This is quite clearly in light winds but it certainly identifies some valid points

I do so agree! Under any circumstanses have your mainsheet in one hand even loosly and when falling of, pull it untill the boat stops or capsizes.
Anything better than see it sail away from you.
I tested this myself unvoluntarely twice! (on one ocasion had to capsize the boat before it stoped.)
👍
Great vid! Please do it again in bigger wind!
Oooooooooh yeeeeeeeeeeeees !
👍
I knew that was going to be requested!
@@JoyriderTV i had my 16 blow off the beach without me once. Jib sheet tangled up, main sheet wasn't clipped to boom. Boat sailed nicely on the jib till it hit strong wind and flipped. Blew back in a couple hundred yards down beach. Shortly after my gloves, harness, and pfd blew in to beach. Good times hahah! I've always thought hanging onto main sheet if ya fall off was best bet! Looking forwards to the high wind tests! :)
When my old trap harness failed at full power in my 14T the boat immediately capsized and it was a short swim back the the boat. I believe both sails were cleated. My other hunch is that a boat with poor rudder rake and heavy weather helm is more likely to put itself in irons instead of take off.
That would do it/ I think if it was windy enough to trapeze the boat is certainly more likely to capsize.
I've read an article 'Lee/Weather Helm tuning for catamarans' and the article said, you need to set up a cat for slight weather helm. It is neseccary for safety reason - when you fall off from the boat, it'll turn to the wind and finally stop.
That is true, in this light wind there is not enough pressure, especially on the reaching course to have that effect. Hanging on to the sheet is the answer.
Not many comments or likes compared to your other content. However, as someone who is teaching themselves how to sail. This has been very helpful for my safety. Thanks for posting this
You're very welcome - this was strangely fun to make!
As always, great video & useful lesson! Thanks for taking it for the team!! Cheers
My pleasure! It was quite refreshing!
Awesome video great information thank you.
Thanks
Thank you so much my friend, for your experimentations ;)
We had last weekend a talking about this especially, and we wasn't really agree how the situation would turn, as I was saying, it's fairly possible the boat keep going alone on it's way.
Thank you very much for the video evidence ^^
I'm very glad to help.
Any other discussion points that you need settling?
Great video joe!
Thanks!
Joseph, you put my biggest terror to sleep. I can sail fairly well but terrified I would end up in the water somehow and the boat just leaving me behind to the sharks.
Yes, I thought it was quite important to do this R&D
With just a tad of weather helm, the boat would round up soon enough and go into irons. And the mainsheet shouldn't ever be cleated while underway. But, things happen, including a boat that simply drifts faster than you can swim, so thanks for the tips.
However, if the mainsheet is uncleated and jib is tight the boat is more likely to continue indefinitely.
I always appreciate the physics lessons 👍
Ha! Yes. Out of the lab and swimming again
...and what happens when Jib is cleated in - Main is uncleated and You fall of the boat no hand on sheet or tiller... boat would head off sheet would run out boat would bare away going for a jibe?... and finally Stop because jib is standing back?
Or - off she goes?
I think that the boat would not go so far downwind to gybe. At some point the wind will catch the mainsail which will turn it more into the wind.
Exactly my question as well, would be nice to see. Then going singlehanded it would add a little extra security keeping the main uncleated at all times.
i would love to see a few videos of you sailing the😢 18' solo please!! fyi thats my solo boat
Unfortunately we don't have a Hobie 18 available.
idk how it works on multi hulls... been sailing monos all my life and if you let go of the tiller on a mono it just heads to wind (unless the tiller gets stuck somehow)
In light winds unless the main is in tight the boat will just keep going - the twin hulls kind of act like the boat is on rails
Thanks for the demo, what would happen if there was a bungee cord to turn the rudder, could it turn into the wind then?
You could only have one pulling them straight which wouldn't help.
Best plan is not let go of the mainsheet
Great video!!!
Great video...reminds me a couple of weeks ago where it did happened in real...single handed with 14/20 knts...the harness stainsteel hook broke ..i felt off the HC16...she continued sailing straight about 100 meters then capsized fortunately. This was the only way the security rib would find out something happened...you can guess his surprise when he reached the capsized boat and saw no one around...
Thank you!!
Yep that is what I did smashed the street subscribe button really hard. So in short , try not to fall when sailing. So do you recommend to strap your self with boat when sailing alone?
So stupid question, when you pull the main sheet of the main sail , there’s like a ratchet that holds the sheet pulled in if you let go during a fall?
I would love to see the same experiment in higher winds, for science😁.
This answered a lot of questions, it’s one thing that I’m afraid when I will start to learn to sail.
The ratchet of the mainsheet won't hold it completely if you fall, the cleat below will.
Best thing is to hang on if you can, if you do fall in.
Strong wind testing coming up!
What about a Footstrap rope like Surfboards and SUP's have?
Eventuelly to dangerous i guess
Yeah, I wouldn't be keen - too much chance of getting tied up in it.
Great video. What's your opinion on having let's say 10/15m cable on the back, to hold in the case you fall? That's a problem even with a dinghy (a daysailer, snipe, lightning and similar, for example), that if you fall of the boat, it will probably capsizes and will be very very difficult to place it right again.
It's not something that I have very thought of. Would you have that cable trailing behind the boat?
@@JoyriderTV well, everything depends where we are sailing. I am thinking about open sea, not a bay or a lake for example. I mean, if you fall from the boat and it keeps sailng alone, that will be a big big problem in a few seconds, and a 10-20m cable loose behind the boat to secure in case of a fall, maybe could be an option - a test would be good to see if it really works (speed vs time of reaction). Or having a cable attached to you, besides I don´t like the idea of being dragged by the boat... but could be less worse than to be alone in the sea...... or someone else is monitoring you, or the risk is tremendous.
@@fernandobargueno A cable/floating rope seems to be a good idea, maybe it´s even better to attach it to the rudder in a way that if you pull that cable/rope you force the boat into a turn.
Thanks for scienceing, seeing the boat sail away was not what I wanted to see. Is there honestly no way to stay attached or safety 'kill switch' or 'dead man's switch'? fall off in light wind solo unattached and it's probable death? bit worrying.
never let go of the main sheet is my advice.
@@JoyriderTV best not so. Thanks.
@@JoyriderTV Thanks for the advice man, it seems a bit dangerous so I've swapped the Triyakamaran I've been working on for a Paramotor and I can use the ripstop nylon I was going to use for the sail on a parachute.
Se cadi indietro, la scotta randa passa sopra alla barra dei timoni, non sotto…..sarebbe interessante provare il comportamento del cat in quella condizione… continua così! Ciao!
I did it the other way to prevent damage but I agree - the behaviour might be slightly different - more testing coming up!
Bottom line seems to be to hold on to the main sheet at all times.
Yes, I would say so.
That’s good advice even if you don’t fall off
