maybe you should check out a few ESP Exhibition models too!
i am genuinly happy for trogly cus that is a beutiful guitar. rock on!
99,000 on reverb ridiculous
My line of thinking is that a flamed fingerboard would change the direction of the grain and MAY cause the wood to become "flimsy" and could come apart. Just my opinion. 🤗
So nice! Congratulations! Ibanez is probably my favorite brand and it looks like you got a masterpiece!
